Abstract:A novel system structure of resonant fiber optical gyroscope using a parallel double hollow-core photonic crystal fiber ring resonator is proposed, which employs the double closed loop and reciprocal modulation–demodulation technique to solve the problem of the length mismatch between rings. This structure can suppress the residual amplitude modulation noise and laser frequency noise, essentially eliminating the influence of the Rayleigh backscattering noise and dramatically reduce the Kerr-effect-induced drift by three orders of magnitude. Thanks to its excellent noise suppression effect, the sensitivity of this novel system can approach the shot-noise-limited theoretical value of 8.94 × 10−7 rad/s assuming the length of the fiber ring resonator is 10 m.

Abstract:A closed-loop resonant fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG) configuration with three resonance frequency servo loops is proposed. By using one laser-servo loop and two symmetrical phase modulator (PM) servo loops, the effect of the reset due to the limited tracking range of the laser-servo loop is solved. Further long-term stability for 48 h and thermal stability at moderate rate measurements show that the output of the triple closed-loop RFOG is insensitive to environmental temperature variations. When the temperature increased from 17.5°C to 40.7°C in 1800 s and the maximum temperature rate was about 0.025°C/s during heating, the laser-servo loop was reset a total of 413 times. However, the output of the triple closed-loop RFOG is not affected by those frequent resets in the laser-servo loop because the two PM-servo loops are free of glitch pulses under this new scheme. Compared to the traditional double closed-loop RFOG, the thermal bias stability of the triple closed-loop RFOG is improved by a factor of 15 times from 29.8°/h to 1.88°/h.

Abstract:The resonant fiber optic gyro (RFOG) based on reciprocal modulation-demodulation technique is introduced and the influence of high modulation frequency on resonance and demodulation output is analyzed. The expression of backscattering output in resonant cavity is deduced and the experimental device is built to measure the backscattering coefficient. The demodulation model considering backscattering noise is established under reciprocal sinusoidal modulation, and the optimal modulation parameters are obtained by simulation. Finally, the RFOG system is set up. The results show that the detection sensitivity is improved by 19% with the optimal modulation parameters and the system bias stability improves from 0.067°/s to 0.023°/s.

Abstract:The resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG) with a broadband light source has recently emerged as an attractive new type optical gyroscope. However, the use of a broadband source limits the linear dynamic range and worsens the scale factor accuracy. In this article, the closed-loop scheme of the broadband source-driven RFOG is proposed and demonstrated. First, a novel method called the period-stacking method is presented. Then the closed-loop mechanism of the broadband source system is revealed. Although the rotation-induced frequency difference is wavelength-dependent in the broadband source scheme, we are pleased to find that the frequency shift generated by the serrodyne modulation is wavelength-independent and can be used to compensate for the rotation information. Finally, a closed-loop broadband source-driven RFOG with a 100 m-long and 7.6 cm-diameter fiber-optic ring resonator is experimentally demonstrated. The measured result shows that the long-term bias stability of the closed-loop broadband source-driven RFOG is 0.0063 °/h over a test time of up to 500 minutes. The temperature dependence drops from 2.8 (°/h)/°C in the open-loop system to 0.54 (°/h)/°C. It is improved by a factor of 5.2. The open-loop linear detection range of ±50 °/s is improved to ±350 °/s. It is improved by a factor of 7. The open-loop scale factor nonlinearity of 8% is decreased to 0.0281% (281 ppm), which is improved by a factor of 285.

Abstract:Resonator fiber optic gyroscope has the potential to achieve the inertial navigation system requirement with a short sensing coil. An all digitalized system is constructed including the signal modulation/demodulation and a proportional integral (PI) controller in a single field programmable gate array. Under this scheme, the serrodyne phase modulation technique is adopted, which is of benefit to overcome the backscattering induced noise and easy to implement in closed-loop operation. The phase modulation index is optimized to achieve high carrier suppression. The PI controller is adopted in the frequency servo loop to eliminate the residual error at the lock-in frequency. A bias stability of 5.2×10-4 rad/s in 500 seconds is demonstrated experimentally.

Abstract:A resonator fiber-optic gyro (R-FOG) is a high accuracy inertial rotation sensor based on the Sagnac effect. We construct an open-loop operation R-FOG based on the digital triangle wave phase modulation technique, which is free of pulse noise induced by phase reset and also advantageous of reducing the backscattering noise. Experimental results show that the dynamic range and the bias drift of the R-FOG are 3.37 and 0.012 rad/s over 5 s, respectively.

Abstract:A resonant fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG) using a reciprocal modulation and double demodulation technique based on a single laser source is proposed and demonstrated. The effect of the residual amplitude modulation of the phase modulator is well suppressed thanks to the reciprocal modulation and demodulation. On this basis, the backscattering noise is also eliminated by the double demodulation process. The long-term bias stability of the RFOG is successfully improved to 0.2 degrees/h for a test time of 45 hours. Abstract:In this Letter, a novel open-loop fiber-optic gyroscope configuration with a double sensitivity is proposed. By employing a polarization-maintaining Faraday rotator mirror and a polarization beamsplitter/wmbiner, light waves propagate twice along the same fiber coil in two orthonormal polarization directions. The reciprocity of the configuration has been verified in theory. The Allan variance analysis of the gyro prototype exhibits 0.03 degrees/h bias stability over 5.5 bin the laboratory environment. The residual amplitude modulation induced error of the phase modulator, and the effect of laser frequency noise are all suppressed thanks to the reciprocity of the proposed signal processing scheme. Compared with the past separate modulation-demodulation RFOG, the angular random walk is improved by a factor of 15 times from 0.08 degrees/root h to 0.0052 degrees/root h, and the bias stability is improved from 0.3 degrees/h to 0.06 degrees/h. Abstract:The broadband source-driven resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG), as a new type of gyroscope, demonstrates impressive advantages in both detection sensitivity and long-term bias stability. To further improve the system performance, this paper investigates the factors affecting the detection sensitivity and long-term bias stability of the broadband source-driven RFOG. Two mathematical models are developed to analyze the relationship between the fiber-optic ring resonator (FRR) parameters and the detection sensitivity, as well as the error induced by imperfect modulation signals. The analysis shows that the detection sensitivity can be improved by optimizing the coupling coefficients of the FRR. Meanwhile, the bias error at the output of the gyroscope caused by imperfect modulation can be effectively suppressed by improving the harmonic suppression ratio of the modulation signal and compensating the phase difference between the first and second harmonics. Finally, after using the optimized FRR and suppressing the error due to imperfect modulation, the experimental results show that the bias stability is in the range of 1°/h to 450μ°/h for different cavity lengths.

Abstract:This paper provides a scheme for realizing high-accuracy, low-cost resonant fiber optical gyroscopes (RFOGs) with single-mode (SM) fibers. The temperature-related polarization noise, which deteriorates the bias stability of the RFOG, has been suppressed thanks to a much longer birefringence beat length of SM fibers. It is also helpful to improve the theoretical sensitivity of the RFOG because of the very low loss of the SM fiber components. A transmissive 39-m-long SM fiber ring resonator (FRR) is fabricated. The measured finesse is 58.7, and its total loss is calculated to be less than 0.3 dB. Using this SM-FRR as the sensing element, an RFOG is then set up that achieves an angular random walk of 0.0039∘/√h and a bias stability of 0.05°/h. The experimental results show that the SM-FRR scheme would be a good candidate for producing high-accuracy and low-cost RFOGs.

Abstract:A resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG) based on a broadband source can avoid the fundamental drawback of coherence detection processing while possessing the greater sensitivity afforded by the finesse of the fiber-optic ring resonator. In this paper, the basic operation principle is presented and demonstrated in detail, and various noise sources, as well as the temperature effect encountered in this broadband source-driven RFOG, are studied and analyzed. Then a combined modulation technique is proposed to suppress the residual backscattering noise. To further reduce the effect of temperature transience, an asymmetric fiber ring resonator is designed. In the experiment, a bias stability of 0.01°/h is successfully demonstrated with a 100 m-long fiber ring resonator of 8 cm diameter in a laboratory environment without temperature control.

Abstract:A double closed-loop resonator fiber optic gyro (RFOG) with an improved digital serrodyne scheme is experimentally demonstrated. To overcome the effect of the imperfect serrodyne modulation, an improved frequency shifting module is designed and constructed on a single FPGA. The frequency resolution is improved to 0.01Hz, which is equivalent to a rotation rate of 0.04 degrees/h. A bias stability of 2 degrees/h is achieved in a double closed-loop RFOG with a 14.25-m long fiber ring resonator. This is the best result reported to date, to the best of our knowledge, for closed-loop RFOGs. Moreover, good linearity and large dynamic range are also experimentally demonstrated thanks to the closed-loop operation.

Abstract:The photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with better thermal stability and polarization-maintaining performance is applied to the resonant fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG). A hybrid fiber ring resonator is fabricated using the conventional polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) and PCF with close mode field diameters (MFDs) to reduce MFD-mismatch-induced splicing loss. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent birefringence coefficients of the PMF and the PCF are measured to differ almost four times in absolute value and be opposite in sign. The polarization stability of the hybrid PCF-PMF ring resonator is improved by a factor of 7 compared with the PMF ring resonator with the same length of PMF. The RFOG equipped with this hybrid PCF-PMF ring resonator achieves a bias stability of 1.67°/h.

Abstract:The resonant fiber optic gyro (RFOG) is a high accuracy inertial rotation sensor based on the Sagnac effect. The existence of various noises, including the nonreciprocal noises such as the polarization noise and the Kerr noise as well as the reciprocal circuit noise, limits the performance improvement of the RFOG. An improved scheme by inserting two in-line polarizers in the polarization maintaining fiber transmission-type resonator has been proposed to suppress the polarization-fluctuation induced drift. Furthermore, the adoption of the air-core photonic bandgap fibers (PBFs) offers a novel solution to reduce the optical Kerr effect. In addition, A digital signal processor is designed to reduce the reciprocal noises and detect the rotation information. A minimum actual rotation of 0.001°/s is achieved. The dynamic range is improved by a factor of 7 and the scale factor nonlinearity is decreased by a factor of 60.

Abstract:To widen the linear dynamic range and improve the linearity, a closed-loop resonant fiber optic gyro (RFOG) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. To overcome the effect of the imperfect serrodyne modulation, an improved frequency shifting module is designed and constructed on a LiNbO3 phase modulator. Its frequency resolution is improved to 0.01Hz which is equivalent to a rotation rate of 0.04 degrees/h for an RFOG with a 12-cm diameter fiber ring resonator. With the frequency shifter applied in the RFOG, a closed-loop detection is demonstrated, whose bias stability is around 2 degrees/h, close to that of the open-loop output. Moreover, good linearity and wide dynamic range are also experimentally demonstrated thanks to the closed-loop operation. The measured result shows that the open-loop linear detection range of +/- 215 degrees/s is improved to +/- 1076 degrees/s. It is improved by a factor of 5. The open-loop scale factor nonlinearity of 1.2% is decreased to 0.02% (200ppm), which is improved by a factor of 60. These are the best results reported to date, to the best of our knowledge, for closed-loop RFOGs. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America
