Abstract:A novel hybrid single-polarization (SP) fiber ring resonator is demonstrated by using a polarization-maintaining coupler formed by splicing a section of SP fiber into the resonator. The SP fiber selectively eliminates the unwanted resonance by introducing high loss for the unwanted eigenstates of polarization in the resonator. The calculated result shows that this hybrid SP resonator is a good candidate for a tactical-grade performance gyro with a high environmental temperature stability. The experiment shows that the desired resonance in the resonator can keep an excellent stability in a wide temperature range, thus the temperature-dependent polarization-fluctuation drift in the resonant fiber optic gyro is sufficiently suppressed. As a result, a random walk coefficient of 0.08°/√h and a typical bias stability below 0.3°/h for an integration time of 300 s have been carried out.

Abstract:A novel system structure of resonant fiber optical gyroscope using a parallel double hollow-core photonic crystal fiber ring resonator is proposed, which employs the double closed loop and reciprocal modulation–demodulation technique to solve the problem of the length mismatch between rings. This structure can suppress the residual amplitude modulation noise and laser frequency noise, essentially eliminating the influence of the Rayleigh backscattering noise and dramatically reduce the Kerr-effect-induced drift by three orders of magnitude. Thanks to its excellent noise suppression effect, the sensitivity of this novel system can approach the shot-noise-limited theoretical value of 8.94 × 10−7 rad/s assuming the length of the fiber ring resonator is 10 m.

Abstract:The photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with better thermal stability and polarization-maintaining performance is applied to the resonant fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG). A hybrid fiber ring resonator is fabricated using the conventional polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) and PCF with close mode field diameters (MFDs) to reduce MFD-mismatch-induced splicing loss. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent birefringence coefficients of the PMF and the PCF are measured to differ almost four times in absolute value and be opposite in sign. The polarization stability of the hybrid PCF-PMF ring resonator is improved by a factor of 7 compared with the PMF ring resonator with the same length of PMF. The RFOG equipped with this hybrid PCF-PMF ring resonator achieves a bias stability of 1.67°/h.
Effect of Fresnel Reflections in a Hybrid Air-Core Photonic-Bandgap Fiber Ring-Resonator Gyro.

Abstract:A novel hybrid polarization-maintaining (PM) air-core photonic bandgap fiber (PBF) ring resonator is firstly demonstrated by using a conventional solid-core PM fiber optical coupler formed by splicing a section of PM air-core PBF into the resonator. Due to Fresnel reflections exist at the two junctions between the air-core PBF and the solid-core fiber, the forward output signal of this hybrid ring resonator is the normal resonant curve with the superposition of the lightwaves that experienced even numbers of Fresnel reflections and the backward output signal is composed of lightwaves that experienced odd numbers of Fresnel reflections. Rigorous derivations of the forward and backward output signals are given out. The biggest resonant depth and finesse of the hybrid air-core PBF ring resonator predicted are 0.352 and 6.3 respectively by assuming a splice loss of 1.8 dB per junction. These predictions are finally confirmed by testing both the forward and backward output signals of the hybrid ring resonator. With the countermeasures against the influences of the odd numbers of Fresnel reflections, a bias stability of 0.007°/s is successfully demonstrated in a hybrid PM air-core PBF ring-resonator gyro.
Resonant Micro-Optic Gyro Using a Short and High-Finesse Fiber Ring Resonator

Abstract:A novel hybrid integrated scheme is proposed for a high-performance resonant micro-optic gyro (RMOG), which requires a low-loss micro-ring resonator for mass production. A new record for the RMOG is established experimentally with a short fiber ring resonator and an integrated signal detecting and processing circuit. The finesse of the short fiber ring resonator with a length of 60 cm and a diameter of 4.77 cm is as high as 202, and the theoretical sensitivity of the RMOG is better than 0.3°/h assuming the average optical intensity at the photodetector is 1 mW. The 60 cm long spliceless micro-ring resonator is experimentally proved to be sufficient for a tactical-grade RMOG. An angle random walk coefficient of 0.64°/√h and a typical bias stability below 9.6°/h for the integration time of 50 s are successfully demonstrated using an innovative open-loop approach for an operation time of 1600 s.

Abstract:A group of misaligned angles is proposed to describe the polarization characteristics of the fiber-pigtailed waveguide-type ring resonator (WRR). With these angles, a polarization analysis model is then set up using the Jones matrix method. The output polarization extinction ratios (PERs) of the WRR are obtained through measuring resonant curves under different input PERs. Though multiple numerical groups of solutions for misaligned angles can be obtained by substituting these input–output PERs into the polarization analysis model, we are delighted to find that different groups of misaligned angles do not affect the polarization analysis of the WRR. Thus, the output PER can be pre-evaluated by selecting any group of misaligned angles. The PER improvements of the output light from the WRR are compared both theoretically and experimentally when polarizers are added at the input and output ports of the cavity, as well as employing an intracavity polarizer. The influences of misaligned angles are also discussed.

Abstract:An optical fiber ring resonator (OFRR) is the key rotation-sensing element in the resonator fiber optic gyro (R-FOG). In comparing between different OFRR types, a simulation model that can apply to all cases is set up. Both the polarization crosstalk and polarization-dependent loss in the coupler are fully investigated for the first time to our knowledge. Three different splicing schemes, including a single 0 degrees, a single 90 degrees, and twin 90 degrees polarization axis rotated spices, are compared. Two general configurations of the OFRR are considered. One is a reflector OFRR, the other is a transmitter OFRR. This leads to six different OFRR types. The output stability of the R-FOG with six OFRR types is fully investigated theoretically and experimentally. Additional Kerr noise due to the polarization fluctuation is discovered. The OFRR with twin 90 degrees polarization axis rotated splices is of lower additional Kerr noise and hence has better temperature stability. As the coupler is polarization dependent, we notice that in a reflector OFRR, the straight-through component of the output lightwave, which can be isolated by a transmitter configuration, would produce large polarization fluctuation-induced noise. The experimental results show that the bias stability of the transmitter OFRR is 8 times improved over that of the reflector OFRR, which is in accord with the theoretical analysis. By the analysis and experiments above, it is reasonable to make a conclusion that an R-FOG based on a transmitter OFRR with twin 90 degrees polarization axis rotated splices is of better temperature stability and smaller additional Kerr effect noise. Abstract:Resonant micro-optic gyros (RMOGs) with waveguide-type ring resonators are promising candidates for applications demanding small, light, and robust gyros. However, the nonzero bias at the gyro output fluctuates in terms of both the bias and the bias stability, owing to the temperature variations of the waveguide-type resonator. In particular, the temperature sensitivity of the bias stability varies greatly depending on the temperature. This paper intends to reveal that these observed fluctuations arise from the temperature-dependent polarization fluctuation. We will investigate how such polarization fluctuation affects the bias of the gyro-output through the state of polarization of the input beam, the polarization characteristics of the resonator coupler, and the temperature variation of the resonator. Both our numerical simulation and experimental verification are carried out, which, for the first time to our best knowledge, demonstrate that the long-term stability of the RMOG can be significantly improved by optimizing the temperature of the waveguide resonator.
Short Fiber Resonant Optic Gyroscope Using the High-Frequency Pound-Drever-Hall Technique.

Abstract:Optical gyros are attractive angular rotation sensors based on the Sagnac effect. The phase modulation technique is adopted to detect the weak resonant frequency shift induced by the Sagnac effect, which determines the detection sensitivity of the gyros. The Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) modulation is a mature laser frequency stabilization technique that is widely recognized. A resonant optic gyro equipped with a short and high-finesse fiber ring resonator employing the high-frequency PDH modulation technique is proposed and demonstrated. The modulation index and frequency are optimized to maximize the slope of the demodulation curve. Compared with the low-frequency modulation, the high-frequency PDH modulation increases the slope of the demodulation curve by a factor of 1.23 and achieves an extra 15.8 dB of laser frequency noise suppression. The bias stability of the gyro output is improved from 9.6°/h to 8°/h, and the equivalent lock-in frequency accuracy increases 12 dB.

Abstract:To improve the thermal stability of a resonator fiber optic gyro (R-FOG), a transmission-type polarizing resonator by inserting two in-line polarizers in a polarization-maintaining fiber resonator with twin 90 degrees polarization-axis rotated splices is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The in-line polarizers attenuate the unwanted resonance by introducing high loss for the unwanted eigenstates of polarization in the resonator. The desired resonance in the resonator can keep excellent stability in a wide temperature range, thus the temperature-related polarization error in the R-FOG is dramatically suppressed. Both our numerical simulation and experimental verification are carried out, which for the first time to our best knowledge demonstrate that the open-loop output of the R-FOG is insensitive to environmental temperature variations. Abstract:This paper provides a scheme for realizing high-accuracy, low-cost resonant fiber optical gyroscopes (RFOGs) with single-mode (SM) fibers. The temperature-related polarization noise, which deteriorates the bias stability of the RFOG, has been suppressed thanks to a much longer birefringence beat length of SM fibers. It is also helpful to improve the theoretical sensitivity of the RFOG because of the very low loss of the SM fiber components. A transmissive 39-m-long SM fiber ring resonator (FRR) is fabricated. The measured finesse is 58.7, and its total loss is calculated to be less than 0.3 dB. Using this SM-FRR as the sensing element, an RFOG is then set up that achieves an angular random walk of 0.0039∘/√h and a bias stability of 0.05°/h. The experimental results show that the SM-FRR scheme would be a good candidate for producing high-accuracy and low-cost RFOGs.

Abstract:A method to decrease the polarization-fluctuation induced drift in a resonator fiber optic gyro ( R-FOG) is demonstrated by inserting two in-line polarizers in a polarization-maintaining fiber resonator with twin 90 polarization-axis rotated splices. Abstract:A single-polarization (SP) coupler based on air-core photonic bandgap fibers (PBFs) is proposed and numerically simulated. The physical mechanism is the decoupling phenomenon occurring at special separations between the cores of the dual-core PBFs called decoupling points. The coupling length of one polarization in the coupler tends to be infinite while the coupling length of other polarization remains in normal level. The coupling ratio for the primary polarization can vary by adjusting the length of the coupler since the other polarization is always decoupled out at any length of the coupler. When this novel SP coupler is incorporated into a PBFs based fiber ring resonator, its unique polarization property is theoretically simulated. In this full-PBFs configuration, the SP coupler functions as the power splitter and the polarizer simultaneously. By the finite element method, the feasibility of the SP coupler to filter the secondary eigenstate of polarization (ESOP) propagating in the resonator is proved. And the performance of the SP coupler to suppress the temperature-related polarization fluctuation in the resonant fiber optic gyro is promised to be more significant to the in-line polarizer integrating in the resonator. Furthermore, the mechanism of decoupling phenomenon in the SP coupler and the influence of polarization-axis angular misalignment are discussed. In conclusion, an optimized SP coupler can couple the primary ESOP properly, and a polarization extinct ratio larger than 30 dB can be achieved within the angular misalignment of 0.9 degree. The aforementioned unique properties make this novel SP coupler attractive for the resonant fiber optic gyro.

Abstract:A new record for high-finesse silica waveguide ring resonators (WRRs), to the best of our knowledge, is demonstrated experimentally. The achieved finesse and resonant depths of the silica WRR with a length of 7.9 cm and a diameter of 2.5 cm are 196.7% and 98%, respectively. In addition, the silica WRR chip is coupled with single-polarization fiber to improve the polarization extinction ratio (PER) and, thus, to reduce the polarization error. With the application of this high-finesse and high-PER WRR to the resonant microoptic gyroscope (RMOG), a bias stability of 0.004 degrees/s is observed over a 1 h timeframe. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first RMOG reported in the open literature that can sense the earth's rotation rate (15 degrees/h). (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Resonator fiber optic gyroscope has the potential to achieve the inertial navigation system requirement with a short sensing coil. An all digitalized system is constructed including the signal modulation/demodulation and a proportional integral (PI) controller in a single field programmable gate array. Under this scheme, the serrodyne phase modulation technique is adopted, which is of benefit to overcome the backscattering induced noise and easy to implement in closed-loop operation. The phase modulation index is optimized to achieve high carrier suppression. The PI controller is adopted in the frequency servo loop to eliminate the residual error at the lock-in frequency. A bias stability of 5.2×10-4 rad/s in 500 seconds is demonstrated experimentally.

Abstract:Polarization error and temperature noise are two main limits to the performance of resonant fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG). To overcome these limits, we demonstrated a hybrid resonator consisting of a polymer-based long-range surface plasmon polariton (LRSPP) waveguide coupler and a silica fiber. Single-polarization property of LRSPP waveguide and the offsetting of the opposite thermo-optical characteristics between the polymer-based LRSPP waveguide and the silica fiber can effectively inhibit both the polarization error and the temperature noise of RFOG. The measured resonance spectrum of the hybrid resonator shows the absence of polarization noise. The temperature dependence of wavelength shift (TDWS) of resonator dropped to about 2 pm/°C, or even to 0 pm/°C with optimal structure, which dramatically improves the temperature stability of gyroscope system. In addition, the hybrid resonator also shows tremendous application potential in rate-grade and tactical-grade gyroscopes.

Abstract:A resonator fiber optic gyro is a high accuracy inertial rotation sensor based on the Sagnac effect. Fiber ring resonator is the core-sensing element in the resonator fiber optic gyro. The dynamic response of the resonator has been studied, and the ringing phenomenon is observed when sweeping the laser frequency. The dynamic characteristics of the resonator, which are related with the frequency sweep rate, have a decisive effect on the dynamic performance of the gyro system. In order to further analyze and better design the gyro system, deep analysis of the dynamic resonance characteristics is in urgent need. This paper gives out the condition for the ringing phenomenon, and analyzes the parameters for the ringing and the dynamic resonance curve through simulation. It is concluded that increasing the sweep rate will lift the ringing and deteriorate the parameters of the resonance curve, and finally have negative effects on the performance of the gyro system.
