Abstract:A novel system structure of resonant fiber optical gyroscope using a parallel double hollow-core photonic crystal fiber ring resonator is proposed, which employs the double closed loop and reciprocal modulation–demodulation technique to solve the problem of the length mismatch between rings. This structure can suppress the residual amplitude modulation noise and laser frequency noise, essentially eliminating the influence of the Rayleigh backscattering noise and dramatically reduce the Kerr-effect-induced drift by three orders of magnitude. Thanks to its excellent noise suppression effect, the sensitivity of this novel system can approach the shot-noise-limited theoretical value of 8.94 × 10−7 rad/s assuming the length of the fiber ring resonator is 10 m.

Abstract:The photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with better thermal stability and polarization-maintaining performance is applied to the resonant fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG). A hybrid fiber ring resonator is fabricated using the conventional polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) and PCF with close mode field diameters (MFDs) to reduce MFD-mismatch-induced splicing loss. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent birefringence coefficients of the PMF and the PCF are measured to differ almost four times in absolute value and be opposite in sign. The polarization stability of the hybrid PCF-PMF ring resonator is improved by a factor of 7 compared with the PMF ring resonator with the same length of PMF. The RFOG equipped with this hybrid PCF-PMF ring resonator achieves a bias stability of 1.67°/h.

Abstract:This paper provides a scheme for realizing high-accuracy, low-cost resonant fiber optical gyroscopes (RFOGs) with single-mode (SM) fibers. The temperature-related polarization noise, which deteriorates the bias stability of the RFOG, has been suppressed thanks to a much longer birefringence beat length of SM fibers. It is also helpful to improve the theoretical sensitivity of the RFOG because of the very low loss of the SM fiber components. A transmissive 39-m-long SM fiber ring resonator (FRR) is fabricated. The measured finesse is 58.7, and its total loss is calculated to be less than 0.3 dB. Using this SM-FRR as the sensing element, an RFOG is then set up that achieves an angular random walk of 0.0039∘/√h and a bias stability of 0.05°/h. The experimental results show that the SM-FRR scheme would be a good candidate for producing high-accuracy and low-cost RFOGs.

Abstract:As the second generation of the fiber-optic gyro (FOG), a resonant FOG (RFOG) appears as a very viable candidate for a miniaturized optical gyro. However, due to the impediment of laser-induced parasitic noise and system complexity, the actual performance of the RFOG is well below expectations. This paper proposes a novel, to the best of our knowledge, RFOG which is driven by broadband white light rather than a narrow linewidth laser. The fiber-optic ring resonator (FRR) works as a filter, and the rotation under detection is read out from the round trip loss of the FRR. The parasitic noise is effectively avoided due to the low coherence light, and the measuring resolution can be thus improved. In the experiment, a bias instability of 0.012 ∘/h is demonstrated with a 100-m fiber coil and a very simple structure. The proposed method would be a big step forward for making the RFOG practical with high performance and low cost.

Abstract:A resonator fiber-optic gyro (R-FOG) is a high-accuracy inertial rotation sensor based on the Sagnac effect. A fiber ring resonator is the core sensing element in the R-FOG. When the frequency of the fiber ring resonator input laser is swept linearly with time, ringing of the output resonance curve is observed. The output field of the fiber ring resonator is derived from the superposition of the light transmitted through the directional coupler directly and the multiple light components circulated in the fiber ring resonator when the frequency of the laser is swept. The amplitude and phase of the output field are analyzed, and it is found that the difference in time for different light components in the fiber ring resonator to reach a point of destructive interference causes the ringing phenomenon. Finally the ringing phenomenon is observed in experiments, and the experimental results agree with the theoretical analysis well.

Abstract:A resonator fiber optic gyro (RFOG) based on a fiber-coupled semiconductor DFB-LD with an FPGA-based digital processor is set up. A bias stability of 23deg/h over one hour is successfully demonstrated. This is the best result in long time stability reported to date, to the best of our knowledge, for the RFOG based on a miniaturized laser source.

Abstract:The resonant fiber optic gyro (RFOG) is a high accuracy inertial rotation sensor based on the Sagnac effect. The existence of various noises, including the nonreciprocal noises such as the polarization noise and the Kerr noise as well as the reciprocal circuit noise, limits the performance improvement of the RFOG. An improved scheme by inserting two in-line polarizers in the polarization maintaining fiber transmission-type resonator has been proposed to suppress the polarization-fluctuation induced drift. Furthermore, the adoption of the air-core photonic bandgap fibers (PBFs) offers a novel solution to reduce the optical Kerr effect. In addition, A digital signal processor is designed to reduce the reciprocal noises and detect the rotation information. A minimum actual rotation of 0.001°/s is achieved. The dynamic range is improved by a factor of 7 and the scale factor nonlinearity is decreased by a factor of 60.

Abstract:A resonator fiber-optic gyro (R-FOG) is a high accuracy inertial rotation sensor based on the Sagnac effect. We construct an open-loop operation R-FOG based on the digital triangle wave phase modulation technique, which is free of pulse noise induced by phase reset and also advantageous of reducing the backscattering noise. Experimental results show that the dynamic range and the bias drift of the R-FOG are 3.37 and 0.012 rad/s over 5 s, respectively.

Abstract:The resonant fiber optic gyro (RFOG) based on reciprocal modulation-demodulation technique is introduced and the influence of high modulation frequency on resonance and demodulation output is analyzed. The expression of backscattering output in resonant cavity is deduced and the experimental device is built to measure the backscattering coefficient. The demodulation model considering backscattering noise is established under reciprocal sinusoidal modulation, and the optimal modulation parameters are obtained by simulation. Finally, the RFOG system is set up. The results show that the detection sensitivity is improved by 19% with the optimal modulation parameters and the system bias stability improves from 0.067°/s to 0.023°/s.

Abstract:A resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG) based on a broadband source can avoid the fundamental drawback of coherence detection processing while possessing the greater sensitivity afforded by the finesse of the fiber-optic ring resonator. In this paper, the basic operation principle is presented and demonstrated in detail, and various noise sources, as well as the temperature effect encountered in this broadband source-driven RFOG, are studied and analyzed. Then a combined modulation technique is proposed to suppress the residual backscattering noise. To further reduce the effect of temperature transience, an asymmetric fiber ring resonator is designed. In the experiment, a bias stability of 0.01°/h is successfully demonstrated with a 100 m-long fiber ring resonator of 8 cm diameter in a laboratory environment without temperature control.

Abstract:New developments are made in the resonant fiber optic gyro (RFOG), which is an optical sensor for the measurement of rotation rate. The digital signal processing system based on the phase modulation technique is capable of detecting the weak frequency difference induced by the Sagnac effect and suppressing the reciprocal noise in the circuit, which determines the detection sensitivity of the RFOG. A new technique based on the sinusoidal wave modulation and square wave demodulation is implemented, and the demodulation curve of the system is simulated and measured. Compared with the past technique using sinusoidal modulation and demodulation, it increases the slope of the demodulation curve by a factor of 1.56, improves the spectrum efficiency of the modulated signal, and reduces the occupancy of the field-programmable gate array resource. On the basis of this new phase modulation technique, the loop is successfully locked and achieves a short-term bias stability of 1.08°/h, which is improved by a factor of 1.47.

Abstract:The resonator fiber optic gyro (R-FOG) ,which utilizes a resonance frequency change due to the Sagnac effect,is a promising candidate for the next generation inertial rotation sensor. In this study,an open-loop R-FOG is set up using phase modulation spectroscopy. First,the demodulation curve is obtained using a lock-in amplifier.From the demodulation signal,a gyro dynamic range of ± 4. 2rad/s is obtained. Then,using different phase modulation frequencies,the open-loop gyro output signal is measured when the gyro is rotated clockwise or counterclockwise. The bias drift as a function of time is also measured. The fluctuation of the output over 5s is about 0. 02rad/s. The drift can be reduced by taking countermeasures against system noise.

Abstract:A resonator fiber optic gyro (R-FOG) is a high accuracy inertial rotation sensor based on the Sagnac effect. Fiber ring resonator (FRR) is the core-sensing element in the R-FOG. Till now, the dynamic response of the FRR is studied, and it is found that the frequency of the resonance dip is shifted away from the resonance frequency when sweeping the laser frequency, and thus must affect the performance of the R-FOG. Therefore, dynamic characteristics analysis of the R-FOG, which usually works in the dynamic state, is in urgent need. This paper presents the expression for the dynamic demodulation curve of the R-FOG based on the triangle wave phase modulation technique. Through analysis and simulation, it is concluded that the frequency zero-deviation will be induced when the R-FOG is in dynamic state, and the gyro error caused by the frequency zero-deviation will increase as the product of the operating range and the bandwidth of the R-FOG.

Abstract:A double closed-loop resonator fiber optic gyro (RFOG) with an improved digital serrodyne scheme is experimentally demonstrated. To overcome the effect of the imperfect serrodyne modulation, an improved frequency shifting module is designed and constructed on a single FPGA. The frequency resolution is improved to 0.01Hz, which is equivalent to a rotation rate of 0.04 degrees/h. A bias stability of 2 degrees/h is achieved in a double closed-loop RFOG with a 14.25-m long fiber ring resonator. This is the best result reported to date, to the best of our knowledge, for closed-loop RFOGs. Moreover, good linearity and large dynamic range are also experimentally demonstrated thanks to the closed-loop operation.

Abstract:A novel hybrid integrated scheme is proposed for a high-performance resonant micro-optic gyro (RMOG), which requires a low-loss micro-ring resonator for mass production. A new record for the RMOG is established experimentally with a short fiber ring resonator and an integrated signal detecting and processing circuit. The finesse of the short fiber ring resonator with a length of 60 cm and a diameter of 4.77 cm is as high as 202, and the theoretical sensitivity of the RMOG is better than 0.3°/h assuming the average optical intensity at the photodetector is 1 mW. The 60 cm long spliceless micro-ring resonator is experimentally proved to be sufficient for a tactical-grade RMOG. An angle random walk coefficient of 0.64°/√h and a typical bias stability below 9.6°/h for the integration time of 50 s are successfully demonstrated using an innovative open-loop approach for an operation time of 1600 s.

Abstract:To widen the linear dynamic range and improve the linearity, a closed-loop resonant fiber optic gyro (RFOG) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. To overcome the effect of the imperfect serrodyne modulation, an improved frequency shifting module is designed and constructed on a LiNbO3 phase modulator. Its frequency resolution is improved to 0.01Hz which is equivalent to a rotation rate of 0.04 degrees/h for an RFOG with a 12-cm diameter fiber ring resonator. With the frequency shifter applied in the RFOG, a closed-loop detection is demonstrated, whose bias stability is around 2 degrees/h, close to that of the open-loop output. Moreover, good linearity and wide dynamic range are also experimentally demonstrated thanks to the closed-loop operation. The measured result shows that the open-loop linear detection range of +/- 215 degrees/s is improved to +/- 1076 degrees/s. It is improved by a factor of 5. The open-loop scale factor nonlinearity of 1.2% is decreased to 0.02% (200ppm), which is improved by a factor of 60. These are the best results reported to date, to the best of our knowledge, for closed-loop RFOGs. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Resonator fiber optic gyro (RFOG) based on the Sagnac effect has the potential to achieve the inertial navigation system requirement with a short sensing coil. Semiconductor laser is one of the key elements for integration and miniaturization of the RFOG. In this paper, an RFOG employing a semiconductor laser is demonstrated. The model of the laser frequency noise induced error in the RFOG is described. To attenuate the laser frequency noise induced error, active frequency stabilization is applied. An online laser frequency noise observation is built, as a powerful optimum criterion for the loop parameters. Moreover, the laser frequency noise observation method is developed as a new measurement tool. With a fast digital proportional integrator based on a single field programmable gate array applied in the active stabilization loop, the laser frequency noise is reduced to 0.021 Hz (1σ). It is equivalent to a rotation rate of 0.07°/h, and close to the shot noise limit for the RFOG. As a result, a bias stability of open-loop gyro output is 9.5°/h (1σ) for the integration time 10 s in an hour observed in the RFOG. To the best of our knowledge, this result is the best long-term stability using the miniature semiconductor laser.

Abstract:An optical fiber ring resonator (OFRR) is the key rotation-sensing element in the resonator fiber optic gyro (R-FOG). In comparing between different OFRR types, a simulation model that can apply to all cases is set up. Both the polarization crosstalk and polarization-dependent loss in the coupler are fully investigated for the first time to our knowledge. Three different splicing schemes, including a single 0 degrees, a single 90 degrees, and twin 90 degrees polarization axis rotated spices, are compared. Two general configurations of the OFRR are considered. One is a reflector OFRR, the other is a transmitter OFRR. This leads to six different OFRR types. The output stability of the R-FOG with six OFRR types is fully investigated theoretically and experimentally. Additional Kerr noise due to the polarization fluctuation is discovered. The OFRR with twin 90 degrees polarization axis rotated splices is of lower additional Kerr noise and hence has better temperature stability. As the coupler is polarization dependent, we notice that in a reflector OFRR, the straight-through component of the output lightwave, which can be isolated by a transmitter configuration, would produce large polarization fluctuation-induced noise. The experimental results show that the bias stability of the transmitter OFRR is 8 times improved over that of the reflector OFRR, which is in accord with the theoretical analysis. By the analysis and experiments above, it is reasonable to make a conclusion that an R-FOG based on a transmitter OFRR with twin 90 degrees polarization axis rotated splices is of better temperature stability and smaller additional Kerr effect noise.
