Abstract:The SrCo0.9Sb0.1O3−δ (SCS) composite oxide with cubic perovskite structure was synthesized by a modified Pechini method and examined as a novel cathode for protonic ceramic membrane fuel cells (PCMFCs). At 700°C and under open-circuit condition, symmetrical SCS cathode on BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3−δ (BZCY7) electrolyte showed low polarization resistances (Rp) of 0.22Ωcm2 in air. A laboratory-sized tri-layer cell of NiO–BZCY7/BZCY7/SCS was operated from 500 to 700°C with humidified hydrogen (∼3% H2O) as fuel and the static air as oxidant. A high open-circuit potential of 1.004V, a maximum power density of 259mWcm−2, and a low polarization resistance of the electrodes of 0.14Ωcm2 was achieved at 700°C.

Abstract:A stable, easily sintered perovskite oxide BaCe0.5Zr0.3Y0.16Zn0.04O3−δ (BCZYZn) as an electrolyte for protonic ceramic membrane fuel cells (PCMFCs) with Ba0.5Sr0.5Zn0.2Fe0.8O3−δ (BSZF) perovskite cathode was investigated. The BCZYZn perovskite electrolyte synthesized by a modified Pechini method exhibited higher sinterability and reached 97.4% relative density at 1200°C for 5h in air, which is about 200°C lower than that without Zn dopant. By fabricating thin membrane BCZYZn electrolyte (about 30μm in thickness) on NiO–BCZYZn anode support, PCMFCs were assembled and tested by selecting stable BSZF perovskite cathode. An open-circuit potential of 1.00V, a maximum power density of 236mWcm−2, and a low polarization resistance of the electrodes of 0.17Ωcm2 were achieved at 700°C. This investigation indicated that proton conducting electrolyte BCZYZn with BSZF perovskite cathode is a promising material system for the next generation solid oxide fuel cells.

Abstract:This paper reviews recent advances on development of reduced temperature ceramic fuel cells in our group. Various materials, including DCO (doped ceria), LSGM (Sr- and Mg- doped LaGaO3) and DCO-chlorides composites, were investigated as the electrolyte materials for reduced temperature ceramic fuel cells. Screen-printing technique was successfully employed to fabricate dense DCO electrolyte as well as porous electrodes. A modified gel tape-casting technique was also developed to prepare anode supported DCO films. Gel-casting method was successfully utilized to prepare multi-component perovskite metal oxides, LSGM. The DCO-chlorides composite electrolyte showed much higher O2- and/or H+ conductivity and higher transference number than pure DCO and exhibited satisfactory fuel cell performance at rather low temperatures. Some new cathode materials were developed as alternatives to traditional fuel cell cathode materials and showed promising performance. All efforts in our group focused on searching new material systems for both electrolytes and electrodes, as well as the advanced fabrication techniques to realize superior performance at reduced temperature.

Abstract:A kind of novel composite electrolyte, consisting of zinc doped ceria and carbonates, was developed. The phase and morphology of the composite material were characterized. Ceramic fuel cells based on this composite electrolyte were constructed with two techniques. The hydrogen-air fuel cell fabricated with anode-supported technique showed relative low open circuit voltages (OCVs) and high output performance, but the electrolyte-supported one exhibited relative high OCVs and low output performance. During the fuel cell operation, water was observed at both anode and cathode sides, indicating hybrid ions conduction lies in the composite electrolyte under fuel cell environment.

Abstract:Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) can be made to last longer and perform better if their operating temperatures are lowered. Traditional SOFCs, however, have poor performance at low temperatures due to significant Ohmic and polarization losses. Regarding ionic conductivity, doped ceria excels as a low-temperature SOFC catalyst. In this study, Bi-doped CeO2 (Bi0.1Ce0.9O2) has been used to function as an electrolyte in low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). The Bi–CeO2 is prepared as a functional electrolyte layer placed between two symmetrical porous electrodes NCAL (Ni0.8Co0.15Al0.05LiO2–δ) by a wet chemical coprecipitation process. Using Na2Co3 as a precipitating agent enhances the performance of the produced Bi–CeO2 particles by enhancing their surface characteristics. The synthesized Bi–CeO2 electrolyte demonstrates an impressive fuel cell performance with a high ionic conductivity of 0.192 S/cm at a low temperature of 520 °C. Additionally, Bi-doped CeO2 demonstrates remarkable proton performance, with 660 mW/cm2 and an activation energy of only 0.456 eV at 520 °C. The mechanism of high conduction was proposed in great detail. The findings demonstrate that high ionic and proton conductivity in fuel cells is possible at low temperatures. In addition, the suggested work hints at the possibility of designing well-functioning electrolytes for advancing low-temperature fuel-cell technology.

Abstract:Development of triple-conducting cathode can extend the electrochemically active region to the entire cathode to more effectively promoting oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, a cobalt-free perovskite Sr1.75K0.25Fe1.5Mo0.5O6-delta (SKFM) was developed as a single-phase triple-conducting cathode material for protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). Introduction of K into Sr-site leads to a 21.54 % increase in the hydration capacity compared to the undoped Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5O6-delta (SFM). The bulk diffusion coefficient and surface exchange coefficient of SKFM are 3.8 and 5.2 times higher than those of SFM at 550 degrees C, respectively. XAS and EPR results demonstrate that the average valence state of Fe and the concentration of surface oxygen vacancies in SKFM are higher than those in SFM. The polarization resistances (R-p) value of SKFM cathode in wet air is 0.06 Omega cm(2) at 700 degrees C, while it is 0.11 Omega cm(2) for SFM cathode, which is reduced by 45.5 %, indicating significantly improved ORR activity. The R-p is dominated by the adsorption and diffusion process of oxygen associated with low-frequency part in wet air. The single cell with a configuration of Ni-BZCY4/21-mu m-thick BZCY4/SKFM delivers a power output of 1000.8 mW cm(-2) in wet H-2 at 700 degrees C and steady operation at 600 degrees C for a total of 100 h.

Abstract:Protonic ceramic fuel cells have become extremely interesting due to their high power output at the intermediate temperature range (400–700 °C). Significant progress has been made to develop electrolyte materials, doped barium cerates-zirconate, which gets the leading role due to its high chemical stability and high ionic conductivity. Here, we present a new composition BaCe0.5Zr0.3Y0.1Yb0.05Zn0.05O3-δ (BCZYYbZn05), where addition of 5 mol% Zn with Ce, Zr, Y, and Yb at the B-site of the perovskite material shows high stability with high conductivity. The material was synthesized by solid-state reaction route at 1400 °C which showed 98% relative density. Rietveld analysis of neutron powder diffraction data reveal an orthorhombic structure with Pbnm space group. Thermogravimetric analysis shows about 1.06% weight loss from 200 to 1000 °C which is mainly related to the formation of the oxygen vacancies. In wet hydrogen atmosphere, this material shows higher conductivity and lower activation energy than dry hydrogen atmosphere indicates the conduction type as protonic conduction. The anode-supported single test cell based on this electrolyte material demonstrates peak power densities 649 mW cm−2 at 700 °C using conventional BSCF cathode, representing an important step toward commercially viable SOFC technology.

Abstract:Efficient cathodes with high catalytic activity and stability are crucial for the development of protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). Single-phase cathode is difficult to meet multiple requirements, such as high electrochemical performance, oxygen reducing activity, stability, and CO2-resistance. In this regard, we report self-assembled dual-phase perovskite cathodes Ba(Co0.7Fe0.3) x (Ce0.8Y0.2)1‑x O3‑δ (BCFCY, x = 0.6, 0.7, 0.8) prepared by a one-pot method for PCFCs. The cathode displays a triple O2–/e–/H+ conducting behavior, which consists of a cubic phase (C-BCFCY, Co-rich) and a rhombohedral phase (R–BCFCY, Ce-rich) in this perovskite. The C-BCFCY has high O2–/e– conductivity and low basicity, while the latter R–BCFCY exhibited excellent hydration performance, which synergistically results in cathode with high electrochemical activity and CO2-resistance. Owing to its appropriate dual phase composition, the Ba(Co0.7Fe0.3)0.7(Ce0.8Y0.2)0.3O3‑δ (BCFCY73) electrode demonstrates low polarization resistance (0.065 Ω cm2) at 700 °C in 5 vol % water steam. The peak power density of anode-supported single cells BZCYYb | BCFCY73 | BZCYYb is 545.3 mW cm–2 at 700 °C. This result proves that regulating the content of two phases (proton conductors and ionic conductors, respectively) of perovskite oxide by the one-pot method is an effective strategy to design PCFC cathode materials with high activity, and this method can also be applied in other energy transfer materials fields.

Abstract:Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) are more suitable for operation at low temperatures due to their smaller activation energy ( E a ). Unfortunately, the utilization of PCFC technology at reduced temperatures is limited by the lack of durable and high-activity air electrodes. A lot number of cobalt-based oxides have been developed as air electrodes for PCFCs, due to their high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. However, cobalt-based oxides usually have more significant thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) and poor thermomechanical compatibility with electrolytes. These characteristics can lead to cell delamination and degradation. Herein, we rationally design a novel cobalt-containing composite cathode material with the nominal composition of Sr 4 Fe 4 Co 2 O 13+ δ (SFC). SFC is composed of tetragonal perovskite phase (Sr 8 Fe 8 O 23+ δ , I4/mmm , 81 wt.%) and spinel phase (Co 3 O 4 , Fd 3̄ m , 19 wt.%). The SFC composite cathode displays an ultra-high oxygen ionic conductivity (0.053 S·cm −1 at 550 °C), superior CO 2 tolerance, and suitable TEC value (17.01 × 10 −6 K −1 ). SFC has both the O 2− /e − conduction function, and the triple conducting (H + /O 2− /e − ) capability was achieved by introducing the protonic conduction phase (BaZr 0.2 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 O 3− δ , BZCY) to form SFC+BZCY (70 wt.%:30 wt.%). The SFC+BZCY composite electrode exhibits superior ORR activity at a reduced temperature with extremely low area-specific resistance (ASR, 0.677 Ω·cm 2 at 550 °C), profound peak power density (PPD, 535 mW·cm −2 and 1.065 V at 550 °C), extraordinarily long-term durability (> 500 h for symmetrical cell and 350 h for single cell). Moreover, the composite has an ultra-low TEC value (15.96 × 10 −6 K −1 ). This study proves that SFC+BZCY with triple conducting capacity is an excellent cathode for low-temperature PCFCs.

Abstract:Over protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) cathode, both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydration reaction happen. To maximize the performance, the cathode requires sufficient proton conductivity for facilitating water formation and large number of active sites and high intrinsic activity for catalyzing ORR. Herein, we demonstrate hydration reaction and ORR over PCFC cathode can be optimally balanced through controlling the air flow rate, which adjusts the equilibrium water and oxygen content in the surrounding atmosphere of the cathode. Then the suitable proton uptake can enhance the proton conductivity of the cathode without negatively affecting ORR. The different characteristics of various cathode materials suggest their different optimal operation conditions. Specifically, the optimal performance of SrTi0.1Fe0.9O3-delta, Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta and BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zr0.1Y0.1O3-delta cathodes in PCFCs at 600 degrees C is reached at different water content in the air atmosphere of 472, 592 and 735 mW cm-2, respectively, showing increased peak power density (PPD) of 13%, 10% and 6% of the corresponding cells as compared to that operating near static air atmosphere. Our study reveals the important environmental de-mands of PCFC cathode during the operation and provides useful guidance for the further performance optimization.

Thin proton-conducting BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3-δ (BZCY) electrolyte and NiO–BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3-δ (NiO–BZCY) anode functional layer were prepared over porous anode substrates composed of NiO–BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3-δ by a one-step dry-pressing/co-firing process. A laboratory-sized quad-layer cell of NiO–BZCY/NiO–BZCY(∼50μm)/BZCY(∼20μm)/BSCF–BZCY(∼50μm) was operated from 550 to 700°C with humidified hydrogen (∼3% H2O) as fuel and the static air as oxidant. A high open-circuit potential of 1.009V, a maximum power density of 418mWcm−2, and a low polarization resistance of the electrodes of 0.10Ωcm2 was achieved at 700°C. Abstract:A new concept electrode is reported with quadruple‐conduction (H3O+/H+/O2−/e−) for PCFC, which composed of a β‐NaFeO2 phase and a NaySrzTiuFe1−uO3−δ (NSTF) perovskite phase formed through self‐assembling. For protonic ceramic fuel cells, it is key to develop material with high intrinsic activity for oxygen activation and bulk proton conductivity enabling water formation at entire electrode surface. However, a higher water content which benefitting for the increasing proton conductivity will not only dilute the oxygen in the gas, but also suppress the O2 adsorption on the electrode surface. Herein, a new electrode design concept is proposed, that may overcome this dilemma. By introducing a second phase with high‐hydrating capability into a conventional cobalt‐free perovskite to form a unique nanocomposite electrode, high proton conductivity/concentration can be reached at low water content in atmosphere. In addition, the hydronation creates additional fast proton transport channel along the two‐phase interface. Abstract:Improving the ionic conductivity and slow oxygen reduction electro-catalytic activity of reactions occurring at low operating temperature would do wonders for the widespread use of low-operating temperature ceramic fuel cells (LT-CFCs; 450-550 °C). In this work, we present a novel semiconductor heterostructure composite made of a spinel-like structure of Co0.6Mn0.4Fe0.4Al1.6O4 (CMFA) and ZnO, which functions as an effective electrolyte membrane for solid oxide fuel cells. For enhanced fuel cell performance at sub-optimal temperatures, the CMFA-ZnO heterostructure composite was developed. We have shown that a button-sized SOFC fueled by H2 and ambient air can provide 835 mW/cm2 of power and 2216 mA/cm2 of current at 550 °C, possibly functioning down to 450 °C. In addition, the oxygen vacancy formation energy and activation energy of the CMFA-ZnO heterostructure composite is lower than those of the individual CMFA and ZnO, facilitating ion transit. The improved ionic conduction of the CMFA-ZnO heterostructure composite was investigated using several transmission and spectroscopic measures, including X-ray diffraction, photoelectron, and UV-visible spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These findings suggest that the heterostructure approach is practical for LT-SOFCs.
Self-Assembled Triple-Conducting Nanocomposite As a Superior Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cell Cathode

Abstract:Here, we report an oxygen ion-proton-electron-conducting nanocomposite, BaCo0.7(Ce0.8Y0.2)(0.3)O3-delta(BCCY), derived from a self-assembly process, as a high-performance protonic ceramic fuel cell (PCFC) or mixed O2-/H+ dual-ion conducting fuel cell (dual-ion FC) cathode. Self-assembly during high-temperature calcinations results in the formation of a nanocomposite consisting of a mixed H+/e(-) conducting BaCexYyCozO3-delta (P-BCCY) phase and mixed O2-/e(-) conducting BaCoxCeyYzO3-delta(M-BCCY) and BaCoO3-delta(BC) phases. The interplay between these phases promotes the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics of this composite cathode and improves its thermo-mechanical compatibility by tempering the mismatch in thermal expansion coefficient (TEC). When tested as the cathode in anode-supported dualion FCs and PCFCs, peak power densities (PPDs) of 985 and 464 mW cm(-2), respectively, are achieved at 650 degrees C while maintaining a robust operational stability of 812 h at 550 degrees C. This material is ideally suited for high-performance cathodes for PCFCs and dual-ion FCs, greatly accelerating the commercialization of this technology.
