Abstract:V-based body-centered cubic (BCC) hydrogen storage alloys exhibit a remarkable hydrogen storage capacity, but their impractical high activation temperature and poor cyclic stability present significant obstacles. In this work, we aimed to address these issues by doping Y into the Ti28Cr26V35Fe6Mo5 alloy to achieve easy activation and high cyclic stability. The doping of Y had a minimal impact on the microstructure of the alloy, yet it notably lowered the activation temperature. This improvement can be attributed to the emergence of the YH2 phase during the initial hydrogenation process. As the YH2 phase expands, it creates pathways for hydrogen to infiltrate the alloy matrix, resulting in a substantial enhancement of activation performance. Furthermore, when doped with 1 wt% Y, the cyclic stability showed significant improvement, increasing from ∼76% to ∼92% after 103 cycles. This Y doping not only mitigated the increase in Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) but also reduced alloy pulverization, while simultaneously lowering the oxidation levels of Ti, Cr, and V. These effects collectively hindered the growth of alloy defects and oxidation, ultimately contributing to improved cyclic stability. These findings elucidate the pivotal role of Y in TiCrVFeMo alloys and provide valuable insights into enhancing hydrogen storage properties.
