Abstract:A novel 1 × N optical power splitter has been proposed, to realize the desired specific optical power splitting, in which the asymmetric Y-branch waveguides based on total internal reflection have been introduced. The simulated results show that the arbitrary expected splitting can be achieved in the device. The device has been fabricated by using polymer materials, and it experimentally exhibits good uniformity at optical power output ports, which is consistent with the simulation prediction. The novel 1 × N optical power splitter has wide potential application in the integrated optical system.

Abstract:We designed and demonstrated TE-mode arbitrary power splitters based on adiabatic mode evolution. The power splitters are designed with a footprint of smaller than 12 × 2.9 μm2, fabricated on a 400-nm silicon-on-insulator platform, requiring only a single etch step. The optimization process and the conditions for arbitrary-power splitting are performed using three-dimensional-FDTD simulations. We prove this concept through the fabrication of asymmetrical adiabatic evolution-based power splitters with splitting ratios of 50:50, 60:40, and 70:30. The fabricated devices are shown to agree closely with simulation results. Broadband operation with low insertion loss of 0.11–0.6 dB is demonstrated across the 3.66–3.89 μm wavelength range (230 nm). This component has applications in a multitude of areas such as spectroscopic optical sensing and optical phased arrays photonic integrated circuits etc.
Compact Rat-Race Coupler with Double-Sided Parallel-Strip Line (DSPSL) for Dual-Band Arbitrary Power Divisions

Abstract:Dual-band rat-race couplers are implemented with double-sided parallel-strip line to provide arbitrary power divisions. Both the uniform-impedance and stepped-impedance cases are explored, and design equations are derived for the two cases. With our method, the rat-race coupler can be quickly developed to satisfy the design specifications. By using phase inverter, arms with arbitrary electrical lengths and characteristic impedances, the areas of components are reduced by 79.5% and 88.6% in comparison with the conventional rat-race coupler. The good performances of the proposed couplers have been demonstrated by their measured and simulated results.

Abstract:We proposed a compact design of cascade Y-branch splitter devices. The new device consists of a 1 x N branching region and a fan-out region. The length requirement of this new design is analyzed, the results show that the device length can be sharply cut, when N is larger than 8. As an example of this new structure, we designed an 1 x 16 branching splitter by K+/Na+ ion-exchange in BK7 glass, the smallest S-bend radius is 30mm, and the total bends length is about 20mm, it is 69% length of ordinary splitter.

Abstract:Generalized equations are presented for the design of a rat-race coupler with a phase inverter and an arbitrary power division, where its four arms are built by symmetric reciprocal lossless two-port networks. According to these equations, uniform- and stepped-impedance rat-race couplers are analyzed and synthesized with dual-band arbitrary power divisions. The relationships between the geometries and the design specifications of proposed dual-band rat-race couplers are completely determined. Under such circumstances, the most compact configuration of the stepped-impedance rat-race coupler is achieved when the maximum allowable impedance ratio is applied for all its arms. Several prototypes are realized with double-sided parallel-strip lines (DSPSLs) and DSPSL phase inverters. As the stepped-impedance arms are not limited to simulate 90° sections and the phase inverters are implemented into our proposed dual-band couplers, the component circumferences are reduced significantly by 65%-70%, in comparison with their conventional 540° counterpart. Their good performances are demonstrated by the simulated and measured results.

Abstract:A novel compact Gysel power divider is proposed and investigated in this paper. The proposed power divider consists of two transmission lines, a pair of coupled lines, and only one grounded resistor for unequal power-dividing ratio. Comparing to the conventional Gysel power divider, the new power divider saves its space by eliminating the 180 ° electrical length transmission line and reduces complicity by using one grounded resistor. The flexibility in choosing the value of the resistor provides favorable freedom in circuit realization. In addition, analytic design formulas of the proposed power divider, for both equal and unequal ratio cases, are given. For the equal radio case, two grounded resistors are required. Two prototype power dividers are simulated, fabricated, and measured. Both prototypes operate at 2 GHz, but with different power divisions, one for power division ratio k = 1 and the other for k = 2. There are good correlation between the measured results and those of the theoretically designed, justifying the circuit configuration and the design theory.

Abstract:Integrated optical power splitters are one of the fundamental building blocks in photonic integrated circuits. Conventional multimode interferometer-based power splitters are widely used as they have reasonable footprints and are easy to fabricate. However, it is challenging to realize arbitrary split ratios, especially for multi-outputs. In this Letter, an ultra-compact power splitter with a QR code-like nanostructure is designed by a nonlinear fast search method. The highly functional structure is composed of a number of freely designed square pixels with the size of 120×120 nm which could be either dielectric or air. The light waves are scattered by a number of etched squares with optimized locations, and the scattered waves superimpose at the outputs with the desired power ratio. We demonstrate 1×2 splitters with 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 split ratios, and a 1×3 splitter with the ratio of 1:2:1. The footprint for all the devices is only 3.6×3.6 μm. Well-controlled split ratios are measured for all the cases. The measured transmission efficiencies of all the splitters are close to 80% over 30 nm wavelength range.

Abstract:The arbitrary ratio power splitter is widely used in photonic integrated circuits (PICs), for signal monitoring, power equalization, signal feedback, and so on. Here we designed a fabrication-tolerant, compact, broadband, and low-loss arbitrary ratio power splitter. The proposed arbitrary ratio power splitter was realized with an adiabatically tapered silicon rib waveguide with 70 nm shallow etches and an Si3N4 waveguide. The fabrication analysis confirmed that both of them are robust to fabrication errors. 3D finite-difference time-domain simulations show a very low excess loss (less than 0.02 dB for Si3N4 waveguide and 0.05 dB for Si rib waveguide), and a broadband operating wavelength range (100 nm). Good fabrication tolerance and standard critical dimensions make the arbitrary ratio power splitter compatible with the standard fabrication process of commercial silicon photonic foundries.

Abstract:Free choice of splitting ratio is one of the main properties of a power splitter required in integrated photonics, but conventional multimode interference (MMI) power splitters can only obtain a few discrete ratios. This Letter presents both numerical and experimental results of an arbitrary-ratio 1 x 2 MMI power splitter, which is constructed by simply breaking the symmetry of the multimode region. In the new device, the power splitting ratio can be adjusted continuously from 100:0 to 50:50, while the dimension of the multimode section stays in the range of 1.5 x (1.8-2.8) mu m. The experimental data also indicate that the proposed arbitrary-ratio splitter keeps the original advantages of MMI devices, such as low excess loss, weak wavelength dependence, and large fabrication tolerance. Abstract:A novel wavelength-selective 1 x N power splitter, which consists of a microring and N + 1 couplers, is presented. One coupler is for coupling the light signal from the input port into the microring and the other couplers are for coupling the signal light from the microring to the output ports. The channels with the resonant wavelength of the microring are dropped and split into output ports. The critical coupling condition to achieve a high extinction ratio is also given. By appropriately choosing the coupling coefficients for the input/output couplers, it is flexible to have a uniform or nonuniform power splitting as desired.

Abstract:We demonstrate integrated 1 x 4 power splitters at 2-mu m spectral range with arbitrary power-splitting ratios. The devices are based on digital meta-structures that are designed by algorithm. Four devices with split ratios of 1:1:1:1, 2:2:1:1, 2:2:2:1, and 4:3:2:1 are inversely designed to conceptually prove the capability of arbitrary split ratios. Up to four design objectives including both efficiency and power ratios between the four outputs of each device have been jointly optimized. The total transmission efficiencies of all the algorithm-optimized splitters are above 80%, which is predicted by simulations. The power ratios are well consistent with the design targets as well. Then, the devices are fabricated on silicon-on-insulator platform with the device footprint of only 3.6 mu m x 3.6 mu m. The fabricated splitters are characterized at wavelength range from 1945 to 1975 nm. The total transmission efficiencies of all the splitters are measured to be higher than 70%, and the power ratios agree with the simulation results.

Abstract:This paper propose a new design method and optimization strategy for a compact cascaded 1×N optical power splitter.The splitter consists of N-1 1×2 splitter unit-cells connected by bent waveguides,cell-output connection is achieved by two joint waveguide bends.An evolutionary algorithm is used for structure optimization to minimize the device length to facilitate integration.BPM simulation results show that the device footprint and insertion loss are both reduced compared with a traditional optical power splitter design.

Abstract:A design of a 1 × 2 multimode 3 dB optical power splitter using tapered couplers is proposed and investigated in this paper. As an example, a 1 × 2 splitter processing five-lowest order transverse-electric-polarized modes is designed and optimized by utilizing finite difference time domain method and particle swarm optimization algorithm. To verify the feasibility of this novel design, the optimized device is fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The coupling lengths of tapered couplers are respectively 6.5 µm, 6.0 µm, 3.5 µm, 5.0 µm, 5.0 µm, 7.5 µm, 6.0 µm, 5.0 µm, and 8.0 µm. Measurement results reveal that, for the fabricated splitter, the power uniformity varies from 0.041 to 0.88 dB, the crosstalk ranges from -23.96 to -14.12 dB, and the insertion loss changes from 0.089 to 1.50 dB within a bandwidth from 1520 to 1600 nm.
