Abstract:Compared with mixer-settlers applied widely in the hydrometallurgical industry of rare earths (RE), centrifugal contactors have several advantages such as low hold-up volume, excellent phase separation, high mass transfer efficiency, compact and short pieces of equipment, etc., and have been successfully used in some industrial fields. Yttrium (Y) is an important element and in great demand in many industries. For a variety of uses in many specialized areas, the high purity Y is often required. However, the separation and purification of Y by solvent extraction from RE mixture is widely known to be difficult due to their similar chemical properties. This paper studied both the separation factors of RE ions in the 32% HA (naphthenic acid) −20% iso-octylalcohol–48% kerosene–RECl system and the distribution ratios of RE ions in the 32% HEHEHP (2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester) −68% kerosene–RECl system. Based on these studies, an extraction flowsheet for producing high purity Y with HA and HEHEHP as extractants has been developed. Both the bench scale test and the pilot-plant test of the flowsheet have been performed with ϕ20 mm and ϕ120 mm centrifugal contactors respectively. It is shown that Y2O3 with 99.99% purity was obtained, and the total recovery of Y was about 95%.

Abstract:As a relatively new extractant, di-(2,3-dimethylbutyl)-phosphinic acid(HYY-2) is more efficient to separate heavy rare earths Tm/Yb/Lu than Cyanex 272 and P507. In this paper, HYY-2 was synthesized in our lab, and the extraction equilibrium, thermodynamics and stripping acidity for La, Gd and Y, which stood for light rare earth elements(REE), middle REE and heavy REE respectively, from nitrate media with this extractant were investigated. Meanwhile, extraction ability, capacity and stripping acidity of HYY-2 were investigated and compared with those of Cyanex 272 and P507. The separation performance for rare earth element couples Gd/Eu and Er/Y were also studied. Compared to Cyanex 272, it possessed higher extraction capacity; while compared with P507, it has lower stripping acidity. The maximum β Gd/Eu 1.46 occurred at pH equilibrium =2.78 and the maximum β Er/Y was 1.47 when pH equilibrium = 2.01.

Abstract:The Yttrium (Y)-rich sample was collected from the microgranite dikes in the Ras Abdah area, Northern Eastern Desert of Egypt. The mineralogical studies on the Y-rich microgranite dike (RMGD) revealed the presence of REEs-bearing minerals with 8480 mg/kg Y content. In this study, a novel method was used to selectively recover the Y(III) content (8480 mg/kg) from other rare earth elements (REEs) in the digested concentrate solution. Solvent extraction using Cyanex 921(Cy-921) was applied for the first time to achieve this secondary recovery process. Different factors affecting Y extraction were studied. Using the slope analysis technique, we may infer that Cy-921 has extracted Y as a complex with a 3:1 (Cy-921: Y) molar ratio. Extraction efficiencies of around 99% were achieved for Y(III), employing a concentration of 1 mole. L-1 of Cy-921/ Kerosene. The organic to aqueous ratio was 1:1, the aqueous pH was 0.3, and the contact period was 15 minutes. Thermodynamic calculations showed that Cy-921/Y extraction is characterized by an exothermic nature. The stripping process of Y (99.8%) was achieved using 2.5 mole. L-1 H2SO4. A highly refined Y precipitate was obtained from the stripped solution by an oxalic acid precipitation method and then subjected to calcination, resulting in the production of Y2O3 with a purity of 99.8%.

Abstract:Ion-adsorbed rare-earth minerals often contain high proportions of yttrium; it is a technical challenge to separate yttrium from rare-earth elements (REEs). For the purpose of separating yttrium effectively, a novel ionic liquid [trioctylmethylammonium][(2,6-dimethylheptyl propionate] ([N1888][POPA]) was prepared to separate Y from heavy rare-earth elements (HREEs). The thermodynamic data of the separation process was studied systematically. The extraction mechanism of [N1888][POPA] was demonstrated to be ion association, which conduces to avoid the saponification wastewater. [N1888][POPA] revealed better selectivities for Y and other HREEs (Ho–Lu); also, deionized water could be utilized for stripping the HREE-loaded organic phase. On this basis, the fractional extraction process based on [N1888][POPA] was carried out. This extraction system showed satisfying performance as shown by the fractional extraction, i.e., Y was purified from 85.2 to 99.1 wt % accompanying 85.37% yield by means of nine extraction stages and six scrubbing stages. The developed extraction process has shown application potential in the field of clean production of ion-adsorbed rare-earth minerals.

Abstract:The extraction behavior of lanthanides and yttrium usinsg CYANEX 925 (mixture of branched chain alkylated phosphine oxides) in n-heptane from nitrate medium has been studied. The effects of aqueous phase ionic strength, CYANEX 925 concentration in the organic phase, and temperature on Sm3+, Nd3+ and Y3+ extraction have been investigated. The extractability of the lanthanides and yttrium increases with increasing nitrate concentration, as well as with increasing CYANEX 925 concentration. An extraction mechanism is proposed based on slope analysis. Furthermore, the infra-red spectra of CYANEX 925 saturated with lanthanides are employed to provide evidence of the composition of the complex. The relationship between the logarithm of the distribution ratio and lanthanide atomic number is also discussed which indicates that yttrium can be separated from fight lanthanides. In addition separation of the light and heavy lanthanide groups is also possible using CYANEX 925. From the temperature dependence data, the thermodynamic parameters values (Delta H, Delta S and Delta G) are calculated. (c) 2007 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:The current separation technique of ion-adsorption high yttrium (Y) rare earth ore (high-yttrium ore) using 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) and naphthenic acid (NA) has been confronted with low separation efficiency and high acid consumption. This is a consequence of the low selectivity and the difficulty of complete stripping of heavy rare earths (HREEs). Therefore, an innovative separation technique of high-yttrium ore was proposed. The leachate of high-yttrium ore was firstly divided into Erbium (Er) / Thulium (Tm) groups with P507-isooctanol followed by separating Y (III) from the high Y-enrichment of Er (III) group with sec-octylphenoxy acetic acid (CA12)-tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP). The basic thermodynamics experiments and cascade extraction simulations were conducted to verify the feasibility of this technology. The results show that P507-15vol% isooctanol is superior to P507 in both stripping ability and separation selectivity of HREEs. The first cascade extraction for Er (III) / Tm (III) grouping with P507-15vol% isooctanol was simulated successfully, reducing acid consumption but obtaining high purity products. In theory, the second cascade extraction simulation designed for separating Y (III) with CA12-TBP could not only improve the separation ability between Y (III) and light rare earths (LREEs) but also shorten the extraction stages and reduce the production costs. All these results revealed that this two-step separation process probably provided a promising application prospect for separating high-yttrium ore.

Abstract:An extraction method for producing high purity Sc(III) from ion-adsorptive rare earth deposit (IARED) is presented. Naphthenic acid diluted with iso-octanol and sulfated kerosene is selected as the extractant, chloride acid as the scrubbing and stripping solution. By two extraction processes in naphthenic acid system, scandium is concentrated from 0.02–0.04% to 15–20% (wt.), and further purified to 99.99–99.999% grade. The stoichiometry of the extraction of Sc(III) with naphthenic acid was also determined.

Abstract:A new extractant, {[2-(2-diphenylphosphoryl)-4-ethylphenoxy]ethyl}diphenylphosphine oxide, has been synthesized, and its solutions in 1,2-dichloroethane and a ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, have been used to extract HNO3, uranium(VI), thorium(IV), and trivalent rare earths from nitric acid solutions. The stoichiometry of the extracted complexes has been determined, and the effects of the extractant structure and HNO3 concentration in the aqueous phase on the extraction efficiency have been studied. The extraction efficiency has been found to significantly increase when ionic liquid is present in the organic phase.

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REEs) such as yttrium, europium, and terbium are extracted from minerals like bastnäsite and monazite through complex, energy-intensive processes. Recycling these elements is crucial for reducing environmental impact, conserving resources, and ensuring a stable supply. This manuscript explores the selective separation of Y and Eu from a solution using various solvent extraction agents (Cyanex 272, 572, 923, D2EHPA, and Aliquat 336). Initially, the phosphor powder with a particle size of less than 45 μm was dissolved in a 4 M HNO3 solution, followed by Ca precipitation using Na2SO4. Solvent extraction was then carried out with D2EHPA, which enabled a higher separation efficiency of Y and Eu. The pH, concentration, time, and O: A effects on both the loading and stripping stages were investigated. For the stripping step, the effect of the stripping agent (HCl, HNO 3 ) on the selective recovery of Y (> 99% purity) or Y–Eu oxides was examined. At the pH value of 0.05, 20% ligand concentration, and 1:1 O: A ratio for 10 min, 88.50% of Y was selectively transferred to the organic phase (D2EHPA) in one step, leaving a considerable amount of Eu remained in the raffinate. After solvent extraction, the effects of temperature, time, stoichiometric ratio, and pH were investigated for precipitation. For precipitation, using oxalic acid at twice the stoichiometric ratio at 50 °C, 99.45% of Y and 98.82% of Eu were precipitated in 120 min as REE oxalates. The precipitated oxalates were calcined, at 500–1100 °C for 2–8 h. With a calcination process conducted at 800 °C for 2 h, all the REE oxalates were converted to REE oxide form. It was observed that without solvent extraction, a Y–Eu oxide containing 90.64% Y and 6.92% Eu was produced, whereas, after D2EHPA extraction, Y oxide with 99.17% purity was obtained.

Abstract:Ion-adsorbed rare earth minerals are rich in medium and heavy rare earth (RE), which are important strategic resources. In this article, a novel approach for the extraction of RE from ion adsorbed minerals was developed. Through a comprehensive assessment of their extraction and separation performance, the hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDES) with a composition of trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO): dodecanol (LA): 2-thiophenoyltrifluoroacetone (HTTA) = 1:1:1 was determined as the optimal configuration. Under optimized conditions, only RE were extracted by the HDES, while Al, Ca, Mg were not extracted at all. The HDES based extraction obviated the need for diluent such as kerosene, eliminating the generation of impurity removal residues. The RE in the stripping solution could be successfully enriched by saponified lauric acid, achieving an impressive precipitation rate of 99.7%. The RE precipitate underwent further enrichment, resulting in a RE concentration of 176 g/L (REO = 210 g/L). Unlike industrial precipitants such as oxalic acid and ammonium bicarbonate, lauric acid can be effectively recycled, thereby avoiding a large amount of wastewater and carbon dioxide emissions. The obtained RE solution product exhibits high yield and purity, this study provides an eco-friendly and high-yield approach for extracting RE.

Abstract:The present study focuses on investigating the conditions for acid leaching of Th and REEs and sequential oxalate precipitation to remove impurities from leach liquor. The effects of preheat treatment, leaching time, liquid/solid ratio, and acid concentration on Th, Sm, Pr, Nd, Ce, La, and U leaching yields were investigated. The best results were obtained at 400 °C preheated sample using 1 mol/L H 2 SO 4 , liquid/solid ratio of 1 mL/g, 60 min leaching time, and 30 °C leaching temperature. The leaching yields of Th, Sm, Pr, Nd, Ce, La, and U were found to be 41.7, 65.0, 68.2, 66.9, 84.3, 82.6, and 55.0% respectively. Th and REE liquors were treated with 0.5–1.5 mol/L H 2 C 2 O 4 solutions in the precipitation step. Purity was enhanced through three sequential precipitation cycles, resulting in a purity grade of 98.59%.

Abstract:The extraction of light rare earths (Pr and Nd) from chloride medium was investigated using a mixture of di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (P204) and bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (Cyanex272) in sulfonated kerosene. The P204+Cyanex272 system exerted a synergistic effect on the separation of light rare earths, and the separation coefficient was higher than when P204 and Cyanex272 were used as extractants alone. The separation coefficient of Pr and Nd in the extraction system reached 1.75 when the pH of the aqueous phase material solution was approximately 2.5, and 1.5 mol/L hydrochloric acid as a stripping agent effectively eluted the rare earth ions in the loaded organic phase. Combining the slope method, infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we explored the mechanism of the extracted Nd and Pr into the organic phase complex, and finally entered the organic phase with Re(HA2)2B. The P-O-H bond and P=O bond in the extractant P204 and Cyanex272 formed a coordination bond with Re3+. Therefore, this extraction method also provides a reference for a more environmentally friendly and efficient procedure for separation and purification of light rare earth elements Pr and Nd.

Abstract:Ultra-high purity Yb2O3 is the critical material of many high-tech materials such as laser glass and fiber, in which impurities seriously affect the laser color quality, intensity and power. In order to reduce the influence of impurities on the properties of laser materials, the purification process of Yb2O3 was studied by comparing two kinds of resins (RT-1 and RS-1) using improved ion-exchange chromatography (IEC) method. In this study, through the synergistic improvement of resin structure and eluting system, the environmental pollution caused by ammonia water in the traditional IEC method was reduced, and the requirements of high temperature and pressure were cut. The ion exchange behavior and impurity removal mechanism in the resin column during the loading and eluting process were compared and analyzed. The experimental results show that RS-1 resin is all superior to RT-1 resin in elements selectivity, ion exchange capacity and impurities removal rate. After separation and purification by IEC with RS-1 resin, the total removal rate of rare earth impurities was 77.59% and that of non-rare earth impurities was 95.86% when Yb recovery was more than 70%, both higher than that of RT-1 resin (73.26% and 83.18%). This indicates that the improved IEC method is very effective in separating and removing different metal impurities from Yb2O3. The pilot test results of IEC method separating and purifying Yb2O3 with RS-1 resin show that the purity of Yb2O3 can be increased from 99.9929% to 99.9997% by IEC method. It has exhibited huge potential of preparing ultra-high purity Yb2O3, especially the deep removal of non-rare earth impurities.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Purification of yttrium by vacuum distillation was carried out and the purification process of yttrium was studied. More than 60 metallic impurity elements of input as well as purified Y were analysed using glow discharge mass spectrometry (GDMS) and C, N, O, and S were analysed by interstitial gas analysis (IGA). The analysis confirmed the reduction of total impurity content from <10,202.96 ppmw to <27.45 ppmw. High volatile impurities such as Mg, Ca, Ti, Mn, Zn, Dy, Ho Er and Tm were reduced effectively after the first step carried out at ∼1600 °C for 4–6 h. The crucible impurity W and Ta was drastically reduced in the distilled yttrium at a distillation temperature of ∼1800 °C under a dynamic vacuum of ∼1.5 × 10−4 Pa; meanwhile, C, N, O, and S were decreased to low content, in which O was 75 ppmw. The evaporation rate and mean free path were calculated under the experimental conditions in this paper.
Boosting the extraction of rare earth elements from chloride medium by novel carboxylic acid based ionic liquids

Abstract:Two novel carboxylic acid based ionic liquids (ILs), benzyltributylammonium myristic acetate ([N444Bn][MA]) and benzyltributylammonium dodecanedioic acetate ([N444Bn]2[DDA]), have been rationally designed and successfully synthesized for the extraction of yttrium (denoted as Y(III)) from a chloride aqueous solution and for the separation of mixed rare earth elements (REEs). Comparison studies of the extraction performances of [N444Bn][MA] and [N444Bn]2[DDA] were carefully investigated under different conditions (e.g., equilibrium time, solution acidity, salting-out agent concentration, and REEs concentration). The results indicated that the extraction efficiency of Y(III) reached 87.18% after 2 min using [N444Bn]2[DDA], whereas it required 10 min to reach an extraction efficiency of 47.37% using [N444Bn][MA], mainly due to the larger electronegativity of the incorporated dicarboxylates in the anions of [N444Bn]2[DDA], which enhanced its coordination with Y(III) compared to [N444Bn][MA]. However, [N444Bn][MA] illustrated better selective separation behavior than [N444Bn]2[DDA] in mixed REEs solutions (including La, Nd, Eu, Ho, Yb and Y), and the selective factors of Yb and La were 16.21 and 3.30, respectively. Furthermore, the ion association mechanism, evolved from the slope analysis and FT-IR results, contributed to avoiding the saponification procedures and resultant saponification wastewater during the extraction process. In addition, the back-extraction experiments indicated that ~97% Y(III) can be stripped from [N444Bn]2[DDA] and [N444Bn][MA] using 1.0 M and 0.4 M HCl, respectively, demonstrating that these ILs can be further used in large-scale applications for the separation and recovery of REEs.

Abstract:The extractive process for the production of rare earth chlorides from leaching liquor of some rare erth ores has been studied with organic phosphoric acid as extractive reagent. The feasibility of extractive technology has been confirmed in unitized experiment with a d 20 cm centrifugal extractor. When leaching liquor was adjusted to pH=5 with ammonia-sodium sulfide, the heavy metal ions and 90% aluminum ion were removed, and purified liquor was obtained. Rare earth recovery rate was more 90% through two stages countercurrent extraction of purified liquor and three stages countercurrent stripping of organic phase loading rare earth with 6 mol/L HCl. Rare earth concentration of stripped liquor was above REO 150 g/L, and solid RECl(3) that equivalently contained 45% to 46% REO was obtained through vaporization.
Crown Ether–ionic Liquid-Based Extraction Chromatographic Resin for Separation of 90 Y from 90 Sr

Abstract:90Y was separated from 90Sr using an extraction chromatographic resin consisting of 4, 4′(5′)-bis-t-butylcyclohexano-18-crown-6 (DtBuCH18C6), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) amide (C2mimNTf2), and a polymer (Amberlite XAD-7). Ionic liquid was introduced into the column to improve the separation efficiency. The column showed an excellent performance for the separation of Y from Sr. After the separation, the ratio of 90Sr/90Y was <2.0 × 10−5; the column was recycled for >18 times. This study provides preliminary results on columns to produce 90Y with a high purity in radiopharmaceuticals.

Abstract:The separation of heavy rare earths (HREs) at a higher efficiency using solvent extraction has been one of the most difficult tasks in hydrometallurgy. Herein, a novel extractant N, N′-di(2-ethylhexyl)aminomethyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (HEDEAP, abbreviated as HA) was synthesized and used for the extraction and separation of HREs from chloride medium. The p K a and purity of HA was determined to be 7.82 and 93.8% by potentiometric titration. The separation factors ( SF ) between adjacent HREs, i.e. SF Er/Ho , SF Tm/Er , SF Yb/Tm , and SF Lu/Yb were determined to be 3.05, 3.30, 3.53 and 1.52, respectively, which are higher than those of the analogues of HA and some typical extractants such as P204 and P507 under the same conditions. The extraction of REs by HA follows cation exchange mechanism and the extracted complex of trivalent REs was determined to be REH 2 ClA 4 by slope analysis. Thermodynamic parameters (Δ H o , Δ G o and Δ S o ) of Lu 3+ were calculated as 4.02 kJ mol −1 , −7.21 kJ mol −1 and 37.7 J mol −1 K −1 at 298 K, respectively, indicating that the extraction of Lu 3+ is an entropy-driven endothermic process. The loading capacities of 30% ( V / V ) HA toward Y, Yb and Lu were about 10.3 g/L (Y 2 O 3 ), 21.6 g/L (Yb 2 O 3 ) and 25.4 g/L (Lu 2 O 3 ), respectively. Among inorganic acids such as H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 and HCl, H 2 SO 4 was the most effective stripping acid, and 98% Yb 3+ can be stripped from the loaded organic phase by just one stage of stripping with 0.25 mol/L H 2 SO 4 . Therefore, HA would be a potential extractant for the separation of HREs.
