Abstract:The separation of actinides from lanthanides in spent nuclear fuel reprocessing is a vital step of nuclear fuel cycle process. As one class of mature industrial extractants, the organophosphorus extractants have been widely used for the extraction and separation of actinides and lanthanides in spent fuel reprocessing due to their strong extraction ability and low-cost acquisition. In this concept, the application scope of tributyl phosphate (TBP), bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (HDEHP), octyl(phenyl)-N,N-diisobutylcarbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (CMPO), trialkyl phosphine oxide (TRPO), and purified Cyanex 301 (bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) dithiophosphinic acid, HA301) are introduced, and their extraction mechanism, as well as structure-function relationships for separation of actinides over lanthanides are also discussed. Furthermore, the design criteria, extraction properties and mechanism of several typical newly developed organophosphorus extractants (CMPO-modified calixarene/pillarene, phenanthroline-derived organophosphorus extractants, and phosphate-modified carborane) based on pre-organized skeletons are briefly reviewed. Finally, the important role played by those organophosphorus extractants is emphasized and potential applications in separation of actinides over lanthanides in future advanced nuclear fuel cycle are identified.

Abstract:Designing and selecting extractants with high selectivity between uranium and thorium, and developing the relevant separation process is one of the key points to realize efficient utilization of nuclear resources in the thorium-uranium nuclear fuel cycle. In this work, we used four phenanthroline-derived phosphine-oxide extractants with different substituents and studied their extraction ability and separation effect on U(VI)/Th(IV) under different conditions. The Et-2-BPPhen and Ph-2-BPPhen extractants show weak and strong extraction abilities for U(VI) and Th(IV), respectively. The Et-Ph-BPPhen(R,R) and Et-Ph-BPPhen(R,S) extractants could co-extract U(VI) and Th(IV) under high acidity (D-U(VI) > 300, D-Th(IV) > 40, SFU(VI)/ Th(IV) < 7, 4 M HNO3), and show high selectivity towards U(VI) over Th(IV) at low acidity (SFU(VI)/ Th(IV) > 200, 0.1 M HNO3). Most Th(IV) can be stripped by adjusting the acidity of the aqueous phase, while U(VI) still remains in the organic phase (S-Th(IV) > 95 %, S-U(VI) < 5 %), so as to achieve the step-by-step process for co-extraction and selective separation. Then, the slope analysis and NMR titration (H-1 and P-31) determined BPPhen ligands could form ML-type complex with U(VI), and can simultaneously form M/L = 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with Th(IV). The stability constants of the metal-ligand complexes were fitted by UV-Vis spectroscopic titration to estimate coordination abilities of four ligands. Finally, the single-crystals of complexes with the structures of [UO2(L)(NO3)(2)], [Th(L)(NO3)(4)] and [Th(L)(H2O)(2)]4(ClO4), (L = Et-2-BPPhen/Et-Ph-BPPhen(R,R)/Et-Ph-BPPhen(R,S)/Ph-2-BPPhen) were produced, and their coordination and packing mode were analyzed. This work contributes to revealing the structure-activity relationship of phenanthroline phosphine-oxide extractants and providing a reference for designing new extractants with high U(VI)/Th(IV) separation efficiency.

Abstract:As a relatively new extractant, di-(2,3-dimethylbutyl)-phosphinic acid(HYY-2) is more efficient to separate heavy rare earths Tm/Yb/Lu than Cyanex 272 and P507. In this paper, HYY-2 was synthesized in our lab, and the extraction equilibrium, thermodynamics and stripping acidity for La, Gd and Y, which stood for light rare earth elements(REE), middle REE and heavy REE respectively, from nitrate media with this extractant were investigated. Meanwhile, extraction ability, capacity and stripping acidity of HYY-2 were investigated and compared with those of Cyanex 272 and P507. The separation performance for rare earth element couples Gd/Eu and Er/Y were also studied. Compared to Cyanex 272, it possessed higher extraction capacity; while compared with P507, it has lower stripping acidity. The maximum β Gd/Eu 1.46 occurred at pH equilibrium =2.78 and the maximum β Er/Y was 1.47 when pH equilibrium = 2.01.

Abstract:The extraction and separation of heavy rare earths is always one of the most challenging unit operations in hydrometallurgy. Research and development of novel efficient extractant is one way to solve this problem. Organophosphinic acid is a good potential extractant. A new method was established for the synthesis of nonsymmetric dialkylphosphinic acid (NSDAPA) (R′R″POOH, R′≠R″), optimized the synthesizing conditions of the key intermediate mono-alkylphosphinic acid and successfully synthesized three novel extractants (n-octyl)(2,4,4′-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, (n-octyl)(cyclohexyl)phosphinic acid and (2,3-dimethylbutyl) (2,4,4′-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid. The extraction ability of the novel extractants was investigated. The structure–property relationship and the separation performance for heavy rare earth couples Er/Y, Y/Ho, Yb/Tm and Lu/Yb were evaluated.

Abstract:A kinetic study concerning chemical complexation-based solvent extraction of rare earth metals with 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester dissolved as an extractant in n-heptane was carried out using a microporous hydrophobic hollow fiber membrane extractor. The effects of concentration of chemical species in aqueous and organic feed solutions on the apparent permeabilities of metal species for extraction and stripping, respectively, were investigated to clarify the permeation mechanism. From the experimental results it was predicted that the permeation rate is controlled by diffusion of the chemical species in aqueous and organic phases and by interfacial chemical reaction. The experimental data were analyzed by the diffusion model accompanied with an interfacial reaction, taking into account the velocity distributions of the aqueous and organic phases through the inner and outer sides of the hollow fiber.

Abstract:Nonsymmetric (2,3-dimethylbutyl)(2,4,4′-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid (INET-3) may be a superior extractant for extraction and separation of heavy rare earths (REs), as its extraction ability falls between that of P507 and Cyanex 272. Its purity and pKa were determined using potentiometric titration methods. The extraction mechanism and extraction equilibrium constants of INET-3 for heavy REs from chloride media were studied. The effects of the anion types (Cl−, NO3− and SO42−) and concentrations (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0mol/L) on RE(III) extraction were investigated. The extraction capacity and separation factors of INET-3 for heavy REs were determined. The stripping behaviours of heavy RE complexes with INET-3 by HCl, HNO3 and H2SO4 were examined. The results showed that the pKa of INET-3 was 5.45. The extraction capacity of INET-3 was approximately twice that of Cyanex 272 and only one-third that of P507. Loaded heavy RE(III) extracted by INET-3 was completely stripped out by HCl, HNO3 and H2SO4 solutions when the pH was at or below 1.2. Among the three inorganic acids, H2SO4 was the most effective stripping agent. INET-3 can separate heavy RE(III) efficiently, and the separation factors of adjacent heavy RE(III) βEr/Ho, βTm/Er, βYb/Tm and βLu/Yb were 3.25, 2.73, 2.96 and 1.53, respectively, when extracted from a Ho/Er/Tm/Yb/Lu quinary system.

Abstract:The current separation technique of ion-adsorption high yttrium (Y) rare earth ore (high-yttrium ore) using 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) and naphthenic acid (NA) has been confronted with low separation efficiency and high acid consumption. This is a consequence of the low selectivity and the difficulty of complete stripping of heavy rare earths (HREEs). Therefore, an innovative separation technique of high-yttrium ore was proposed. The leachate of high-yttrium ore was firstly divided into Erbium (Er) / Thulium (Tm) groups with P507-isooctanol followed by separating Y (III) from the high Y-enrichment of Er (III) group with sec-octylphenoxy acetic acid (CA12)-tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP). The basic thermodynamics experiments and cascade extraction simulations were conducted to verify the feasibility of this technology. The results show that P507-15vol% isooctanol is superior to P507 in both stripping ability and separation selectivity of HREEs. The first cascade extraction for Er (III) / Tm (III) grouping with P507-15vol% isooctanol was simulated successfully, reducing acid consumption but obtaining high purity products. In theory, the second cascade extraction simulation designed for separating Y (III) with CA12-TBP could not only improve the separation ability between Y (III) and light rare earths (LREEs) but also shorten the extraction stages and reduce the production costs. All these results revealed that this two-step separation process probably provided a promising application prospect for separating high-yttrium ore.

Abstract:Efficient new extractant design relies on systematic structure–property studies. However, systematic structure–property research on extractants of organic phosphinic acids is far from sufficient. To make up for this deficiency, twelve organic phosphinic acid extractants (including nine dialkylphosphinic acids, two dicycloalkylphosphinic acids and one diarylphosphinic acid) were synthesized with free-radical-addition-reaction method and Grignard-reaction method. Reaction rules, advantages and disadvantages of these two methods were discussed respectively. The extraction ability and separation performance of the synthesized organic phosphinic acids for Tm, Yb and Lu from HNO3 solutions were evaluated and compared. For dialkylphosphinic acids the nearer the branched chain moved to P atom, the more reduction generated on the extraction ability. Dialkylphosphinic acids without branched chain in α-C or β-C (e.g. HYY-3, HYY-5, HYY-7 and HYY-9) exhibited strong extraction ability as P507. On the contrary, dialkylphosphinic acids with branched chain in α-C (e.g. HYY-4, HYY-8) and dicyclohexylphosphinic acids exhibited poor extraction ability as Cyanex 272. New compound Di-(2,3-dimethylbutyl)-phosphinic acid (HYY-2) exhibited good extraction ability and separation performance and its separation factors of Lu/Yb, Yb/Tm and Lu/Tm were 1.42, 3.10 and 4.40 respectively, apparently superior to Cyanex 272 (βLu/Yb=1.31, βYb/Tm=3.25, βLu/Tm=4.26).

Abstract:Abstract In order to apply a microchannel extractor to solvent extraction, the extraction of three rare earth metals (yttrium, europium and lanthanum) with 2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (PC-88A) dissolved in toluene was performed on the microchannel extractor, which has two inlets and two outlets. A parallel two-phase flow without mutual mixing was observed in the microchannel, and each phase successfully flowed out from each outlet. The extraction and back-extraction rates were measured, and the metal transfer between the two phases accompanied with an interfacial chemical reaction was proved to proceed satisfactorily in a short phase contacting time. The productivity of metals was confirmed to increase by using an extractor having a long channel and a large specific interfacial area.

Abstract:Ion-adsorbed rare earth minerals are rich in medium and heavy rare earth (RE), which are important strategic resources. In this article, a novel approach for the extraction of RE from ion adsorbed minerals was developed. Through a comprehensive assessment of their extraction and separation performance, the hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDES) with a composition of trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO): dodecanol (LA): 2-thiophenoyltrifluoroacetone (HTTA) = 1:1:1 was determined as the optimal configuration. Under optimized conditions, only RE were extracted by the HDES, while Al, Ca, Mg were not extracted at all. The HDES based extraction obviated the need for diluent such as kerosene, eliminating the generation of impurity removal residues. The RE in the stripping solution could be successfully enriched by saponified lauric acid, achieving an impressive precipitation rate of 99.7%. The RE precipitate underwent further enrichment, resulting in a RE concentration of 176 g/L (REO = 210 g/L). Unlike industrial precipitants such as oxalic acid and ammonium bicarbonate, lauric acid can be effectively recycled, thereby avoiding a large amount of wastewater and carbon dioxide emissions. The obtained RE solution product exhibits high yield and purity, this study provides an eco-friendly and high-yield approach for extracting RE.

Abstract:Novel non-fluorinated ILs with hydrophobic nature was designed and successfully prepared.Endowing cation with carboxylic acid group facilitates the extraction capability of REEs.Different extraction mechanisms were determined with chloride and nitrate medium.Selective separation of Sc from lanthanides are realized with undiluted extraction system.Different affinity between La/Ni, Sm/Co benefits recycling of REEs in future applications.Developing the novel ionic liquids as the potential substitutes for conventional organic solvents in extraction of the rare-earth metals is highly desirable but remains facing challenges. In this study, the well-designed carboxylic acid functionalized phosphonium based ionic liquids, (4-carboxyl)butyl-trioctyl-phosphonium chloride/nitrate, are synthesized and characterized. The as-prepared samples are tested as the undiluted hydrophobic acidic extractant for rare-earth metal ions, affording the maximal loading of 3 mol/mol towards Nd(III) in aqueous solution and the remarkable stripping performance. The results also reveal their excellent extractability and selectivity for Sc(III) in the mixtures of six rare-earth ions, as well as the outstanding separation properties between rare-earth and first row transition-metal ions (i.e., La/Ni, Sm/Co). Moreover, the extraction mechanism indicates that the extracted rare-earth complex via a proton exchange in the ionic liquid phase is structurally similar to the complexes obtained with neutral extractants. This work presents a prototype for the fabrication of the hydrophobic cation-functionalized ionic liquids for highly efficient rare-earth extraction and provides the future application in recycling of rare-earth metals from the spent magnets.Novel carboxylic acid functionalized ILs were fabricated for highly efficient undiluted extractants for REEs. Different Extraction mechanisms were illustrated respectively in chloride or nitrate media, occurring via the typical proton exchange mechanism. Fast Extraction and Enrichment of Rare Earth Elements from Waste Water Via Microfluidic-Based Hollow Droplet

Abstract:The conventional solvent extraction set-up for low-concentration rare earth elements (REEs) at high phase ratios has shortcomings including large factories, long mixing times, high energy consumption, extractant loss and easy emulsification. In this work, a solvent extraction system for Nd(III) using 2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) was investigated to enhance extraction in a microfluidic device to solve the above problems. The effects of residence time and phase ratio on the extraction efficiency of a liquid-liquid system were studied. The results showed that extraction efficiency increased as the residence time increased significantly, and a longer channel was required to reach equilibrium for higher phase ratios than for others owing to the decreased oil flow rate and increased mass transfer distance. We also investigated the effects of outlet length, phase ratio, and gas flow rate on the extraction efficiency of a gas-liquid-liquid system. The results indicated that only 0.3 m of the outlet channel was required to reach equilibrium for the entire process, and the overall volume mass transfer coefficient k(L)a was 5-50 times larger than in systems without a gas phase. The enrichment factor could reach 200-450 with an initial concentration of 30-90 ppm, and the extraction efficiency was higher than 90% even at a high phase ratio of 200. A theoretical model was built to predict the intensification of extraction by the gas-filled hollow droplet. Finally, europium and erbium were chosen as the typical medium and heavy rare earth systems to prove the applicability of this method. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The separation of the rare earth elements is essential for numerous scientific applications but remains a significant challenge due to the nearly identical chemical properties of the adjacent lanthanide elements. Eichrom's LN series of extraction chromatographic resins feature organophosphorus extractants and are widely used to achieve adjacent lanthanide separations. While extensive characterization of these resins has been completed for nitric acid matrices, the use of hydrochloric acid is preferred for a variety of applications. The extraction of the rare earth elements, La–Lu and Y, has been characterized on LN and LN2 resins in hydrochloric acid via batch uptake and column chromatographic studies.

Abstract:The separation of heavy rare earths (HREs) at a higher efficiency using solvent extraction has been one of the most difficult tasks in hydrometallurgy. Herein, a novel extractant N, N′-di(2-ethylhexyl)aminomethyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (HEDEAP, abbreviated as HA) was synthesized and used for the extraction and separation of HREs from chloride medium. The p K a and purity of HA was determined to be 7.82 and 93.8% by potentiometric titration. The separation factors ( SF ) between adjacent HREs, i.e. SF Er/Ho , SF Tm/Er , SF Yb/Tm , and SF Lu/Yb were determined to be 3.05, 3.30, 3.53 and 1.52, respectively, which are higher than those of the analogues of HA and some typical extractants such as P204 and P507 under the same conditions. The extraction of REs by HA follows cation exchange mechanism and the extracted complex of trivalent REs was determined to be REH 2 ClA 4 by slope analysis. Thermodynamic parameters (Δ H o , Δ G o and Δ S o ) of Lu 3+ were calculated as 4.02 kJ mol −1 , −7.21 kJ mol −1 and 37.7 J mol −1 K −1 at 298 K, respectively, indicating that the extraction of Lu 3+ is an entropy-driven endothermic process. The loading capacities of 30% ( V / V ) HA toward Y, Yb and Lu were about 10.3 g/L (Y 2 O 3 ), 21.6 g/L (Yb 2 O 3 ) and 25.4 g/L (Lu 2 O 3 ), respectively. Among inorganic acids such as H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 and HCl, H 2 SO 4 was the most effective stripping acid, and 98% Yb 3+ can be stripped from the loaded organic phase by just one stage of stripping with 0.25 mol/L H 2 SO 4 . Therefore, HA would be a potential extractant for the separation of HREs.

Abstract:The extraction of low concentration rare earth elements at high phase ratio was investigated. The traditional extraction set-up, such as mixer-settler, have drawbacks of easy emulsification, difficult separation and low efficiency if operated at the above condition. Membrane dispersion micro-extractor, owing to its well-dispersed, high surface-to-volume ratio and fast mass transfer rate, was employed in our work. Nd(III), Eu(III), Er(III) were chosen to represent light, medium, heavy rare earth elements (REEs). The extraction process of REEs with 2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) was investigated by membrane dispersion micro-extractors. Firstly, the extraction equilibrium of these three elements was explored in the stirred conical flasks, and it is indicated that the extraction efficiencies can be 0.95, 0.97 and 0.98, respectively within 40 min at phase ratio of 100:1. Then the effects of operational conditions such as the residence time, organic and aqueous flow rates on extraction efficiency were also explored in micro-extractors. The results indicate that the efficiency decreases and then increases if increasing aqueous phase flow rate, residence time and droplets' diameter are the key factors of this process. Increasing the phase ratio reduces the extraction efficiency significantly. When the REEs solution has an initial pH of 4.00, the flow rates of continuous and dispersed phase are 40 and 1.6 mL/min, respectively, and 90 mg/L Nd (III), Eu(III) and Er(III) is extracted by 1 mol/L P507 at the out-let length of 8 m. The extraction efficiencies are 0.978, 0.983 and 0.991, respectively. Finally the stripping process was also studied with the micro-extractor. The stripping efficiencies of Nd(III), Eu(III) and Er(III) can reach 0.99, 0.96 and 0.91, respectively when the out-let length is 8 m and the concentration of hydrochloric acid is 1 mol/L. The developed approach offers a novel and simple strategy on the fast extraction and enrichment of low concentration rare earth elements from waste water. Abstract:The extraction and separation of five different rare-earth elements, La, Nd, Eu, Dy and Yb, from an aqueous chloride solution and from different chloride non-aqueous solutions using the solvating extractant Cyanex 923 was investigated. As previous studies had demonstrated the potential of non-aqueous solvent extraction (NASX) to refine rare earths from ethylene glycol, structural analogues of ethylene glycol (1,2-propanediol and 1,3-propanediol) and to other polar organic solvents (triethylene glycol, dimethylsulfoxide, methanol, N,N-dimethylformamide and N,N-dimethylacetamide) were studied. The extraction data were interpreted in terms of different solvent properties: dielectric constant, Gutmann donor number, molecular structure and hydrogen-bonding capabilities. Remarkable differences were observed between the extraction behaviour from ethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol and 1,3-propanediol. Therefore, these solvent systems were further studied to elucidate the speciation of the rare-earth elements by optical absorption and luminescence spectroscopy. Based on these studies, both contact-ion-pair formation and solvation strength are assumed to play an important role in the extraction of rare earths by Cyanex 923 from different polar organic solvents. The differences in extraction behaviour can be exploited to fine-tune the separation of rare earths.

Abstract:A solid-phase extraction resin SIRs-P227/XAD-7HP was prepared by impregnating extractant P227 onto macroporous resin XAD-7HP beads. SIRs-P227/XAD-7HP beads were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The adsorption kinetics, particle size effect, adsorption isotherm, pHequilibrium–lgD relationship (where D is distribution coefficient), desorption, adsorption selectivity for heavy rare earths, and impurity ions were studied. The results showed that the adsorption kinetics of Lu(III) on the SIRs-P227/XAD-7HP beads fitted the Morris–Weber model best. The adsorbance decreased as the particle size increased. The pHequilibrium–lgD relationship fitted well with a straight line, and the slope was 1.56. The experimental data fitted well with Langmuir adsorption. The calculated maximum adsorption capacity was 23.8 mg·g−1, while the experimental datum was 22.7 mg·g−1 at the given conditions. The adsorbed Lu(III) can be easily stripped by 0.1 mol·L−1 HCl. The adsorption selectivity of SIRs-P227/XAD-7HP for heavy REs exhibited the following order: Lu > Yb > Tm > Er > Ho. The adjacent heavy rare earth (RE) separation factors βLu/Yb, βYb/Tm, βTm/Er, and βEr/Ho were 1.57, 3.00, 3.03, and 2.23, respectively, at liquid/solid ratio (L/S) equal to 3:20. Development and optimization of high-performance extraction chromatography method for separation of rare earth elements

Abstract:The effectiveness of commonly used extractants for chromatographic separation of rare earth elements (REEs) was compared. Columns loaded with similar molar concentrations of tributyl phosphate (TBP), di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (HDEHP), and N-Methyl-N, N, N-tri-octyl-ammonium chloride (Aliquat-336), with mineral acid as eluent were evaluated. Retention factors were determined, and separation efficiency was assessed based on the resolution data of the REEs acquired under the same elution conditions for each column. HDEHP demonstrated the best separation efficiency for the entire REE series (mean Rs = 2.76), followed by TBP (mean Rs = 1.52), while Aliquat-336 exhibited the lowest performance (mean Rs = 1.42). The HDEHP-coated column was then used to optimize the extraction chromatographic separation of the REEs. The primary challenge was to completely elute the heavy REEs (Tb - Lu) while maintaining adequate separation of the light REEs (La - Gd) within a reasonably short time. The stepwise gradient elution procedure improved the resolution between adjacent REEs, allowing the complete separation of the entire REE series within 25 minutes. Better separation efficiency for light REEs was achieved at higher column temperatures and a mobile phase flow rate of 1.5 mL/min in the tested domain of 20-60 °C, and 0.5-2.0 mL/min, respectively, resulting in plate heights (H) ranging from 0.011 to 0.027 mm.

Abstract:The extraction of light rare earths (Pr and Nd) from chloride medium was investigated using a mixture of di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (P204) and bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (Cyanex272) in sulfonated kerosene. The P204+Cyanex272 system exerted a synergistic effect on the separation of light rare earths, and the separation coefficient was higher than when P204 and Cyanex272 were used as extractants alone. The separation coefficient of Pr and Nd in the extraction system reached 1.75 when the pH of the aqueous phase material solution was approximately 2.5, and 1.5 mol/L hydrochloric acid as a stripping agent effectively eluted the rare earth ions in the loaded organic phase. Combining the slope method, infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we explored the mechanism of the extracted Nd and Pr into the organic phase complex, and finally entered the organic phase with Re(HA2)2B. The P-O-H bond and P=O bond in the extractant P204 and Cyanex272 formed a coordination bond with Re3+. Therefore, this extraction method also provides a reference for a more environmentally friendly and efficient procedure for separation and purification of light rare earth elements Pr and Nd.
