Selection of the extractants for available rare earths in soils

Abstract:Six available RE extractants, including 0.01mol/L HCl, 0.05mol/L HCl, 1.0 mol/L NH 4OAc(pH7.0), 1.0mol/L NH 4NO 3(pH 7.0), 1.0mol/L HOAc NH 4OAc(pH 4.8) and 1.0mol/L NH 4Cl(pH 7.0),were used in to evaluating the avail ability of RE in 20 types of soils. By comparing the contents of RE extracted by these extractants, the relationship of available RE with RE content of reygrass intaked and with some soil properties and soil RE formations, the solution of 1.0 mol/L NH 4NO 3(pH 7.0)was suggested as a better chemical extractant for evaluating the availability of RE in soils.

Abstract:Ion-adsorbed rare earth minerals are rich in medium and heavy rare earth (RE), which are important strategic resources. In this article, a novel approach for the extraction of RE from ion adsorbed minerals was developed. Through a comprehensive assessment of their extraction and separation performance, the hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDES) with a composition of trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO): dodecanol (LA): 2-thiophenoyltrifluoroacetone (HTTA) = 1:1:1 was determined as the optimal configuration. Under optimized conditions, only RE were extracted by the HDES, while Al, Ca, Mg were not extracted at all. The HDES based extraction obviated the need for diluent such as kerosene, eliminating the generation of impurity removal residues. The RE in the stripping solution could be successfully enriched by saponified lauric acid, achieving an impressive precipitation rate of 99.7%. The RE precipitate underwent further enrichment, resulting in a RE concentration of 176 g/L (REO = 210 g/L). Unlike industrial precipitants such as oxalic acid and ammonium bicarbonate, lauric acid can be effectively recycled, thereby avoiding a large amount of wastewater and carbon dioxide emissions. The obtained RE solution product exhibits high yield and purity, this study provides an eco-friendly and high-yield approach for extracting RE.

Abstract:Two novel carboxylic acid based ionic liquids (ILs), benzyltributylammonium myristic acetate ([N444Bn][MA]) and benzyltributylammonium dodecanedioic acetate ([N444Bn]2[DDA]), have been rationally designed and successfully synthesized for the extraction of yttrium (denoted as Y(III)) from a chloride aqueous solution and for the separation of mixed rare earth elements (REEs). Comparison studies of the extraction performances of [N444Bn][MA] and [N444Bn]2[DDA] were carefully investigated under different conditions (e.g., equilibrium time, solution acidity, salting-out agent concentration, and REEs concentration). The results indicated that the extraction efficiency of Y(III) reached 87.18% after 2 min using [N444Bn]2[DDA], whereas it required 10 min to reach an extraction efficiency of 47.37% using [N444Bn][MA], mainly due to the larger electronegativity of the incorporated dicarboxylates in the anions of [N444Bn]2[DDA], which enhanced its coordination with Y(III) compared to [N444Bn][MA]. However, [N444Bn][MA] illustrated better selective separation behavior than [N444Bn]2[DDA] in mixed REEs solutions (including La, Nd, Eu, Ho, Yb and Y), and the selective factors of Yb and La were 16.21 and 3.30, respectively. Furthermore, the ion association mechanism, evolved from the slope analysis and FT-IR results, contributed to avoiding the saponification procedures and resultant saponification wastewater during the extraction process. In addition, the back-extraction experiments indicated that ~97% Y(III) can be stripped from [N444Bn]2[DDA] and [N444Bn][MA] using 1.0 M and 0.4 M HCl, respectively, demonstrating that these ILs can be further used in large-scale applications for the separation and recovery of REEs.

Abstract:Novel non-fluorinated ILs with hydrophobic nature was designed and successfully prepared.Endowing cation with carboxylic acid group facilitates the extraction capability of REEs.Different extraction mechanisms were determined with chloride and nitrate medium.Selective separation of Sc from lanthanides are realized with undiluted extraction system.Different affinity between La/Ni, Sm/Co benefits recycling of REEs in future applications.Developing the novel ionic liquids as the potential substitutes for conventional organic solvents in extraction of the rare-earth metals is highly desirable but remains facing challenges. In this study, the well-designed carboxylic acid functionalized phosphonium based ionic liquids, (4-carboxyl)butyl-trioctyl-phosphonium chloride/nitrate, are synthesized and characterized. The as-prepared samples are tested as the undiluted hydrophobic acidic extractant for rare-earth metal ions, affording the maximal loading of 3 mol/mol towards Nd(III) in aqueous solution and the remarkable stripping performance. The results also reveal their excellent extractability and selectivity for Sc(III) in the mixtures of six rare-earth ions, as well as the outstanding separation properties between rare-earth and first row transition-metal ions (i.e., La/Ni, Sm/Co). Moreover, the extraction mechanism indicates that the extracted rare-earth complex via a proton exchange in the ionic liquid phase is structurally similar to the complexes obtained with neutral extractants. This work presents a prototype for the fabrication of the hydrophobic cation-functionalized ionic liquids for highly efficient rare-earth extraction and provides the future application in recycling of rare-earth metals from the spent magnets.Novel carboxylic acid functionalized ILs were fabricated for highly efficient undiluted extractants for REEs. Different Extraction mechanisms were illustrated respectively in chloride or nitrate media, occurring via the typical proton exchange mechanism. Abstract:Recovering and concentrating rare earth metals (Nd and Dy) from waste permanent magnets rather than discarding them into the environment without pretreatment is critical for metal recycling and environmental responsibility. In this work, we used an undiluted hydrophobic pseudoprotic ionic liquid composed of trioctylamine and decanoic acid as an extractant to separate rare earth metals from aqueous media with a solvent extraction technique. This ionic liquid proved to be excellent with low viscosity and extractability reaching 100% for Nd and Dy in the presence of salts like sodium chloride and sodium nitrate. In acidic media, extractability decreased with increasing acid concentrations. Under all our experimental conditions, the rare earth metals (Nd and Dy) were found to be preferentially extracted compared to nickel with the distribution ratios of Dy higher than those of Nd.

Abstract:The extraction of low concentration rare earth elements at high phase ratio was investigated. The traditional extraction set-up, such as mixer-settler, have drawbacks of easy emulsification, difficult separation and low efficiency if operated at the above condition. Membrane dispersion micro-extractor, owing to its well-dispersed, high surface-to-volume ratio and fast mass transfer rate, was employed in our work. Nd(III), Eu(III), Er(III) were chosen to represent light, medium, heavy rare earth elements (REEs). The extraction process of REEs with 2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) was investigated by membrane dispersion micro-extractors. Firstly, the extraction equilibrium of these three elements was explored in the stirred conical flasks, and it is indicated that the extraction efficiencies can be 0.95, 0.97 and 0.98, respectively within 40 min at phase ratio of 100:1. Then the effects of operational conditions such as the residence time, organic and aqueous flow rates on extraction efficiency were also explored in micro-extractors. The results indicate that the efficiency decreases and then increases if increasing aqueous phase flow rate, residence time and droplets' diameter are the key factors of this process. Increasing the phase ratio reduces the extraction efficiency significantly. When the REEs solution has an initial pH of 4.00, the flow rates of continuous and dispersed phase are 40 and 1.6 mL/min, respectively, and 90 mg/L Nd (III), Eu(III) and Er(III) is extracted by 1 mol/L P507 at the out-let length of 8 m. The extraction efficiencies are 0.978, 0.983 and 0.991, respectively. Finally the stripping process was also studied with the micro-extractor. The stripping efficiencies of Nd(III), Eu(III) and Er(III) can reach 0.99, 0.96 and 0.91, respectively when the out-let length is 8 m and the concentration of hydrochloric acid is 1 mol/L. The developed approach offers a novel and simple strategy on the fast extraction and enrichment of low concentration rare earth elements from waste water. Abstract:Nonsymmetric (2,3-dimethylbutyl)(2,4,4′-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid (INET-3) may be a superior extractant for extraction and separation of heavy rare earths (REs), as its extraction ability falls between that of P507 and Cyanex 272. Its purity and pKa were determined using potentiometric titration methods. The extraction mechanism and extraction equilibrium constants of INET-3 for heavy REs from chloride media were studied. The effects of the anion types (Cl−, NO3− and SO42−) and concentrations (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0mol/L) on RE(III) extraction were investigated. The extraction capacity and separation factors of INET-3 for heavy REs were determined. The stripping behaviours of heavy RE complexes with INET-3 by HCl, HNO3 and H2SO4 were examined. The results showed that the pKa of INET-3 was 5.45. The extraction capacity of INET-3 was approximately twice that of Cyanex 272 and only one-third that of P507. Loaded heavy RE(III) extracted by INET-3 was completely stripped out by HCl, HNO3 and H2SO4 solutions when the pH was at or below 1.2. Among the three inorganic acids, H2SO4 was the most effective stripping agent. INET-3 can separate heavy RE(III) efficiently, and the separation factors of adjacent heavy RE(III) βEr/Ho, βTm/Er, βYb/Tm and βLu/Yb were 3.25, 2.73, 2.96 and 1.53, respectively, when extracted from a Ho/Er/Tm/Yb/Lu quinary system.

Abstract:The conventional solvent extraction set-up for low-concentration rare earth elements (REEs) at high phase ratios has shortcomings including large factories, long mixing times, high energy consumption, extractant loss and easy emulsification. In this work, a solvent extraction system for Nd(III) using 2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) was investigated to enhance extraction in a microfluidic device to solve the above problems. The effects of residence time and phase ratio on the extraction efficiency of a liquid-liquid system were studied. The results showed that extraction efficiency increased as the residence time increased significantly, and a longer channel was required to reach equilibrium for higher phase ratios than for others owing to the decreased oil flow rate and increased mass transfer distance. We also investigated the effects of outlet length, phase ratio, and gas flow rate on the extraction efficiency of a gas-liquid-liquid system. The results indicated that only 0.3 m of the outlet channel was required to reach equilibrium for the entire process, and the overall volume mass transfer coefficient k(L)a was 5-50 times larger than in systems without a gas phase. The enrichment factor could reach 200-450 with an initial concentration of 30-90 ppm, and the extraction efficiency was higher than 90% even at a high phase ratio of 200. A theoretical model was built to predict the intensification of extraction by the gas-filled hollow droplet. Finally, europium and erbium were chosen as the typical medium and heavy rare earth systems to prove the applicability of this method. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) containing quaternary phosphonium cations and phosphonic acid anions were explored as novel extractants for rare earths (RE) separation. They were considered to be bifunctional ionic liquid extractants (bif-ILEs), since both cations and anions of ILs were involved in the extraction. Trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium his 2,4,4-trimethylpentylphosphinate (Cyphos IL 104), as a bif-ILE, together with propylene carbonate (PC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), and soybean oil methyl ester (SBME, biodiesel) as diluents was employed in the extraction of RE(III) from aqueous solutions. Acidified Cyphos IL 104 (HNO3-Cyphos IL 104) exhibited high solubility in three diluents, and higher extraction efficiency than bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272) because of the coextraction of RE(III) by quaternary phosphonium cation and phosphonic acid anion in organic phase. Additionally, this coextraction mechanism could eliminate the loss of IL. Recovery of Rare Earths from Nitric Acid Leach Solutions of Phosphate Ores Using Solvent Extraction with a New Amide Extractant (TODGA)

Abstract:The rare earths in phosphate ores are not effectively utilized and they cannot be directly extracted from leach liquor with the traditional extractants, such as organic phosphoric acid. This paper presents a new solvent extraction method for rare earths from nitric acid leaching of phosphate rock using N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyl diglycol amide (TODGA) without interfering with the normal route for fertilizer production. When the concentration of extractant increased to 0.1 mol/L, the extraction rate of lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, and neodymium have been found to be 98.1%, 99.1%, 98.8% and 98.6%, respectively. The recovery rate reached to 99.9% when a three-stage countercurrent extraction was carried out on the simulated leach solution. There was almost no extraction of other impurity ions and the rare earths could be separated with TODGA from Ca2+, PO43-, Fe3+, and Mg2+. The presence of phosphoric acid in solution enhanced the extraction of rare earth ions. The stripping of the loaded rare earth in the organic phase was readily carried out with water under room temperature with high efficiency. The mixed rare earth oxides (REO) with an assay of > 95% could be recovered as a final product.

Abstract:As a relatively new extractant, di-(2,3-dimethylbutyl)-phosphinic acid(HYY-2) is more efficient to separate heavy rare earths Tm/Yb/Lu than Cyanex 272 and P507. In this paper, HYY-2 was synthesized in our lab, and the extraction equilibrium, thermodynamics and stripping acidity for La, Gd and Y, which stood for light rare earth elements(REE), middle REE and heavy REE respectively, from nitrate media with this extractant were investigated. Meanwhile, extraction ability, capacity and stripping acidity of HYY-2 were investigated and compared with those of Cyanex 272 and P507. The separation performance for rare earth element couples Gd/Eu and Er/Y were also studied. Compared to Cyanex 272, it possessed higher extraction capacity; while compared with P507, it has lower stripping acidity. The maximum β Gd/Eu 1.46 occurred at pH equilibrium =2.78 and the maximum β Er/Y was 1.47 when pH equilibrium = 2.01.

Solvent extraction and separation of light rare earths from chloride media using HDEHP-P350 system

Abstract:Solvent extraction is the most important method for rare earth extraction and separation. Currently, HDEHP and HEH/EHP are widely used in industrial production, but there are still obvious deficiencies that require further research to resolve. In this paper, the unsaponification extraction of light rare earth ions in a hydrochloric acid medium by HDEHP-P350 system was studied. The results show that the addition of P350 reduces the extraction capacity of HDEHP, and it also greatly reduces the concentration of acidity required for the back-extraction. It still has a good separation factor for light rare earths without saponification, and the extractant is not easy to emulsify. With an aqueous phase of pH=2.85, and HDEHP mole fraction of XHDEHP=0.9 (compared with O/A=2), the separation effect of light rare earth is the best, resulting in the separation coefficient βCe/La=3.39, βPr/Ce=1.67 and βNd/Pr= 1.45, respectively. The loaded light rare earth ions extracted by HDEHP-P350 can be easily stripped when 2 mol/L HCl is used as the stripping agent. Abstract:Rhenium has important applications in metallurgy, military, aviation, chemical, and petrochemical industries and related fields. Because the average concentration of rhenium in the Earth's crust is just one part per billion (ppb), it is necessary to research the separation and extraction of rhenium from its associated minerals or related solutions. In this study, rhenium extraction through demulsification of an alkyl imidazolium ionic liquid-based microemulsion was explored. Alkyl chain length, components of microemulsion, temperature, acid concentration, and competitive ions affecting rhenium extraction were thoroughly considered. The components of the microemulsion had a significant effect on the extraction process. Extraction efficiency improved with the increase in the alkyl chain length, but it decreased with the rising concentration of nitric acid. The concentration of alkyl imidazole cations in the continuous phase had obvious effects on extraction efficiency. Thermodynamic studies showed the process was endothermic and spontaneous. The extraction mechanisms were an anion exchange and electrostatic attraction between the two N atoms of the imidazole ring and water (H2O) or perthenate (ReO4-) forming the complex ([Omim]ReO4)center dot(HReO4). Thus, the extraction efficiency of the microemulsion system was about 1.6 times greater than that of the performance of ionic liquids alone. A microemulsion system can be damaged by a strong electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance effect between the adjacent imidazole rings on the interface of the microemulsion droplet after rhenium extraction. The extraction system is a potential application for the selective separation and extraction of rhenium from simulated radionuclide liquid waste through adjustments to the acidity concentration. Findings of this study provide some basic data regarding the technology for separating and extracting rhenium in future.

Abstract:The extraction and separation of heavy rare earths is always one of the most challenging unit operations in hydrometallurgy. Research and development of novel efficient extractant is one way to solve this problem. Organophosphinic acid is a good potential extractant. A new method was established for the synthesis of nonsymmetric dialkylphosphinic acid (NSDAPA) (R′R″POOH, R′≠R″), optimized the synthesizing conditions of the key intermediate mono-alkylphosphinic acid and successfully synthesized three novel extractants (n-octyl)(2,4,4′-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, (n-octyl)(cyclohexyl)phosphinic acid and (2,3-dimethylbutyl) (2,4,4′-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid. The extraction ability of the novel extractants was investigated. The structure–property relationship and the separation performance for heavy rare earth couples Er/Y, Y/Ho, Yb/Tm and Lu/Yb were evaluated.

Abstract:Synergistic extraction of trivalent rare earths (RE=Sc, Y, La, Gd, Yb) from hydrochloride medium using mixture of bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid (HL, Cyanex272) and Sec-nonylphenoxy acetic acid (HA, CA-100) in n-heptane has been studied. The synergistic enhancement coefficients were observed for La (1.30), Gd (1.97), Y (3.59), Yb (8.21) and Sc (14.41). The results indicated yttrium was extracted into n-heptane as YH5A4L4 mixed species instead of Y(HL2)3, Y(OH)2A(HA)3 which were extracted by Cyanex272 and CA-100, respectively. A cation exchange mechanism was proposed and further clarified by IR spectra. The equilibrium constants, formation constants and thermodynamic functions such as ΔG, ΔH and ΔS were determined. The Cyanex272+CA-100 system not only enhanced the extraction efficiency of RE but also improved the selectivities significantly. The mutual separation factors of these ions suggested the mixture system would be of practical value in extraction and separation of rare earths.

Abstract:A successful extraction process relies heavily on an excellent extractant structure. The theory of extractant structure and extraction performance is still insufficient to guide the design of new extractants, despite extensive research into extractants. However, diglycolamide extractants have demonstrated certain advantages in nuclear fuel reprocessing and rare earth extraction and separation. This paper focuses on the synthesis of 13 structurally serially changed extractants. The relationship between the structure and performance of extractants was systematically studied by the combination of theoretical calculations and experimental data to investigate the effects of symmetric, asymmetric and branched N-substituents on extraction performance.
