Abstract:We demonstrate the electrochemical etching of gold in a solution of hydrofluoric acid and dimethylformamide (DMF) to fabricate nanoporous gold (NpAu) films. Compared to de-alloyed NpAu, the electrochemically etched NpAu exhibits controllable pore size and etching depth by adjusting the etching conditions. We propose an etching mechanism where the organic electrolyte DMF protects the nascent gold pore walls by slowing the dissolution of gold oxide. At the same time, localized reactions occurring at the gold electrode surface focus the etching current for etching into depth. We further modify the as-prepared NpAu surface with single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and use the nanotube-decorated surface as an electrochemical sensor to detect bisphenol A, an endocrine disruptor chemical. A 100 nM limit of detection is achieved by combining the catalytic capacity of SWCNTs with the specific surface area of a NpAu electrode.

Abstract:The main developments of the research in fabrication of nanometer-spaced electrodes abroad and at home are introduced.Especially,a new technology to produce the electrodes by combining the selective chemical deposition with common lithography is described and the following related research subjects are discussed.The Ni double-electrodes with the separation of less than 100 nm have been fabricated by that technology.The technology has some advantages for fabricating the nanometer-spaced electrodes.

Abstract:There is an urgent need in surface mount technology (SMT) for a nontoxic, reusable and low temperature bonding technique which can afford good mechanical support as well as electrical contact. Meanwhile in the nanotechnology, many excellent and unique structure-related properties such as the high mechanical strength, the high conductivity and the adhesion ability of gecko feet have been studied. Our lab proposes a new patterned structure of Au nanowire array named nanowire surface fastener (NSF), which cold bonding for surface mount technology can be realized at room temperature. Then various methods have been developed to fabricate nanowire, such as arc discharge, catalytic CVD growth and template synthesis, and so on. Among these methods, the template method has been widely used for preparing one-dimensional nanostructures such as metals, semiconductors, polymers, and other materials by electrochemical, electroless deposition or sol-gel technique. Especially anodic aluminum oxide template assisted way has attached considerable attention due to its unique structure properties, such as controllable pore diameter, extremely narrow pore size distribution with high densities, high aspect ratios, and ideally cylindrical pore shape. The well arranged porous anodic aluminum oxide membrane is fabricated from aluminum film by two steps zM oxalic acid electrolytes. The anodic aluminum oxide membrane was investigated for features such as pore size, interpore distance, and thickness by 40 V. It is important for fabrication of porous anodic aluminum oxide template to find out elimination of the barrier layer of oxide and the pore extending rate by 0.5 M phosphoric acid. Morphologies of surface of aluminum film between anodization process and the anodic aluminum oxide barrier layer was researched by using atomic force microscope and scanning electron microscope. Results showed that the anodic aluminum oxide having the same diameter of the pore and the well arranged pore array without branching channel was obtained. The diameter of the pore before the pore extending treatment is 42 nm and the diameter of the pore after the pore extending treatment for 30 minutes is 86 nm. It was found that the diameter of the pore increased per 15 nm by the pore extending treatment for 10 minutes. We fabricated the through-hole anodic aluminum oxide template and made Cu nanowire by the template of our own making. By using Cu nanowire, we try to produce nanowire surface fastener and evaluate its properties.

Abstract:This paper describes the fabrication of Au nanowire utilizing porous aluminum. To fabricate nanowires, at first Au film with the thickness of 100 nm was evaporated on one side of porous aluminum as a conductive working electrode. Nanowires were obtained via electrodeposition under a constant electrical potential about -3 V in 40g/l KAu(CN)_2, 100g/l KH_2PO_4 aqueous solution at room temperature. After etching in 3 M NaOH aqueous solution to remove porous aluminum, nanowires with the average diameter of 200 nm and length 8 approximately, were observed by scanning electron microscope. It was confirmed that the nanowires consisted of Au by energy dispersive X-ray analysis.

Abstract:An electrochemical technique for fabricating nanogaps is proposed, which utilizes an in situ gap-impedance-tuning mechanism to realize precise control of gap separation. Nanogap electrodes with gap separation from tens of nanometer to sub 10 nm have been fabricated by combining conventional photolithography and this controlled electrodeposition technique. The gap separation can be tuned by changing monitoring parameters based on a homemade electrochemical setup, which provides high sensitivity and reproducibility. In addition, a possible mechanism for controlling gap separation at tens of nanometer level at present conditions was discussed.

Abstract:A simple and highly reproducible technique is demonstrated for the fabrication of metallic electrodes with nanometer separation. Commercially available bare gold colloidal nanoparticles are first trapped between prefabricated large-separation electrodes to form a low-resistance bridge by an ac electric field. A large dc voltage is then applied to break the bridge via electromigration at room temperature, which consistently produces gaps in the sub-10 nm range. The technique is readily applied to prefabricated electrodes with separation up to 1 μm, which can be defined using optical lithography. The simple fabrication scheme will facilitate electronic transport studies of individual nanostructures made by chemical synthesis. As an example, measurement of a thiol-coated gold nanoparticle showing a clear Coulomb staircase is presented.

Abstract:Despite great improvements in the past decades, the controllable fabrication of metal nanoelectrodes still remains very challenging. In this work, a simple and general way to fabricate metal nanoelectrodes (Ag, Au, and Pt) is developed. On the basis of interfacial reactions at nano-liquid/liquid interfaces supported at nanopipettes, the nanoparticles can be formed in situ and have been used to block the orifices of pipettes to make nanoelectrodes. The effect of the driving force for interfacial reaction at the liquid/liquid interface, the ratio of redox species in organic and aqueous phases, and the surface charge of the inner wall of a pipette have been studied. The fabricated nanoelectrodes have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical techniques. A silver electrode with about 10 nm in radius has been employed as the scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) probe to explore the thickness of a water/nitrobenzene (W/NB) interface, and this value is equal to 0.8 ± 0.1 nm (n = 5). This method of fabrication of nanoelectrodes can be extended to other metal or semiconductor electrodes.

Abstract:The characteristic of nanowire is gradually attracting many researchers with the potential applications of nano devices, nano sensors, solar sells and so on. This paper describes fabrication and evaluation of high density Cu nanowire array grown in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template. To fabricate high density nanowire array, at first Au films with the thickness of 100 nm was evaporated on one side of AAO template as a conductive working electrode. Nanowire array was formed via electro deposition under a constant current of 0.001 A approximately in copper sulfate aqueous solution at room temperature. After etching in 3 M NaOH aqueous solution for 30min to remove porous aluminum, we obtained high density nanowire array perpendicular to PDMS substrate. High density Cu nanowire arrays with diameters of 80 nm, approximately, were observed by scanning electron microscope. In order to understand the performances of Cu nanowire array, the electrical and mechanical properties of them were studied in details. As a result, the shear adhesion was 8.2 kPa, and the electrical resistance was 7.0Ω・cm^2.

Abstract:This article summarizes our recent effort to fabricate electrochemically metallic nanowires and electrodes separated with molecular scale nanogaps. The nanowires were fabricated by etching a small portion of a micron-scale metallic wire supported on a solid substrate. The etching was controlled by continuously monitoring the conductance of the wire. When the thinnest portion of the wire reached the atomic scale, the conductance decreased in a stepwise fashion. By further etching away the last few atoms, a molecular-scale gap between two electrodes was created and the ballistic electron transport through the nanowire was replaced with quantum tunneling. By depositing atoms back, the above processes could be reversed, allowing us to achieve a desired nanowire or gap. The nanowires may be used for chemical sensor applications and the nanogaps may be used to wire small molecules to the outside world for molecular electronics applications.

Abstract:An easily manipulative approach was presented to fabricate electrodes using free-standing single-walled carbon nanotube （SWCNT） films grown directly by chemical vapor deposition.Electrochemical properties of the electrodes were investigated.In comparison with the post-deposited SWCNT papers,the directly grown SWCNT film electrodes manifested enhanced electrochemical properties and sensitivity of sensors as well as excellent electrocatalytic activities.A transition from macroelectrode to nanoelectrode behaviours was observed with the increase of scan rate.The heat treatment of the SWCNT film electrodes increased the current signals of electrochemical analyser and background current,because the heat-treatment of the SWCNTs in air could create more oxide defects on the walls of the SWCNTs and make the surfaces of SWCNTs more hydrophilic.The excellent electrochemical properties of the directly grown and heat-treated free-standing SWCNT film electrodes show the potentials in biological and electrocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Nanoelectrodes are fabricated from individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) connected to tungsten probes or carbon fibers. The whole electrode was covered by an insulating HfO2 layer except for a section of conducting CNT at the apex. The fabrication process includes mounting individual CNTs to the conductive support through nanomanipulation, coating the whole probe by a dielectric layer using atomic layer deposition and removing the dielectric layer at the apex through a nanomanipulation process. Differential pulse voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry measurements show the CNT nanoelectrode has similar electrochemical behavior to the widely used carbon fiber probe, but has a much smaller active electrode area and can provide much higher spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio.

Abstract:Nanoelectrode arrays have been widely used in electroanalytical applications. The challenge is to develop low-cost and simple approaches to the fabrication of superuniform and ultrasmall nanoelectrode arrays for improving analytical performance and imaging resolution. Here, superuniform and high-density gold nanoelectrode arrays with tunable electrode diameters and interelectrode distances have been fabricated by electrodeposition, followed by a simple mechanical polishing process. The fabricated free-standing arrays have a high density (108 cm-2) of nanoelectrodes (60, 140, and 200 nm in diameter), and can be used as closed bipolar electrode arrays to image electrochemical heterogeneity with micrometer spatial resolution. With the help of a confocal microscope, individual nanoelectrodes can be visualized and resolved from the reflected light. Thus, the nanoelectrode arrays are promising in electrochemical imaging with high spatial resolution.

Abstract:In this study, silver/silver-tetracyanoquinodimethane nanowires with excellent microstructure quality are prepared by combining the nanoskiving method with the solution reaction method, and their electrical properties are tested. The perpendicular cutting direction and larger cutting thickness are beneficial to the acquisition of complete and less deformed silver nanowires. Silver/silver-tetracyanoquinodimethane heterogeneous nanowires can be precisely prepared at small droplet concentration, small droplet volume, and 60 s reaction time. The continuity, dimensions, and formation mechanism of nanowires are characterized by atomic force microscope and scanning electron microscope. Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope revealed the successful formation and core-shell structure of silver-tetracyanoquinodimethane nanowires. The electrical properties of silver/silver-tetracyanoquinodimethane heterostructure nanowires show a typical Schottky barrier using a two-point electrical measurement method. This work lays a solid foundation for promoting the engineering application of silver nanowires and silver/silver-tetracyanoquinodimethane heterogeneous nanowires.

Abstract:Scanning probe is the key issue for the electrochemical scanning probe techniques (EC-SPM) such as EC-scanning tunnel microscopy (STM), EC-atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), especially the insulative encapsulation of the nanoelectrode probe for both positioning and electrochemical feedbacks. To solve this problem, we develop a novel fabrication method of the gold nanoelectrodes: firstly, a micropipette with nanomter-sized orifice was prepared as the template by a laser puller; secondly, the inside wall of micropipette apex was blocked by compact and conic Au nano-piece through electroless plating; thirdly, the Au nano-piece was grown by bipolar electroplating and connected with a silver wire as a current collector. The fabricated Au nanoelectrode has very good voltammetric responses for the electrodic processes of both mass transfer and adsorption. The advantage lies in that it is well encapsulated by a thin glass sealing layer with a RG value lowered to 1.3, which makes it qualified in the SECM-STM coupling mode. On one hand, it can serve as STM tip for positioning which ensures the high spatial resolution; on the other hand, it is a high-quality nanoelectrode to explore the local chemical activity of the substrate. The nanofabrication method may promote the SPM techniques to obtain simultaneously the physical and chemical images with nanoscale spatial resolution, which opens a new approach to tip chemistry in electrochemical nanocatalysis and tip-enhanced spectroscopy.

Abstract:We introduce a solution-based electrodeposition technique that selectively deposits copper only at the contacts between nanowires/nanobelts/nanotubes and the electrodes, while leaving the device surfaces clean. This was achieved using a copper nitrate bath with low covering power. Our method demonstrates an effective, parallel process for achieving stable electric and mechanical contacts for one-dimensional nanomaterial-based devices on a large scale. Abstract:Molecular electronics is often limited by the lack of a simple method to fabricate nanoelectrodes with controlled gap size. This is partly attributed to the lack of a real time characterization in the fabrication. Here, we report a new method based on an electron induced deposition process operated in scanning electron microscopy that realizes in situ and real time characterization in the nanoelectrode fabrication; thus the gap size can be controlled easily and precisely. It is a clean and nondestructive process for carbon nanotube (CNT) electrodes. The mechanism is detailed. The nanoelectrodes have a pi-conjugated surface due to the deposition of sp(2)-rich amorphous carbon. As an application, DNA molecules are assembled between the CNT electrodes by pi-stacking interaction for current-voltage measurement. Our result provides a feasible route to prepare nanoelectrodes with controlled gap size, and it will be valuable for current efforts in molecular electronics and nanoelectronics.
Controllable assembly of the Au nanowire in micro/nano structure by templateless electro-deposition

Abstract:A novel templateless electrochemical deposition method for controllable assembly of Au nanowire in micro/nano structure was proposed. This method could assemble various nano-patterns (individual, array, network etc.) by utilizing different parameters and characterizes simple-apparatus, low-cost and innoxious-electrolyte. The characterization results prove the fabricated Au nanowires were single-crystal structure with tens of nanometers diameter. The measurement results of the electrical characteristics demonstrate that the Au nanowire has good electric conductivity (the resistivity is 2.64 Ã 10-7 Â¿Â·m). It had the application potentials in micro/nano interconnection, bio/chemical sensors etc..
Controllably Constructing Gold Nanostructures on Electrodes Through Growth of Zinc Oxide Nanorods and Two-Step Electroplating

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new fabrication approach for controllably constructing gold composite nanostructures on electrodes. The approach involves an electro-hydrothermal growth of ZnO nanorods incorporating with two-step gold electroplating. The gold nanostructures constructed in the first-step electroplating are spherical nanoparticles with diameters of hundreds of nanometers, while the gold nanostructures constructed on the nanoparticles in the second-step electroplating are tinier with tens of nanometers and have diverse shapes (flocculent, grainy, rod-like, and sheet-like) depending on applied electroplating voltages. The gold composite nanostructures offer unique benefits for microelectrodes, for example greatly reducing double-layer impedance and greatly enhancing Raman scattering. This fabrication method is universal and offers a promising pathway for constructing gold nanostructures on electrodes selectively and controllably at low cost and in mass production.

Abstract:Gold nanofilms consisting of networked, cross-linked nanowires were synthesised in large quantities by the integration of electrochemical deposition and dielectrophoresis. The resultant products were characterised by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. On the basis of finite-element modelling of the electrode system in terms of the theory of dielectrophoresis and electromagnetism, the authors found that the growth of gold nanowires responded highly to the inhomogeneous electric fields. Also, the morphologies of the gold nanofilm evolve with the deposition time and frequency. Numerical simulations and theoretical analyses offer useful insights into the mechanism. The above study provides strong evidence that this electrochemical and template-free route is a powerful and universal technique to the synthesis for improving nanofilms performance. This strategy can be transplanted into the synthesis of other metallic nanofilms, such as silver and copper.
