Abstract:Ionic thermoelectric materials, for example, polyelectrolytes such as polystyrene sulfonate sodium (PSSNa), constitute a new class of materials which are attracting interest because of their large Seebeck coefficient and the possibility that they could be used in ionic thermoelectric SCs (ITESCs) and field effect transistors. However, pure polyelectrolyte membranes are not robust or flexible. In this paper, the preparation of ionic thermoelectric paper using a simple, scalable and cost-effective method is described. After a composite was fabricated with nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC), the resulting NFC–PSSNa paper is flexible and mechanically robust, which is desirable if it is to be used in roll-to-roll processes. The robust NFC–PSSNa thermoelectric paper combines high ionic conductivity (9 mS cm⁻¹), high ionic Seebeck coefficient (8.4 mV K⁻¹) and low thermal conductivity (0.75 W m⁻¹ K⁻¹) at 100% relative humidity, resulting in overall figure-of-merit of 0.025 at room temperature which is slightly better than that for the PSSNa alone. Fabricating a composite with cellulose enables flexibility and robustness and this is an advance which will enable future scaling up the manufacturing of ITESCs, but also enables its use for new applications for conformable thermoelectric devices and flexible electronics.

Abstract:There has been increasing interest in the emerging ionic thermoelectric materials with huge ionic thermopower. However, it’s challenging to selectively tune the thermopower of all-solid-state polymer materials because the transportation of ions in all-solid-state polymers is much more complex than those of liquid-dominated gels. Herein, this work provides all-solid-state polymer materials with a wide tunable thermopower range (+20~−6 mV K −1 ), which is different from previously reported gels. Moreover, the mechanism of p - n conversion in all-solid-state ionic thermoelectric polymer material at the atomic scale was presented based on the analysis of Eastman entropy changes by molecular dynamics simulation, which provides a general strategy for tuning ionic thermopower and is beneficial to understand the fundamental mechanism of the p - n conversion. Furthermore, a self-powered ionic thermoelectric thermal sensor fabricated by the developed p - and n -type polymers demonstrated high sensitivity and durability, extending the application of ionic thermoelectric materials.
Numerical Simulation On Ionic Wind Heat Transfer In A Thermoelectric Cooling Sysytem

Abstract:Thermoelectric cooling is one of the most attractive alternative cooling technologies, but its applications are limited for some negative characteristics. In a thermoelectric cooling system, the temperature difference between the thermoelectric module's hot and cold side is one of the key factors, which affects its performance and characteristics. In order to increase the COP of the thermoelectric cooling system and overcome its existing negative characteristics, ionic wind is applied to enhance its heat transfer at the hot and cold sides. Ionic wind has an advantage of no moving parts; and hence, it is regarded an attractive method to enhance convection heat transfer. In this paper, a mathematical model on convective heat transfer of ionic wind, which is used to cooling the thermoelectric cooling system, is present, and numerical simulation is conducted. The effects of its main parameters, i.e., electric field, flow field and temperature field are analyzed on ionic wind heat transfer. As a result, the forced convective heat transfer coefficient of ionic wind is obtained. The comparisons between the forced convective heat transfer coefficients of ionic wind and the natural convective one are also carried out. It is found that the heat transfer could be effectively enhanced. In addition, the influences of the polar-plate distance and voltage on the electrodes are investigated on the enhancement of heat transfer.
