Abstract:In this letter, we first demonstrate a core-pumped passively mode-locked all-normal-dispersion ytterbium-doped fiber oscillator based on nonlinear polarization evolution operating around 980 nm. The dissipative soliton fiber laser pulse can be compressed down to 250 fs with 1 nJ pulse energy, and the slope efficiency of the oscillator can be as high as 19%. To improve the dissipative soliton laser output spectrum smoothness, we replace the birefringent plate based intracavity filter with a diffraction-grating based filter. The output pulse duration can then be further compressed down to 180 fs with improved spectral-smoothness. These schemes have potential applications in seeding cryogenic Yb:YLF amplifiers and underwater exploration of marine resources.

Abstract:We report an all-normal-dispersion, low-repetition-rate, high-energy, twin-pulse, passively mode locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser. The mode-locking mechanism of the laser is based on nonlinear polarization evolution and strong pulse shaping with a cascade long-period fiber grating bandpass filtering in a highly chirped pulse. The laser generates a highly stable twin-pulse group with 248 ps and 296 ps duration simultaneously and maximum pulse energy of 26.8 nJ-each pulse at a 2.5445 MHz repetition rate. Energy quantization is observed, which demonstrates the nonparabolic nature of these pulses. The laser can also work in third-harmonic mode locking with 17.8 nJ energy (at a repetition rate of 7.65 MHz and pulse width of 780 ps).

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-normal-dispersion mode-locked fiber laser based on a piece of large-core Yb-doped multi-mode fiber. High order modes are suppressed by coiling the gain fiber to produce large loss for the high modes but low loss for the fundamental mode. Mode-locking is self-starting by exploiting a combination of a grating-aperture based spectral filter with a nonlinear polarization evolution effect. The laser directly delivers 1.1 ps, 107 nJ pulses at a repetition rate of 76.7 MHz, with an average power of up to 8.2 W. The pulses can be compressed externally to 210 fs with a peak power of up to 350 kW.

Abstract:We report a 1030 nm-wavelength Yb:fiber laser that produces the shortest/direct output pulse duration (502 fs) among all-normal-dispersion fiber lasers at the highest repetition rate (605 MHz) among the passively fundamentally mode-locked fiber lasers. Abstract:We demonstrate a low-repetition-rate all-fiber all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped mode-locked fiber laser. Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

Abstract:We report on a self-starting mode-locked all-polarization-maintaining fiber laser using a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. It delivers a 7.81 MHz train of pulses with an average power of 213 mW, corresponding to pulse energy higher than 27 nJ. The output chirped pulses can be recompressed down to ∼114fs with a grating pair compressor. The nonlinear phase shifts accumulated in the long fiber cavity can be used to compensate for the mismatched third order dispersion and increase the compressed pulse quality. The laser shows excellent stability and environmental robustness during the test.

When the pump power was 300 mW, a pulse with a maximum average output power of 0.63 mW, a narrowest pulse duration of 1.22 ps and a pulse repetition rate of 14.25 MHz was obtained.

Abstract:A new architecture which is based on the chirped pulse amplification scheme is proposed to increase the pulse energy of the mode-locked fiber laser. The idea was applied to a passively mode-locked laser using an ytterbium (Yb/sup 3+/)-doped double-clad silica fiber. Mode-locking was achieved by nonlinear polarization evolution associated to frequency-shifted feedback technique for self-starting. A compressor and a stretcher, based on diffraction gratings, permitted us to manage the dispersion and to reduce the pulse power in the fiber. The laser delivered chirped pulses at 1050 nm with 11.8-nJ energy at a 9.3-MHz repetition rate (110-mW average power) which were subsequently compressed to 196-fs duration.

Abstract:We report on a mode-locked high energy fiber laser operating in the dispersion compensation free regime. The sigma cavity is constructed with a saturable absorber mirror and short-length large-mode-area photonic crystal fiber. The laser generates positively-chirped pulses with an energy of 265 nJ at a repetition rate of 10.18 MHz in a stable and self-starting operation. The pulses are compressible down to 400 fs leading to a peak power of 500 kW. Numerical simulations accurately reflect the experimental results and reveal the mechanisms for self consistent intracavity pulse evolution. With this performance mode-locked fiber lasers can compete with state-of-the-art bulk femtosecond oscillators for the first time and pulse energy scaling beyond the muJ-level appears to be feasible.

Abstract:We report on high-energy ultrashort pulse generation from a passively mode-locked ytterbium-doped large-mode-area photonic crystal fiber oscillator operating in the anomalous dispersion regime. In the single-pulse regime, the laser directly generates 880 mW of average power of sub-500 fs pulses at a repetition rate of 53.33 MHz, corresponding to a pulse energy of 16.5 nJ. Stable and self-starting operation is obtained by adapting the spot size at the saturable absorber mirror to the pulse evolution in the low-nonlinearity fiber. The approach presented demonstrates the scaling potential of fiber based short pulse oscillators towards the microJ-level.

Abstract:AbstractA tunable dual- and triple-wavelength passively mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser in the all-normal-dispersion regime is reported and demonstrated. Using a phase-shifted long-period fiber grating as an all-fiber format spectral filter in the laser cavity, a self-starting stabilized multi-wavelength mode-locking operation is achieved by nonlinear polarization evolution. The mode-locked multi-wavelength output can be tuned continuously and smoothly over a spectral range of 10 nm using the phase-shifted long-period fiber grating bandpass filter without re-adjusting any elements in the system. It opens a new possibility to achieve tunable and controllable multi-wavelength mode-locked high-energy laser output in the all-normal-dispersion cavity in an all-fiber format.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-polarization-maintaining (PM) ytterbium (Yb)-doped fiber laser with a figure-of-9 structure to generate mode-locked pulses with high single pulse energy and high repetition frequency. By exploiting the nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM), a stably self-started mode-locking is achieved with a spectrum bandwidth of 13 nm and a pulse duration of 4.53 ps. The fundamental frequency is 97.966 MHz at the maximum output power of 143 mW in single pulse mode-locked operation, corresponding to the single pulse energy is 1.46 nJ. The output pulses maintain both high repetition frequency and high single-pulse energy. Moreover, the superior stability of the mode-locked operation was measured in 45 minutes. This laser oscillator can be an ideal seed source for applications such as high-energy amplifiers.

Abstract:We report on a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser with a repetition rate as low as 1.2 MHz in a strong normal dispersion regime. The laser was mode locked via spectral filtering. Abstract:We demonstrate a mode-locked long all-polarization-maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. The fiber oscillator directly delivers 221 ps chirped pulses at the repetition rate of 448 kHz. The pulses can be further amplified up to 134 nJ and compressed down to 870 fs by a grating pair.
