Abstract:Oxygen, an odorless and colorless gas constituent of the atmosphere, is a vital gas component for the Earth, as it makes up 21% of the composition of the air we breathe. Apart from the importance of oxygen for human breathing, its highly pure form is demanding for industrial applications. As such, several technologies have been established to increase the oxygen purity from 21% to somewhat higher than 95%. One of the competitive technologies for producing this high-purity oxygen from the air is through pressure swing adsorption (PSA), which has the advantages of low cost and energy while being highly efficient. Also, PSA is a simple and flexible system due to its ability to start up and shut down more rapidly since its operation occurs at ambient temperature, which is enabled through the use of adsorbents to bind and separate the air molecules. The enhancement of the PSA's performances was reported through the modification of PSA step cycles and material (zeolite) tailoring. A simplified complete set of a mathematical model is included for modelling the PSA system, aiming to ease the experimental burden of the process design and optimization of an infinite modification of PSA step cycles. Finally, some technological importance of oxygen production via PSA, particularly for onboard oxygen generation system and oxy-enriched incineration of municipal solid waste, was discussed. Continuous development of PSA will make significant contributions to a wide range of chemical industries in the near future, be it for oxygen production or other gas separation applications.

Abstract:Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) oxygen generation mini-plant is widely used in all various hospitals for its fast, convenient, and cost-effective features. However, considering the landscape of global markets, the PSA medical oxygen generation mini-plant design basis varies from location to location. Therefore, it forces the manufacturer to design and build the PSA oxygen generation mini-plant more flexibly to enable its compatibility in different extreme ambient conditions (temperature, humidity, pressure, cleanliness) of installation location. For the sake of these concerns, this paper employs the concept of modularity as an approach to PSA medical-grade oxygen generation mini-plant design and application and elaborates 10 key components for 4 modules of PSA medical-grade oxygen generation mini-plant, namely (a) air compressor module; (b) PSA module; (c) oxygen compressor module; (d) smart control module. Under this modularized design approach, this paper investigates the technical features and the design criticality of modular and key components in fulfilling the expected performance, finally achieving and maintaining the overall performance of PSA oxygen generation mini-plant with the selected modules which may be installed worldwide. This paper helps to highlight the variability of PSA oxygen generation mini-plants in harsh environments in four dimensions (temperature, humidity, pressure, cleanliness) and briefs the methodology of the phase gate model for modular approach in oxygen generation mini-plant. It contributes to the literature on this important subject in the modularized design method, adsorption technology, air separation process, etc.

Abstract:Methane steam reforming is the main hydrogen production method in the industry. The product of methane steam reforming contains H2, CH4, CO and CO2 and is then purified by pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology. In this study, a layered two-bed PSA process was designed theoretically to purify H2 from methane steam reforming off gas. The effects of adsorption pressure, adsorption time and purge-to-feed ratio (P/F ratio) on process performance were investigated to design a PSA process with more than 99.95% purity and 80% recovery. Since the feed composition of the PSA process changes with the upstream process, the effect of the feed composition on the process performance was discussed as well. The result showed that the increase of CH4 concentration, which was the weakest adsorbate, would have a negative impact on product purity.

Abstract:Inhaled nitric monoxide (iNO) is increasingly used as a medical treatment for acute respiratory distress syndrome. A course of the existing nitric monoxide (NO) therapy with gas cylinders could cost up to approximately $15,000 for an average of 30.2 h. Moreover, a gas cylinder containing a mixture of N-2 and NO may potentially leak NO. The objective of this study is to develop an efficient and cost-effective on site iNO generation system. In the present setup, NO was generated by using dry air or mixed oxygen/nitrogen (O-2/N-2) and an AC power source with an output power level of 5-30 W at atmospheric pressure. The simultaneously produced NO2 was eliminated with an ammonium sulfite ((NH4)(2)SO3) solution. The effects of the O-2/N-2 ratio, gas flow rate, discharge gap distance, output energy density and electrode structure on NOx concentration and the NO/NO2 ratio are reported. The concentrations of NO and NO2 reached 62 ppm and 3 ppm, respectively, after absorption and dilution at a gas flow rate of 6 L/min. With the present setup, the AC arc discharge produced NOx at a stable concentration for at least 6 h using dry air. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Improvement on oxygen (O2) concentrator using pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology according to variable product demands is of great significance, which, for instance, provides the key step for success in practical O2 therapy for COVID-19 patients who need to be delivered with a wide flow range (1 – 15 standard liter per minute (SLPM)) of medical O2 (purity >82%). This work studied the individual effects of major PSA process parameters on O2 production performance at the product flow rate of 3.46 – 19.88 SLPM (0.64 – 3.68 SLPM per kilogram of adsorbent (SLPM/kg)), based on a self-designed two-bed PSA unit with a modified Skarstom cycle using Li-LSX zeolite adsorbents. The improvement strategies were accordingly proposed based upon influential mechanisms of each parameter: 1) at lower product flow rates (≤2.00 SLPM/kg), increasing the purge flow rate and decreasing the adsorption pressure to suppress excess O2 adsorption, and decreasing the feed flow rate to ensure low energy consumption; 2) at higher product flow rates (≥2.00 SLPM/kg), decreasing the purge flow rate and increasing the adsorption pressure to eliminate N2 breakthrough and O2-rich product waste, and appropriately increasing the feed flow rate to enhance cost-effectiveness. An improved set of parameters (at 3.46 – 19.88 SLPM) rendered O2 purity (95.67 – 74.86%), recovery (11.28 – 49.05%), productivity (0.47 – 2.04 mmol/kg/s) increased by up to 3.52 – 20.08%, 0.36 – 20.47%, 6.82 – 19.61%, and energy consumption (4.07 – 0.95 kWh/kgO2) decreased by up to 10.56 – 18.10%, respectively, in comparison to two conventional sets. The results are beneficial for realizing intellectualized and flexibly-controlled O2 concentrators for practical applications.

Abstract:The use of high purity oxygen as a feeding gas in microbial fermentation has recent gained huge attention in industrial scale process due to its advantageous effect to increase viable cell density as well as target metabolite productivity. However, usage of highly pure oxygen is currently too expensive for industrialization. To overcome this limitation, off-gas recycle pressure swing adsorption (PSA) was employed which assist in continuous production of high purity oxygen during fermentation process. The off-gas from fermentation process contained about 70 ∼ 80% oxygen which was re-utilized as the input gas in PSA, whereas conventional PSA process utilized air with 21% oxygen content. This difference in the oxygen content of the input gas decreased the size of PSA, resulting in reduction of equipment costs. Using the characteristics of off-gas recycle PSA, we analyzed and compared the economic feasibility of a highly pure oxygen supplying strategy for the production of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) by Ralstonia eutropha based on previously reported data, using both air and highly pure oxygen. To achieve annual production of 3,630 tonnes of PHB the aforementioned method was adopted, by doing so the production cost of PHB was significantly reduced to 4.2 $/kg. While, the conventional process (utilizing air as the feeding gas) resulted in the highest cost (5.9 $/kg). The low cost of off-gas recycle PSA was due to reduction of fixed capital cost, which was about 3 times lower than that of the conventional fermentation process. Therefore, the production cost of fermentation was considerably decreased by using a highly pure oxygen supplying strategy based on off-gas recycle PSA.

Abstract:Background:In response to critical gaps in medical oxygen access, 2 pressure swing adsorption (PSA) oxygen production centers were established using an ecosystem-strengthening strategy in Amhara, Ethiopia, in 2019. A qualitative study was conducted to assess enablers and bottlenecks to oxygen access at the hospital level after installation.Methods:A variety of hospital staff (clinicians, biomedical professionals, hospital administrators, and procurement teams) across 13 hospitals procuring oxygen from the plants participated in comprehensive, semistructured focus group discussions. A thematic framework analysis approach was used to identify key themes.Findings:A total of 101 individuals participated in 26 focus groups in 2021, 2 years after plants were installed. Primary themes were accessibility of supply, affordability, and hospital readiness. Respondents indicated a substantial increase in their hospital's ability to access lower-cost oxygen, with many attributing this to the locality of plants and reduced transportation barriers. However, other challenges persisted, and the emergence of COVID-19 1 year after plant installation and a civil conflict exacerbated supply shortages. Investments in equipment, supplies, and training optimized clinical utilization of oxygen and were highlighted as a need for ongoing investment.Conclusion:To achieve maximum impact, investments in large-scale oxygen systems must be accompanied by strategic plans to transport oxygen, reduce costs to hospitals, and provide support to clinical teams through equipment, supply procurement, and clinical training. These findings support comprehensive ecosystem approaches to strengthening oxygen access for sustainable impact.

Abstract:To enhance the oxygen guarantee capacity in high altitude areas and address the challenges of traditional pressure swing adsorption oxygen generation fixed equipment with large volume and multiple device modules, a novel single-reversible-pump single-bed vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) oxygen generation process was proposed and simulated. This study investigated the effects of purge on oxygen productivity, purity, recovery, and energy consumption, determining that the optimum ratio of total oxygen in the purge gas to the total oxygen in the feed gas (P/F) was 0.176. A set of principle prototypes was developed and validated in plains. The process performance was then simulated and studied at altitudes of 3000 m, 4000 m, and 5000 m. Finally, the optimization was carried out by adjusting the product flow rate and feed flow rate, revealing that the best performance can be achieved when the oxygen purity exceeded 90% with lower energy consumption or larger productivity than the optimization goal. This study serves as a valuable reference for the optimization of the VPSA oxygen generation process in a plateau environment.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the production of high purity oxygen (90–95%) through experiments in a PSA/VSA unit and develop a mathematical model to describe the dynamic behavior of the process. Different operational parameters and the dead volume were investigated for their impact on process performance. The experiments used a laboratory-scale unit filled with beads of a commercial LiX zeolite to obtain breakthrough and PSA/VSA data for model validation. Equilibrium isotherms of pure oxygen and nitrogen were measured at 288, 298 and 313 K for the pressure range of 0 to 3 bar. Single and multicomponent breakthrough curves were obtained at 298 K. Synthetic air (grade 5.0 purity, excluding argon) with a composition of 20% (± 0.5%) O 2 and 80% (± 0.5%) N 2 was used in the PSA/VSA experiments. A novel approach was developed using the mathematical model designed to simulate PSA/VSA cycles to account for the dead volume effects commonly found in units of this type. The model was implemented and solved using gPROMS® software. The simulation data matched well with the experimental data, accurately representing histories of concentration, pressure, temperature, and purity variations during the process. The validated model revealed optimal operating conditions for a VSA unit: 7.5 s adsorption time, 1.5 bar adsorption pressure, 0.1 bar desorption pressure, and a flow rate of 1 SLPM, producing a purity of approximately 94% and a recovery of about 20%. Increasing the adsorption duration negatively affected the oxygen purity but positively influenced process recovery and productivity. Adding an equalization stage improved process recovery by 18.9% for PSA and 14.5% for VSA. Additionally, increased dead volume in the column had adverse effects on purity, productivity, and recovery for both PSA and VSA units.

Abstract:The trade-off between hydrogen recovery ratio (HRR) and hydrogen purity (HP) is one of the main drawbacks in normal temperature pressure swing adsorption (NT-PSA) for producing high-purity hydrogen from shifted gas. In this paper, a two-train elevated-temperature pressure swing adsorption (ET-PSA) process that achieved 99.999% HP and over 95% HRR is proposed, which has wide application potentials in fuel cells and chemical industries. Potassium-promoted layered double oxide (K-LDO), which shows reasonable working capacity and fast adsorption/desorption kinetics at elevated temperatures (200-450 degrees C), is adopted as the CO2 adsorbent. CO in the shifted gas is co-purified by high-temperature water gas shift (WGS) catalysts added to the columns. The first train ET-PSA adopted an eight-column thirteen-step configuration with shorter step time to remove most of the CO/CO2 in the shifted gas, and the second-train ET-PSA adopted a double-column seven-step configuration with longer step time to purify the residual gas impurities. The introduction of co-current high-pressure steam rinse and counter-current low-pressure steam purge is the key to achieve both high HRR and HP. The high-temperature steam is the main energy consumption of ET-PSA rather than low HRR in NT-PSA, and the total steam consumption is reduced by adopting the tail gas from second-train ET-PSA as the purge gas for first-train ET-PSA. The optimal results achieved 97.51% HRR and 99.9994% HP with only 0.188 rinse-to-feed ratio and 0.263 purge-to-feed ratio, which are the highest values reported for PSAs producing high-purity hydrogen from carbon based fuels.

Abstract:Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) is a well-established gas separation technique in air separation, gas drying, and hydrogen purification separation. Recently, PSA technology has been applied in other areas like methane purification from natural and biogas and has a tremendous potential to expand its utilization. It is known that the adsorbent material employed in a PSA process is extremely important in defining its properties, but it has also been demonstrated that process engineering can improve the performance of PSA units significantly. This paper aims to provide an overview of the fundamentals of PSA process while focusing specifically on different innovative engineering approaches that contributed to continuous improvement of PSA performance.

Abstract:Elevated temperature pressure swing adsorption (ET-PSA) is a novel process for hydrogen purification. By operating steam rinse and purge at conditions beyond the dew point will significantly improve the recovery rate of the product gas. Moreover, since cooling and reheating processes are not needed in ET-PSA, the sensible heat of the incoming gas could also be preserved. In this study, a seven-column 5000 Nm 3 /h ET-PSA pilot scale model was designed for energy consumption analysis. Product H 2 purity, recovery rate, product CO 2 purity, CO 2 capture rate, unit H 2 purification energy consumption and unit CO 2 capture energy consumption were set as the criteria for assessing the purification performance. Rinse pressure, rinse media, and desorption method were selected as variables during the design and optimisation of the ET-PSA process. Herein, a high process efficiency (99.98% product gas purity and 99.33% recovery) was achieved. These values increased by 5.38% and 4.44%, respectively, compared to the base case. Meanwhile, the CO 2 capture energy consumption was reduced by 59.2 MJ/ton(CO 2 ).

Abstract:Biogas upgrading is an attractive solution to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, presenting an alternative renewable source of energy to meet the SDG 13 and SDG 7 of the UN charters. Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) distinguishes itself from water scrubbing, amine absorption, and cryogenic separation methods in CO 2 separation from biogas mixtures by offering lower energy consumption, enhanced purity, and immunity to corrosion issues. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the current development status, research trends, and emerging frontiers of PSA in biogas upgrading. Leveraging the bibliometric analysis capabilities of VOSViewer software, a total of 127 articles related to CO 2 separation from CH 4 streams using PSA technology were scrutinized for specific characteristics, including publication year, authors, institutions, countries, references, and keywords. Co-citation analysis, complemented by content analysis of highly cited articles, identifies four primary research streams: i) modifications to existing PSA system designs, ii) development of novel adsorbents, iii) exploration of composite materials and diverse bed configurations, and iv) simulation studies for comprehensive mass and energy analyses. This study unveils current trends, global collaboration patterns, foundational knowledge, research hotspots, and emerging frontiers in the field of CO 2 separation from CH 4 streams using PSA technology.

Abstract:The field in which pure oxygen aeration is applied to sewage treatment is extensive. In actual application it is more suitable for the degradation of industrial sewage. Pure oxygen aeration has unique merit compared with common air aeration. This article introduced the effect by pure oxygen aeration. The study shows pure oxygen aeration is an effective pollutant removal mechanism, and at the same time proposes the best dissolved oxygen is at 3 mg/l. The average removal rates of COD cr , NH 3 -N, TN are 73%, 50%, 55% respectively. The conclusion is that pure oxygen aeration for hospital wastewater the CODcr removing rate is higher than ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen efficiency.

Abstract:Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) appears to be an effective technology for biogas upgrading under different operating conditions with low greenhouse gas emissions. This study presents the simulation of biomethane adsorption with the adsorption bed filled with a carbon molecular sieve (CMS). A six dual-bed six-step PSA process was studied which produced a high purity of biomethane. The design of the adsorption bed was followed by the real process of which the biomethane capacity was more than 5000 Nm3/h. For the adsorbent, a CMS-3K was used, and a biomethane gas with a minimum 92% purity was produced at 6.5 bar adsorption pressure. To understand the adsorption characteristics of the CH4 and CO2 gases, the Langmuir isotherm model was used to determine the isotherm of a mixed gas containing 55% CH4 and 45% CO2. Furthermore, the experimental data from the work of Cavenati et al. were used to investigate the kinetic parameter and mass transfer coefficient. The mass transfer coefficients of two species were determined to be 0.0008 s−1 and 0.018 s−1 at 306 K for CH4 and CO2, respectively. The PSA process was then simulated with a cyclic steady state until the relative tolerance was 0.0005, which was then used to predict the CH4 and CO2 mole fraction along the adsorption bed length at a steady state. Moreover, the optimal conditions were analyzed using Aspen Adsorption to simulate various key operating parameters, such as flowrate, adsorption pressure and adsorption time. The results show a good agreement between the simulated results and the real operating data obtained from the company REBiofuel. Finally, the sensitivity analysis for the major parameters was presented. The optimal conditions were found to be an adsorption pressure of 6 bar, an adsorption time of 250 s and a purity of up to 97.92% with a flowrate reducing to 2000 Nm3/h. This study can serve as a commercial approach to reduce operating costs.

Abstract:With the increasing standards of safety management in nuclear power plants, Living Probabilistic Safety Assessment (Living PSA) technology has begin to play an increasingly important role in their operation. This paper aims to provide an overview of the application and development of Living Probabilistic Safety Assessment (Living PSA) technology in nuclear power plant safety monitoring and risk assessment, examining the key technologies and future challenges. Initially, we summarize the current safety needs in regard to nuclear power, examine the policy on configuration risk management technology for nuclear power plants, and outline its importance and development process in nuclear power plant safety management. Subsequently, we discuss the basic principle of Living PSAs and the working method of risk monitoring based on Living PSAs, including information monitoring data collection, online identification, real-time model updating, and risk calculation. Within the Living PSA framework, model development is not merely about creating a theoretical or static representation; it is a dynamic and ongoing process that involves a deep understanding and precise simulation of the behavior of nuclear power plant systems and components. This represents the main research efforts in Living PSAs at present. Additionally, this paper identifies the key technologies of Living PSAs in an in-depth manner, such as the reliability-model-updating technology and model building in dynamic reliability analyses, including the fault tree model, multi-layer flow model, GO-FLOW model etc. The paper lists the work of some scholars in this area in recent years, which helps readers and researchers to clearly understand the current progress of Living PSA technologies in terms of model establishment and updating. Finally, the paper summarizes the challenges and future development of Living PSA and emphasizes the possible problems in data quality, human factor engineering, and the development of Living PSA technologies in the future. In the future, Living PSAs will provide more solid support for the realization of safer and more economical methods of operating nuclear power plants.

Abstract:Air pollution is a widely discussed topic amongst the academic and industrial spheres as it can bring adverse effects to human health and economic loss. As humans spend most of their time at the office and at home, good indoor air quality with enriched oxygen concentration is particularly important. In this study, polysulfone (PSF) hollow fiber membranes fabricated by dry-jet wet phase inversion method were coated by a layer of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) or poly(ether block amide) (PEBAX) at different concentrations and used to evaluate their performance in gas separation for oxygen enrichment. The surface-coated membranes were characterized using SEM and EDX to determine the coating layer thickness and surface chemical properties, respectively. Results from the gas permeation study revealed that the PSF membrane coated with PDMS offered higher permeance and selectivity compared to the membrane coated with PEBAX. The best performing PDMS-coated membrane demonstrated oxygen and nitrogen gas permeance of 18.31 and 4.01 GPU, respectively with oxygen/nitrogen selectivity of 4.56. Meanwhile, the PEBAX-coated membrane only showed 12.23 and 3.11 GPU for oxygen and nitrogen gas, respectively with a selectivity of 3.94. It can be concluded the PDMS coating is more promising for PSF hollow fiber membrane compared to the PEBAX coating for the oxygen enrichment process.

Abstract:Industrial hydrogen-rich waste streams hold promises in their upgrading to feed fuel cell stacks. As in the ammonia synthesis process, a stream of up to 180–240 Nm3 per ton of ammonia is purged to keep the inert gases concentration below a threshold value; this stream contains large hydrogen quantities, which could be recovered. In the current work, a four-column PSA unit has been used to produce a high-purity hydrogen stream for fuel cell applications from a synthetic mixture with a molar composition of 58% H2, 25% N2, 15% CH4 and 2% Ar, based on ammonia purge gas. Firstly, a comparative performance of four commercially adsorbents was accomplished to obtain the adsorption isotherms of H2, N2, CH4, and Ar, leading to the selection of 5A zeolite adsorbent. Then, the dynamic behavior of a packed bed was studied by single and multicomponent breakthrough experiments and simulated using Aspen Adsorption®. The results, simulations and experimental, indicate that after H2 the first impurity to break thought the column is Ar, followed by N2 and finally by CH4. Then, a design-of-experiments (DoE) methodology was used to select the best operating conditions of the experimental cyclic PSA unit to reach different target hydrogen product concentrations; the overall PSA performance was evaluated in terms of purity and recovery of H2 product. According to the results, the four-column PSA unit running at 9 bar produced a stream with hydrogen concentration of 99.25% and 99.97% of H2, with a recovery of 75.3% and 55.5%, respectively, where the impurities were mostly Ar and N2. In addition to the technical performance, the economic assessment concluded that the cost to compress, transport and purify waste hydrogen to a concentration of 99.97% using a small-scale PSA unit from ammonia plants has been estimated in the range of 1.17–1.39 € kg H2−1, depending on the dispensing pressure of 350 or 700 bar, respectively. These assessments offer a cost-effective solution to produce high-purity H2 as low cost transportation, allowing hydrogen penetration into the mass markets.
