Abstract:Methane steam reforming is the main hydrogen production method in the industry. The product of methane steam reforming contains H2, CH4, CO and CO2 and is then purified by pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology. In this study, a layered two-bed PSA process was designed theoretically to purify H2 from methane steam reforming off gas. The effects of adsorption pressure, adsorption time and purge-to-feed ratio (P/F ratio) on process performance were investigated to design a PSA process with more than 99.95% purity and 80% recovery. Since the feed composition of the PSA process changes with the upstream process, the effect of the feed composition on the process performance was discussed as well. The result showed that the increase of CH4 concentration, which was the weakest adsorbate, would have a negative impact on product purity.

Separation of glutathione by aqueous two-phase extraction combined with temperature-induced phase separation

Abstract:The techniques for separation of glutathione (GSH) by aqueous two-phase extraction combined with temperature-induced phase separation were studied. The partition behavior of GSH in ethylene oxide-propylene oxide random copolymer (EOPO)/hydroxypropyl starch (PES)/water systems was investigated. The effects of such factors, as concentration of polymer, pH, on the partition coefficients in two separation processes (aqueous two-phase extraction and temperature-induced phase separation) were studied. The optimum conditions are EOPO4000 13%, PES100 10%, pH=10.5. The separation technique for GSH from yeast cell was also investigated. A feasible separation scheme was suggested, and the results show that the total extraction yield can reach over 80%.
Two-train Elevated-Temperature Pressure Swing Adsorption for High-Purity Hydrogen Production

Abstract:The trade-off between hydrogen recovery ratio (HRR) and hydrogen purity (HP) is one of the main drawbacks in normal temperature pressure swing adsorption (NT-PSA) for producing high-purity hydrogen from shifted gas. In this paper, a two-train elevated-temperature pressure swing adsorption (ET-PSA) process that achieved 99.999% HP and over 95% HRR is proposed, which has wide application potentials in fuel cells and chemical industries. Potassium-promoted layered double oxide (K-LDO), which shows reasonable working capacity and fast adsorption/desorption kinetics at elevated temperatures (200-450 degrees C), is adopted as the CO2 adsorbent. CO in the shifted gas is co-purified by high-temperature water gas shift (WGS) catalysts added to the columns. The first train ET-PSA adopted an eight-column thirteen-step configuration with shorter step time to remove most of the CO/CO2 in the shifted gas, and the second-train ET-PSA adopted a double-column seven-step configuration with longer step time to purify the residual gas impurities. The introduction of co-current high-pressure steam rinse and counter-current low-pressure steam purge is the key to achieve both high HRR and HP. The high-temperature steam is the main energy consumption of ET-PSA rather than low HRR in NT-PSA, and the total steam consumption is reduced by adopting the tail gas from second-train ET-PSA as the purge gas for first-train ET-PSA. The optimal results achieved 97.51% HRR and 99.9994% HP with only 0.188 rinse-to-feed ratio and 0.263 purge-to-feed ratio, which are the highest values reported for PSAs producing high-purity hydrogen from carbon based fuels.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy,as an important carrier for achieving sustainable development,is of great significance for building a clean,low-carbon,and efficient energy system and achieving the"dual carbon"goals.This article designs a complete process for hydrogen separation,which is simulated and analyzed using software Aspen Plus.By proposing a coupled hydrogen separation system consisting of pressure swing adsorption(PSA),rectisol,and membrane separation,and using software such as Aspen Plus for simulation and analysis,the advantages of various separation technologies were combined.The integration of multiple separation processes has broken the purity bottleneck of single membrane separation,resulting in a product hydrogen concentration of up to 99.67%.In addition,it achieves the enrichment of CO2 and the recycling of CH4,reducing the loss of hydrogen production raw materials.The entire system has better separation performance compared to existing single technology,providing new insights and application potential for other gas separation problems.

Abstract:AbstractIt is well known in the industry that a primary means for controlling the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process product gas purity is the adjustment of PSA feed time or adsorption time. If the product impurity is too high, the feed time is shortened and if the impurity level is below the target the feed time is increased. Conventionally, the plant operator monitors the product purity and manually adjusts the feed time. Several control methodologies such as classical feedback and feedforward systems were suggested to automate this task with limited success. A novel control methodology based on the measurement of impurity fronts within the adsorber bed was developed by the Praxair Adsorption R&D team. The response of the concentration measurements inside the adsorber vessel to the process upsets and changes in feed time is more rapid than in the product stream. Consequently, closed loop control performance can be made much more effective and the operating impurity set points for product gas can be more aggressive resulting in longer PSA feed times, higher bed utilization and thus higher hydrogen recovery. The control methodology will be discussed in greater detail along with the advantages it has to offer such as improved process performance, disturbance rejection capability and improved process robustness. The control methodology will be illustrated using the hydrogen PSA process as an example.

Abstract:Industrial hydrogen-rich waste streams hold promises in their upgrading to feed fuel cell stacks. As in the ammonia synthesis process, a stream of up to 180–240 Nm3 per ton of ammonia is purged to keep the inert gases concentration below a threshold value; this stream contains large hydrogen quantities, which could be recovered. In the current work, a four-column PSA unit has been used to produce a high-purity hydrogen stream for fuel cell applications from a synthetic mixture with a molar composition of 58% H2, 25% N2, 15% CH4 and 2% Ar, based on ammonia purge gas. Firstly, a comparative performance of four commercially adsorbents was accomplished to obtain the adsorption isotherms of H2, N2, CH4, and Ar, leading to the selection of 5A zeolite adsorbent. Then, the dynamic behavior of a packed bed was studied by single and multicomponent breakthrough experiments and simulated using Aspen Adsorption®. The results, simulations and experimental, indicate that after H2 the first impurity to break thought the column is Ar, followed by N2 and finally by CH4. Then, a design-of-experiments (DoE) methodology was used to select the best operating conditions of the experimental cyclic PSA unit to reach different target hydrogen product concentrations; the overall PSA performance was evaluated in terms of purity and recovery of H2 product. According to the results, the four-column PSA unit running at 9 bar produced a stream with hydrogen concentration of 99.25% and 99.97% of H2, with a recovery of 75.3% and 55.5%, respectively, where the impurities were mostly Ar and N2. In addition to the technical performance, the economic assessment concluded that the cost to compress, transport and purify waste hydrogen to a concentration of 99.97% using a small-scale PSA unit from ammonia plants has been estimated in the range of 1.17–1.39 € kg H2−1, depending on the dispensing pressure of 350 or 700 bar, respectively. These assessments offer a cost-effective solution to produce high-purity H2 as low cost transportation, allowing hydrogen penetration into the mass markets.

Abstract:The demand for clean energy sources has made H2 recovery from various lean hydrogen mixtures increasingly attractive. In this study, parallel and series pressure swing adsorption (PSA) processes were investigated experimentally and theoretically, and > 99% pure H2 was produced from a lean hydrogen mixture (H2:CO:N2:CO2 = 19.9:0.1:44.6:35.4 mol%) at 10 bar. A mathematical model for a PSA process using activated carbon and zeolite 13X was simultaneously validated with results from breakthrough experiments and a parallel two-bed PSA process. The parallel two-bed PSA process using a layered bed (lower bed: activated carbon, upper bed: zeolite 13X) experimentally produced H2 with a purity of 94.6–98.3% and a recovery of 33.5–63.2%; CO was not detected in the H2 product. In the parallel four-bed PSA process, the H2 recovery was drastically increased to 77.3% due to an additional pressure equalization step, but the increase in H2 purity was minute. The series PSA process, which was divided into the bulk separator and the purifier, was theoretically studied under various operating conditions. The series three- and four-bed PSA processes could produce H2 with over > 99% purity and a recovery of 62.478% and 82.643%, respectively, due to the additional pressure equalization step and the utilization of blowdown gas. The parallel four-bed PSA process showed the highest H2 productivity (33.58 molH2 kgads −1 day−1), while the series four-bed PSA process achieved an H2 productivity of 23.96 molH2 kgads −1 day−1 with > 99% H2 purity.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to investigate the potential use of the ITQ-12 zeolite in a PSA process to obtain purified hydrogen from the SMR product stream using molecular simulation. Since the main components of the product stream are hydrogen and carbon dioxide, we put the focus on the separation of these two gases. The separation of hydrogen from the other components (methane, carbon monoxide and nitrogen) will be briefly touched upon as well. From inspection of the adsorption isotherms of carbon dioxide and hydrogen in ITQ-12 we found that the former gas dominates at industrially relevant conditions (311 K and 16 ⋅105 Pa). Breakthrough curves reveal that the ITQ-12 zeolite is likely to perform well in a PSA process for the separation of hydrogen from carbon dioxide. We found that in general higher column lengths and lower gas feed velocities are favorable for a good separation while higher gas feed velocities are favorable for the cleansing of carbon dioxide from the column. For the full mixture it is necessary to employ longer column lengths in order to separate hydrogen from the other components. This is because nitrogen and carbon monoxide exhibit retention times similar to hydrogen, though the latter still travels through the column the fastest. Alternatively the use of ITQ-12 could be combined with other separation techniques, where ITQ-12 is used to mainly remove CO 2 and CH 4 from the SMR product stream. These findings suggest that SMR could become an economically viable way to produce hydrogen by using ITQ-12 in the separation process.

Abstract:Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) is a well-established gas separation technique in air separation, gas drying, and hydrogen purification separation. Recently, PSA technology has been applied in other areas like methane purification from natural and biogas and has a tremendous potential to expand its utilization. It is known that the adsorbent material employed in a PSA process is extremely important in defining its properties, but it has also been demonstrated that process engineering can improve the performance of PSA units significantly. This paper aims to provide an overview of the fundamentals of PSA process while focusing specifically on different innovative engineering approaches that contributed to continuous improvement of PSA performance.
Application of Elevated Temperature Pressure Swing Adsorption in Hydrogen Production from Syngas

Abstract:A clean and energy-efficient power system can be developed by the combination of hydrogen (as an energy carrier) and fuel cells (as power generation units); such system has the potential to compete with the current energy consumption pattern of direct combustion of fossil fuels. A novel CO/CO 2 purification process, called the elevated-temperature pressure swing adsorption (ET-PSA), is coupled into an integrated gasification fuel cell (IGFC) power plant system in this work. A quantitative evaluation standard for the purification energy consumption is developed by considering both the net power efficiency loss of the IGFC after introducing the purification unit, and the total CO/CO 2 removal rate. The sensible heat loss of syngas and the thermal regeneration of the saturated adsorbents are avoided; consequently, the calculated energy consumption of the ET-PSA (1.11 MJ/kg) process using the ideal purification unit as the base case is 36.2% lower than of the conventional solvent absorption method. Alternatively, high-temperature steam is consumed in the ET-PSA process during the rinse and purge steps, which leads to a decrease in the output power of the steam turbine. The purification energy consumption of the ET-PSA process can be further reduced either by increasing the hydrogen recovery ratio or by reducing the total steam consumption.
Study and demonstration of H2/CO2 separation of syngas from coal by elevated temperature pressure swing adsorption

Abstract:Purification section of syngas from coal is located after water gas shift to remove hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide as the main gas impurities and obtain high purity hydrogen. At present, the mature purification processes include wet method represented by low temperature methanol scrubbing and liquid nitrogen scrubbing, and dry method represented by pressure swing adsorption decarburization. The operating temperature of the elevated temperature pressure swing adsorption technology proposed is consistent with the temperature of the incoming shift gas. Self-made hydrophobic nitrogen-rich activated carbon adsorbent was deployed to achieve desulfurization and carburization by increasing the traditional pressure swing adsorption operating temperature to 170-220 ℃ and high humidity environment. Two new PSA steps, high pressure steam rinse and low pressure nitrogen purge, were adopted to improve H 2 recovery to above 99%. The elevated temperature pressure swing adsorption H 2 /CO 2 separation demonstration with a processing capacity of 5 000 m~3/h（standard condition）was built and operated using coal based shift gas from Quanji Plant as the feedstock for the pilot plant. The purity of hydrogen reaches the hydrogen fuel level（including N 2 ） through two-stage ETPSA, and the pilot plant has been running for more than 2 800 hours in total. In addition, the energy consumption of the pilot plant was calculated based on the utilities expenses. When taking power consumption into consideration, the operation cost of H 2 purification for the pilot test can be significantly reduced by about 35% compared with the power consumption of H 2 purification by low temperature methanol scrubbing at Fengxi Plant. This technology breaks through the limitation of temperature of conventional adsorption and purification for solid adsorbents, and realizes directional removal of impurities in hydrogen by using adsorbents with preferred selective adsorption performance at elevated temperature, which confirms a new process route for efficient and high-quality hydrogen purification.

Abstract:The petrochemical industry has a significant demand for high-purity hydrogen. It primarily obtained from the H2 purification unit by using pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology to recover H2 from medium-temperature shifting gas (MTSG). The the coupled wet CO2 separation-PSA process was introduced in this work, aiming to capture CO2 from MTSG while simultaneously increasing the H2 recovery rate. To enhance the desorption pressure of CO2 separation unit in the coupled process to facilitate the storage or utilization of the captured CO2, firstly, a rigorous thermodynamic study was carried out to provide a theoretical basis for the development of an improved CO2 solvent. Subsequently, a pilot-scale test was executed to validate the theoretical findings. Finally, the patented coupled process was implemented at an industrial scale for the first time. The results showed that the capacity of PSA unit for H2 purification increased from 6800 to 12,000 tons per year and the H2 recovery rate increased from 84.6 % to 93.6 %; the CO2 desorption pressure increased from about 0.03 MPa (traditional Benfield process) to 0.15 MPa, which reduced the energy consumption of CO2 compression, and the total average annual economic benefits increased by US $ 15.55 million.

Hydrogen Purification Performance of Pressure Swing Adsorption Based on Cu-BTC/zeolite 5A Layered Bed

Abstract:A pressure swing adsorption (PSA) hydrogen purification model for the four-component gas (H 2 /CO 2 /CH 4 /CO = 73/16/8/3 mol%) in a layered bed packed with Cu-BTC and zeolite 5A was established to achieve better hydrogen purification performance. By comparing its simulation results with the experimental data, the adsorption isotherm model was validated and could be used to accurately describe the adsorption process of the gas mixture on the two adsorbents. The breakthrough curves of the mixed gas on the layered bed were studied to verify the correctness of the established simulation models. Based on the validated model, the performance of the PSA system based on the layered bed was carried out, including the hydrogen purity and recovery. The simulation results show that the hydrogen purification system based on the layered bed model can achieve hydrogen purity of 95.469% and hydrogen recovery of 83.219%. Moreover, a parametric study was carried out and its results show that reductions in feed flow rate and adsorption time result in an increase in hydrogen purity and a decrease in hydrogen recovery. A longer equalization time between the two adsorption beds can simultaneously increase the hydrogen purity and recovery.

Abstract:The present work proposes a modelling and optimization framework for hybrid pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and membrane processes for gas separations. The hybrid PSA/membrane scheme has been applied on the process of hydrogen production from steam methane reformer off gas. Three different hybrid separation schemes have been considered and analyzed. Maximum overall hydrogen recovery has been achieved for given minimum requirements in product purity, while optimizing various PSA and membrane operating and design parameters: the number of adsorption columns, PSA cycle configurations, the number of pressure equalizations/co-current depressurization steps, multiple adsorbent layers, PSA and membrane feed pressure, purge-to-feed ratio, bed length, carbon-to zeolite ratio, membrane area, thickness, and support thickness. The optimization results have been compared to the optimization results of the PSA only case and the benefits of hybrid separation systems have been assessed in terms of the improvements in the overall hydrogen recovery (~2 %), reduction of adsorption beds size (up to 46 %), concentration of the carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide captured in a separate stream (up to 76 %), and reduction of the carbon dioxide content in the waste gases (up to 74 %).

Abstract:The hydrogen recovered from tail gas of a clean fuel production system based on indirect coal liquefaction technology could be used as a source gas of hydrogenation.It is beneficial to environment protection and waste gas utilization.The advantages of pressure swing adsorption(PSA) include high effi-(ciency,) automatical operation,low capital investment and operating cost.In order to simulate the multicom-(ponent separation) process in a clean fuel production system,an implicit backward finite difference method was used to solve the equations of PSA.After about 10 cycles,the steady-state was achieved.(After) analysis of simulated data,the factors influcing on product concentration were summerized.

Abstract:Elevated temperature pressure swing adsorption (ET-PSA) is a novel process for hydrogen purification. By operating steam rinse and purge at conditions beyond the dew point will significantly improve the recovery rate of the product gas. Moreover, since cooling and reheating processes are not needed in ET-PSA, the sensible heat of the incoming gas could also be preserved. In this study, a seven-column 5000 Nm 3 /h ET-PSA pilot scale model was designed for energy consumption analysis. Product H 2 purity, recovery rate, product CO 2 purity, CO 2 capture rate, unit H 2 purification energy consumption and unit CO 2 capture energy consumption were set as the criteria for assessing the purification performance. Rinse pressure, rinse media, and desorption method were selected as variables during the design and optimisation of the ET-PSA process. Herein, a high process efficiency (99.98% product gas purity and 99.33% recovery) was achieved. These values increased by 5.38% and 4.44%, respectively, compared to the base case. Meanwhile, the CO 2 capture energy consumption was reduced by 59.2 MJ/ton(CO 2 ).

Abstract:Methanol steam reforming (MSR) has been used for in-situ hydrogen production, while hydrogen purification remains a technical challenge to limit the applications of using hydrogen for fuel cells. This study presents a pure hydrogen generation system (PHGS) by integrating MSR and hydrogen purification modules, this system enables low-temperature reforming and high-temperature purification to achieve high yield and recovery of hydrogen. To investigate the combined effects of feedstock flow rates and pressure on MSR and purification, the performance of each module and overall PHGS system were tested. The results showed that PHGS can stably produce high purity hydrogen (>99.99%) under different conditions, the synergistic effects of two modules lead to hydrogen yield exceeding the numerical sum of individual modules. At methanol feed rate of 1.00 g/min and system pressure of 5.0 bar, the pure hydrogen flow rate, CO content, pure hydrogen yield, hydrogen recovery and thermal power output were tested about 1.70 +/- 0.01 L/min, 2.4 +/- 0.1 ppm, 81.1 +/- 0.5%, 87.6 +/- 0.5% and 350 W. The PHGS can deliver up to 500 W of thermal power and is suitable for small range-extended electric vehicles. Our work on the developed PHGS can provide a significant reference for future practical applications of systems combining MSR and membrane purification.

Abstract:In the study herein we focused on enantioseparation of phenylsuccinic acid (PSA) enantiomers using an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) composed of ethanol and ammonium sulfate. Based on phase-forming points and salting-out points, a modified phase diagram of ethanol/ammonium sulfate system with three distinct phase areas, including homogeneous area, ATPS area and salting-out area, has been constructed experimentally. The ATPS optimization and evaluation of chiral separation efficiency for PSA enantiomers have been investigated thoroughly. A hydrophilic chiral selector, hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD), which has good chiral recognition ability for R-PSA, was added into bottom phase. The chiral separation efficiencies, namely distribution coefficients and separation factor, were affected by various process variables, including phase compositions of ATPS, concentrations of HP-β-CD and PSA enantiomers, pH value and operational temperature. Under the optimum conditions, separation factor could reach 1.42 after just one step extraction. This environmentally benign chiral separation technique opens up new possibilities for preparative separation of other racemic compounds at a large-scale.

Abstract:Helium is produced conventionally from cryogenic processes in conjunction with LNG/NRU units. However, cryogenic processes are expensive and energy demanding. Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) was investigated as a potential replacement for the cryogenic processes to enrich dilute He (1 vol%) downstream of the NRU. The feasibility of a PSA process utilizing zeolite 13X was studied by dynamic simulation of 3-bed 3-step, 3-bed 5-step and 4-bed 7-step PSA cycle schedules. The static equilibrium parameters and dynamic mass transfer coefficients were estimated experimentally and the model was validated using dynamic breakthrough curves and PSA cyclic tests. The validated model was used to study the effect of adding equalization steps on the PSA process performance of the 3-bed 3-step cycle. Adding one equalization step (3-bed 5-step) effectively improved both the purity and recovery, while adding two equalization steps (4-bed 7-step) increased the capital costs with only minor improvements in purity and recovery. The best PSA process performance was obtained from the 3-bed 5-step PSA cycle, wherein feeding 1 vol% He resulted in a He purity of 94.3% at 62.1% He recovery and a feed throughput of 746.4 L(STP)/(h kg).
