Reporting Activities of Chinese Correspondents in Japan from the 1960s and 1970s

Abstract:Based on the framework of factors of the news selection process, this research discusses the news production of the Chinese correspondents stationed in Japan in 1960s and 1970s . The framework distinguishes among four analytic levels: institutional context, organizational routine, individual consciousness and the external reporting environment. By analyzing the historical materials such as memoirs and notes of Chinese correspondents, this study found that Chinese correspondents in Japan determined the direction of reporting activities by following the central leaders’ instructions and the central government’s documents. They identified specific news stories by conforming organizational routines and reporting guidelines. Moreover , they wrote the news story by integrating journalistic professionalism and personal recognition and understanding towards Japan. At last, they have gained the convenience from the people who are friendly to new China, whereas they still meet restrictions in news gathering and reporting in Japan. The reporting activities of Chinese correspondents promoted the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Japan, which is in line with the needs of the foreign policy and the domestic policy of Chinese government in the early days of new China. The analysis offers a new perspective to summarize rules of international news production mechanism of Chinese media.

Abstract:We conclude that journalism is not an entirely mature profession.Journalism professionalism is being shaped.In fact,affected by culture,social system and personal education,Chinese journalists today are hard to be called a professional staff.Journalism education has not acquired enough dignity and high evaluation from journalists.Some people think there is a long distance between education and practice;others feel a lack of things to be compared with students in other professions.Talking with interviewees,we notice that there is a wrong idea that indicated journalism education is of no use.Some media even consider refusing students of journalism major.In our opinion,it does not match the international trend and is to some extend a denial of Chinese journalism education.We find benefits from professional journalism education as follows:Firstly,it can advance journalists' sense of responsibility;secondly,it can cultivate their professional ethics;thirdly,it can teach journalists advanced writing and management skills;fourthly,it can offer journalists wide a global outlook;fifthly,it can offer them a profound background of humanism and social sciences.There are some obvious problems in the Chinese journalism education.Firstly,training of professional skills has to be strengthened.The current training education cannot prepare students to handle the practical work in a short time.Secondly,the journalism education lacks hardware,which means that it is difficult for students to command the professional skills.Thirdly,education of theory and practice is somehow disjointed.In order to solve these problems,universities have to collaborate with the media,while the media can participate in journalism education,too.If allowed,universities can even cultivate journalists for the media with certain direction.

Abstract:The manuscript is devoted to identifying the types and political characteristics of ancient Chinese newspapers. The study of the history of journalism is an important part of the study of Chinese history and, at the same time, contributes to a clear understanding of modern processes. The scientific discourse discusses historical and cultural factors influencing the development of modern journalism. Meanwhile, studying the history of ancient Chinese journalism is no less important than studying modern journalism in a given country. The article analyzes the socio-political conditions of the birth of newspapers in ancient China, the activities of their publishers, the political goals and content of newspapers, the audience, and interaction with the ruling authorities. A comparative analysis of ancient Chinese official, private legal and illegal publications is given. The author analyzes scientific sources based on the principle of historicism, such general scientific methods as analysis, synthesis, deduction, induction. The main research methods are historical-genetic and historical typological.

Abstract:The birth of Chinese journalism and journalism history is inseparable from the so-called problem of modernity,namely the problem of "ancient and modern,Chinese and Western" in Chinese context.There are two ideas about the modernity and its discourse to date,one is the evolutionary idea from the traditional to the modern,including the liberalization path of "advancing to the world","in line with international practice" and "wholesale Westernization",and the revolutionization path of "national independence","national liberation" and People's freedom;the other is the culturalism idea from the civilization system to the modern system.Accordingly,it seems that the studies of journalism history can be categorized into different types.This paper makes a preliminary reflection and exploration on it,in the hope of secking after the internal logic of the Chinese journalism in the broad background of civilization.

Abstract:Modern press was introduced into China during the movement of bringing knowledge of West to China.Through investigating three types of newspaper which are missionary newspaper,Lin Zexu's translation newspaper and Shenbao,the author tries to reveal how did the knowledge embedded in newspaper transmit to China via these different channels.Missionaries used newspaper to transmit Western knowledge,bridge the gap between East and West and introduce the modern press at the same time.Lin Zexu discovered the Western newspaper by reviewing old Chinese official gazette and unintentionally opened the window to the world and showed the basic contour of newspaper to Chinese people.By its own presence,Shenbao distinguished itself from newspaper and official gazette by showing the political power of newspaper to the nation and offering direct contact with the newspaper.All these elements of knowledge constitute the basic standard and atmosphere for Chinese to understand and adopt the idea of modern press.

Abstract:Against the background of media and social transformation, this study examines Chinese press journalists' ethical orientation and tolerance for ethically controversial practices. The former captures journalists' theoretical conception of ethics along a consequentialist versus absolutist spectrum; the latter speaks to journalists' ethical judgment in relation to concrete practices. Analysis of a survey of press journalists (N = 2,109) found that a substantial minority of the respondents were subscribing to ethical relativism. Different types of controversial reporting practices were tolerated to different extents. Multivariate analysis shows that those working in online newsrooms, those who perceived substantial commercial influences on news work, and those who valued the advocacy role of the press exhibited a stronger relativistic orientation, whereas respondents who valued the information dissemination role of the press exhibited a stronger absolutist orientation. But there are mixed findings regarding the impact of other predictors, which hint at the complexities of the evolution of journalism ethics in China.

Abstract:Through analyzing the catalogues of history records such as the new and old Book of Tang,the description of the relationship between Xu Ling and Chen Shubao,Zhang Lihua in the Book of Chen and some other historical and literary works,and the habits of people addressing each other in the Southern Dynasties,this paper makes a further investigation on some remaining problems in discussion of the editor of Yutai Xinyong began in 2004.Thus the authors stress their point that Yutai Xinyong was impossibly edited by Xu Ling.

Abstract:Recently,we find almost nothing about real journalism and real history in the study on the history of Chinese journalism,including the history of journalism in the People's Republic of China.To meet the challenge of double -vanishment of journalism and history,it's necessary to put real journalism and real history back into the history of Chinese journalism.And the social history of journalism may be a better solution,which should be examined and improved in the concrete practice rather than on the paper.

Abstract:Based on what Xin Bin has discussed in his paper Reported Speech and the Dialogic Nature of News Texts published in Journal of Foreign Languages (No.4,July 2007),this paper suggests using Bakhtin's dialogic theory and Peter White's Intertextual Positioning Framework developed in Engagement subsystem under Appraisal System to analyse the relationship between reported speech and the dialogic nature of News Texts from four dimensions:(1)the different forms of reported speech;(2)the different sources of reported speech;(3)the relationship between reporter speech and reported speech;(4)the relationship among reported speeches. The paper further argues that such analysis aims to disclose the reporter's manipulation of language and propaganda of certain ideology.

Abstract:With the profound transformation of Chinese journalism under the commercialized trend of thoughts, there is a debate on whether Chinese journalists still maintain the public service ideal or just regard it simply as a job. In other words, is journalism a “vocation” or a “profession”? Therefore, it is necessary to conduct an empirical study on journalistic roles. Drawing on the self-determination theory, this study constructs a framework of “career motivation–news attitude” to build a bridge between role orientations and performance, in order to comprehensively understand the Chinese journalistic roles. In this study, a quota sampling survey ( n = 1000), multiple linear regression (MLR), and structural equation modeling (SEM) are used to examine the influence of advocacy and utilitarian motivations on news efficacy and news avoidance, corresponding to news production and consumption attitudes. Furthermore, the study divides the journalistic roles in China into four categories: purposive advocate professionals, dedicated advocate professionals, workaday journalists, and adrift journalists. The results show that advocacy motivation, or the public service ideal, is more significant than utilitarian motivation in the journalistic roles. The former is associated with higher news efficacy and lower news avoidance, while the latter is only associated with higher news avoidance. The study also discusses the demographic factors of journalistic career motivations.
