Abstract:Since reform and opening-up, Chinese media industry has undergone profound development. The forms of media have become more diversified. However, the increase in the amount of media is accom-panied with some problems, such as the erosion of independence due to business benefits, and the relatively low quality of employees in media industry. Therefore, readers are often confused about how to select reliable media. To address these issues, we need scientific research to provide us with guidance, and help us under-stand the information characteristics of media.As a combination of policy-oriented media and market-oriented media, Chinese media industry is unique for its dual-track feature. The policy-oriented media is supported by government finance in some way, and mainly focuses on government policy. In contrast, the market-oriented media is self-financing, and pays more attention to the information demands of capital market. Prior literature finds that media coverage can help im-prove the quality of corporate governance, and enlarge the information efficiency of capital market. But for in-vestors, they care more about how to select media or news articles to facilitate their decision making. In other words, they want to identify the very media or news article that has a substantial impact on the information in-tegration of capital market. Therefore, further research should take account of media types and characteristics of news articles, in order to figure out the functional distinction between different types of media.Based on the dual-track feature of Chinese media industry, this paper discusses the differences and reas-ons of performance in facilitating information integration of capital market between policy-oriented media and market-oriented media. By comparing the use of positive and negative words in news articles, we find that positive reports dominate in all media. But the proportion of positive reports is larger for policy-oriented me-dia than for market-oriented media, while the proportion of negative reports goes opposite. We also find that the proportion of positive reports gradually declines from 2000 to 2013, while that of negative reports gradu-ally increases, and the above trends are more significant in the market-oriented media. Given news articles are carriers of information, so the differences of news articles' features between two types of media must lead to different performances in disseminating information.Using Python programming language and Genius Finance News Database, we sort and analyze all the news articles related to the listed firms. Consequently, we construct a database of positive and negative media reports, which covers the period from 2003 to 2013, and consists of 137 unique media. With a sample from China A-share listed non-financial firms from 2003 to 2013, we find that the media coverage can improve the information efficiency of capital market through the channel of negative news rather than that of positive news. Moreover, the above effects are mainly driven by the policy-oriented media, while the market-oriented media barely shows no influence. To explore the mechanism behind those relationships, we quantify the depth of information discovery and the accuracy of information dissemination for each news article, using the meth-od of textual analysis. Further empirical evidences indicate that the policy-oriented media discovers informa-tion deeper and disseminates information more accurate than market-oriented media, and this is the reason why policy-oriented media performs better than market-oriented media in facilitating the information integration of capital market.Our results imply that negative news is more valuable for investors' decision-making. Especially, we find that the impact of media on information efficiency of capital market is mainly driven by the policy-oriented media, which is helpful for investors to narrow their scope of media selection. Meanwhile, our results can help regulatory authorities evaluate and select media platform, and assist them to provide media with guidance in respect of news content.Technically, using the method of textual analysis, we get a database of positive and negative vocabulary which is compatible with Chinese news reports. Based on the vocabulary database, we further analyze the news articles in Genius Finance News Database by Python programming language. Finally, we construct a database of positive and negative news reports, which covers the period from 2000 to 2013. Moreover, we em-ploy the model of Latent Dirichlet Allocation to measure the depth of information discovery and the accuracy of information dissemination, which helps us explore the reason why the policy-oriented media performs bet-ter than the market-oriented media in terms of improving information efficiency of capital market.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the media industry in China, fake news has become a severe problem. This paper identifies four types of fake news, with examples which include totally fake news, distorted fake news, fast news, and sensational journalism. The second part of the paper attempts to analyse the causes of fake news. The acceleration of the trend of media marketization, the loss of professional ethics by media practitioners, the influence of stakeholders, and the marketization of news value in university education, have all given rise to the emergence of fake news. The third part investigates the influence of fake news on society. Fake news can result in inappropriate policy making by the government. With the prevalence of fake news, public media literacy declines and social ethos becomes fickle. Finally, the paper attempts to explore possibly effective countermeasures, which involve establishing a fact-checking mechanism, calling for slow news instead of fast news, improving the public’s media literacy, and reforming the news paradigm, in order to resist fake news in future.

Abstract:The era of information has brought about a new "reading era" for news communication. Regardless of the type of news report, it is crucial to ensure the truthfulness of the news. The authenticity of news is the foundation for its existence and development. However, due to the entertainment-oriented nature of online media, some companies that profit from internet traffic take advantage of the general phenomenon of most users' lack of attention and irrationality on the internet platform. This phenomenon has been observed for many years and has repeatedly misled the masses, affecting their daily lives. This article analyzes the current problem using a questionnaire consisting of 14 questions. Nine of these questions are AI-generated fake news, while the remaining five are based on news headlines that caused panic in the past two years. This article focuses on the impact of inappropriate news headlines on people's confusion and daily lives. The results indicate that news about daily life significantly impacts people, regardless of their age or reading range.

Abstract:Based on what Xin Bin has discussed in his paper Reported Speech and the Dialogic Nature of News Texts published in Journal of Foreign Languages (No.4,July 2007),this paper suggests using Bakhtin's dialogic theory and Peter White's Intertextual Positioning Framework developed in Engagement subsystem under Appraisal System to analyse the relationship between reported speech and the dialogic nature of News Texts from four dimensions:(1)the different forms of reported speech;(2)the different sources of reported speech;(3)the relationship between reporter speech and reported speech;(4)the relationship among reported speeches. The paper further argues that such analysis aims to disclose the reporter's manipulation of language and propaganda of certain ideology.

Abstract:Abstract Background How to realize the authenticity of news depends on the social environment and the authenticity of news practice. Only by understanding the public's acceptance psychology and the motivation and way of participating in news activities, can we better clarify these problems, including the organic nature of news reality and how to reach an organic agreement on news reality. This paper attempts to reveal how the theory of organic news truth is realized in the current Chinese news practice. The anxiety caused by news is analyzed. Research Objects and Methods Using the method of research integration, this paper analyzes the relevant literature of news reality. This paper selects 51 papers on news authenticity from CNKI, classifies them according to authentic discourse, and makes a horizontal comparison. The purpose of this study is to analyze the differences of research hypotheses. Then, we take the news practice of Wuhan Red Cross Society during the 2019 coronavirus disease as a sample for analysis, use the keyword “Wuhan Red Cross Society” to search the texts published on microblog, wechat and Baidu from January 20 to March 1, 2020, and track them to ensure their authenticity. Take 300 news, netizen comments and posts as the analysis object; Streamline it into 37 thematic activities; These original articles and their disseminators are listed in chronological order, and then cross compared; By analyzing the communication timing and information flow of different subjects and comparing the attribute framework between texts to describe the realization process of the concept of organic truth, we can find out what kind of news truth is described by different communicators. In order to investigate people's response to events, a coping style scale was developed. By consulting relevant literature, forming an open-ended questionnaire, sorting out the recovered effective scale, analyzing the data semantics, and compiling the initial measurement table of stress coping style on the basis of previous theoretical concepts; Secondly, according to the items of the scale, the preliminary test is carried out, and the data are analyzed by item analysis, exploratory factor analysis and reliability test; Finally, form a formal scale, test and restore the formal scale, and conduct confirmatory factor analysis and reliability and validity test. Results The study found that many subjects had different concerns about Wuhan red cross news. Some concerns were not reported as news at first, but expressed in the form of questions or angry posts; When their concerns gain momentum on social media in the form of posts, they force the news media to report their concerns; In social media, news text becomes the medium of dialogue between different subjects. With the deepening of the dialogue, the real picture of the news becomes more and more vivid. The results showed that the improvement of comprehension information index was positively correlated with the regulation of depression. The more depressive symptoms, the less cognitive reappraisal, and the more cognitive immersion, expression inhibition and expression catharsis were used; When regulating positive emotions, adolescents had more depressive symptoms, less use of cognitive reappraisal, more use of cognitive immersion and expression inhibition, but there was no significant difference in the use of expression catharsis. The results show that emotional titer can affect the strategy use of adolescents with different depressive symptoms, and the impact of emotional titer on different strategies is different. The analysis found that compared with cognitive reappraisal and cognitive immersion, adolescents with different depressive symptoms were more likely to be affected by emotional titer. Conclusion This paper holds that through technical authorization, multiple subjects have obtained the technical conditions to participate in news production. The news readers not only explore the truth and supplement the new psychological problems in the news, but also promote them to actively explore and supplement the truth in the news text, so as to keep the new narrative structure. This paper does not fully discuss the regulatory means of multi-agent news behavior. At the same time, the media should strengthen the positive cognitive education of the masses. Whether and how to let multiple subjects jointly discover and disseminate the truth, rather than fabricating and distorting the truth for their own special purposes, needs further discussion. Abstract:Traditional media are facing a crisis of declining trust, public disengagement, and declining revenue. More and more people are avoiding and rejecting traditional news because of its depressing effect on their feelings. The constructive journalism movement seeks to correct the negative bias of traditional journalism, strengthen the connection between the media industry and its audience, and reestablish the authority and legitimacy of journalism. This new model of journalism can give hope to a life that is "not-yet" and encourage people to move forward to solve social problems with a positive mindset. In the current era of public communications, constructive journalism offers a new option for people to rethink the many possibilities for journalists, the news communication system, and the journalism industry and thus shape their own social roles and positioning.

Abstract:The concept of truth is at the core of science, journalism, law, and many other pillars of modern society. Yet, given the imprecision of natural language, deciding what information should count as true is no easy task, even with access to the ground truth. How do people decide whether a given claim of fact qualifies as true or false? Across two studies (N = 1181; 16,248 observations), participants saw claims of fact alongside the ground truth about those claims. Participants classified each claim as true or false. Although participants knew precisely how accurate the claims were, participants classified claims as false more often when they judged the information source to be intending to deceive (versus inform) their audience, and classified claims as true more often when they judged the information source to be intending to provide an approximate (versus precise) account. These results suggest that, even if people have access to the same set of facts, they might disagree about the truth of claims if they attribute discrepant intentions to information sources. Such findings may shed light on the robust and persistent disagreements over claims of fact that have arisen in the "post-truth era".

Search, Examine and Early-Termination: Fake News Detection with Annotation-Free Evidences

Abstract:Pioneer researches recognize evidences as crucial elements in fake news detection apart from patterns. Existing evidence-aware methods either require laborious pre-processing procedures to assure relevant and high-quality evidence data, or incorporate the entire spectrum of available evidences in all news cases, regardless of the quality and quantity of the retrieved data. In this paper, we propose an approach named \textbf{SEE} that retrieves useful information from web-searched annotation-free evidences with an early-termination mechanism. The proposed SEE is constructed by three main phases: \textbf{S}earching online materials using the news as a query and directly using their titles as evidences without any annotating or filtering procedure, sequentially \textbf{E}xamining the news alongside with each piece of evidence via attention mechanisms to produce new hidden states with retrieved information, and allowing \textbf{E}arly-termination within the examining loop by assessing whether there is adequate confidence for producing a correct prediction. We have conducted extensive experiments on datasets with unprocessed evidences, i.e., Weibo21, GossipCop, and pre-processed evidences, namely Snopes and PolitiFact. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches.

Measuring Falseness in News Articles based on Concealment and Overstatement

Abstract:This research investigates the extent of misinformation in certain journalistic articles by introducing a novel measurement tool to assess the degrees of falsity. It aims to measure misinformation using two metrics (concealment and overstatement) to explore how information is interpreted as false. This should help examine how articles containing partly true and partly false information can potentially harm readers, as they are more challenging to identify than completely fabricated information. In this study, the full story provided by the fact-checking website serves as a standardized source of information for comparing differences between fake and real news. The result suggests that false news has greater concealment and overstatement, due to longer and more complex new stories being shortened and ambiguously phrased. While there are no major distinctions among categories of politics science and civics, it demonstrates that misinformation lacks crucial details while simultaneously containing more redundant words. Hence, news articles containing partial falsity, categorized as misinformation, can deceive inattentive readers who lack background knowledge. Hopefully, this approach instigates future fact-checkers, journalists, and the readers to secure high quality articles for a resilient information environment.

Abstract:Misinformation posting and spreading in Social Media is ignited by personal decisions on the truthfulness of news that may cause wide and deep cascades at a large scale in a fraction of minutes. When individuals are exposed to information, they usually take a few seconds to decide if the content (or the source) is reliable, and eventually to share it. Although the opportunity to verify the rumour is often just one click away, many users fail to make a correct evaluation. We studied this phenomenon with a web-based questionnaire that was compiled by 7,298 different volunteers, where the participants were asked to mark 20 news as true or false. Interestingly, false news is correctly identified more frequently than true news, but showing the full article instead of just the title, surprisingly, does not increase general accuracy. Also, displaying the original source of the news may contribute to mislead the user in some cases, while a genuine wisdom of the crowd can positively assist individuals' ability to classify correctly. Finally, participants whose browsing activity suggests a parallel fact-checking activity, show better performance and declare themselves as young adults. This work highlights a series of pitfalls that can influence human annotators when building false news datasets, which in turn fuel the research on the automated fake news detection; furthermore, these findings challenge the common rationale of AI that suggest users to read the full article before re-sharing.

Abstract:Evidentiality is a significant feature of Text.The thesis attempts to analyse the evidential feature of Chinese news text and English news text at the textual level from the typological perspective,based on the 1000 texts distinctively in Guangming Daily and Washington Post,two main stream media in China and America.The conclusion is there is far more universalities than differences as for evidentialitiy in Chinese news text and English news text.What's more,there are more news Chinese texts with comments than their English equivalents,and evidently,the former contains more evidentials of assumption,reliability and anticipation.

Abstract:Social cognition is concerned with the subjective interpretation of linguistic signs in a social context.To bridge the gap between signs and society,this paper attempts to present a socio-cognitive discourse analytic framework for studying the cognitive aspects of discourse in a historical and socio-cultural context.The framework is used to contrast the evidential strategies of two news stories with an identical topic,published respectively by China Daily and The New York Times.The result of the analysis proves the practicability and validity of the framework,and shows that the journalists employ socio-centric evidentials that emphasize certain information and sources to elicit the target audience's subjective social schemata and collective memory,leading the latter to generate the social inferences the former has intended.Ideology influences journalists and news agencies in their choice,interpretation,and expression of the news.

Abstract:China's Livelihood TV news and US public news have some superficial and topical relation,but each is facing totally different pressure: public news is subjected to excess commercialization as well as the loss of news commonality,while livelihood news is under the pressure of insufficient commercialization,excess propaganda and the loss of news nature.Moreover,different social systems result in different trend of the two journalistic movements.Livelihood news relies on the rise of Chinese people's consciousness of citizenship whereas public news is based on communitarianism and advisory politics.Despite the slim chance that Chinese livelihood news grows into American-style public news,the livelihood news in transition can draw inspiration from the latter's journalistic ideas and practice.
