Abstract:The rise of oral history is a new trend in historical studies in China that began in the late twentieth century. This promising tendency has so far achieved important results in two areas: theoretical exploration and oral interviews. This article proposes the theory of oral history’s four realities and three curtains and by so doing preliminarily clarifies the relations among historical memories, historical narratives, and the authenticity of oral history. These theories represent the current understanding of the discipline of contemporary Chinese history in regard to the core questions of oral history. Oral history in China has currently reached a new phase of self-conscious disciplinary construction and has the following tentative plans: to strengthen the study of basic theories and methods of oral history; to intensify the training of talented scholars and to establish a professional group of oral historians; to promote the general implementation of oral history projects; to create new oral history websites and academic journals, and to prepare for the establishment of oral history archives in China.

Abstract:In the past twenty years scholars have engaged with exploring the function and process of historical narrative-making in increasingly popular forms such as film history, public history, material culture, art history, landscape history and living history. With regard to oral history, however, the relevance of postmodernist approaches has been remarkably neglected. This paper argues that oral history is a highly distinctive example of historical narrative-making, created by ‘ordinary’ people and contextualised by the professional historian, providing us with a fascinating alternative to constructing and imagining ‘histories’ beyond more conventionally understood ‘texts’. Specifically, I endorse the value of deconstructing and analysing subjectivities that determine narrative construction in and of oral history (This article is drawn from a BA dissertation entitled, ‘History is the work of a thousand different hands’: a study of the value of oral history, incorporating a case study of the socio-cultural histories of men and women’s home front experiences in West Sussex 1939–1945, submitted in May 2015. The testimonies drawn upon in this paper were originally collected for the purpose of the BA dissertation. Full written permission was obtained from all interviewee’s to use and quote from their testimonies. Where individuals have requested to be anonymous, an alternative name has been used.). Treating individual testimonies as mediated cultural processes rather than ‘direct’ experience, the process – rather than the product – of oral history, suggests the need to accept and understand the nature of the narrativisation of the past as history.

More and more people are avoiding and rejecting traditional news because of its depressing effect on their feelings. The constructive journalism movement seeks to correct the negative bias of traditional journalism, strengthen the connection between the media industry and its audience, and reestablish the authority and legitimacy of journalism. This new model of journalism can give hope to a life that is "not-yet" and encourage people to move forward to solve social problems with a positive mindset. In the current era of public communications, constructive journalism offers a new option for people to rethink the many possibilities for journalists, the news communication system, and the journalism industry and thus shape their own social roles and positioning.

Abstract:This article discusses the development of oral history in the United States and how this has led the field to becoming interdisciplinary in interesting and useful ways. It traces its origins in the 17 th century and explains its establishment as method (oral data collection), a subfield of history (oral historiography) and a resource for teachers, communities, and researchers of all kinds (oral history). The author describes the practical applications of oral history in other fields such as anthropology, education/ teaching, ethnic studies/ethnohistory/American studies, folklore, gerontology, legal studies, literary history, media studies and media production, and women and gender studies. A review of oral history guides is also given. The article ends with an update on how oral historians are coping with the new, anti-intellectual orientation of President Trump and his right-wing agenda. Keywords: Oral History. USA. Abstract:This paper applies discourse knowledge to the segmentation of speech transcripts. The paper reviews literature on discourse structure, as well as approaches used in text segmentation and speech segmentation, identifies what features are used and how the features are combined in these approaches. After reviewing the literature, a three-part study is conducted to answer the following three research questions: • Are discourse-markers indicators of segment boundaries in oral history interviews? • Are questions good indicators of segment boundaries? Could questions be used as segment boundary or segment continuation indicators? • Do the discourse structures proposed by Labov and Waletzky (1967, 1997) and Stein and Glenn (1979) hold for oral history interviews? How could this knowledge be used in automatic segmentation? Methodology, results and analysis of each part of the study are described. Major findings include trends in segmentation and answers to these questions. Limitation of the study is discussed. Abstract:The birth of Chinese journalism and journalism history is inseparable from the so-called problem of modernity,namely the problem of "ancient and modern,Chinese and Western" in Chinese context.There are two ideas about the modernity and its discourse to date,one is the evolutionary idea from the traditional to the modern,including the liberalization path of "advancing to the world","in line with international practice" and "wholesale Westernization",and the revolutionization path of "national independence","national liberation" and People's freedom;the other is the culturalism idea from the civilization system to the modern system.Accordingly,it seems that the studies of journalism history can be categorized into different types.This paper makes a preliminary reflection and exploration on it,in the hope of secking after the internal logic of the Chinese journalism in the broad background of civilization.

Abstract:To explain broader social phenomena through human perspectives, sociologists closely analyse their qualitative data. As individuals’ actions and embeddedness into society may be subject to inquiry, biographical and narrative approaches can enable access to the other’s world, its social and material contexts. Yet sensitivity is seldom evident when communicating research findings. Traditionally researchers address a uniform, neutral academic readership, one at odds with current reality. Just as the researcher seeks to understand the interviewee, similar effort is needed to accommodate the reader. Good communication needs to consider complexity and address the human experience through multi-faceted but meaningful lenses. It requires creative thinking. I suggest that New Journalism and Portraiture, in combination, provide a good starting point for communicating the human experience and its surrounding conditions: New Journalism as it introduces devices from fiction into the field; Portraiture because it encourages the writer to bring creative aspects into the text. The article explores the considerations around writing up such a text from biographical research and demonstrates how this can be done.

Abstract:This book explores how fieldwork has been used to research Chinese history in the past and new ways that others might use it in the future. It introduces the previous generations of scholars who ventured out of the archive to conduct local investigations in Chinese cities, villages, farms and temples. It goes on to present the techniques of historical fieldwork, providing guidance on how to integrate oral history into research plans and archival research, conduct interviews, and locate sources in the field. Abstract:Advances in text mining and natural language processing methodologies have the potential to productively inform historical archaeology and oral history research. However, text mining methods are largely developed in the context of contemporary big data and publicly available texts, limiting the applicability of these tools in the context of historical and archaeological interpretation. Given the ability of text analysis to efficiently process and analyze large volumes of data, the potential for such tools to meaningfully inform historical archaeological research is significant, particularly for working with digitized data repositories or lengthy texts. Using oral histories recorded about a half-century ago from the anthracite coal mining region of Pennsylvania, USA, we discuss recent methodological developments in text analysis methodologies. We suggest future pathways to bridge the gap between generalized text mining methods and the particular needs of working with historical and place-based texts.

For the uptake of digital research tools in the daily working practice of researchers, practices and conventions commonly adhered to in the subfields in the humanities should be taken into account during development. To this end, in the Oral History Today project a research tool for exploring Oral History collections is developed in close collaboration with scholarly researchers. This paper describes four stages of scholarly research and the first steps undertaken to incorporate requirements of these stages in a digital research environment.

Narrative, Biography, Prosopography and the Sport Historian: Historical Method and its Implications

Abstract:Historical research is a widely debated topic as historical knowledge is continually evolving and there is no definable recorded structure. The interpretational nature of the discipline highlights the tensions between ‘fact based’ analysis and the ‘fictional’ viewpoint which is at the heart of social science investigation. Contemporary narrative and biographical study has gained acclaim from a generation of academics who demonstrate the balance between empiricism and postmodernity by utilising facts to construct an accurate representation of the past, but, are sympathetic to the use of imagination within the discipline in order to extract the ‘narrative truth’. Biography has long been a respected source for historical inquiry, however, collective biography, or prosopography; the study of connections between individuals; has been judged as a lesser instrument due to its ambiguous nature and lack of socio-historic use. This paper will challenge deep-rooted views by discussing the influence of technological advancement on biographical exploration whilst considering the emerging phenomena of ‘collective biography’ and its implications within historical research.

Abstract:Research access to mainland China, once severely circumscribed, has expanded tremendously during the post-Mao reform period, with important implications for the study of Chinese mass communication. Fieldwork possibilities mean that scholars are privy to a great deal more of the media circuit – not only to voluminous content that can be systematically sampled, but also to structures, contexts, practices, processes, places, and people involved in production and reception. Drawing on experiences in the field, this article discusses challenges and rewards of studying Chinese journalism from within.

Abstract:Computational technologies have revolutionized the archival sciences field, prompting new approaches to process the extensive data in these collections. Automatic speech recognition and natural language processing create unique possibilities for analysis of oral history (OH) interviews, where otherwise the transcription and analysis of the full recording would be too time consuming. However, many oral historians note the loss of aural information when converting the speech into text, pointing out the relevance of subjective cues for a full understanding of the interviewee narrative. In this article, we explore various computational technologies for social signal processing and their potential application space in OH archives, as well as neighboring domains where qualitative studies is a frequently used method. We also highlight the latest developments in key technologies for multimedia archiving practices such as natural language processing and automatic speech recognition. We discuss the analysis of both visual (body language and facial expressions), and non-visual cues (paralinguistics, breathing, and heart rate), stating the specific challenges introduced by the characteristics of OH collections. We argue that applying social signal processing to OH archives will have a wider influence than solely OH practices, bringing benefits for various fields from humanities to computer sciences, as well as to archival sciences. Looking at human emotions and somatic reactions on extensive interview collections would give scholars from multiple fields the opportunity to focus on feelings, mood, culture, and subjective experiences expressed in these interviews on a larger scale.

Abstract:We conclude that journalism is not an entirely mature profession.Journalism professionalism is being shaped.In fact,affected by culture,social system and personal education,Chinese journalists today are hard to be called a professional staff.Journalism education has not acquired enough dignity and high evaluation from journalists.Some people think there is a long distance between education and practice;others feel a lack of things to be compared with students in other professions.Talking with interviewees,we notice that there is a wrong idea that indicated journalism education is of no use.Some media even consider refusing students of journalism major.In our opinion,it does not match the international trend and is to some extend a denial of Chinese journalism education.We find benefits from professional journalism education as follows:Firstly,it can advance journalists' sense of responsibility;secondly,it can cultivate their professional ethics;thirdly,it can teach journalists advanced writing and management skills;fourthly,it can offer journalists wide a global outlook;fifthly,it can offer them a profound background of humanism and social sciences.There are some obvious problems in the Chinese journalism education.Firstly,training of professional skills has to be strengthened.The current training education cannot prepare students to handle the practical work in a short time.Secondly,the journalism education lacks hardware,which means that it is difficult for students to command the professional skills.Thirdly,education of theory and practice is somehow disjointed.In order to solve these problems,universities have to collaborate with the media,while the media can participate in journalism education,too.If allowed,universities can even cultivate journalists for the media with certain direction.

Abstract:Nowadays,new technologies are reinventing journalism,the study of journalism in China is facing structural difficulties,cognitive changes,and practical confusion.In the face of the complex social network interwoven with people and things,the journalism theory driven by the logic of"thingology"no longer has explanatory power,and there is an urgent need for a new perspective to re-understand the material,emotional,and relational changes occurring in Journalism.Therefore,this article introduces the theory of"social world"from the perspective of materialist phenomenology,following the principles of"interactional practices in context","relational forms",and"construction of order".By revisiting the topics of Chinese journalism research in 2023,the study tries to respond to how journalism theories and organizational and propaganda practices in the digital era should be carried out under the orientation of humanism.Finally,the paper puts forward a perspective towards"News-World",which is both to understand journalism's role in the social world and to understand the social world we live in through journalistic practices.
