Abstract:In 2016, Davis and Zhang surveyed 71 Chinese engineers to investigate the claim that the concept of "profession" may have a far wider range than the term. They concluded that China seems to have a profession of engineering (as Davis has long defined "profession") even though the Chinese still lacked an exact translation of the English term. In part, the survey reported here simply continues the work of Davis and Zhang. It confirms their result using a much larger, better educated, demographically different pool of 229 Chinese engineers. But, in part too, it does something else. It investigates the concept professional competence-the perceived knowledge, skill, and judgment that those surveyed attribute to themselves and other engineers. The article has four parts. The first part describes the basics of the survey (who was interviewed, how, when, and so on). The second part describes some important features of the survey's questions, explaining how the questions closely track both the concept of profession and the concept of professional competence. The third part reports and interprets the results relevant to the presence or absence of the concepts of profession and professional competence. The fourth part reports the conclusions.

Abstract:We conclude that journalism is not an entirely mature profession.Journalism professionalism is being shaped.In fact,affected by culture,social system and personal education,Chinese journalists today are hard to be called a professional staff.Journalism education has not acquired enough dignity and high evaluation from journalists.Some people think there is a long distance between education and practice;others feel a lack of things to be compared with students in other professions.Talking with interviewees,we notice that there is a wrong idea that indicated journalism education is of no use.Some media even consider refusing students of journalism major.In our opinion,it does not match the international trend and is to some extend a denial of Chinese journalism education.We find benefits from professional journalism education as follows:Firstly,it can advance journalists' sense of responsibility;secondly,it can cultivate their professional ethics;thirdly,it can teach journalists advanced writing and management skills;fourthly,it can offer journalists wide a global outlook;fifthly,it can offer them a profound background of humanism and social sciences.There are some obvious problems in the Chinese journalism education.Firstly,training of professional skills has to be strengthened.The current training education cannot prepare students to handle the practical work in a short time.Secondly,the journalism education lacks hardware,which means that it is difficult for students to command the professional skills.Thirdly,education of theory and practice is somehow disjointed.In order to solve these problems,universities have to collaborate with the media,while the media can participate in journalism education,too.If allowed,universities can even cultivate journalists for the media with certain direction.
Is Journalism Just a Job? Findings on Journalists’ Career Motivation, News Efficacy and News Avoidance from Structural Equation Modeling in China

Abstract:With the profound transformation of Chinese journalism under the commercialized trend of thoughts, there is a debate on whether Chinese journalists still maintain the public service ideal or just regard it simply as a job. In other words, is journalism a “vocation” or a “profession”? Therefore, it is necessary to conduct an empirical study on journalistic roles. Drawing on the self-determination theory, this study constructs a framework of “career motivation–news attitude” to build a bridge between role orientations and performance, in order to comprehensively understand the Chinese journalistic roles. In this study, a quota sampling survey ( n = 1000), multiple linear regression (MLR), and structural equation modeling (SEM) are used to examine the influence of advocacy and utilitarian motivations on news efficacy and news avoidance, corresponding to news production and consumption attitudes. Furthermore, the study divides the journalistic roles in China into four categories: purposive advocate professionals, dedicated advocate professionals, workaday journalists, and adrift journalists. The results show that advocacy motivation, or the public service ideal, is more significant than utilitarian motivation in the journalistic roles. The former is associated with higher news efficacy and lower news avoidance, while the latter is only associated with higher news avoidance. The study also discusses the demographic factors of journalistic career motivations.

Abstract:Traditional media are facing a crisis of declining trust, public disengagement, and declining revenue. More and more people are avoiding and rejecting traditional news because of its depressing effect on their feelings. The constructive journalism movement seeks to correct the negative bias of traditional journalism, strengthen the connection between the media industry and its audience, and reestablish the authority and legitimacy of journalism. This new model of journalism can give hope to a life that is "not-yet" and encourage people to move forward to solve social problems with a positive mindset. In the current era of public communications, constructive journalism offers a new option for people to rethink the many possibilities for journalists, the news communication system, and the journalism industry and thus shape their own social roles and positioning.

Abstract:As a consciously vocational standard and restraint of journalists, journalism ethic is an indispensable connotation to journalistic professionalism. From the point of vocational sociology, the vocational ethic is a recognizable internal norm of professional paradigm, as well as a self-discipline of professional organization. Through the studies and analysis on the following four referred contents, including the extent of acceptance on various ways of interviewing and writing news, evaluation on the importance of the factors forming journalism ethic, the extent of approval to behavior of some journalists and the evaluation on the importance of the factors influencing journalists' career pursuits, we've found out that in our country journalistic professionalism is coming into being among the journalists, however, it is not as good as we wish.
Welfare, Wellness, And Job Satisfaction Of Chinese Physicians: A National Survey Of Public Tertiary Hospitals In China

Abstract:Little national data are available on Chinese physicians' welfare, wellness, and job satisfaction. We conducted a self-administered smartphone-based national survey in early 2016 of 17 945 physicians from 136 tertiary hospitals across 31 provinces in China. In addition to collecting the physicians' basic information, we also measured 5 domains (the ethical and working environments, welfare, wellness, and job satisfaction). Half of the physicians reported a hospital-based annual income of less than RMB 72 000 ($10 300), and 60.31% of them did not think that the current medical pricing system reflects physicians' value. More than half (58.64%) of them did not have or did not know about medical malpractice insurance. These physicians worked long hours (an average of 10 h) and slept short hours (average 6 h). Only 35.78% of them thought that they were in good health, and 51.03% were in good mental health. Approximately, a quarter of them had helped to pay medical bills for patients who could not afford care, and 1 in 7 has been penalised for seeing patients who generated bad debts. Only 33.42% of them thought that their occupation receives social recognition and respect, and 70.98% would not encourage their children to pursue a medical career. The top 3 factors that may influence physician job satisfaction as chosen by the physicians were as follows: (1) the income distribution policy (45.92%), (2) working environment safety (25.86%), and (3) public trust and respect for their job (16.10%). In conclusion, we found that Chinese physicians bear heavy physical, mental, and financial stress, and many of them lack confidence that they receive trust and respect from society.

Abstract:Against the background of media and social transformation, this study examines Chinese press journalists' ethical orientation and tolerance for ethically controversial practices. The former captures journalists' theoretical conception of ethics along a consequentialist versus absolutist spectrum; the latter speaks to journalists' ethical judgment in relation to concrete practices. Analysis of a survey of press journalists (N = 2,109) found that a substantial minority of the respondents were subscribing to ethical relativism. Different types of controversial reporting practices were tolerated to different extents. Multivariate analysis shows that those working in online newsrooms, those who perceived substantial commercial influences on news work, and those who valued the advocacy role of the press exhibited a stronger relativistic orientation, whereas respondents who valued the information dissemination role of the press exhibited a stronger absolutist orientation. But there are mixed findings regarding the impact of other predictors, which hint at the complexities of the evolution of journalism ethics in China.

Abstract:AIMS:This study aimed to evaluate the health-related quality of life of nursing workers and influential factors.BACKGROUND:Nursing workers are under great occupational stress. However, few population-level studies of nursing workers' health conditions have been reported from China.DESIGN:This was a cross-sectional study conducted in 12 medical institutions in east China between January and March 2015.METHODS:Social-demographic information, nursing workers' work-related information and health-related quality of life using the Chinese (mainland) version of the Short Form 36 health survey were collected by a self-administrated questionnaire.RESULTS:Nursing workers reported significantly lower scores of the vitality, mental health dimensions, and mental component summary of the Short Form 36 survey compared with general population reference values. They scored significantly higher for five other dimensions and comparably for the physical role dimension. Pre-job training, families' positive attitudes to their job, and good relationships with clients were positively related with nursing workers' mental well-being.CONCLUSION:To promote nursing workers' mental health, compulsory work-related training, voluntary psychological counselling, and targeted legislation are needed.
Health System Reforms, Violence Against Doctors and Job Satisfaction in the Medical Profession: a Cross-Sectional Survey in Zhejiang Province, Eastern China

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To explore the factors influencing doctors' job satisfaction and morale in China, in the context of the ongoing health system reforms and the deteriorating doctor-patient relationship.DESIGN:Cross-sectional survey using self-completion questionnaires.STUDY SETTING:The survey was conducted from March to May 2012 among doctors at the provincial, county and primary care levels in Zhejiang Province, China.RESULTS:The questionnaire was completed by 202 doctors. Factors which contributed most to low job satisfaction were low income and long working hours. Provincial level doctors were most dissatisfied while primary care doctors were the least dissatisfied. Three per cent of doctors at high-level hospitals and 27% of those in primary care were satisfied with the salary. Only 7% at high-level hospitals were satisfied with the work hours, compared to 43% in primary care. Less than 10% at high levels were satisfied with the amount of paid vacation time (3%) and paid sick leave (5%), compared with 38% and 41%, respectively, in primary care. Overall, 87% reported that patients were more likely to sue and that patient violence against doctors was increasing. Only 4.5% wanted their children to be doctors. Of those 125 who provided a reason, 34% said poor pay, 17% said it was a high-risk profession, and 9% expressed concerns about personal insecurity or patient violence.CONCLUSIONS:Doctors have low job satisfaction overall. Recruitment and retention of doctors have become major challenges for the Chinese health system. Measures must be taken to address this, in order to ensure recruitment and retention of doctors in the future. These measures must first include reduction of doctors' workload, especially at provincial hospitals, partly through incentivisation of appropriate utilisation of primary care, increase in doctors' salary and more effective measures to tackle patient violence against doctors.

Abstract:According to a survey, the moral tradition of "taking responsibility for the world" still serves as the fundamental shadow of individual value system for those professional journalists in Shanghai where the interior economy is extremely active but no much can be said about the opinion's supervision. For most professional journalists, the option for such a job might be in a great part attributed to their lofty hope for the social responsibility in morals to be taken by mass communication media and the amateur hobby or interest they have. As to the pursuit for fame and money, it is apparently not the primary factor to choose this job. This is just the significant foundation of thought for the reporters to become a professional individual and play their role in opinion supervision with mass media.

Abstract:Uphold the professional journalism has been widely recognized as a key solution of the journalism ethic issues in China in resent years and the core of the professional journalism is the objective reporting.This paper,however,challenges the journalistic claim of abso- lute objectivity and asserts that from the linguistic point of view,journalistic works is cov- ered by the language system and is naturally social constructed and shows some extents of arbitrary.Journalistic discourse,like any other discourse,does not represent the pure fact.Journalistic narrations involve many literary elements such as plot-making,sus- pense and the language choices,showing the reporter's subjectivity.Thus,the concept of professionalism can not be just viewed as an absolute objectivity,instead,it should be treated as a relative journalism term.
The Vocation Loyalty of Media Staff

Abstract:The modern media is facing stronger competition challenges.The key factor that determines who will become the best is whether the media possesses a top-ranking staff.The level of loyalty which the staff practices to the working unit is decided by the combined effects of personal and corporate characters and the environment.Researches on the media staff in the mainland find that senior staff members with advanced titles,higher positions,longer working history and higher income are more willing to go on working for that media.On the contrary,younger staff members with lower titles,lower positions,shorter working history and lower income tend to have lower loyalty to the working unit.In general,a large part of the media staff has comparatively high vocation loyalty.The research also indicates that the media staff is most satisfied with the relationship among colleagues,followed by leadership,flexibility,social effect,opportunity of innovation and accomplishment,while independence,studying opportunity,income,welfare and promotion opportunity follow behind.It is predicated that,in order to enhance the vocation loyalty of the media staff,the working units have to offer the staff more opportunities for studying and training,to implement the promotion system inside the organization,to build a reasonable income system,to construct a proper management style and a channel for efficient communication,to assure the employment security for the staff,to create a group consciousness in the organization,to link the staff and the working units more closely,to strengthen the enterprise spirit,and to establish a value standard of ″the human is above all.″ All these are efficient ways to enhance the vocation loyalty of the staff.The working units will have to take precautions to prevent hiring incompetent staff.They can practice active inspection management.To cultivate and maintain vocation loyalty of the media staff is a systematical project.Efficient ways to solve the problems should focus on three tasks,including the employment,the use and the inspection management of the staff.

Abstract:Based on the 2311 questionnaires,the findings indicted: the labor union functions included 6 dimensions;each dimensions of labor union functions(LUF) differed among the expected fulfillment degrees,actual fulfillment degrees and the fulfillment actualization rates,moreover changed by employees’s satisfaction(ES);closed relationship between LUF and ES existed.The impacts of actual fulfillment degrees of LUF were much higher than the variables of the firm size and total production value.Within the LUF,the functions of labor mediation,competency promotion and decision participation were much more significant.

Abstract:Objective To analyze current nursing workplace.Methods Questionnaires were distributed to 565 nurses,the response rate was 73.8%,417 nurses completed the Q12 scale which consists of four dimensions:basic needs,teamwork,self-development and supervisor's support.Data collected were analyzed by SPSS.Results Highest scores were reported for basic needs and lowest for supervisor's support.Significant correlation between marital status and teamwork was found while moderate correlation between ages and basic needs,ages and teamwork.The four dimensions had non-significant correlation with ducation level,job title and nursing unit.Conclusion On the base of meeting the nurses' basic needs,further improve the nursing administration,pay attention to the nurses' individual differences,optimize the nurses' occupational environment.

Abstract:Based on the journal co-citation analysis,this exploratory research aims at figuring out the network of Chinese journals in the field of journalism & communication.By statistical analysis,we find:(1)The journals are divided into two main branches:journals of journalism & communication and journals of editing & publishing.(2)Within journals of journalism & communication,except TV Research and China Radio & TV Academic Journal,there are mainly two sub-groups: research-oriented journals and industry-oriented journals.(3)Within journals of editing & publishing,except Reading and China Book Review,the others are classified into three sub-groups: journals of scientific editing & publishing,journals focusing on publishing,and journals focusing on editing.
The Hierarchy of Influences on Professional Role Perceptions among Chinese Online Journalists

Abstract:This research seeks to understand the journalistic profession in contemporary China, given the growth of online journalism, the transformation of the media system, and the emergence of transnational journalism culture. Based on a nationwide sample of 1751 full-time online journalists from 205 online news organizations in 31 provincial level units and other aggregate-level data from secondary sources, the study applies Shoemaker and Reese's Hierarchical Model to examine the factors that drive the formation of professional role perceptions among Chinese online journalists. The final results of hierarchical linear models provide evidence for the significant influences of individual level, routine level, and organizational level factors. However, social institutional-level and social system-level factors are not significant predictors of professional role perceptions.

Abstract:Objective To describe the status and discrepancy of job satisfaction of health workers in different institutions.Methods Structure questionnaire survey,the sample include total health institutions,hospital and community health service centers in one district in Shanghai.Sampling method was systematic which occupies 20% in whole.1 047 persons,937 questionnaires was retrieved,and the collecting rate was 89.5%.Content of survey contains interpersonal relationship,job prospect,job conditions,hospital management,relative salary,job pressure,job intensity,social status and job risk.Result was transformed into centesimal system and factor score to analyze.Results Health workers were consistent that the most satisfaction dimension was relationship and the lowest was salary,and the corresponding score was 88 and 60.Furthermore,job satisfaction of health workers in hospital was obviously lower than health workers in community health service centers and health institutions,particularly in social status.Conclusion It is suggested to increase the salary of health workers and improve social status of health workers in hospital.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to provide a theoretical foundation to enhance and enrich the understanding of female sport journalists and their level of job satisfaction. In this research we sought to determine satisfaction with six distinct areas of employment by using two of the most often used survey instruments (Job Descriptive Index and Job In General) that measure job satisfaction. A total of 78 surveys were completed by members of the Association for Women in Sports Media who were identified as full-time employees of daily newspapers. Although the journalists indicated overall satisfaction with their employment, pay, supervision, coworkers, and type of work, they were dissatisfied with their promotional opportunities. Significant differences were also found by making demographic comparisons.

Abstract:This paper content analyzed 1584 news samples from 10 newspapers in China in 2012 and 2018 with the aim of exploring how the style of news has changed concurrent with the rapid expansion of digital media. The results showed that newspaper journalism in China is currently undergoing de-professionalization. Among six conventional indicators of professional news, three (brevity, immediacy, plurality of sources) are in significant decline, and the other three (adherence to conventional news structure, objectivity, and public orientation) are in partial decline. Such a shift can be interpreted as a decline in news quality, or alternatively, the formation of new journalism.
