Abstract:It is of great importance to acquire precisely the scaling-off location and the extent of slagging in the furnace to conduct combustion adjustment and avoid the dropping of bulk slag, An experimental platform where slag cooling is simulated was built, and the features of heat and mass transfer during the cooling process-of the slag were studied. The experimental results show that during the cooling process of the high-temperature slag, the closer the measuring point is to the drop point of the slag, the faster its temperature rises, by a large margin. Meanwhile, the average temperature of the-water in the upper layer shot up first and then decreased, while the temperature of the relatively deep water (>= 3 cm) tended to rise gradually. In addition, the temperature rise of the cooling water and the bursting water evaporation are in direct proportion to the mass of the slag and are in linear relation to the temperature of the slag About 20% of the slag heat is taken by bursting evaporation, and 80% is conducted to the cooling water. In a thermal powerplant's 440 t/h pulverized coal-fired boiler with, water-cooled slag removal, a temperature matrix with eight measuring points was arranged in the slag extractor. The location and mass of the slag in the furnace were determined, and the reason for slagging in,the furnace was analyzed, in order to make fine adjustments to the parameter of air supply, to improve the tangential circle deflection in the furnace further, and to avoid the dropping of bulk slag quenching the fire, which guarantees that the boiler can run safely and stably.

Abstract:For a better utilization of Zhundong coals which have high fouling and slagging tendency, the slag-tap boiler has attracted much attention. To avoid the high sensible heat loss of discharged molten slag, an air-cooling waste heat recovery system is proposed. Energy and economic analyses are conducted to investigate the effectiveness of heating the desulfurized flue gas by hot air and the influences of partially substituting the secondary air by hot air on heat transfer of air preheater and thermal efficiency of boiler. A case study is performed by referring to a typical 50 MW cyclone boiler with nine types of low fusion temperature coals. The results show that for coals with low ash content, the temperature increment of desulfurized flue gas can be over 7 ℃. While for coals with high ash content, the flue gas temperature can be heated to more than 70 ℃, and the surplus hot air can be sent to the furnace. When the hot air is introduced to partially substitute the secondary air, an instantaneous impact on the air preheater will give rise to a decrement of quantity of heat transferred and increments of temperatures of exit flue gas and hot secondary air. The variations of these thermodynamic parameters become smaller with increasing hot air temperature. After introduction of hot air, the thermal efficiency of boiler can increase, resulting in a decrease of fuel consumption rate. In addition, the heating surface area of air preheater can be reduced.

Abstract:The performance of a fluidized bed ash cooler was studied using a cold experiment bench. The air flow rate, particle size of the solids and air distributor type are considered to be the key parameters of the operation of a fluidized bed ash cooler (FBAC). It was found that the amount of fluidizing air directly affects the conveying of ash and that they have a quadratic relationship. An acceptable particle size distribution for the solids is d50<450μm. Furthermore, the experiment reveals that the height of the weir in the FBAC does not affect the conveying of the ash flow. The influence of injected air on the transportation of ash is not significant. Optimal air nozzle dimensions are presented.

Abstract:Taking air-water combined slag-cooler of a 450 t/h CFB boiler in one powr plant as the test prototype,a visual cold-state test facility has been set up in a proportion ratio of 1:5.Adopting slag discharged from actual boiler as bed material in the test,a cold-state test study on behavior of slag passing through selective chamber of a fluidized bed slag-cooler has been carried out.Results of test show that the critical fluidized air velocity of ash-slag particles is linearly increasing in proportion with the particle size;under certain velocity of the fluidized air,the slag passing rate through selective chamber has strong selectivity with particle size,regulation of the fluidized air velocity in the selective chamber can effectively control the distribution of particles entering into the cooling chamber.This behavior of selectivity can effectively be used as a guide for designing the selective chamber of a slag-cooler,and for practical operation of the slag-cooler.

Abstract:In order to improve the heat energy efficiency of hot slag,the thermal-efficiency and exergy-efficiency calculation models of two types of ash cooling equipment of a 300 MW circulating fluidized bed boiler were estab-lished and their performance was calculated. The results show that the two types of cooling equipment differ great in thermal-efficiency and exergy-efficiency,and that their thermal-efficiency is obviously higher than their exergy-efficiency. So to develop ash cooling equipment with a large scale and a high efficiency is essential for energy-saving of a large-scale CFB boiler.

Abstract:The pollution caused by hot ash drained from the bed is another challenge to atmospheric fluidized bed combustion technology when low-rank, high ash fuels are used. A new technique is developed for ash cooling and utilization of the waste heat of ash. Results from the demonstration of an 1.5 T/H patented device have shown the potential to use this type of ash cooler for drying and secondary air preheating. Bottom ash sized in the range 0-13 mm can be cooled from 1650��F (900��C) to tolerable temperatures for conveying machinery, and the cooled ash can be re-utilized for cement production.

Abstract:Characteristics of the flow field in the slag cooler of circulating fluidized beds influence greatly on the flux of discharged ash,it presents parameters of velocity and pressure in a wind water combined slag cooler with method of numerical simulation,and compares to the experimental results for the slag cooler.Good agreements are observed between computation and experiment 。This paper presents correctly the air flow filed in the slag cooler,and presents the vectorgraph of velocity,magnitude distribution of velocity and distribution of pressure in the flow field at the same time,and analyses the characteristics of the air flow field.

Abstract:Rotary ash coolers are widely used in circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) boilers for bottom ash cooling, attributed to their high efficiency and excellent reliability. However, they are mostly still designed empirically, and one of the most important reasons is due to the lack of an appropriate heat-transfer model. In this paper, a comprehensive heat-transfer model was developed and the model parameters were determined by experiments. Against the literature findings, the experimental results showed that the dimensionless thickness of gas film used in the thermal contact resistance calculation is different for different ash particle sizes. The new model was further applied to predict the heat-transfer characteristics for a rotary ash cooler used in a commercial 300 MWe CFB boiler. It was found that the heat-transfer coefficients of ash air and air water are close but much lower than that of ash water, indicating that the heat transfer of ash water dominates in the total heat transfer. In addition, the ash temperature decreases rapidly in the first half of the roller when the heating surfaces are uniformly arranged along the axis, and the outlet temperatures of ash and cooling water vary approximately linearly with the ash flow rate. In comparison to the industrial data, the model well predicts the axial distributions of the temperature and heat-transfer coefficient and the heat-transfer amount with engineering acceptable accuracy. On the basis of the modeling results, it is suggested that the roller could be more compact by rearranging more heating surfaces into the first half of it.

Abstract:The chemical compositions,mineral compositions and thermal behavior of the circulating fluidized bed boiler(CFBB) desulfurated fly ash and pulverized fly ash were investigated.The results showed that the CFBB fly ash manifested as high content of CaO and higher LOI.The major minerals present in the CFBB desulfurated fly ash were quartz,calcite and anhydrite with little mullite.There was a little glass phase in the CFBB desulfurated fly ash.While,the main mineral phases of pulverized fly ash were mullite and quartz.Observed by SEM,CFBB.

Abstract:Experimental study on the slagging characteristics of Yulin & Pingshuo blended coals was carried out in a drop tube furnace.The slagging indexes were determined at different temperatures and the quantitative analysis on the composition of mineral matters in the ash slag was made using X-ray diffraction analysis(XRD).The results indicated that four crystalline minerals-iron oxide,anorthite,mullite,silica,and another amorphous glass are mainly consisted of the ash slag and the first three have a significant effect on the slagging tendency of coals.Higher content of iron oxide in the ash and anorthite in the ash slag,together with lower content of mullite in the ash slag leads to greater slagging tendency.According to this,using coal blending to obtain lower iron oxide content,and to decrease and increase the formation quantity of anorthite and mullite respectively,the slagging tendency of Shenmu type coal could be inhibited at a lower level.

Abstract:This paper investigated the cooling processes of high temperature slags using SHTT (single hot thermocouple technique) and CFD (computational fluid dynamics) method for the purpose of recovering the waste heat. A series of slags with the CaO/SiO2 ratio of 1.1 and different Al2O3 contents were designed. The Continuous Cooling Transformation diagrams were established, aiming to bridge the gap between slag properties and practical operations. The variation of slag properties during cooling processes, including crystallization ability and glass forming ability, was investigated by SHTT and the results indicated that the variation of Al2O3 content greatly changed the slag properties, which had a great effect on heat recovery of slags. Slags with Al2O3 content 15 wt% had the smallest critical cooling rate, which was suitable for heat extraction. A 3-D model was developed to simulate the natural heat transfer between a slag droplet and the ambient air in this study using CFD package Fluent software. The results indicated that the temperature differences could be more than 100 degrees C between core and surface of slag droplets with 3 mm in diameter. These large temperature differences could cause crystallization inside the slag droplets, which should be considered in the processes of heat recovery. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Experiment research and analysis on slagging of a coal-fired chain grate stoker boiler were carried out. To the main area for slagging,the slag samples were obtained respectively in the different position of the front and rear arch. Through morphology and element analysis,effectively explained different reasons of the slagging in different positions and relationships with coal combustion conditions and characteristics. The furnace fly ash carbon content text showed precipitation of the fly ash carbon content was higher near the bed in general,otherwise the furnace arch ash carbon content was about zero. At the same time,the ash internal was porous. As a result,the fly ash with carbon would continue to burn on the arch.

Abstract:Due to the high content of alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEMs) in Zhundong coal, serious ash-related problems such as slagging and fouling occurred in the process of utilization, which has attracted wide attention. In this work, the ash deposition characteristics in a new type circulating fluidized bed boiler burning Zhundong coal was studied. The effect of steam cooled flue on alleviating slagging problems was evaluated, and the influence of flue gas temperature and wall temperature on ash deposition characteristics were studied. The results showed that the mass of ash deposition and the concentration of submicron particles decrease gradually along the direction of flue gas flow in the steam cooled flue. The deposited ash changed from tightly bound to wall to loosely deposited, which indicated that the arrangement of the steam cooled flue greatly alleviated the slagging problems. Compared with flue gas temperature, the wall temperature had a greater impact on ash deposition characteristics. Mineral elements such as Na, S, Fe and Mg were more likely to enrich on the high temperature wall, while the Ca showed the opposite trend. On the low temperature wall, Na existed in the form of Na 2 SO 4 and Na 2 Si 2 O 5 , while on the high temperature wall, the direct condensation of alkali metal vapor was prevented and the thermophoresis disappeared, so Na mainly existed in the form of Na 2 Si 2 O 5 .

Research of Heat Transfer Model in Rotary Ash Coolers

Abstract:By analyzing the flow and heat transfer process of ash particles in a rotary ash cooler with fins,a one-dimensional heat transfer model was proposed,in which the reburning of residual carbon in bottom ash was considered while the model parameters determined in accordance with relevant reference materials and experimental results.Using the model,temperatures of rotary ash cooler for a 300 MW circulating fluidized bed boiler were predicted,which were then compared with actual operation parameters.Comparison results prove the model to be accurate in predicting ash discharge and cooling water temperatures of rotary ash coolers.

Abstract:In circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) boilers, some residual char is left in the ash when the ash is drained into the rotary ash cooler (RAC). The residue char will combust in the RAC given oxygen is present. It is important to understand and predict the influence of residual char combustion on the heat transfer process in the RAC in order to avoid slagging and fouling inside the RAC. In this paper, an improved heat transfer model of the RAC was developed in which the residual char combustion process was considered. Based on the analysis, the shrinking sphere model was selected to describe the residual char combustion. The improved model was validated by the final ash temperature and cooling water temperature data measured from a few RACs equipped with the coal fired CFB boilers with different steam output. The predictions of the improved model agree well with the field measurement data, within an error range of ±10%. The simulation results also show that the heat released from residual char combustion counts for about 60–80% of the total heat released by ash in the inlet section of the RAC, and the influence of residual char combustion decreases rapidly along the ash flow. The final ash temperature increases accordingly with the increase of inlet carbon content, and decreases with the increases of residual char size. As particle size is larger than 3mm, the final ash temperature changes little at a given carbon content due to a low mass burning rate. It is suggested that combustion of residual char should be considered when the inlet carbon content is over 2.5%; otherwise, the combustion of residual char in the RAC could be neglected.

Abstract:The bottom ash cooler is an important auxiliary equipment of a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler. As the CFB boiler technology develops, the rotary ash coolers have partially substituted the fluidized bed bottom ash coolers in the industrial practice due to its excellent reliability. To meet the increased output requirement, a double-cylinder rotary ash cooler, rather than the conventional single-cylinder one, was proposed in the present study. This paper provided the design of the double-cylinder rotary ash cooler and presented its application in a 300 MWe CFB boiler. The design parameters, structural features, heat transfer performance, as well as the field trial results were discussed in the present study. In addition, a semi-empirical model was proposed to provide theoretical support for the design principle of the double-cylinder rotary ash cooler. The field trial results showed that the actual output of the installed double-cylinder rotary ash cooler was up to 32 t/h with the ash temperature at the outlet being the designed value, much greater than the value (similar to 23 t/h) of the single-cylinder one at approximately the same size. Particularly, this novel bottom ash cooler had run continuously for more than three years without any maintenances due to its reasonable design.
