Synthesis and Reactivity in Inorganic Metal-Organic and Nano-Metal Chemistry

Abstract:We report a successful synthesis of nanostructure phase-pure TiO2(B) by one-step hydrothermal process. The process was performed in a 10 mL ethanol and 30 mL glycol solution at 200 degrees C for 24 h using 0.3 mL titanium tetrachloride. The prepared materials were characterized by TEM and XRD, which provide evidence that nanostructure phase-pure TiO2(B) can be directly produced without ion exchange or further thermal treatment. Furthermore, the morphology and the phase of resultant materials can be controlled easily through changing reaction conditions.
Peanut Shaped Titanium Oxide Micro-Particles Achieved by Cathode Plasma Electrolysis and Their Electrorheological Characteristics

Abstract:Peanut shaped TiO2 micro-particles were prepared by using the huge energy of the plasma and controlling the Ti(SO4)(2) concentrations in aqueous solutions via a one-step method, cathode plasma electrolysis. The morphology and structure of the micro-particles were characterized, and the tiny nanostructures about 3-10 nm were obtained on their surface, which obviously increased their surface roughness and specific surface area. These peanut shaped TiO2 particles with nanostructures on their surface were considered to be formed by the collision of two molten TiO2 particles and then the sharply cooling in Ti(SO4)(2) solution. Most of all, the electrorheological (ER) behaviors of the peanut shaped TiO2 micro-particles were characterized using a rotational rheometer. Compared with the traditional TiO2 powders, the better ER effect of the peanut shaped micro-particles was attributed to their unique shape and special surface nanostructures.

Abstract:This study presents an efficient, economic, and simple preparation strategy for Pt/TiO2 monolith catalysts. Nano-Pt/TiO2 dispersion liquid with good activity and stability was synthesized by hydrolysis and chemical reduction method. Various Pt/TiO2 monolithic catalysts were prepared by spraying the dispersion liquid on different substrates. Results of transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, N-2 adsorption-desorption, H-2 temperature-programmed and CO oxidation showed that the Pt/TiO2 nanoparticles with good mesoporous structure and redox properties were highly dispersed on the substrate. The as-prepared 0.5 Pt/TiO2 cordierite monolithic catalyst with 0.1 wt%s Pt content exhibited excellent catalytic combustion activity (T-90 of toluene combustion was 212 degrees C), stability (no deactivation was observed during a 120 h test) and firmness (mass loss was 0.11% after 1 h ultrasonic vibration) under experimental conditions. Compared with state-of-the-art methods, this method is more suitable for large-scale production of waste-gas-treated monolith catalysts. And this method meets the concept of energy saving and emission reduction because of its simplicity, high efficiency, environmental friendliness, and high utilization of active components.

Abstract:Ultrafine powders of TiO2 with different morphologies were prepared by a combination method of Ti-H2O2 oxidation-hydrothermal growth. Both oxidation and gel (TiO2·xH2O) formation were performed at room temperature. Hydrothermal treatment was carried out at 140 to 200 °C. The results show that the pH value, reaction temperature and time, and the nature of additives can affect the particle shapes. The effects of hydrothermal parameters on the formation of crystalline phase are also discussed.

Abstract:This contribution sheds light on the role of crystal size and phase composition in inducing biomimetic apatite growth on the surface of nanostructured titania films synthesized by reactive magnetron sputtering of Ti targets in Ar+O(2) plasmas. Unlike most existing techniques, this method enables one to deposit highly crystalline titania films with a wide range of phase composition and nanocrystal size, without any substrate heating or postannealing. Moreover, by using this dry plasma-based method one can avoid surface hydroxylation at the deposition stage, almost inevitable in wet chemical processes. Results of this work show that high phase purity and optimum crystal size appear to be the essential requirement for efficient apatite formation on magnetron plasma-fabricated bioactive titania coatings.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is one of the most promising candidates for photoelectrochemistry applications. For a high photoelectrochemistry performance, the control of crystal structure and crystal facet is essential. The phase transformation of TiO2 is conventionally achieved by thermal annealing. Here, we report an approach for selective phase transformation of TiO2 containing exposed reactive facets with improved photoelectrochemistry performance. After femtosecond laser processing, TiO2 nanotubes with exposed reactive anatase {010} facets are prepared, and they have a maximum photocurrent density more than 5 times that of pure anatase. Additionally, this strategy can induce phase transformation in a selective area, which shows the advantages of patterning processing. Our method constructs a promising strategy for preparing functional nanomaterials with high performances and functionality.

Abstract:Template-free synthesis of TiO 2 architectures with controlled morphology evolution has been developed through solvothermal reaction in 1,4-dioxane. By simply varying the molar ratio of the concentrated HCl over Titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) from 0 to 5.0, series of morphologies including nanoparticle-built microspheres, nanoparticle-built microspheres decorated with nanorods, nanorod cauliflowers, and nanorod dendrites have been obtained. The influence of several key factors on the morphology control of TiO 2 has been systematically investigated. These parameters include the mass (molar) ratio of HCl/TTIP, solvothermal reaction temperature and time, acid species (concentrated nitric acid), and solvent type (tetrahydrofuran and 1,3-dioxane). The mechanism for the formation of the TiO 2 architectures with controlled morphology evolution has been discussed. The application of the TiO 2 architectures as water splitting photocatalyst and lithium–ion battery anode has been demonstrated. And the corresponding structure–property correlation has been discussed.

Abstract:A titanium dioxide (TiO2) interconnected porous structure has been fabricated by means of atomic layer deposition of TiO2 onto a reticular sponge template. The obtained freestanding TiO2 with large surface area can be easily taken out of the water to solve a complex separation procedure. A compact and conformal nanocoating was evidenced by morphologic characterization. A phase transition, as well as production of oxygen vacancies with increasing annealing temperature, was detected by x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The photocatalytic experimental results demonstrated that the powder with appropriate annealing treatment possessed excellent photocatalytic ability due to the co-action of high surface area, oxygen vacancies and the optimal crystal structure.

Abstract:A surface-modified titanium dioxide powder used for plastic modification was synthesized by one-step precipitating method at a low temperature using tetrabutyl titanate,nitric acid and vinyltriethoxysilane as raw materials.Microstructure of the composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope.The results indicate that the silane is grafted to the surface of single TiO2 particle by Ti-O-Si bond.The contact angle of the modified TiO2 with water is 144°,and the TiO2 particles can stably distribute in xylene and homoge-neously mix with the high density polyethylene.

Abstract:In this paper, one-dimensional (1-D) nanostructured TiO2 of different morphologies and structures have been selectively synthesized via a convenient, low-temperature solvothermal route and following calcination. Transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller methods were used to characterize the morphology, crystalline structure, and specific surface area of these nanostructured TiO2. The formation of different morphologies, including nanowires and nanotubes, was achieved through a deliberate control of the cosolvent. In addition to the solvent-controlled procedures, another important feature of the synthesis in the present study was that either single-crystalline nanowires (TiO2-B) or polycrystalline nanotubes (anatase and TiO2-B) were achieved by heat treatment at 350 degrees C. The electrochemical performances of the nanowires and nanotubes were further explored in terms of their potential application as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The lithium-insertion reactions involved in the two materials were elucidated by means of a galvanostatic method, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results suggest that both the crystalline structure and the unique 1-D morphology might be responsible for their favorable electrochemical properties. This work will be valuable for the understanding of the formation of nanostructured TiO2 by the wet-chemistry process and further applications.

Abstract:This paper reports on the preparation of precursors of mixed oxide systems by an electrochemical process based on anodic dissolution of titanium in an electrolyte containing Cl – , NO 3– , Al 3+ , Zr 4+ , and Y 3+ ions in the presence of OH – ions electrogenerated on a cathode, interaction of electrode reaction products, their hydrolysis, and coprecipitation of hydrolyzed species. Synthesis was carried out in a coaxial diaphragmless electrochemical reactor having electrodes differing considerably in area and resulted in the formation of primary particles of precursors to oxide phases through hydrolysis, polycondensation, and crystallization. The proposed approach allows complex titania-based systems to be prepared in the form of anatase and brookite phases stable in the temperature range 80–550°C, and the addition of Al 3+ ions leads to the formation of the boehmite phase, which undergoes no changes up to 550°C. Heat treatment of the precipitates at 1100°C raised the degree of crystallinity of the samples, and all of the synthesized oxide systems were found to contain the rutile phase (TiO 2 ) and the mixed oxide TiZrO 2 . The formation of Ti 2 Y 2 O 7 makes it possible to stabilize the cubic zirconia phase formed during the electrolysis process, which ensures high mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and sinterability of ceramic particles based on alumina- and yttria-modified titania and zirconia.

Abstract:Via properly changing concentration of titanium precursor, tuning the residence time and controlling of the temperature field in the reaction region, nanocrystalline TiO2 powders were synthesized by the diffusion flame method with well-dispersed behavior and controlled crystal structures and particles size. The XPS and IR results showed that there existed high hydration and oxygen vacancies on the surface of the as-prepared nanocrystalline TiO2 powders, which played a dominant role in controlling polymorph fraction by altering the critical particles size of phase transition. The thermodynamics analysis demonstrated that the high hydration on TiO2 surface can produce the lattice contraction, which effectively stabilizes anatase phase. However, the oxygen vacancies on TiO2 surface can decrease activation energy of phase transition of anatase to rutile, which facilitates the phase transformation.
Controlled Synthesis of TiC Nanoparticles Using Solid Oxide Membrane Technology in Molten CaCl2

Abstract:Metal carbides (MCs), especially transition metal carbides have attracted a lot of attentions due to their unique properties, such as high strength and hardness, good chemical and thermal stability. In this paper, a new route was proposed for preparing TiC nanoparticles directly from TiO2/C precursor by using solid oxide membrane (SOM) technology in molten CaCl2. The TiO2/C pellet pressed under 8 MPa was used as the cathode, and a yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) tube filled with carbon-saturated liquid tin was served as the anode. This process employs an inert SOM to separate the anodic reaction area from the molten electrolyte to control the electrolysis process. The electrochemical process was carried out in molten CaCl2 at 1000 degrees C and 4.0 V from 0.5 to 4 h. The characteristics of the phase composition and morphology of the electrolysis products were investigated. The product electrolyzed was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The results show that TiC nanoparticles can be obtained directly from TiO2/C mixture at 1000 degrees C, 4.0 V and for 4 h in molten CaCl2 and the current efficiency is calculated to be 74.1%. In conclusion, we suggest that the SOM process is a promising environmentally friendly and low energy costs electrochemical method for the facile and controllable electrodeoxidation of MOx/C precursors to micro/nanostructured MCs.

Abstract:A method of micro-mixing-precipitation technology was developed from membrane dispersion technology to prepare ultra-fine TiO2 particles. Titanic sulfate was selected as the dispersed phase, and ammonium acid carbonate as the continuous phase. The influences of the reactant concentrations and two-phase flow rate were investigated. The crystal structure and crystal dimension of the particles were analyzed by XRD, morphology, particle size and size distribution by TEM. The results showed that the spheric TiO2 nano-particles with small size and narrow size distribution could be prepared with the method. The crystal dimension and the particle size of the TiO2 particles were increased with the increasing of reactant concentrations at first, then decreased. They also were decreased with the increasing of the flow rate of Ti(SO4)(2) solution, but increased with the increasing of the flow rate of NH4HCO3 solution.

Abstract:Square and labyrinth-like titanium dioxide particles were successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method with assistant of halloysite nanotubes. The morphology and microstructure of as-prepared photo-catalysts were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photo-catalytic activity of as-prepared catalysts was evaluated by degradation of organic pollutants (Rhodamine B, methylene blue and methanol) under UV light irradiation.
