Abstract:Perovskite materials are promising for thermochemical energy storage due to their ability to undergo redox cycling over a wide temperature range. Although BaCoO3 exhibits excellent air cycling properties, its heat storage capacity in air remains suboptimal. This study introduces Na into the lattice structure to enhance oxygen vacancy formation and mobility. DFT+U simulations of the surface structure of Na-doped BaCoO3−δ indicate that incorporating Na improves surface stability and facilitates the formation of surface oxygen vacancies. NaxBa1−xCoO3−δ compounds were synthesized using a modified sol–gel method, and their properties were investigated. The experimental results demonstrate that Na doping significantly enhances the redox activity of the material. The heat storage capacity increased by above 50%, with the Na0.0625Ba0.9375CoO3−δ solid solution achieving a heat storage density of up to 341.7 kJ/kg. XPS analysis reveals that Na doping increases the concentration of surface defect oxygen, leading to more active oxygen release sites at high temperatures. This enhancement in redox activity aligns with DFT predictions. During high-temperature cycling, the distribution of Na within the material becomes more uniform, and no performance degradation is observed after 300 cycles. Even after 450 cycles, Na0.0625Ba0.9375CoO3−δ retains over 96% of its initial redox activity, significantly outperforming fresh BaCoO3−δ. These findings elucidate the mechanism by which Na doping enhances the thermochemical heat storage performance of BaCoO3−δ and provide new insights for the design of perovskite-based materials.
Strain-induced Ferroelectricity and Lattice Coupling in BaSnO3 and SrSnO3.

Abstract:Perovskite stannates such as BaSnO3 and SrSnO3 exhibit promising photovoltaic properties, and hold promise for application in solar cell devices. However, the lack of ferroelectricity and the wide band gap in these materials limit their potential for photovoltaic applications. Here, by first-principles calculations, we demonstrate the realization of a primary ferroelectric polarization in non-ferroelectric BaSnO3 and SrSnO3 through strain engineering. In addition to the appearance of polarization, the band gaps of the materials are greatly narrowed when the paraelectric to ferroelectric phase transition takes place under compressive strain. Furthermore, an intriguing Q2 mode triggered by lattice coupling with the polar mode is found in the stannates subjected to a sufficient tensile strain and this mode has a significant effect on the band gap, which suggests another pathway to narrow the band gap through the electric field control of the Q2 mode. The fruitful electronic, structural, and energetic properties are discussed in detail to achieve a fundamental understanding of the strain-induced ferroelectricity, tunable band gap, and lattice couplings between the Q2 mode and different polar/rotational distortions in the perovskite stannates.
Oxide perovskite BaSnO3: A promising high-temperature thermoelectric material for transparent conducting oxides

Abstract:The new technology of energy conversion must be developed to ensure energy sustainability. Thermoelectric (TE) materials provide an effective means to solve the energy crisis. As a potential TE candidate, the TE properties of perovskite have received extensively attention. We here investigate the TE transport properties of the transparent conducting oxide (TCO) BaSnO3 by first-principles calculations. We find that the BaSnO3 perovskite exhibits outstanding dynamic and thermal stabilities, which provide excellent electronic and thermal transport properties simultaneously. These properties contribute to the remarkable Seebeck coefficient and power factor, which gives rise to the ZT of n-0.37 and p-1.52 at 900 K. Additionally, doping and nanostructure open prospects for effectively improving the TE properties of BaSnO3. Our work provides a basis for further optimizing the TE transport properties of cubic BaSnO3 and may have worthwhile practical significance for applying cubic perovskite to the high-temperature thermoelectric field.

Abstract:Strontium titanate (STO) is an n-type oxide thermoelectric material, which has shown great prospects in recent years. The doping of La and Nb into STO can improve its power factor, whereas its thermal conductivity is still very high. Thus, in order to obtain a high thermoelectric figure-of-merit zT, it is very important to reduce its thermal conductivity. In this paper, using a combination of a hydrothermal method and a high-efficiency sintering method, we succeed in preparing a composite of pure STO and LaNb-doped STO, which simultaneously realizes lower thermal conductivity and higher Seebeck coefficient, therefore, the thermoelectric properties of STO are significantly improved. In the SrTiO3/LaNb-SrTiO3 bulk samples, the lowest thermal conductivity is 2.57 W.m(-1).K-1 and the highest zT is 0.35 at 1000 K for the STO/La10Nb20-STO sample.

Abstract:Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) and transparent oxide semiconductors (TOSs) have become necessary materials for a variety of applications in the information and energy technologies, ranging from transparent electrodes to active electronics components. Perovskite barium stannate (BaSnO3), a new TCO or TOS system, is a potential platform for realizing optoelectronic devices and observing novel electronic quantum states due to its high electron mobility, excellent thermal stability, high transparency, structural versatility, and flexible doping controllability at room temperature. This article reviews recent progress in the doped BaSnO3 system, discussing the wide physical properties, electron-scattering mechanism, and demonstration of key semiconducting devices such as pn diodes and field-effect transistors. Moreover, we discuss the pathways to achieving two-dimensional electron gases at the interface between BaSnO3 and other perovskite oxides and describe remaining challenges for observing novel quantum phenomena at the heterointerface.

Abstract:Band gap and polarization are two important quantities for enhancing the performance of photovoltaic materials. Based on first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that direct band gap and hybrid improper ferroelectric polarization coexist in BaSnO3/SrSnO3 superlattices. Furthermore, the band gap and polarization can be simultaneously tuned by mechanical strain and pressure. In the presence of tensile strain or negative pressure, the band gap is substantially lowered and the polarization is enhanced by about five times in comparison with that without mechanical loads. The lowered band gap is necessary for increasing the efficiency of light absorption, whereas the enhanced polarization is desirable for the separation of photo-excited carriers in the materials. The present work suggests that the strained BaSnO3/SrSnO3 superlattices are promising ferroelectric semiconducting materials for photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:Tin-based halide perovskites are promising room-temperature thermoelectric materials due to their ultralow thermal conductivity and propensity for doping. However, poor phase stability and inferior electrical transport properties hinder their practical application. Herein, we found that organic cation formamidinium (FA) doping, which is not possible by high-temperature processing, could simultaneously enhance the stability and electrical conductivity of CsSnI3 films through a simple solution process. The carrier concentration of 3 × 1019 cm–3 was obtained in FA-doped films, which leads to an 8× enhancement in electrical conductivity to 26.5 S cm–1 but maintains a Seebeck coefficient as high as 131 μV K–1, resulting in a power factor of 45.53 μW m–1 K–2. A further theoretical calculation shows that the enhanced carrier concentration originates from the lowered transition energy of tin vacancies in the doped films. More importantly, remarkable phase stability is achieved under an ambient atmosphere, which stems from a sharply decreased free energy of the B-γ phase compared to the Y phase by FA doping. This work suggests that organic cation doping by facile solution processing is an avenue for the simultaneous improvement of the thermoelectric power factor and phase stability of tin-based halide perovskite. It is applicable for flexible and wearable thermoelectric generators to harvest energy from low-grade heat sources.

Abstract:The photoelectric properties of nontoxic Sn-based perovskite make it a promising alternative to toxic Pb-based perovskite. It has superior photovoltaic performance in comparison to other Pb-free counterparts. The facile oxidation of Sn2+ to Sn4+ presents a notable obstacle in the advancement of perovskite solar cells that utilize Sn, as it adversely affects their stability and performance. The study revealed the presence of a Sn4+ concentration on both the upper and lower surfaces of the perovskite layer. This discovery led to the adoption of a bi-interface optimization approach. A thin layer of Sn metal was inserted at the two surfaces of the perovskite layer. The implementation of this intervention yielded a significant decrease in the levels of Sn4+ and trap densities. The power conversion efficiency of the device was achieved at 14.31 % through the optimization of carrier transportation. The device exhibited operational and long-term stability.

Abstract:The inorganic halide perovskite CsSnI3 has attracted significant attention for use as a thermoelectric material owing to its ultralow thermal conductivity and unique electrical properties. In this study, we report lead iodide (PbI2) doping to optimize the thermoelectric performance of bulk CsSnI3. The addition of a small amount of PbI2 narrowed the bandgap of CsSnI3 and modulated its carrier concentration, improving the electrical conductivity of CsSnI3. Moreover, the lattice distortion caused by PbI2 doping led to a significant decrease in the lattice thermal conductivity of CsSnI3. Finally, the thermoelectric performance was enhanced, and the highest ZT value attained was 0.14 at 523 K.

Abstract:We report calculations of the electronic structure and optical properties of doped $n$-type perovskite BaSnO3 and layered perovskites. While doped BaSnO$_3$ retains its transparency for energies below the valence to conduction band onset, the doped layered compounds exhibit below band edge optical conductivity due to transitions from the lowest conduction band. This gives absorption in the visible for Ba2SnO4. Thus it is important to minimize this phase in transparent conducting oxide (TCO) films. Ba3Sn2O7 and Ba4Sn3O10 have strong transitions only in the red and infrared, respectively. Thus there may be opportunities for using these as wavelength filtering TCO.

Abstract:B-site doping with bismuth ion (Bi3+) is adopted to enhance the quality and stability of CsSnI3 perovskite. The partial displacement of Sn2+ with Bi3+ can not only improve the morphology, crystallinity, and stability of CsSnI3 perovskite film, but also reduce the trap density of CsSnI3 perovskite. Consequently, the fabricated perovskite solar cell with Bi3+-doped CsSnI3 perovskite deliver a high power conversion efficiency of 6.11 %, which is increased by 77 % compared to the efficiency of the control cell. In addition, the device without any encapsulation preserves over 72 % of its initial efficiency after storage in ambient condition for 240 h.

Abstract:Lead-free perovskite materials with high performance have high potential in clean energy storage applications and developments of electrocaloric devices. This work reports structural, dielectric, ferroelectric, energy storage, and electrocaloric properties near the ambient temperature in barium stannate titanate (BaTi 0.89 Sn 0.11 O 3, BTS 11 ) ceramic prepared by a sol–gel method. A single perovskite structure formation was confirmed using the X-ray diffraction analysis. Average grain size of 18.5 μm was found by the mean of the SEM micrograph with a density of 5.91 g/cm 3 . The multiphase coexistence at very near ambient temperature was proved using temperature-dependent micro-Raman measurements and differential scanning calorimetry. The BTS 11 ceramic exhibits a high dielectric constant of 15,460 and a low dielectric loss (< 0.055) in a broad temperature range. Moreover, a high energy storage density of 122 mJ/cm 3 was shown with an efficiency of 79%, a maximum value of electrocaloric temperature change (Δ T ) of 0.86 K, and finally, an electrocaloric responsivity (Δ T /Δ E ) of 0.24 K.mm/kV at the external electric field change of 35 kV/cm near ambient temperature. The enhanced dielectric, ferroelectric, and electrocaloric properties make BTS 11 ceramics a great candidate for solid-state cooling technology and high energy storage applications near ambient temperature.

Abstract:Wide-bandgap perovskite stannates are of interest for the emergent all-oxide transparent electronic devices due to their unparalleled room temperature electron mobility. Considering the advantage of amorphous material in integrating with non-semiconductor platforms, we herein reported the optical and electronic properties in the prototypical stannate, amorphous barium stannate (BaSnO3) thin films, which were deposited at room temperature and annealed at various temperatures. Despite remaining amorphous status, with increasing the annealing temperature, the defect level within amorphous BaSnO3 thin films could be suppressed. Accordingly, the optical band gap, the leakage current, and the breakdown electric field could be improved from 2.81 eV, 3.94 × 10−6 A cm−2 at 400 kV/cm, 1.43 MV/cm for the as-prepared BaSnO3 thin films to 2.90 eV, 6.17 × 10−8 A cm−2 at 400 kV/cm, 1.93 MV/cm for the 400 °C-annealed BaSnO3 thin films.

Abstract:Lead sulfide (PbS) is a type of promising thermoelectric materials which is consist of elements with high natural abundance. However, the relatively low conversion efficiency limits its further application due to the high lattice thermal conductivity of PbS compared with that of PbTe. It has been widely accepted that nanostructuring and doping are effective ways to enhance the thermoelectric properties. Herein, nano/micro structure Bi doped PbS materials have beensynthesized by a facile method of hydrothermal synthesis. The nano/micro structure material systems exist abundant interface which could scatter mid- and low-frequency phonons effectively, combined with point defect such as Bi–Pb scattering high-frequency phonons, and thus the results show that the lattice thermal conductivity of PbS decreases with the increasing concentration of Bi3+ doping as expected. Moreover, the optimal power factor (PF) can be obtained by tuning the carrier concentration and mobility at the same time. The optimal thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) can reach 0.89 for Pb0.96Bi0.04S at 773K and rises with the increase of the temperature without sign of saturation. Our work may shed light to further possible and environmentally friendly application of PbS-based thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:In this work, the thermoelectric (TE) performance of [Formula: see text]-type SnTe based on melt spinning (MS) technology is comprehensively researched. Elements of Sb and Bi are introduced to significantly improve the electrical transport properties. Along with the fine grains, SnTe-based ribbons can be obtained in a short time by MS method. It indicates that the MS technology improves the sample preparation efficiency and reduces the lattice thermal conductivity. The melt-spun one reveals that the lowest lattice thermal conductivity of Sn[Formula: see text]Sb[Formula: see text]Bi[Formula: see text]Te is 0.87 W m[Formula: see text]K[Formula: see text]at 323 K. To optimize the ZT (where [Formula: see text] is the figure of merit and [Formula: see text] is Kelvin temperature) of SnTe, Sb and Bi are codoped in SnTe matrix, as a result of the enhancement of the power factor (PF) value and decreasing the thermal conductivity and electronic thermal conductivity simultaneously. Finally, the highest ZT of 1.01 at 823 K and an average ZT of 0.57 is obtained over a broad temperature range from 323 K to 823 K in Sn[Formula: see text]Sb[Formula: see text]Bi[Formula: see text]Te. It is worth noting that the remarkable improvement on the TE performance of pristine SnTe sample is achieved, with the highest ZT of 0.55 at 823 K and an average ZT of 0.18. It shows the potential for following research on the performance of lead-free SnTe-based TE materials.
