Abstract:Liquid-like materials have gained notable attention in thermoelectrics due to their ultralow lattice thermal conductivity and tunable electrical properties. Particularly, Cu2S-based materials have the advantages of earth abundant and environmentally friendly constituents, which have the great potential for industry applications. However, Cu2S undergoes a series of phase transitions above room temperature and only the high temperature cubic phase (above 700 K) exhibits desirable thermoelectric properties, leading to the low averaged thermoelectric performance. Herein we theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that the phase transition temperature can be strongly suppressed by tuning the chemical bonding in Mn-doped Cu2S, which effectively move the high-symmetry cubic phase to a much low-temperature regime. The weakened chemical bonding facilitates the formation of Cu vacancies and thus improves the hole concentrations for optimized electrical transports. Furthermore, the lattice thermal conductivity is suppressed due to the reduced sound velocity by lattice softening and the enhanced phonon scattering by point defects. As a total result, high average power factors of 6.13 mu W cm-1 K-2 and average zT values of 0.44 are obtained in the temperature range of 423 to 723 K, both of which outperform most Cu2S-based materials reported so far. The present study corroborates that chemical bonding engineering can serve as a scaffold for regulating the phase structures and transport properties in thermoelectric materials.
Electronic Transport and Thermoelectric Properties of Cu12-xZnxSb4S13 Tetrahedrites Prepared by Mechanical Alloying and Hot Pressing

Abstract:Tetrahedrite Cu12Sb4S13 has low lattice thermal conductivity because of the lone-pair electrons of Sb, which cause the Cu atoms to vibrate at a low frequency and high amplitude. When the Cu atoms of Cu12Sb4S13 are partially substituted with a transition metal, changes in the Cu vibrations can intensify phonon scattering, thereby enhancing the thermoelectric properties. The synthesis of tetrahedrite compounds by conventional melting methods requires sophisticated reactions because the S element vaporizes at low temperature and its homogenization requires a long time. However, a homogeneous and solid-state synthesis can be carried out in a short time using mechanical alloying, because the volatilization of the constituent elements is inhibited and the subsequent heat treatment is not necessary. In this study, Zn-doped Cu12xZnxSb4S13 tetrahedrites were prepared by mechanical alloying (MA) and hot pressing (HP), and their electronic transport and thermoelectric properties were examined. A single tetrahedrite phase was successfully obtained by the MA-HP process without subsequent heat treatment. The lattice constant increased with the Zn content, confirming that Zn was substituted for Cu. Zn doping led to p-type conduction characteristics; however, it did not effectively increase the power factor. However, the thermal conductivity showed a marked decrease upon Zn doping, due to decrease in carrier contribution. A dimensionless figure of merit of 0.76 was obtained at 723 K for Cu11.6Zn0.4Sb4S13. (Received February 27, 2019; Accepted March 21, 2019)
Synthesis of Fe-Doped Tetrahedrites Cu12-xFexSb4S13 and Characterization of Their Thermoelectric Properties

Abstract:Tetrahedrite (C12Sb4S13) has attracted attention as a p-type thermoeletric material with very low thermal conductivity induced by the anharmonic oscillation of Cu due to the lone-pair electrons of Sb. Many studies have been conducted to improve its thermoelectric performance by partially substituting the transition elements for the Cu sites. In this study, Fe-doped tetrahedrites Cu12-xFexSb4S13 (x = 0.1-0.4) were prepared by mechanical alloying and hot pressing. The tetrahedrite phase was successfully synthesized by mechanical alloying without post-annealing and exhibited stability even without phase transition after hot pressing. Moreover, the Fe content was observed to be directly proportional to the lattice constant, which confirmed the Fe substitutions on the Cu sites. The electrical conductivity was observed to decrease with the increase in the Seebeck coefficient due to the charge compensation caused by Fe doping (electron donation). The highest power factor was 0.84 mWm-1K-2 at 723 K for the specimen with x = 0.1; however, it decreased with an increase in Fe content. In addition, as the Fe content increased, the electronic thermal conductivity decreased. Thus, the lowest thermal conductivity value was obtained for the specimen with x = 0.4 (0.45–0.64 Wm-1K-1) in the temperature range of 323–723 K. As a result, the maximum value of the dimensionless figure of merit (ZT = 0.80) was achieved at 723 K for the specimen with x = 0.2.
Phase Tuning for Enhancing the Thermoelectric Performance of Solution-Synthesized Cu 2– x S

Abstract:Cu2S, consisting of Earth-abundant and eco-friendly elements, is a promising candidate for thermoelectric energy conversion. The stoichiometric Cu2S has intrinsically low thermal conductivity together with meagre electrical conductivity. Herein, in order to improve the electrical properties, we develop a facile solvothermal method for synthesizing a series of Cu2–xS with tunable phase compositions. With reduction in the CuCl/Na2S molar ratio in the solution precursors from 2:1 to 1.75:1, the solvothermal products transform from single-phase Cu2S into Cu2S–Cu1.96S composites, which are preserved in the hot-pressed pellets. The decreased CuCl/Na2S molar ratio results in increased room-temperature Hall carrier concentration, leading to enhanced electrical conductivity. Specifically, the pellet corresponding to the 1.75:1 CuCl/Na2S precursor ratio obtains a power factor of 8.04 μW cm–1 K–2 at 815 K, which is ∼735% of the value obtained by stoichiometric Cu2S. Along with the moderate thermal conductivity, this sample achieves an enhanced zT value of 0.87 at 815 K, representing a ∼250% increase when compared to stoichiometric Cu2S. Abstract:Chalcogenides have been considered as promising thermoelectric materials because of their low cost, nontoxicity, and environmental benignity. In this work, we synthesized a series of Cu2S1- xTe x (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) alloys by a facile, rapid method of mechanical alloying combined with spark plasma sintering process. The Cu2S1- xTe x system provides an excellent vision of the competition between pure phase and phase transformation, entropy-driven solid solution, and enthalpy-driven phase separation. When the Te concentration increases, the Cu2S1- xTe x system changed from the pure monoclinic Cu2S at x = 0 to monoclinic Cu2S1- xTe x solid solution at 0.02 ≤ x ≤ 0.06 and then transforms to hexagonal Cu2S1- xTe x solid solution at 0.08 ≤ x ≤ 0.1. The phase separation of hexagonal Cu2Te in the hexagonal Cu2S matrix occurs at 0.3 ≤ x ≤ 0.7 and finally forms the hexagonal Cu2Te at x = 1. Owing to the changed band structure and the coexisted Cu2S and Cu2Te phases, greatly enhanced power factor was achieved in all Cu2S1- xTe x (0 < x < 1) alloys. Meanwhile, the point defect introduced by the substitution of Te/S atoms strengthened the phonon scattering, resulting in a lowered lattice thermal conductivity in most of these solid solutions. As a consequence, Cu2S0.94Te0.06 exhibits a maximum ZT value of 1.18 at 723 K, which is about 3.7 and 14.8 times as compared to the values of pristine Cu2S (0.32) and Cu2Te (0.08), respectively.
Enhancing thermoelectric performance of Cu1.8S by Sb/Sn co-doping and incorporating multiscale defects to scatter heat-carrying phonons

Abstract:Cu-based chalcogenides have attracted increasing attention as a potential thermoelectric material due to their unique structural features, high element abundance, and low toxicity. In this paper, a series of Cu1.8SbxSnyS compositions (0.01 < x < 0.04, 0.015 < y < 0.045) were prepared by a simple method combining mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The results demonstrate that Sb/Sn co-doping can optimize the hole concentration and substantially improve the dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) of copper-sulfide Cu1.8S. The highest ZT, up to 1.2 at 773 K, was realized for the Cu1.8Sb0.02Sn0.03S sample and maintained a high power factor of 975 W m(-1) K-2. The reduction in thermal conductivity was linked to the heterogeneous phase of Cu12Sb4S13 and Cu4SnS4. Remarkably, after four testing cycles, the variation in ZT was less than 2%, indicating a good stability of the Sb/Sn co-doped Cu1.8S materials.
Achieving a High Thermoelectric Performance of Tetrahedrites by Adjusting the Electronic Density of States and Enhancing Phonon Scattering

Abstract:Recently, many researchers have focused on tetrahedrite-based compounds due to their intrinsic low thermal conductivity; however, their thermoelectric performance is limited by the lower power factor. In this case, using Ge doping on Sb sites, the power factor is obviously enhanced due to an increment in carrier concentration and density of states; simultaneously, the thermal conductivity is substantially suppressed by atomic defects. Also, ZnO nanoparticles are introduced in the Ge-doped compounds to further weaken the thermal conductivity. As a result, the maximum dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) of ∼1.0 is obtained for the Cu12Sb3.96Ge0.04S13-0.5 wt % ZnO sample at 750 K, which is ∼72% larger than that of Cu12Sb4S13. All results indicate that suitable elemental doping combined with the incorporation of the nanophase is a very promising approach for Cu12Sb4S13 tetrahedrites to improve the thermoelectric performance.
Thermoelectric Properties of Mechanically-Alloyed and Hot-Pressed Cu12−xCoxSb4S13 Tetrahedrites

Abstract:Co-doped Cu12−xCoxSb4S13 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) tetrahedrites were prepared by mechanical alloying and hot pressing. X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that all specimens consisted of single-phase tetrahedrite without secondary phases and that the lattice constant increased with increasing Co content. The electrical conductivity decreased and the Seebeck coefficient increased with increasing Co content because of the reduction in the carrier (hole) concentration resulting from the substitution of Co at Cu sites. In addition, the thermal conductivity decreased as the Co content increased owing to a decrease in the electronic thermal conductivity. A dimensionless figure of merit (ZT)of 0. 94 was obtained at 723 K for Cu11.8Co0.2Sb4S13.

CsCu5S3: Promising Thermoelectric Material with Enhanced Phase Transition Temperature.

Abstract:Cu2S, featuring low cost, nontoxicity, and earth abundance, has been recently recognized as a high efficiency thermoelectric (TE) material. However, before reaching the maximum of the figure of merit ( ZT), Cu2S undergoes three phase transformations starting at 370 K, which give rise to severe problems, such as possible decomposition and low reliability. Herein, we discover CsCu5S3 with phase transformation at 823 K, which is significantly higher than the 370 K value of Cu2S. Single crystal diffraction data reveal that its two phases are constructed by the same Cu4S4 columnar building unit via propagating either at the opposite sides into a layered o-CsCu5S3, or at the four apexes into a 3D t-CsCu5S3, respectively. Interestingly, the o-to- t transformation is quick, but the reverse one is relatively slow. Theoretical studies reveal that the Cu4S4 column exhibits not only the most condensed atomic aggregation ( Dcolumn) but also the lightest effective mass ( m*), along which higher σ is realized. More interestingly, both phases exhibit remarkable ZT enhancements, 0.46 at 800 K for o-CsCu5S3, and 0.56 at 875 K for t-CsCu5S3, which are 170% and 175% that of Cu2S at the same temperature.

Achieving high power factor and thermoelectric performance through dual substitution of Zn and Se in tetrahedrites Cu12Sb4S13

Abstract:As an environmentally friendly thermoelectric material with its constituents being free of Pb/Te, tetrahedrite Cu12Sb4S13 absorbs much research interest. However, its low thermoelectric performance inhibits its applications. Here, we show that through dual substitution of Se for S and Zn for Cu in the compound, both the electrical conductivity and the thermopower are enhanced, leading to the elevation of the power factor as high as ∼33% (at 723 K). Analyses indicate that the substitution of Se for S gives rise to changes in stoichiometry of Cu12Sb4S13 through precipitation of impurity phase Cu3SbS4, which causes variations of S vacancies and hole concentrations, while Zn2+ substitution for Cu1+ introduces donors, both of which tune and optimize the carrier concentration. Besides, the lattice thermal conductivity of dual substituted samples is reduced by as low as ∼30% (at 723 K) due to intensified phonon scattering of the impurities (Se and Zn). As a result, a large figure of merit ZT = 0.9 (at 723 K) is achieved in Cu12−yZnySb4S12.8Se0.2 samples with y = 0.025 and 0.05, which is ∼41% higher than that of pristine tetrahedrite Cu12Sb4S13, indicating that dual substitution is an effective approach to improving its thermoelectric performance.
PbS–Pb–Cu x S Composites for Thermoelectric Application

Abstract:Composite materials offer numerous advantages in a wide range of applications, including thermoelectrics. Here, semiconductor-metal composites are produced by just blending nanoparticles of a sulfide semiconductor obtained in aqueous solution and at room temperature with a metallic Cu powder. The obtained blend is annealed in a reducing atmosphere and afterward consolidated into dense polycrystalline pellets through spark plasma sintering (SPS). We observe that, during the annealing process, the presence of metallic copper activates a partial reduction of the PbS, resulting in the formation of PbS-Pb-CuxS composites. The presence of metallic lead during the SPS process habilitates the liquid-phase sintering of the composite. Besides, by comparing the transport properties of PbS, the PbS-Pb-CuxS composites, and PbS-CuxS composites obtained by blending PbS and CuxS nanoparticles, we demonstrate that the presence of metallic lead decisively contributes to a strong increase of the charge carrier concentration through spillover of charge carriers enabled by the low work function of lead. The increase in charge carrier concentration translates into much higher electrical conductivities and moderately lower Seebeck coefficients. These properties translate into power factors up to 2.1 mW m-1 K-2 at ambient temperature, well above those of PbS and PbS + CuxS. Additionally, the presence of multiple phases in the final composite results in a notable decrease in the lattice thermal conductivity. Overall, the introduction of metallic copper in the initial blend results in a significant improvement of the thermoelectric performance of PbS, reaching a dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit ZT = 1.1 at 750 K, which represents about a 400% increase over bare PbS. Besides, an average ZTave = 0.72 in the temperature range 320-773 K is demonstrated.

Abstract:Pores in a solid can effectively reduce thermal conduction, but they are not favored in thermoelectric materials due to simultaneous deterioration of electrical conductivity. Conceivably, creating a porous structure may endow thermoelectric performance enhancement provided that overwhelming reduction of electrical conductivity can be suppressed. This work demonstrates such an example, in which a porous structure is formed leading to a significant enhancement in the thermoelectric figure of merit (zT). By a unique BiI3 sublimation technique, pore networks can be introduced into tetrahedrite Cu12Sb4S13-based materials, accompanied by changes in their hierarchical structures. The addition of a small quantity of BiI3 (0.7 vol%) results in a approximate to 72% reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity, whereas the electrical conductivity is improved due to unexpected enhanced carrier mobility. As a result, an enhanced zT of 1.15 at 723 K in porous tetrahedrite and a high conversion efficiency of 6% at Delta T = 419 K in a fabricated segmented single-leg based on this porous material are achieved. This work offers an effective way to concurrently modulate the electrical and thermal properties during the synthesis of high-performance porous thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:Nanostructuring and defect engineering are increasingly employed as processing strategies for thermoelectric performance enhancement, and special attention has been paid to nanostructured interfaces and dislocations that can effectively scatter low- and mid-frequency phonons. This work demonstrated that their combination was realized in Fe2O3-dispersed tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) nanocomposites, leading to significantly reduced thermal conductivities around 0.9 W m-1 K-1 at all temperatures and hence a high ZT value of ∼1.0, which increases by ∼33% compared with that of the matrix. The plausible enhancement mechanisms have been analyzed with an emphasis on the incorporation of magnetic γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) into Cu11.5Ni0.5Sb4S13, leading to various nanostructures (NPs, nanoprecipitates, and nanotwins) and dislocations. A calculated efficiency of ∼9.3% and an average ZT of 0.63 also reveal the potential application of tetrahedrite at medium temperatures. Additionally, the mechanical properties are improved because of a second phase strengthening and nanotwin structures.

Abstract:Tetrahedrite Cu 12 Sb 4 S 13 was prepared by mechanical alloying and hot pressing, and its thermal stability and mechanical properties were examined. The phase transformation (decomposition), chemical composition, elemental redistribution, microstructure, hardness, and three-point bending strength were studied under various aging conditions (atmospheric, temperature, and time). Endothermic peaks were observed at temperatures from 845 K to 892 K and were found to be related to tetrahedrite decompositions. The Vickers hardness of the pristine specimen was 2.2 GPa on average, and did not significantly change with the aging conditions. The bending strength of the pristine specimen was 26.7 MPa on average, and it remarkably decreased to 6.2 MPa after aging at 723 K for 100 h in air. However, it was 21.4 MPa after aging at 723 K for 100 h in vacuum.

Abstract:Fine-grained and nanostructured composites have long been known for their superiority in enhancing thermoelectric performance; however, exploring these structures based on Cu12Sb4S13 tetrahedrites is difficult due to the methods of synthesis. This study reports Nb2O5 nanoparticles-dispersed Cu11.5Ni0.5Sb4S13-δ composites synthesized by a facile method combining mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The enhanced electrical conductivity and the high power factor were obtained over the entire temperature ranges, likely derived from the fine-grained nanostructures through the repeated MA and SPS process. The uniformly distributed Nb2O5 nanoparticles and nanopores indicate the effectiveness of reducing the lattice thermal conductivity, below 0.6 W m−1 K−1, due to strong low-mid frequency phonon scattering. A small quantity of Nb2O5 addition (0.3 vol%) led to a high ZT ~1.2 at 723 K, which increased by ~50% compared to the matrix sample. These nanocomposites also possessed high average ZT, thermoelectric conversion efficiency, and fracture toughness.

Abstract:As an environmentally friendly thermoelectric material with its constituents being free of Pb/Te, tetrahedrite Cu12Sb4S13 absorbs much research interest. However, its low thermoelectric performance inhibits its applications. Here, we show that through dual substitution of Se for S and Zn for Cu in the compound, both the electrical conductivity and the thermopower are enhanced, leading to the elevation of the power factor as high as similar to 33% (at 723 K). Analyses indicate that the substitution of Se for S gives rise to changes in stoichiometry of Cu12Sb4S13 through precipitation of impurity phase Cu3SbS4, which causes variations of S vacancies and hole concentrations, while Zn2+ substitution for Cu1+ introduces donors, both of which tune and optimize the carrier concentration. Besides, the lattice thermal conductivity of dual substituted samples is reduced by as low as similar to 30% (at 723 K) due to intensified phonon scattering of the impurities (Se and Zn). As a result, a large figure of merit ZT = 0.9 (at 723 K) is achieved in Cu12-yZnySb4S12.8Se0.2 samples with y = 0.025 and 0.05, which is similar to 41% higher than that of pristine tetrahedrite Cu12Sb4S13, indicating that dual substitution is an effective approach to improving its thermoelectric performance.

Abstract:Tetrahedrite has low lattice thermal conductivity because of the lone-pair electrons of Sb, which cause the Cu atoms to vibrate at a low frequency and high amplitude. The synthesis of tetrahedrite compounds by conventional melting methods requires a long-time reaction and annealing. However, a homogeneous and solid-state synthesis can be conducted in a short time using mechanical alloying (MA) because the volatilization of the constituent elements is inhibited and a subsequent heat treatment is not necessary. In this study, Bi-doped tetrahedrites Cu12Sb4-yBiyS13 (y = 0-0.4) were prepared by MA and hot pressing. X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that all specimens consisted of single-phase tetrahedrite. However, with increasing Bi content, skinnerite Cu3SbS3 was detected. The electrical conductivity increased and the Seebeck coefficient deceased with increasing Bi content as result of the substitution of Bi at Sb sites. In addition, the thermal conductivity increased as the Bi content increased because of the increase in electronic thermal conductivity. A high dimensionless figure of merit of 0.88 was obtained at 723 K for Cu12Sb3.9Bi0.1S13.
