Abstract:An improved device reproducibility in addition to the power conversion efficiency improvement can be achieved by a sequential deposited process for organic solar cells. The interpenetrating donor/acceptor interfaces and reduced surface roughness result in more uniform charge transfer, charge dissociation, and charge transport processes of layer‐by‐layer (LBL) films. Meanwhile, the LBL processed ternary devices exhibit broad third component tolerance. The reproducibility issue is impeding the progress of commercialization in organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices, as the difficulty in precise micro‐nano structure control in bulk heterojunction films, as well as the ineluctable fluctuations of molecular weight and polydispersity index in the synthetic process. Due to such intrinsic properties, the poor regioregularity significantly affects the batch‐to‐batch variation in performance of large‐area or integrative scattered OPV devices. Seeking alternatives as compensatory strategies is expected to reduce the inevitable problem of reproducibility in the fabrication process. Herein, the application potential of a pseudo‐bilayer structure in high‐performance OPVs, by using the solution‐processed method is thoroughly examined, and it is observed that the sequentially‐deposited solar cells enjoy improve device reproducibility in addition to the power conversion efficiency (PCE) enhancement. Importantly, such desirable reproducibility in layer‐by‐layer structures raised from the film formation process provides new opportunities in ternary OPV devices, and an improved PCE of 18.70% can be achieved in a PM6/L8‐BO:PY‐IT device, where the counterpart ternary cases exhibit a decreasing trend in performance with the increasing content of PY‐IT. This work illustrates the spatial effects of pseudo‐bilayer OPV devices in the aspect of charge carrier transport/transfer, morphology and film formation kinetics, and provides a novel perspective to overcome the barriers to commercialization.

Abstract:Forming an ideal bulk heterojunction (BHJ) morphology is a critical issue governing the photon to electron process in organic solar cells (OSCs). Complementary to the widely-used blend casting (BC) method for BHJ construction, sequential casting (SC) can also enable similar or even better morphology and device performance for OSCs. Here, BC and SC methods on three representative donor:acceptor (D:A) blends are utilized, that is, PM6:PC71 BM, PM6:IT-4F and PM6:L8-BO. Higher power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in all cases by taking advantage of beneficial morphology from SC processing are achieved, and a champion PCE of 18.86% (certified as 18.44%) based on the PM6:L8-BO blend is reached, representing the record value among binary OSCs. The observations on phase separation and vertical distribution inspire the proposal of the swelling-intercalation phase-separation model to interpret the morphology evolution during SC processing. Further, the vertical phase segregation is found to deliver an improvement of device performance via affecting the charge transport and collection processes, as evidenced by the D:A-ratio-dependent photovoltaic properties. Besides, OSCs based on SC processing show advantages on device photostability and upscale fabrication. This work demonstrates the versatility and efficacy of the SC method for BHJ-based OSCs.
Sequentially Processed Bulk‐Heterojunction‐Buried Structure for Efficient Organic Solar Cells with 500 nm Thickness

Abstract:Large‐area printing fabrication is a distinctive feature of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, the advance of upscalable fabrication is challenged by the thickness of organic active layers considering the importance of both exciton dissociation and charge collection. In this work, we introduce a bulk‐heterojunction‐buried (buried‐BHJ) structure by sequential deposition to realize efficient exciton dissociation and charge collection, thereby contributing to efficient OSCs with 500 nm thick active layers. The buried‐BHJ distributes donor and acceptor phases in the vertical direction as charge transport channels, while numerous BHJ interfaces are buried in each phase to facilitate exciton dissociation simultaneously. It is found that buried‐BHJ configurations possess efficient exciton dissociation and rapid charge transport, resulting in reduced recombination losses. In comparison with traditional structures, the buried‐BHJ structure displays a decent tolerance to film thickness. In particular, a power conversion efficiency of 16.0% is achieved with active layers at a thickness of 500 nm. Abstract:The precise tuning of the active layer morphology to improve organic solar cells (OSCs) efficiency remains a key issue in the field of organic photovoltaics. Herein, a new solution to the above problem is provided by using the dual‐solvent modulated polymer‐assisted sequential spin‐coating method. Herein, the sequential spin‐coated OSCs based on the D18‐Cl/Y6 system are prepared for the first time and an efficiency of 16.38% is obtained, similar to that of bulk heterojunction OSCs. On this basis, the performance is further improved by using a dual solvent to balance the dissolution and crystallization of D18‐Cl, separately optimizing the morphology of the donor layer and allowing the subsequent spin‐coated Y6 solution to penetrate uniformly into the D18‐Cl framework. After the dual‐solvent treatment, the D18‐Cl (CF + CB)/Y6‐based device obtains a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.33% and the D18‐Cl (THF + CB)/Y6‐based device achieves an even better PCE of 17.73%. It is worth noting that no post‐treatment is adopted here and after 2500 h of placement, the efficiency of the aforementioned devices is still 90% of the original. Thus, this work provides a simple method for tuning the film morphology to prepare efficient and stable devices, which is beneficial for future commercial production of OSCs. The use of the dual‐solvent‐assisted sequential spin‐coating method for precisely tuning active layer morphology to fabricate high efficient and stable organic solar cells is presented. Without any post‐treatment, D18‐Cl (THF + CB)/Y6‐based devices achieved an efficiency of up to 17.73%, thus facilitating the future commercial production of organic solar cells.

Abstract:Abstract High-efficiency organic solar cells are often achieved using toxic halogenated solvents and additives that are constrained in organic solar cells industry. Therefore, it is important to develop materials or processing methods that enabled highly efficient organic solar cells processed by halogen free solvents. In this paper, we report an innovative processing method named auxiliary sequential deposition that enables 19%-efficiency organic solar cells processed by halogen free solvents. Our auxiliary sequential deposition method is different from the conventional blend casting or sequential deposition methods in that it involves an additional casting of dithieno[3,2-b:2’,3’-d]thiophene between the sequential depositions of the donor (D18-Cl) and acceptor (L8-BO) layers. The auxiliary sequential deposition method enables dramatic performance enhancement from 15% to over 18% compared to the blend casting and sequential deposition methods. Furthermore, by incorporating a branched-chain-engineered acceptor called L8-BO-X, device performance can be boosted to over 19% due to increased intermolecular packing, representing top-tier values for green-solvent processed organic solar cells. Comprehensive morphological and time-resolved characterizations reveal that the superior blend morphology achieved through the auxiliary sequential deposition method promotes charge generation while simultaneously suppressing charge recombination. This research underscores the potential of the auxiliary sequential deposition method for fabricating highly efficient organic solar cells using environmentally friendly solvents.

Abstract:Abstract Despite the rapid progress of organic solar cells based on non-fullerene acceptors, simultaneously achieving high power conversion efficiency and long-term stability for commercialization requires sustainable research effort. Here, we demonstrate stable devices by integrating a wide bandgap electron-donating polymer (namely PTzBI-dF) and two acceptors (namely L8BO and Y6) that feature similar structures yet different thermal and morphological properties. The organic solar cell based on PTzBI-dF:L8BO:Y6 could achieve a promising efficiency of 18.26% in the conventional device structure. In the inverted structure, excellent long-term thermal stability over 1400 h under 85 °C continuous heating is obtained. The improved performance can be ascribed to suppressed charge recombination along with appropriate charge transport. We find that the morphological features in terms of crystalline coherence length of fresh and aged films can be gradually regulated by the weight ratio of L8BO:Y6. Additionally, the occurrence of melting point decrease and reduced enthalpy in PTzBI-dF:L8BO:Y6 films could prohibit the amorphous phase to cluster, and consequently overcome the energetic traps accumulation aroused by thermal stress, which is a critical issue in high efficiency non-fullerene acceptors-based devices. This work provides insight into understanding non-fullerene acceptors-based organic solar cells for improved efficiency and stability.

Abstract:Bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) non-fullerene organic solar cells prepared from sequentially deposited donor and acceptor layers (sq-BHJ) have recently been promising to be highly efficient, environmentally friendly, and compatible with large area and roll-to-toll fabrication. However, the related photophysics at donor-acceptor interface and the vertical heterogeneity of donor-acceptor distribution, critical for exciton dissociation and device performance, are largely unexplored. Herein, steady-state and time-resolved optical and electrical techniques are employed to characterize the interfacial trap states. Correlation with the luminescent efficiency of interfacial states and its non-radiative recombination, interfacial trap states are characterized to be about 50% more populated in the sq-BHJ than as-cast BHJ (c-BHJ), which probably limits the device voltage output. Cross-sectional energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy depth profiling directly vizualize the donor-acceptor vertical stratification with a precision of 1-2 nm. From the proposed "needle" model, the high exciton dissociation efficiency is rationalized. Our study highlights the promise of sequential deposition to fabricate efficient solar cells, and points towards improving the voltage output and overall device performance via eliminating interfacial trap states.

Abstract:Average visible transmittance (AVT) and power conversion efficiency (PCE) are two key parameters to evaluate performance of semitransparent organic solar cells (ST-OSCs). Reducing donor content can decrease light absorption in visible region and increase AVT values of ST-OSCs. However, minor donor phase is not sufficient for exciton generation, exciton dissociation and charge transport, and limits the PCEs of OSCs. In this work, ST-OSCs based on sequentially processed heterojunction (SHJ) structure were fabricated. Through sequentially spin-coating donor PM6 as the bottom layer and acceptor Y6 as the top layer, a better vertical phase distribution is formed in the SHJ structure compared with that in traditional bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structure. At a PM6:Y6 ratio of 1:2, the ST-OSCs based on SHJ structure show a PCE of 12.6% at an AVT of 25.4%, while the BHJ ST-OSCs show a PCE of 11.8% at an AVT of 22.9%.

Abstract:An organic solar cell (OSCs) containing double bulk heterojunction (BHJ) layers, namely, double‐BHJ OSCs is constructed via stamp transferring of low bandgap BHJ atop of mediate bandgap active layers. Such devices allow a large gain in photocurrent to be obtained due to enhanced photoharvest, without suffering much from the fill factor drop usually seen in thick‐layer‐based devices. Overall, double‐BHJ OSC with optimal ≈50 nm near‐infrared PDPP3T:PC71BM layer atop of ≈200 nm PTB7‐Th:PC71BM BHJ results in high power conversion efficiencies over 12%.

Abstract:A dual additives‐assisted layer‐by‐layer sequential deposition strategy is used to prepare D18/L8‐BO organic solar cells. DIM regulates D18 crystallization and DIO promotes L8‐BO diffusion into the D18 layer, forming a vertical composition distribution active layer with large donor/acceptor interpenetrated regions. The optimized PCE of 19.59% is achieved. The ideal vertical phase separation active layer morphology is crucial for the photoelectric conversion of organic solar cells. In this work, a layer‐by‐layer sequential deposition method is used to prepare D18/L8‐BO‐based organic solar cells and a dual additives strategy is adopted to construct the ideal active layer. Additive DIM regulates the crystallization of the D18 layer, and additive DIO induces L8‐BO to diffuse into the interior of the D18 layer to form a vertical composition distribution with large donor/acceptor interpenetrated regions. The improvement of active layer induced by DIM and DIO dual additives promote exciton generation and dissociation, shorten charge transfer distance, and improve carrier dynamics. With improved charge transport performance and suppressed carrier recombination, the short‐circuit current density and fill factor of the D18/L8‐BO quasi‐bulk heterojunction organic solar cells are improved simultaneously, and the power conversion efficiency is boosted significantly from 18.21% to 19.59%. Moreover, the improved photovoltaic performance is further verified in D18/Y6 and PM6/L8‐BO‐based organic solar cells, which implies the generalizability of the dual additive‐assisted layer‐by‐layer ‐sequential deposition method.

Abstract:Semitransparent organic solar cells (ST-OSCs) have been regarded as a promising candidate for building integrated photovoltaics. In general, most of the ST-OSCs are based on a bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structure in which the morphology of the BHJ film must be delicately optimized. In this work, we introduce a sequentially deposited bilayer structure into ST-OSCs by using a PTB7-Th/IEICO-4F combination. The adoption of the bilayer structure not only simplifies the device optimization, but it is also found that, as the donor and the acceptor are separately deposited, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of bilayer ST-OSCs can be improved by simply increasing the thickness of IEICO-4F, which has strong near infrared absorption but weak visible light absorption, without significantly affecting the average visible light transmittance (AVT) of the device. However, in the BHJ structure, the increase in BHJ film thickness unavoidably enhances the donor absorption in the visible light region, leading to a tradeoff between the PCE and AVT in BHJ-structured ST-OSCs. Eventually, the bilayer-structured device exhibits a better overall performance than the BHJ-structured device, e.g., a PCE of 8.5% for the bilayer structure versus a PCE of 8.1% for the BHJ structure with an AVT around 21%. Our findings indicate that the sequentially deposited bilayer structure, aside from its easy processing characteristics, also has great potential for preparing high-performance ST-OSCs.
Green‐Solvent‐Processed Organic Solar Cells with Approaching 20% Efficiency and Improved Photostability

Abstract:The development of high-efficiency organic solar cells (OSCs) processed from non-halogenated solvents is crucially important for their scale-up industry production. However, owing to the difficulty of regulating molecular aggregation, there is a huge efficiency gap between non-halogenated and halogenated solvent processed OSCs. Herein, we fabricate o-xylene processed OSCs with approaching 20% efficiency by incorporating of a trimeric guest acceptor named Tri-V into the PM6:L8-BO-X host blend. The incorporation of Tri-V effectively restricts the excessive aggregation of L8-BO-X, and optimizes the phase-separation morphology, which leads to mitigated trap density states, reduced energy loss and suppressed charge recombination. Consequently, the PM6:L8-BO-X:Tri-V-based device achieves an efficiency of 19.82%, representing the highest efficiency for green-solvent processed OSCs reported to date. Noticeably, with the addition of Tri-V, the ternary device shows an improved photostability than binary PM6:L8-BO-X-based device, and maintains 80% of the initial efficiency after continuous illumination for 1380 h. This work provides a feasible approach for fabricating high-efficiency, stable, eco-friendly OSCs, and sheds new light on the large-scale industrial production of OSCs.

Abstract:Organic/silicon hybrid solar cell has recently received intensive interest due to its simple and low-cost fabrication process, which could be potentially used in photovoltaics. However, the efficiency of organic/silicon solar cell needs further improvement. Here, we have introduced a WO3 thin layer between the Ag front electrodes and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS) film in the PEDOT:PSS/silicon solar cell to form a doping-free selective emitter (SE) structure. The carrier recombination is suppressed at the interface of silicon and electrodes, and meanwhile, the contact resistance between the Ag electrodes and PEDOT:PSS film is largely reduced. Therefore, the open-circuit voltage and fill factor of solar cell is significantly improved. As a result, the solar cell with a SE structure displays the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.65%, which is much higher than the one without a WO3 thin layer. Abstract:To broaden the absorption spectra, modify the bulk-heterojunction microstructure, and suppress morphological evolution of the host blend, we introduce an asymmetric small-molecule acceptor, L8-S9, with a narrow optical band gap and good molecular crystallinity, into the MPhS-C2:L8-BO binary system. The resulting ternary system achieved a champion power conversion efficiency of 18.10% and exhibited excellent light-soaking stability, with a T80 value of approximately 1,000 h.

Abstract:The most popular approach to fabricating organic solar cells (OSCs) is solution processing a mixture of donor (D) and acceptor (A) materials into an active layer with a bulk heterojunction (BHJ) nanostructure. Herein, it is demonstrated that the interdigitated heterojunction (IHJ) is a more suitable nanostructure of the active layer for high‐performance OSCs whereas it is a long standing challenge to realize well‐defined IHJ structures. In this study, a facile and versatile sequential solution processing method is developed to produce an IHJ nanostructure with power conversion efficiency reaching 18.74% (18.10% for BHJ the counterpart) by fabricating a donor film with nanopores created by a wax additive, sequentially casting the acceptor on top of infiltrating the nanopores. Compared to the BHJ, the IHJ structure with an interpillar distance within the exciton diffusion length can afford a large bulk D/A interface for efficient exciton dissociation with a minimized charge recombination while free electrons and holes can transport to the respective electrodes through more straightforward pathways, thus enhance performance. Furthermore, the D or A phase in the IHJ device contacts with only one electrode, which can prevent shunting between the anode and cathode and facilitate the industrial mass production of OSCs. An interdigitated bulk heterojunction structure of the active layer is developed by preforming the porous donor polymer film and then processing the acceptor on top, which yields an impressive high power conversion efficiency of 18.74% for polymer solar cells.
