Abstract:Despite the great success of organic photovoltaics in terms of device efficiency and stability at the laboratory scale, pressing demand for high-throughput and cost-effective solutions remains unresolved and rarely reported. Here we propose that a sequential-deposition, blade-coating approach using donor and acceptor materials can facilitate high-speed fabrication of photoactive layers while maintaining device performance. The sequential-deposition-processed blend and thickness of its designed PM6:T8 system can be optimized by the fine-tuning of the solution concentrations and coating speeds. We show that this strategy can be applied to a non-halogenated solvent and under high-humidity conditions. This high-speed approach is applicable to other non-fullerene photovoltaic systems and the slot-die coating technique. Techno-economic analysis suggests that this strategy can decrease the minimum sustainable price of module manufacturing. Overall, this work represents a step towards the scalable, cost-effective manufacturing of organic photovoltaics with both high performance and high throughput.

Abstract:Abstract High-efficiency organic solar cells are often achieved using toxic halogenated solvents and additives that are constrained in organic solar cells industry. Therefore, it is important to develop materials or processing methods that enabled highly efficient organic solar cells processed by halogen free solvents. In this paper, we report an innovative processing method named auxiliary sequential deposition that enables 19%-efficiency organic solar cells processed by halogen free solvents. Our auxiliary sequential deposition method is different from the conventional blend casting or sequential deposition methods in that it involves an additional casting of dithieno[3,2-b:2’,3’-d]thiophene between the sequential depositions of the donor (D18-Cl) and acceptor (L8-BO) layers. The auxiliary sequential deposition method enables dramatic performance enhancement from 15% to over 18% compared to the blend casting and sequential deposition methods. Furthermore, by incorporating a branched-chain-engineered acceptor called L8-BO-X, device performance can be boosted to over 19% due to increased intermolecular packing, representing top-tier values for green-solvent processed organic solar cells. Comprehensive morphological and time-resolved characterizations reveal that the superior blend morphology achieved through the auxiliary sequential deposition method promotes charge generation while simultaneously suppressing charge recombination. This research underscores the potential of the auxiliary sequential deposition method for fabricating highly efficient organic solar cells using environmentally friendly solvents.

Abstract:An improved device reproducibility in addition to the power conversion efficiency improvement can be achieved by a sequential deposited process for organic solar cells. The interpenetrating donor/acceptor interfaces and reduced surface roughness result in more uniform charge transfer, charge dissociation, and charge transport processes of layer‐by‐layer (LBL) films. Meanwhile, the LBL processed ternary devices exhibit broad third component tolerance. The reproducibility issue is impeding the progress of commercialization in organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices, as the difficulty in precise micro‐nano structure control in bulk heterojunction films, as well as the ineluctable fluctuations of molecular weight and polydispersity index in the synthetic process. Due to such intrinsic properties, the poor regioregularity significantly affects the batch‐to‐batch variation in performance of large‐area or integrative scattered OPV devices. Seeking alternatives as compensatory strategies is expected to reduce the inevitable problem of reproducibility in the fabrication process. Herein, the application potential of a pseudo‐bilayer structure in high‐performance OPVs, by using the solution‐processed method is thoroughly examined, and it is observed that the sequentially‐deposited solar cells enjoy improve device reproducibility in addition to the power conversion efficiency (PCE) enhancement. Importantly, such desirable reproducibility in layer‐by‐layer structures raised from the film formation process provides new opportunities in ternary OPV devices, and an improved PCE of 18.70% can be achieved in a PM6/L8‐BO:PY‐IT device, where the counterpart ternary cases exhibit a decreasing trend in performance with the increasing content of PY‐IT. This work illustrates the spatial effects of pseudo‐bilayer OPV devices in the aspect of charge carrier transport/transfer, morphology and film formation kinetics, and provides a novel perspective to overcome the barriers to commercialization.

Abstract:A swelling–penetration model is proposed to analyze the sequential deposition process in the fabrication of organic solar cells (OSCs). To achieve high‐performance OSCs, the critical steps involved in sequential deposition are carefully discussed. This work provides a systematic study of sequential deposition and highlights the potential of this method to achieve highly efficient and stable inverted OSCs. Sequential deposition (SD) is widely applied in the fabrication of high‐performance organic solar cells (OSCs). Nevertheless, the feasibility of SD in inverted photovoltaic devices is rarely mentioned. Moreover, the vertical component distribution in SD‐processed devices is still under debate. This study demonstrates that SD can achieve the entire bulk heterojunction morphology by precisely controlling the morphology of the active layer. To further promote photovoltaic performance, two post treatments, thermal annealing (TA) and solvent vapor annealing (SVA), are conducted to compare their effects on SD‐processed inverted photovoltaic devices. The results verify that SD can significantly enhance the thermal stability of devices. This work provides a valuable insight for systematically understanding SD processing and the preparation of stable inverted OSCs with superior performance.

Abstract:In this work, a highly efficient parallel connected tandem solar cell utilizing a nonfullerene acceptor is demonstrated. Guided by optical simulation, each of the active layer thicknesses of subcells are tuned to maximize its light trapping without spending intense effort to match photocurrent. Interestingly, a strong optical microcavity with dual oscillation centers is formed in a back subcell, which further enhances light absorption. The parallel tandem device shows an improved photon-to-electron response over the range between 450 and 800 nm, and a high short-circuit current density (J SC ) of 17.92 mA cm-2 . In addition, the subcells show high fill factors due to reduced recombination loss under diluted light intensity. These merits enable an overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of >10% for this tandem cell, which represents a ≈15% enhancement compared to the optimal single-junction device. Further application of the designed parallel tandem configuration to more efficient single-junction cells enable a PCE of >11%, which is the highest efficiency among all parallel connected organic solar cells (OSCs). This work stresses the importance of employing a parallel tandem configuration for achieving efficient light harvesting in nonfullerene-based OSCs. It provides a useful strategy for exploring the ultimate performance of organic solar cells.

Abstract:Bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) non-fullerene organic solar cells prepared from sequentially deposited donor and acceptor layers (sq-BHJ) have recently been promising to be highly efficient, environmentally friendly, and compatible with large area and roll-to-toll fabrication. However, the related photophysics at donor-acceptor interface and the vertical heterogeneity of donor-acceptor distribution, critical for exciton dissociation and device performance, are largely unexplored. Herein, steady-state and time-resolved optical and electrical techniques are employed to characterize the interfacial trap states. Correlation with the luminescent efficiency of interfacial states and its non-radiative recombination, interfacial trap states are characterized to be about 50% more populated in the sq-BHJ than as-cast BHJ (c-BHJ), which probably limits the device voltage output. Cross-sectional energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy depth profiling directly vizualize the donor-acceptor vertical stratification with a precision of 1-2 nm. From the proposed "needle" model, the high exciton dissociation efficiency is rationalized. Our study highlights the promise of sequential deposition to fabricate efficient solar cells, and points towards improving the voltage output and overall device performance via eliminating interfacial trap states.

Dual Additive‐Assisted Layer‐by‐Layer Processing for 19.59% Efficiency Quasi‐Bulk Heterojunction Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:A dual additives‐assisted layer‐by‐layer sequential deposition strategy is used to prepare D18/L8‐BO organic solar cells. DIM regulates D18 crystallization and DIO promotes L8‐BO diffusion into the D18 layer, forming a vertical composition distribution active layer with large donor/acceptor interpenetrated regions. The optimized PCE of 19.59% is achieved. The ideal vertical phase separation active layer morphology is crucial for the photoelectric conversion of organic solar cells. In this work, a layer‐by‐layer sequential deposition method is used to prepare D18/L8‐BO‐based organic solar cells and a dual additives strategy is adopted to construct the ideal active layer. Additive DIM regulates the crystallization of the D18 layer, and additive DIO induces L8‐BO to diffuse into the interior of the D18 layer to form a vertical composition distribution with large donor/acceptor interpenetrated regions. The improvement of active layer induced by DIM and DIO dual additives promote exciton generation and dissociation, shorten charge transfer distance, and improve carrier dynamics. With improved charge transport performance and suppressed carrier recombination, the short‐circuit current density and fill factor of the D18/L8‐BO quasi‐bulk heterojunction organic solar cells are improved simultaneously, and the power conversion efficiency is boosted significantly from 18.21% to 19.59%. Moreover, the improved photovoltaic performance is further verified in D18/Y6 and PM6/L8‐BO‐based organic solar cells, which implies the generalizability of the dual additive‐assisted layer‐by‐layer ‐sequential deposition method.

Abstract:Advances in small-molecule non-fullerene acceptors have led to increase in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells. Simultaneously, small molecules feature lower viscosity and better crystallization properties, which makes it easier to manipulate the molecular packing, film morphology, and device performance during the fabrication process. In this contribution, we fabricate all-small molecule solar cells based on BTR:Y6 with sequential annealing, and an enhanced PCE of 11.88% is achieved with J SC of 22.60 mA cm–2, V OC of 0.837 V, and FF of 62.79%. The morphological study reveals the concomitant of third-order lamellar and π-π stacking peaks and the improved BTR crystallite, indicating the improved crystallization properties. At the same time, the favorable film morphology with an interpenetrated network structure is also formed in blend films with sequential annealing. Thus, bimolecular and trap-assisted recombination can be effectively suppressed in the optimal solar cell devices. Such studies underline the significance of morphology control in fabricating highly efficient small-molecule solar cells.

Abstract:The performance of organic solar cells (OSCs) mainly depends on the morphology of the active layer. Traditional solution‐processed active layers have poor performance due to the random distribution of donor and acceptor materials during solution processing. In addition, halogenated solvents and additives widely used in traditional fabrication processes will have a huge impact on human health and the environment. Here, we proposed an all‐green solvent and additive combination strategy to assist the morphology control of active layer with sequential deposition (SD) technique. Ultimately, with adopting BV additive as well as ethyl alcohol (EA) treatment, PM6:Y6‐2BrO based devices yielding a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.3%, higher than those of the control device (13.24%) and the device solely with BV additives (13.62%). The result demonstrated the feasibility of SD technique to finely control the morphology of active layer in future all green industrial production. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:<p>Semitransparent organic photovoltaics (ST‐OPVs) have great potential for use in renewable energy technologies. In bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) ST‐OPVs, a compromise is necessary between the visible light transmittance (VLT) and the power conversion efficiency (PCE). A sequential deposition (SD) strategy that involves individually depositing a polymer donor layer (D) and a small‐molecule acceptor layer (A) as the active layer is presented; where molecular diffusion occurring at the interfacial region results in a pseudo p–i–n structure. PBDB‐T‐2F(D)/Y6(A) ST‐OPVs are fabricated with different active layer thicknesses—at 115 nm, the SD (D:A/75:40 nm) and BHJ devices (D:A/1:1.2 w) provide the champion PCE of 12.91% (VLT of 14.5%) and 12.77% (VLT of 13.4%), respectively; at 85 nm, the SD (D:A/45:40 nm) and BHJ devices (D:A/1:1.2 w) provide a PCE of 12.22% (VLT of 22.2%) and 11.23% (VLT of 16.6%), respectively. This trend indicates SD devices have larger PCE and VLT values than the BHJ devices at a given active layer thickness, and the enhancements of PCE and VLT values by the SD structures against the BHJ structures become more pronounced as the active layer thickness reduced. The SD strategy provides a new approach for achieving ST‐OPVs with both high efficiency and high transparency.</p>

Effective N‐Doping of Non‐Fullerene Acceptor via Sequential Deposition Enables High‐Efficiency Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:The sequential deposition (SD) doping strategy is adopted to control the dopant's location and achieve effective n‐doping of non‐fullerene acceptors in the SD films. Combining the advantage of vertical component distribution, the doped SD device exhibits superior charge transport properties with enhanced electron mobility, resulting in increased power conversion efficiency (19.55%). Charge transport in the active layer, which can be effectively modulated by molecular doping of organic semiconductors, significantly affects the photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, it is difficult to control the dopant distribution in the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) films, which hinders efficient doping in OSCs. Herein, an effective n‐doping strategy is developed via sequential deposition (SD) of D18 donor and doped acceptor. The favorable vertical component distribution in SD films helps to optimize carrier transport pathways. The SD method confines the n‐dopant N‐DMBI to the acceptor layer, allowing positive effects of molecular doping. Consequently, the doped SD device exhibits superior charge transport with suppressed charge recombination, lower trap density, and enhanced charge extraction compared to the undoped one, resulting in a high power conversion efficiency of 19.55% for D18/L8‐BO binary OSCs. In addition, the doping does not affect the thermal stability of the devices, with the doped SD device retaining over 90% of its initial efficiency after 1200 h of heating at 80 °C. The universality of the SD doping method is also verified in other non‐fullerene acceptor systems. These results demonstrate the great potential of SD doping strategy for building high‐performance OSCs with enhanced charge transport.

Abstract:All-small-molecule organic solar cell (ASM OSC) with an efficiency of up to 17.18% is demonstrated via combining layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition and solid additive methoxy-substituted graphdiyne (GOMe) treatment to manipulate active layer morphology. The rationally controlled morphology with ordered molecular stacking and vertical distribution has dual advantages, as the solid additive GOMe is a good molecular stacking regulator, and LbL configuration serves as a vertical charge-transporting highway with sufficient donor/acceptor interfaces, benefiting carrier generation and transport enhancement simultaneously. A remarkable fill factor of ∼77.31% is recorded, and an efficiency of 17.18% is the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) for ASM OSCs reported to date.

Abstract:Due to the complicated film formation kinetics, morphology control remains a major challenge for the development of efficient and stable all-polymer solar cells(all-PSCs). To overcome this obstacle, the sequential deposition method is used to fabricate the photoactive layers of all-PSCs comprising a polymer donor PTzBI-oF and a polymer acceptor PS1. The film morphology can be manipulated by incorporating amounts of a dibenzyl ether additive into the PS1 layer. Detailed morphology investigations by grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering and a transmission electron microscope reveal that the combination merits of sequential deposition and DBE additive can render favorable crystalline properties as well as phase separation for PTzBI-oF:PS1 blends. Consequently, the optimized all-PSCs delivered an enhanced power conversion efficiency(PCE) of 15.21%along with improved carrier extraction and suppressed charge recombination. More importantly, the optimized all-PSCs remain over 90% of their initial PCEs under continuous thermal stress at 65 °C for over 500 h. This work validates that control over microstructure morphology via a sequential deposition process is a promising strategy for fabricating highly efficient and stable all-PSCs.

Abstract:Abstract In non-fullerene organic solar cells, the long-range structure ordering induced by end-group π–π stacking of fused-ring non-fullerene acceptors is considered as the critical factor in realizing efficient charge transport and high power conversion efficiency. Here, we demonstrate that side-chain engineering of non-fullerene acceptors could drive the fused-ring backbone assembly from a π–π stacking mode to an intermixed packing mode, and to a non-stacking mode to refine its solid-state properties. Different from the above-mentioned understanding, we find that close atom contacts in a non-stacking mode can form efficient charge transport pathway through close side atom interactions. The intermixed solid-state packing motif in active layers could enable organic solar cells with superior efficiency and reduced non-radiative recombination loss compared with devices based on molecules with the classic end-group π–π stacking mode. Our observations open a new avenue in material design that endows better photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:Recently, the ternary blend method has been successfully applied to nonfullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) and enhanced the device performance by utilizing complementary optical absorption. Here we demonstrate the two polymer donors and one small-molecule acceptor (i.e., 2D/1A) strategy to finely regulate the blend film morphology in fullerene-free OSCs. One crystalline polymer donor, PfEBT4T-20D, can act as an effective morphology regulator for a benchmark blend of PTB7-Th and ITIC, leading to appropriate phase-separated morphology, suppressed charge recombination, efficient charge transport and high carrier mobility. The resulting solvent additive- and annealing-free fabricated bulk-heterojunction OSCs show the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.22% with a significant increase of fill factor compared to their binary counterparts. Importantly, such ternary OSCs when processed under ambient condition retain excellent device performance with a PCE of 7.57%, indicative of good air-stability.

Abstract:With the continuous breakthrough of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) efficiency, their practical applications are on the agenda. However, the thickness tolerance and upscaling in recently reported high‐efficiency devices remains challenging. In this work, the multi‐phase morphology and desired carrier behaviors were realized by utilizing the quaternary strategy. Notably, the exciton separation, carrier mobility, and carrier lifetime are enhanced significantly, the carrier recombination and the energy loss (Eloss) is reduced, thus beneficial for the higher short‐circuit density (JSC), fill factor (FF) and open‐circuit voltage (VOC) of the quaternary system. Moreover, the intermixing‐phase size was optimized, favorable for constructing the thick‐film and large‐area devices. Finally, the device with 110 nm thick active layer shows an outstanding PCE of 19.32% (certified 19.35%). Furthermore, the large‐area (1.05 cm2 and 72.25 cm2) devices with 110 nm thickness present PCEs of 18.25% and 12.20%, and the device with 305 nm thick film (0.0473 cm2) delivers a PCE of 17.55%, which are among the highest values reported. Our work demonstrates the potential of quaternary strategy for large‐area and thick‐film OPVs and promotes the practical application of OPV in the future. This article is protected by copyright.
