Abstract:Cu-doped TiO2 nanoparticles are prepared and used as semiconductor materials of photoanode to improve the performance of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). UV–Vis spectroscopy and variable temperature spectroelectrochemistry study are used to characterize the influence of copper dopant with different concentrations on the band gap energies of TiO2 nanoparticles. The prepared Cu-doped TiO2 semiconductor has avoided the formation of CuO during hydrothermal process and lowered the conduction band position of TiO2, which contribute to increase the short circuit current density of DSSCs. At the optimum Cu concentration of 1.0at.%, the short circuit current density increased from 12.54 to 14.98mAcm−2, full sun solar power conversion efficiencies increased from 5.58% up to 6.71% as compared to the blank DSSC. This showed that the presence of copper in DSSCs leads to improvements of up to 20% in the conversion efficiency of DSSCs.

Abstract:Graphene has attracted a lot of attention because of its unique optical, thermal, mechanical and electrical properties. In this study, the effect of graphene on the performance of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was investigated by constructing TiO2 photoanodes with a gradient graphene content. After the construction of photoanodes with a gradient graphene content, the DSSCs displayed a higher dye loading amount, lower internal resistances, lower electron recombination rate and faster electron transport rate, which resulted in high open circuit voltage and current density. Under the optimum conditions, the DSSC exhibited a V-oc of 0.72 V, a J(sc) of 17.11 mA cm(-2), a FF of 0.63, and an energy conversion efficiency (eta) of 7.71%, indicating a 41% increase in eta than that of the DSSC based on a pure TiO2 photoanode, which gives a V-oc of 0.69 V, a J(sc) of 12.63 mA cm(-2), a FF of 0.62, and an h value of 5.45%. The construction of TiO2 photoanodes with a gradient graphene content could really enhance the efficiency of DSSCs by improving the dye loading amount and enhancing the electron bridge effect of graphene from TiO2 to the FTO, which lowered the electron recombination rate and accelerated the electron transport rate.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a simple approach of self-assembled process to form a very smooth and compacted TiO2 underlayer film from ultrafine titanium oxide (TiO2) nanocrystals with dimension of 4 nm for improving the electrical properties and device performances of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Because the TiO2 film self-assembles by simply casting the TiO2 on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate, it can save a lot of materials in the process. As compared with control DSSC without the self-assembled TiO2 (SA-TiO2) layer, short-circuit current density (J(sc)) improves from 14.9 mA/cm(2) for control DSSC to 17.3 mA/cm(2) for masked DSSC with the SA-TiO2 layer. With the very smooth SA-TiO2 layer, the power conversion efficiency is enhanced from 8.22% (control) to 9.35% for the DSSCs with mask and from 9.79% (control) to 11.87% for the DSSCs without mask. To explain the improvement, we have studied the optical properties, morphology, and workfunction of the SA-TiO2 layer on FTO substrate as well as the impedance spectrum of DSSCs. Importantly, we find that the SA-TiO2 layers have better morphology, uniformity, and contact with FTO electrode, increased workfunction and optical transmission, as well as reduced charge recombination at the contact of FTO substrate contributing to the improved device performances. Consequently, our results show that the simple self-assembly of TiO2 ultrafine nanocrystals forms a very good electron extraction layer with both improved optical and electrical properties for enhancing performances of DSSCs.
Enhancing Efficiency of Dye Sensitized Solar Cells by Coinage Metal Doping of Cyanidin-Silver Trimer Hybrids at TiO2 Support Based on Theoretical Study

Abstract:Identification of a natural-based sensitizer with optimal stability and efficiency for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) application remains a challenging task. Previously, we proposed a new class of sensitizers based on bio-nano hybrids. These systems composed of natural cyanidin dyes interacting with silver nanoclusters (NCs) have demonstrated enhanced opto-electronic and photovoltaic properties. In this study, we explore the doping of silver nanocluster within a cyanidin-Ag3 hybrid employing Density Functional Theory (DFT) and its time-dependent counterpart (TDDFT). Specifically, we investigate the influence of coinage metal atoms (Au and Cu) on the properties of the cyanidin-Ag3 system. Our findings suggest that cyanidin-Ag2Au and cyanidin-AgAuCu emerge as the most promising candidates for improved light harvesting efficiency, increased two-photon absorption, and strong coupling to the TiO2 surface. These theoretical predictions suggest the viability of replacing larger silver NCs with heterometallic trimers such as Ag2Au or AgAuCu, presenting new avenues for utilizing bio-nano hybrids at the surface for DSSC application.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are low-cost solar cells belonging to the thin-film photovoltaic cell type. In this study, we studied the photovoltaic performances of DSSCs based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanofibers (NFs) containing silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) under low illumination. We used the sol-gel method with the electrospinning technique to prepare the TiO2 NFs containing Ag NPs. Herein, we used two ways to add TiO2/Ag NFs to modify the photoelectrode successfully and enhance the performance of DSSCs. One way was that the TiO2/Ag NFs were mixed with pristine TiO2; the other way was that the TiO2/Ag NFs were seeded beside the TiO2 colloid layer as an additional layer on the photoelectrode of the DSSC. According to this experiment, the photovoltaic conversion efficiency of the DSSC which had TiO2/Ag NF seeded as an additional layer on the photoelectrode (5.13%) was increased by 28% compared to the DSSC without the photoelectrode modification (3.99%). This was due to the suppression of electron recombination and the more effective utilization of the light radiation by adding the TiO2/Ag NFs. Because of the good conductivity of Ag, the electrons were quickly transported and electron recombination was reduced. In addition, the photovoltaic conversion efficiency of the DSSC which had TiO2/Ag NF seeded as an additional layer on the photoelectrode increased from 5.13% to 6.23% during the decrease in illumination from 100 mW/cm2 to 30 mW/cm2; however, its photovoltaic conversion efficiency decreased to 5.31% when the illumination was lowered to 10 mW/cm2.

Abstract:This work is centered on the study of the internal electrochemical variables of a dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC), using characterization techniques such as: electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and numerical modeling of the process, in order to obtain a deeper knowledge of the internal behavior of the solar cell. In this way, it was possible to evaluate loss of recombination, transportation and loss for resistance in series as a function of the intensity of illumination, as well as identifying degradation mechanisms. The experimental development consists in the construction, characterization and modeling of DSSC based on the nanometric titanium dioxide semiconductor. Three different behaviors were studied; (1) Effect of different forms of deposits of titanium oxide nanostructures, (2) evaluation of the influence of solvents (acetonitrile, ionic liquid) and (3) observing the behavior of additives (4-tert-butylpiridine 96%, Lithium), with the intention of determine which of them sensitizes most efficiently the titanium dioxide. The results indicate that the variables studied show a complex system in which optimal interaction between components, semiconductor, dye and electrolyte must be conducted for a good performance and stability.

Abstract:The Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC) is still inefficient. Because low efficiency is caused by electron recombination, this study reduced it by the electrodeposition of Ag metal against TiO2. XRD was used to determine the crystal structure, size, and effect of Ag electrodeposition on TiO2. SEM-EDS was used to investigate the surface morphology and the presence of Ag metal in the TiO2-Ag layer. Anthocyanins were used as dyes. To improve thermal stability and achieve a bathochromic effect, the anthocyanin used was co-pigmented with salicylic acid. The anthocyanin extract used in this study was obtained from the red grape peel (Vitis Vinifera), jengkol peel (Pithecellobium jiringa), senduduk fruit (Melastoma malabathricum L), and mangosteen peel (Garcinia Mangostana L). The dyes were identified using UV-Vis and FTIR. The electrical properties of the resulting DSSC were measured using a multi-meter. According to this study, the electrodeposition of Ag on the TiO2 layer could improve DSSC efficiency. The highest efficiency was achieved in DSSC with TiO2-Ag and co-pigmented dye using mangosteen peel as the dye source

Abstract:In this study, the dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) were assembled by using natural dyes extracted from roselle and red phoenix as sensitizer coated fluorine-doped tin dioxide substrate (FTO) plate used a counter electrode for nanocrystalline TiO2. We investigated the formation of modified titanium dioxide on dye-sensitized solar cells by simultaneous dyeing with supercritical carbon dioxide fluid. The photoelectrode is made of compact layer and scattering layer. Supercritical carbon dioxide fluid extracted natural dyestuff and synchronous dyed photoelectric. The photoelectric conversion efficiency is the best at the dyeing parameters of 3000 psi, 50 oC, and 30 minutes. Experimental results show that adding a scattering layer to the compact layer can improve the conversion efficiency. SEM can observe that the polyethylene glycol-added scattering layer has more pore structures in which improves the electrode’s ability to capture sunlight. The conversion efficiency of 0.13% can be obtained by using 9:1 mixed dyes of anthocyanin and chlorophyll. The photoelectric conversion efficiency with the P25/R-type/PEG scattering layer is about 30% higher than that of a single compact layer. Finally the paper proposes a schematic diagram of the dye-sensitized solar cell.

Abstract:The TiO2 and Sb-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by the hydrothermal method and were characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on 1mol% Sb-doped TiO2 electrode achieved 8.13%, which is noticeably higher than that of the undoped DSSCs (7.36%). The improvement of the performance of Sb-doped DSSCs was attribute to the positive shift of the conduction band, which is beneficial to electron injection efficiency from the LUMO of the dye to the TiO2 conduction band. Intensity-modulated photocurrent and photovolatage spectroscopic analysis reveals that the electron transport and recombination have influence on the performance of the DSSCs.

Abstract:Tin oxide is a promising candidate for the replacement of titanium dioxide in dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), due to its excellent electron transport properties. The performance of TiO2‐based DSSCs can be improved either by modifying the morphology of SnO2 nanostructures, or by doping. Here, we investigate the influence of different dopants (Mg, Zn, and Ag) to SnO2 anode on the DSSC performance. We found that the addition of the dopant affects not only the electron lifetime, but also the dye adsorption as well. The best performance was obtained for zinc doped SnO2 anodes, with the power conversion efficiency of 3.4%.

Sn-Doped TiO2 Photoanode for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:A series of Sn-doped TiO2 with Sn content ranging from 0.25 to 1 mol % were successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal method, and its performance as the photoanode of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was investigated. TEM and XRD results indicate that the doping has no effect on the morphology and the crystal form of TiO2. The shift of XRD peaks observed at higher angle and the XPS results indicate Sn4+ ions incorporation into the TiO2 lattice. The flatband potential of Sn-TiO2 films shifts from -0.505 V (vs SCE) to -0.55 V with increasing Sn content from 0 to 1 mol at. %, which is beneficial to the increase of V-oc. The higher transfer rate of electrons in the Sn-doped TiO2 films than in the undoped TiO2 films is confirmed by IMPS measurements, which is favorable to the higher J(sc). IMVS and EIS measurements indicate that the charge recombination increases with increasing Sn doping content. Taking these factors, the optimum efficiency of 8.31% was found at 0.5 mol % Sn-doped TiO2 based DSSCs, which gave an efficiency improved by 12.1% compared with that of the cells based on pure TiO2 (7.45%). This work shows that Sn-doped TiO2 is a most interesting material and has good potential for application in photoenergy conversion devices.

Abstract:By measuring the photo-voltage and photo-current transients, the charge recombination and transporting dynamics in a series of zinc-doped titania based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) were investigated. Based on the electron recombination and charge collection time constants, zinc-doping effects to the conduction band levels and the trap state distribution of anode were found. The results show that the zinc-doping enhanced the open-circuit voltage of DSCs by raising the conduction band levels and elongating the electron recombination time constants.

Abstract:This study addresses the growing need for energy worldwide and highlights the necessity of switching to sustainable options like dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), which are well known for their affordability, ease of use, and competitive efficiency. Utilizing the sol–gel method, we synthesized diverse samples, including pristine TiO 2 , Cd-doped TiO 2 , and their heterostructures (TiO 2 @Cd–TiO 2 , Cd–TiO 2 @TiO 2 ). A comprehensive evaluation encompassed structural, morphological, optical properties, and photovoltaic behavior through techniques like XRD, SEM, and UV–visible spectroscopy. Structural analysis highlighted the development of the anatase phase in all samples. The particles exhibited spherical grains, and heterostructures displayed dispersed particles with large sizes, enhancing electronic transport and dye absorption for efficient DSSCs. Cd–TiO 2 @TiO 2 exhibits the shortest bandgap (3.24 eV). Notably, Cd–TiO 2 @TiO 2 demonstrated favorable photovoltaic characteristics, including J sc (8.65 ± 0.2 mA -cm 2 ), V oc (0.78 ± 0.2 V), FF (0.718 ± 0.1), and efficiency (4.848 ± 0.5). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of TiO 2 @Cd–TiO 2 and Cd–TiO 2 @TiO 2 DSSCs unveiled distinct semicircles, indicating reduced charge transfer resistance and enhanced efficiency compared to TiO 2 -only DSSCs. This research contributes vital insights for advancing sustainable and efficient solar cell technologies.

Abstract:Recently, the study of new DSSC structures such as photoanodes, electrolytes, and counter electrodes (CE) have gained the attention of researchers. Combining these features allows DSSC to have a flexible and versatile way of working. Titanium dioxide-graphene (TiO 2 -G) nanocomposite containing 3 wt % graphene (G) was successfully fabricated and employed as the photoanode for the fabrication of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). Agarose (3 wt %) together with potassium iodide (KI) were prepared as gel electrolytes and polyaniline-graphene oxide (PANI-GO) served as the counter electrode (CE). In UV–visible spectroscopy, doping of graphene on TiO 2 led to a remarkable reduction of the band gap energy from 3.0 eV (TiO 2 ) to 2.4 eV (TiO 2 -G). The presence of agarose in the KI solution facilitated the creation of fine channels, promoting ionic transfer in electrolytes, as revealed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Moreover, the current-voltage (I–V) curve for TiO 2 -G/3 wt % agarose gel electrolyte/PANI-GO demonstrated a power conversion efficiency (PCE) value of 1.1324% with optimal values for short circuit current density (J SC ), open circuit voltage (V OC ), and fill factor (FF) of 34.48 mA/cm 2 , 0.1105 V, and 0.2972, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) illustrated redox potential occurrences at −0.2 V and +0.2 V, corresponding to oxidation and reduction processes, confirming the chemical stability of DSSC. The system demonstrated stability after 10 cycles, maintaining consistent current (μA) and voltage (V) patterns even after 20 cycles. These results demonstrate the efficient and cost-effective DSSC system's capacity to maintain stability and guarantee consistent energy conversion.

Abstract:A composite TiO2 photoelectrode structure is explored to optimize the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) properties. The composite TiO2 photoanodes consist of two nanoparticular TiO2 layers with different size and thickness. The impact of film thickness on the performance of DSSCs was also investigated. In the optimized composite photoelectrode structure with large sized TiO2 nanoparticle as light scattering layer, the significantly improved performance of DSSC with 25% increase of current density and 13.1% increase of conversion efficiency was experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:Anatase titanium dioxide nanowire arrays were prepared by hydrothermally oxidizing titanium foils in aqueous alkali and transferred onto fluorinated tin oxide (FTO) glass for use as the photoanodes of front side illuminated dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement was applied to compare the electron transport and recombination properties of DSCs using TiO2 nanowire films and TiO2 nanoparticle films as photoanodes. It was found that the nanowire array films possess smaller electron transport resistance (R t) and larger electron diffusion length (L e) in the photoanodes, suggesting that the nanowire arrays can enhance the electron transport rate and have a potential to improve the charge collection efficiency of DSCs.

Abstract:Solar energy stands out as a promising alternative to traditional energy sources, with dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) proving to be a highly effective means of harnessing this renewable energy. However, recent studies highlight the efficacy of employing a photoanode with mixed phases of Titanium Dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles in DSSCs. The conventional approach to preparing mixed-phase TiO 2 involves a time-consuming process with high-temperature annealing. In the present work, a novel microwave-assisted solvothermal synthesis of mixed-phase TiO 2 , which significantly reduces the preparation time has been reported. Moreover, we have enhanced device performance by co-sensitizing carbon dots (CDs) with various natural dyes and synthetic dye. The device prepared using CDs co-sensitized with Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. rubra exhibited comparable efficiency (3.66%) with that obtained for N719-sensitized DSSC (3.85%). Further improvement in efficiency (4.81%) was obtained on sensitizing CDs with N719 dye. The comprehensive analysis of device performance using these innovative methods represents a noteworthy advancement in the realm of solar energy harvesting, with unexplored possibilities that could shape the future of sustainable energy solutions.
