Abstract:Gibbsite precipitation from sodium aluminate solution was intensified by adding mixed industrial and self-prepared active seeds, and its mechanism was researched preliminarily. The interfacial properties of seed/aluminate solution were determined for separate industrial and active seed. Contact angles of seed/aluminate solution and the specific surface area of seeds were respectively measured by sessile drop and BET method, and the morphology and particle size of precipitates were recorded by SEM and laser diffraction. The results show that, compared with the industrial seed, the active seed has a better wettability, lower interfacial tension, and larger specific surface area, being conducive to enhancing gibbsite precipitation from sodium aluminate solution. SEM analysis of the precipitates indicates that the embedment and accumulation/agglomeration of extremely fine particles on the surface of coarse industrial seed can effectively control the content of fine particles in the precipitation product. With extra 3.1–4.6 g/L active seed, the gibbsite precipitation ratio was increased by 3.23%–3.92%. Moreover, the mass percentage of particles <45 μm in precipitation product has even a slight decrease compared with that for the traditional precipitation product or of the industrial seed itself. The result presented is favorable to developing an intensified gibbsite precipitation process for commercial alumina manufacture.

Abstract:Micromechanism of Bayer seeds precipitation intensified from caustic aluminate solutions was discussed.Mixed additives by modified positive polyacrylamide and sodium polyacrylate were added in the caustic aluminate solutions,the effects of the mass ratio of mixed additives,concentration and the added time were studied.After 8 h,the aluminum hydroxide crystals were measured by scanning electron microscopy.The results show that the intensified decomposition processings including all the Al(OH)~-_4 diffusing into the surfaces of seeds crystals,OH~-diffusing into the sodium aluminate solution and Al(OH)~-_4 changing into Al(OH)_3 by chemical reactions are accelerated.In contrast to no additives, the better processing parameters are modified with positive polyacrylamide and sodium polyacrylate with mass ratio of 5∶1,mass concentration of 1.56×10~(-4) g/L and added in the seeds before precipitation.With the mixed additives added,surplus secondary nucleation is formed on the surfaces of seeds,and fallen off for stirring or adsorbing each other into new large seeds,so the second nucleation can be accelerated.
Precipitation Rate and Particle Size Distribution of Seeded Precipitation Proceeding in Sodium and Potassium Aluminate Solutions

Abstract:The precipitation rate and particle size distribution(PSD)for pure sodium aluminate solution and potassium aluminate solutions were investigated. The XRD, SEM and TG/DTG curves were used to study the products of sodium aluminate solution and potassium aluminate solution. The results show that the precipitation rate of potassium aluminate solution is larger than that of sodium aluminate solution, and the rate increases with the decrease of (original) α_k of caustic aluminate solution under the same conditions. There are dramatic discrepancies of PSD during the same seeded precipitation condition between sodium aluminate solution and potassium aluminate solution. The XRD patterns of products show that the crystals of potassium aluminate solution have better crystallinity than that of sodium aluminate solution, but the TG/DTG curves of products of sodium aluminate solution and potassium aluminate solution have no obvious difference. These discrepancies are similar in solutions of different α_k(1.45, 1.55, 1.65). It is considered that the difference of nucleation rate between sodium aluminate solution and potassium aluminate solution is the reason for the discrepancy of precipitation rate and PSD during seeded precipitation.

Abstract:This paper presents the influence of surfactant PEG3000 on the process of seeded precipitation from caustic aluminate solutions.When the additive amount of PEG3000 is 140 mg·L~(-1),the surfactant can enlarge the adsorption on the surface of Al(OH)_3,decrease the surface tension of caustic aluminate solutions,enhance the precipitation yield about 8%,intensify the process of seeded precipitation from caustic aluminate solutions effectually.

Abstract:Aiming at seeded precipitation of aluminate solution with high caustic ratio(αk>2.4), corresponding to the late period of seeded precipitation, the influence of different types of seed on precipitation ratio was explained with respect to solution structure in the interface of seed and the evolution of Al(OH)3 growth units in this layer. The effects of solid content and seed size on agglomeration were determined by calculating the particle number of product. The results imply that the solution structure in the interface of seed imposes a notable significance on the process in the late period of seeded precipitation. Agglomeration still exists in this period. However, the agglomeration bodies break in the case of prolonging precipitation due to the mechanical effect, which results in the increase of particle number.

Abstract:The changes of aluminate ions in the Bayer seeded precipitation process were analyzed by the semi-quantitative FTIR analytical method and the ion structure of attached-liquid on the seed surface was determined using ATR-FTIR in order to investigate the gibbsite precipitation mechanism from sodium aluminate solution. The results show that the concentration of tetrahedral aluminate ions corresponding to the bands at 720cm−1 and 880cm−1 declines remarkably as the precipitation process proceeds, while the concentration of Al2O(OH)62− corresponding to the band at about 550cm−1 increases slightly, suggesting that the gibbsite precipitation from sodium aluminate solution was mainly caused by the tetrahedral aluminate ions. The concentration of tetrahedral aluminate ions in the spent liquor declines with time, resulting in a reduction of the driving force of cluster formation of Al(OH)4−, which in turn leads to the reduction of the cluster size. Thus the clusters formed by Al(OH)4− could not get to the critical size to transform into Al(OH)3 and consequently dissolve in the solution. So the rate of nucleation and growth is very slow in the late period of seeded precipitation and the content of Al(OH)4− in the attached-liquid on the aluminum trihydroxide surface remains constant.

Abstract:New methods were explored to intensify the precipitation of gibbsite from seeded caustic sodium aluminate liquor: gibbsite crystal seed was activated by boiling in distilled water and 15-crown-5-ether was used as additive in this investigation. Both methods promoted precipitation under selected conditions. The stability of pure sodium aluminate solution decreases in the presence of a high concentration of 15-crown-5-ether, this effect was examined using 27Al NMR. Particle size analyses showed that the product became finer when either intensifying method was introduced. The intensifying mechanism was proposed as follows: desorption of organic contaminants and adsorption of additive molecules primarily take place on the surface of large seed particles where active sites are denser, thus precipitation is promoted; available supersaturation for the small seed particle decreases as the large seeds grow rapidly thereby decreasing agglomeration giving a finer product. Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) images of samples support this mechanism.

Abstract:The eta-t curve is derived from the dynamic equation of seeded precipitation. The curve has the characteristic of a hyperbolic function and the experimental results conform to the characteristics of the curve. The eta-t curve indicates that the precipitation ratio rises rapidly at the preliminary stage of precipitation, the precipitation ratio ascends slowly at middle stage of precipitation and the precipitation ratio increases more slowly at the final stage of precipitation. On the basis of this character of the eta-t curve and the technology features of seeded precipitation in producing sandy alumina in Chinese alumina plants, various parameters are determined in the precipitation process as a result of intermediate lowering of temperature.
Study on the Particle Size Distribution in Seeded Precipitation of Sodium and Potassium Aluminate Solutions

Abstract:The particle size distribution(PSD)in pure sodium or potassium aluminate solution with =5.16 mol/L,α_k=1.45,1.55 and 1.65,respectively,are investigated with a batch reactor at 52.5℃. The results show that there are some discrepancies between the PSD curves of sodium and potassium aluminate solution on the same seeded precipitation conditions. The position of main distribution peak for potassium aluminate solutions is always higher than that for sodium aluminate solution. The apparent difference lies in the tower peak of PSD from 10～44.774μm for potassium aluminate solution, while no tower peaks of PSD curve for sodium aluminate solution after 16h precipitation . The discrepancy of PSD is similar for different sodium and potassium aluminate solution with α_k equal to 1.45,1.55 and 1.65.
A Kind Of Activity Seed Used For The Precipitation Of The Sodium-Aluminate Liquor

Abstract:The activity of seed is one of the most important factors affecting the precipitation of sodium-aluminate liquor. To increase the activity of seed, the industrial aluminum hydroxide is soaked by sulfuric acid, and then used as the seed of the precipitation of sodium aluminate. It is demonstrated that this kind of seed has the ability to promote the precipitation. The physical properties of the industrial Al(OH)(3) and the seed soaked by sulfuric acid solution are measured, and their appearance features are analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. It is found that the reason raising the seed's activity is the increase of the amount of acid matrix on the seed's surface.

Abstract:The effects of a nonionic surfactant on the seeded precipitation rate of sodium aluminate solution, the particle size and morphology of the products were studied. The results show that when the added amount of the nonionic surfactant ranges from 100 mg/L to 150 mg/L, the seeded precipitation rate can be raised by about 6%, and its accelerating effects on the agglomeration of Al(OH)3 crystals and inhibiting secondary nucleation are also found in terms of the particle size distribution and SEM, which results in the increase of the average radius of products by 16 μm. The mechanism of the surfactant behavior was discussed. The results indicate that the Zeta potential of Al(OH)3 particle is changed and surface tension of sodium aluminate solution decreases by 20-30 mN/m with the addition of surfactant, which makes the stability of sodium aluminate solution greatly decline. Therefore, the nonionic surfactant can effectively intensify the seeded precipitation process of sodium aluminate solution.
Effect of Ethers Additive B35 on Seeded Precipitation of Sodium Aluminate Solution

Abstract:The effect of ethers additive B35 on the seeded precipitation of sodium aluminate solution was investigated,the structure of the sodium aluminate solution was analyzed by FTIR,the zeta potential of the solid surface of Al(OH)3 particles was measured by micro-electrophoresis.The results show that proper dosage of ethers additive can improve the seeded precipitation process of sodium aluminate solution.The precipitation rate can be raised by 4% when the B35 dosage is 500 mg/L.The change of the solution structure is due to the enhancement of seeded precipitation process by adding the additive rather than the effect of the additive itself.Zeta potential of solid surface of Al(OH)3 particles increases significantly when adding B35,the characteristic adsorption occurs between Al(OH)3 particles and the additive.This characteristic adsorption decreases the wet angle of the Al(OH)3 surface,reduces the solid-liquid interfacial tension force and ultimately intensifies the seeded precipitation process of sodium aluminate solution.In addition,there is another reason for enhancing precipitation that the equilibrium solubility of coarse particles is relatively smaller than that of the fine particles in sodium aluminate solution,and thus increases the driving force of precipitation process,and the average particle size of products increases by about 10 μm through adding ethers B35.
Influence of Anion Surfactant PG20 and WG12 on the Seeded Precipitation of Synthetic Sodium Aluminate Solution

Abstract:Influences of anion surfactant PG20 and WG12 on the seeded precipitation rate of synthetic sodium aluminate solution were studied by comparison experiments,and its mechanism was preliminarily discussed.Results show that PG20 and WG12 were all effective ways to increase the seeded precipitation rate of synthetic sodium aluminate solution,the influence of WG12 on the seeded precipitation rate was more obvious;and with the increase of the concentration,it would enhance the effects of the increase on the seeded precipitation rate.When the concentration of PG20 and WG12 was 400 mg/L,the seeded precipitation rate could increase by 2.95% and 4.21%. PG20 and WG12 had the different effects on the product particle size.WG12 could significantly increase the product granularity,the value of one of the median granularity(d50)was 98.088 μm.Compared with the blank sample,the value of the median granularity(d50)was 48.983 μm.PG20 decreased the product granularity,and the value of the median granularity(d50)was 34.138 μm.PG20 and WG12 would obviously decrease the surface tension of sodium aluminate solution.

Abstract:The effect of non-ionic surfactant-polypropylene glycol(PPG) on the seed precipitation of sodium aluminate solution has been investigated.Experiments show that polypropylene glycol can improve the seed precipitation of sodium aluminate solution and obviously increase the volume percentage of +45μm particles of Al(OH)3 products.The dosage of polypropylene glycol,experimental temperature,the size of seeds,the mass ratio of seeds(Ks) and molecular ratio(αk) can obviously affect the seed precipitation of sodium aluminate solution.Low dosage of additive,high temperature,fine seeds,median mass ratio of seeds and low molecular ratio are more propitious to the improvement of the seed precipitation.X-ray diffraction(XRD) shows that the structure of Al(OH)3 products remains the same with or without polypropylene glycol.

Abstract:Different consolidation methods of the decomposition of caustic Aluminate solutions with seeds are summarized in this article:optimization of decomposition conditions in industry; activation the seeds; precipitation with appropriate additives to rise the decomposition rates and increase the coarse particles content in the products and process the liquors with outfield(such as magnetic field and ultrasound field) to improve the decomposition rates. It can be indicated that different methods have different consolidation effects. There are different characteristic in additives and ultrasound, Ultrasound can obviously improve the decomposition rate, while additives can increase the coarse gibbsites content effectively, when gibbsites precipitation from caustic Aluminate solutions with seeds with ultrasound cooperates with additives, not only the decomposition rates can be improve but also coarse gibbsites can be yield easly.

Abstract:Remarkably increasing precipitation rate of sodium aluminate solution was studied by adding active seed and ammonia. The fine active gibbsite seed with irregular edge, large specific area and high oil adsorption capacity was prepared by sodium bicarbonate solution and sodium aluminate. The seeded precipitation rate reached up to 65% by adding < 20 g L-1 active seeds into the sodium aluminate solution. Moreover, 75% precipitation rate was obtained due to the coupling contribution from the active seed and ammonia. Ammonia added in the initial precipitation stage improved precipitation rate, whereas minimal change in precipitation rate occurred by adding ammonia in latter period of precipitation. High precipitation rate also led to precipitation of fine gibbsite. In addition, increasing ammonia amount benefitted the formation of Al(OH)(4)(-) and slightly reduced the amount of Al2O(OH)(6)(2-). Electrical conductivity in solution was decreased by adding ammonia. This is quite probably attributed to the increase in ionic pairs of Na+Al(OH)(4)(-) and subsequently precipitation of gibbsite from Al (OH)(4)(-).

Abstract:The decomposition fraction and the particle size distribution during the precipitation process of sodium aluminate solution under different conditions with and without ultrasound were compared respectively. The experiments results indicate that while the conditions of ultrasound being kept constant, the ultrasonic effect on the precipitation process is enhanced as the concentration of sodium aluminate is reduced, and it is more significant at medium α_k. The effect of physical properties of sodium aluminate on ultrasonic enhancement on the precipitation process and ultrasonic cavitation was further investigated by the detection of surface tension coefficient and image of Luminol sonofluorescence.

Abstract:Comparison of concentration change of impurities of Si and Fe in the solution and the content change of Si,Fe and Na in the seed during seed precipitation of sodium aluminate solution with and without ultrasound is made.Experiments indicate that there is no obvious incerase of impurity concentration in the precipitation liquor and there is also no obvious increase of impurity content of Si,Fe and Na in the seed and product under ultrasound.Alumina of first grade can be produced.
