Abstract:The paper discusses the key techniques of Micro WEDM to meet the needs of high precision and surface integrity and lays a strong emphasis on studying the pulse generator with micro energy, intelligent technological project and the gap characteristic of fluid. Therefore the problems of controlling the energy precisely and intelligent strategy of machining technology for intricate micro parts are solved, which meets the demand of Micro WEDM ultimately.

Abstract:This paper studied and summarized the state of the art of micro-EDM systemically. The technical characteristics and application between common micro machining and micro-EDM are compared and analysed. And then the principle and its application of wire electrode discharge grinding (WEDG) in micro machining are discussed. Because there is no macro force during EDM, this paper introduces the feasibility and mostly form of miniaturizated EDM apparatus.

Abstract:This work deals with an experimental investigation of the machining characteristics of Micro Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (MWEDM). The MWEDM process consists of only one cutting operation varying with machining conditions. Experimental results show that the peak current and pulse duration have an obvious influence on surface roughness and machining time, and they also have an optimum value for the highest cutting speed. The servo reference voltage influences the surface roughness and machining time as well. In particular, the surface characteristics of work-pieces and a micro wire electrode were analyzed in detail too. Utilizing a micro wire electrode with diameter 30μm, MWEDM can machine a micro slot 38μm wide, which proves that the discharge gap can be controlled not more than 4μm. It can also machine micro gears respectively with a module 40μm, thickness 1mm, and a module 100μm, thickness 3.5mm. All kinds of micro shaped holes and complex micro parts can be easily machined as well.

Abstract:Wrie electrochemical micromachining (WEMM) is an electrochemical dissolution micro process using a micro wire electrode. The process can remove electrically conductive materials with the transferring of ions, so that high precision is achievable. The short-circuit worsened the machining stability. The two types of short-circuit in WEMM: clogging short-circuit and unavoidable short-circuit was analyzed, and the gap status in WEMM was identificated. The method of punitive function was used to optimize the velocity of feed forward, and the strategy of servo-control system were designed. The experiment shows that the method of gap control can improve the mahining stability. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:Micro machining by wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) has become prosperous owing to its ability to machine conductive, exotic and high strength and temperature resistive (HSTR) materials with the scope of generating intricate shapes and profiles. In order to achieve the very high accuracy micro machining, one of the key factors is the preparation before actual machining. According to the authors' experiences and studies in micro machining by WEDM, for the first time, this paper introduces the preparation process for WEDM in micro machining. From the gauge setup, wire alignment adjustment, working coordinate setup to calibration method for rotational axis, the preparation process has been studied and introduced in detail, which forms the solid basis for high accuracy micro machining by WEDM. Experimental results show the accurate geometrical features can be fabricated based on the proposed preparation process.

Abstract:A new Micro-WEDM machine is developed in this paper. Therefore, experiment can be done on this machine. Especially, the surface characteristics of work-pieces are analyzed in detail. The Micro-WEDM can machine micro slot easily. In addition, all kinds of micro shaped holes, micro gears, complex micro parts and dies are machined to check its processability. A micro gear can be easily fabricated by micro-forming method with the micro gear dies fabricated by micro-WEDM, and get well performance, which indicates that micro parts machined by Micro-WEDM meet the requirements of micro instrument and device.

Abstract:Micro wire electrical discharge machining (Micro-WEDM) is one key micro-processing technology for intricate micro parts. The surface texture is different with a single mechanical cutting surface and conventional spark-erosion formation machined surface. Assessment of the existing surface texture roughness parameters in terms of accuracy, or in the characterization of fine sense, can not meet the Micro-WEDM surface texture characterization needs. Through the analyses of surface autocorrelation function, structural shape ration, steepest attenuation autocorrelation function and surface texture direction, explicit the precise meaning of surface texture parameter characterization, make it really reflect the actual condition of Micro wire electrical discharge machining surface, modify Characterization Parameter algorithm, simplify the calculation process, make the results more accurate and more intuitive. Abstract:In Micro Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (Micro-WEDM), the kerf width varies with different machining parameters, which will greatly influence the machining precision In order to study the kerf variations in Micro-WEDM, the influence of kerf variation is analyzed and the experiment considering the kerf width and machining speed are performed on self-developed micro-WEDM under different machining parameters. With the reference of the experiment results, 32 mu m wide slot is machined with Phi 30 mu m wire-tool on stainless steel workpiece.

Abstract:A micro electro discharge machining (EDM) equipment is developed in this paper. It includes granite basement which can decrease stray capacitance, precise servo mechanism, precise high speed rotary spindle, a RC-pulse generator used by micro EDM, machining states detecting system and machining process control system. In addition to these, a new type of wire electro discharge grinding (WEDG) unit is designed and set up in this equipment. The CNC interpolation for the 3 axes linkage movement can be realized easily on this equipment. Therefore, micro shaft, micro hole, and 3D microstructure can be machined easily by using this equipment. The relationship between rotating speed of spindle or dielectric and the machining efficiency or the relative electrode wear rate is researched through machining experiments. Experiments show that the microelectrode diameter as small as 12 mum and the micro hole with minimum size of 25 mum could be obtained steadily, and the maximum aspect ratios of microelectrode and micro hole are over 25 and 10 respectively. At last, a complicated 3D microstructure is machined by using this equipment and micro-EDM technology.

Abstract:This paper discusses fabrication method of the rotating structure using microwire electrical discharge machining (micro-WEDM). A high-speed rotating spindle has been designed and installed to in-house developed micro-WEDM equipment with two axis to enable the processing microrotating structure. In order to realize high-precision processing, a numerical control program creator for micro-WEDM has been developed based on CAD/CAM technology, and the precise processing code can be obtained to complete the microrotating structure. In this study, a central composite design testing with 3-factor and 5-level is used for experimental plan. And the second-order relational model is established by using response surface methodology, which used to examine the influences of three parameters (open voltage, discharge capacitance, and revolving speed of workpiece) on the material removal rate (MRR). Finally, experimental results prove that the parameters have significant effect on the MRR.

Abstract:A micro EDM system which can machine micro electrodes,micro holes and micro 3D structures was developed.On this micro EDM system,the processing parameters such as machining open voltage,machining capacitances,rotating speed of spindle or dielectrics that effected on machining efficiency as well as the relative electrode wear rate were presented.And the processing rules of micro EDM are obtained.The technology that applied rotation chamfered edge electrode to increase the machining efficiency of micro holes of high aspect ratio was also researched.Lots of machining experiments were done,and the micro electrode with minimum diameter 6μm and the micro hole with minimum diameter 10μm are machined.Complex micro 3D structures can be machined easily on this equipment by using a method of electrode wear compensation on-line.At last,micro 3D structures,a micro turbo wheel with 24 blades,4mm in dimension of outer diameter and a micro 3D beam which is very popular in MEMS,are machined on this machine,which proves the wide applications of the micro EDM system.
