Abstract:Research advances in toughening of unsaturated polyester resin were reviewed.Some toughening methods,such as blending with liquid rubber and/or elastomers,changing monomer component and nano-composites were described in details.The mechanism of shrinkage and control,and the effect of low shrinkage additive including polyvinyl acetate,polystyrene,block copolymers and inorganic filler were introduced.The effects of phosphor-containing flame retardants and halogen free flame retardants on unsaturated polyester resin were also discussed.

Abstract:Polyurethane (PU) prepolymer based on poly (propylene glycol) (PPG400 or PPG1000) reacted with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) was synthesized firstly and then introduced into epoxy network by additive reaction with epoxy (EP) and cure of epoxy. The effects of epoxy modified by PU based on polyether were investigated. It was found that the introduction of PU not only toughened epoxy resin but also increased the strength. While PU content increased, tensile strength, flexural strength and impact strength of PU/EP all increased firstly and then decreased. Too much PU would not be introduced into epoxy network. The modification effect of PU based on PPG400 which had shorter chain was better than that based on PPG1000, and the appropriate mass ratio of PU to EP was 15% -20%. The introduction of 1, 4-butanediol (1, 4-BD)/trimehylol propane (TMP) could prolong PU chain in the system and form network. However, the strength and toughness could not be enhanced further.

Abstract:As a commonly used polymer material, epo xy resin and its modified composites have much wide prospect in industrial applica tion. Based on a large amount of publications, the current investigating status about epoxy based nano-composites was reviewed in this paper. The synthesizing principles and structural characteristics of epoxy based nano-composites synthe sized respectively by intercalation polymerization, directly mixing method and s ol-gel method, were briefly introduced. Simultaneously, the macroscopic propert ies of various epoxy based nano-composites were also discussed. In addition, th e further investigation and application of epoxy based nano-composites were pro posed.

Abstract:Polyamidoamine Dendrimer(PAMAM) was used as modifiers in epoxy resins in this paper.The mechanical properties were investigated by Instron experimental aircraft;Meanwhile,the rupture of sample was analyzed by scanning electron microscope(SEM).The results show that the modifiers of polyamidoamine dendrimer bring about an improvement on the characteristics of epoxy resins at the same time.Comparing with sample of unmodified epoxy resins,tensile strength and impact energy increases 18%(modified(2.5G) PAMAM) and 96%((2.5G) PAMAM) respectively.The effect of polyamidoamine dendrimer(PAMAM) modified epoxy resins is superior to acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber. The rupture of sample changes from brittleness to elasticity.

Abstract:In this review, the developments achieved in the field of the acrylic ester resin with moderate polarity over the last few years were presented. Special attention is paid to the preparation techniques of resin network by changing the variable of the network synthesis. The internal structure of the resin beads can be controlled by parameters in the polymerization recipe such as mole fraction of cross-linker as well as the type and volume of diluent/ porogen/ pore generating solvent, an inert organic solvent, added to the monomer phase. In common, the pore size as well as surface area increases with the volume of porogen when the crosslink density is maintained constant. Increasing crosslink density increases the surface area and decreases the pore size at a given type and volume of porogen. Many applications of resin are offered.

Abstract:Study on a new composite of epoxy resin/elastomeric nano-particles (ENP) is reported in this paper, which shows that, in comparison with pure epoxy resin and epoxy toughened with CTBN, the composites of epoxy resin/carboxylic nitrile-butadiene ENP and epoxy resin/styrene butadiene vinyl-pyridine ENP possess both higher toughness and heat resistance. Both ENPs used in the study have an average size of less than 100 nm. Study on the epoxy network’s morphology and interface properties suggests that due to the chemical reaction between ENP and epoxy resin and more hydrogen bonds between nitrile groups of the rubber and hydroxyl groups of the epoxy resin, stronger interaction at the larger interface may lead to the observed excellent properties of the epoxy resin toughened with ENP.

Abstract:The versatile characteristic of epoxy and its diversity made it suitable for different industrial applications such as laminated circuit board, electronic component encapsulations, surface coatings, potting, fiber reinforcement, and adhesives. However, the pervasive applications in many high-performance field limited the epoxy use because of their delamination, low impact resistance, inherent brittleness, and fracture toughness behavior. The limitations of epoxy can be overcome by incorporation and modification before their industrial applications. Currently, modified epoxy resins are extensively used in fabrication of natural fiber-reinforced composites and in making its different industrial products because of their superior mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. Present review article designed to be a comprehensive source of recent literature on epoxy structure, synthesis, modified epoxy, bio-epoxy resin, and its applications. This review article also aims to cover the recent advances in natural fiber-based epoxy composites and nanocomposites research study, including manufacturing techniques and their different industrial applications.

Abstract:As a matrix resin of the fiber composite materials,epoxy resin is widely used in the manufacture of the structural materials of the aircraft,the fan blades,sports equipment,etc.because of the excellent mechanical properties and processing performance.However,the crosslink density of epoxy resin is high after curing,and therefore the shortcomings of low toughness,poor fatigue resistance and bad impact properties of the cured resin make the application of epoxy resin be limited to some extent.Toughening epoxy resin has been a hot research spot,also one of the difficulties.In this paper,the toughening modification methods of epoxy resins by using Rubber elastomer,thermoplastic resins,inorganic particle,hyperbranched polymers(HBP),interpenetrating polymer networks(IPN) were introduced.The toughening mechanism of each method was analyzed.The research progress of the modification methods for epoxy resin at home and abroad were reviewed.

Abstract:The toughening of epoxy resin has always been one of the key topics in the researches about high-performance matrix used for advanced composites. Up to now, single-property enhancement is usually accompanied by some compromises of other properties. This work constructed a novel in-situ interpenetrating network (IPN) structure composed of epoxy resin and vinyl ester resin (VER), along with modified octavinyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (EPOSS) as the toughening core. In the present resin system, the VER component was firstly introduced to form IPN structures without phase separation to bring the improvement of overall strength and plastic deformation capacity. Moreover, the EPOSS could realize nano-scale dispersion in the resin matrix through the chemical reactions, which acted as the trigger of plastic shear deformation toughening under particle debonding. The side chains' physical entanglement of EPOSS played the key role in maintaining a balance between toughness and mechanical strength. With only 2 wt% of EPOSS, the optimal increase in impact toughness reached 139.6%, in addition to the 17.9% improvement of tensile strength and 9.0% enhancement of Young's modulus.

Abstract:Epoxy resin was modified with aminopolysiloxane.In the case of the preparation of epoxy resin /aminopolysiloxane adhesive,the influence of all the variables on the mechanic performance was researched,such as the modification time,the modification temperature,the mass ratio of epoxy resin to aminopolysiloxane,the amino number and inherent viscosity of the aminopolysiloxane.In the result,the toughness of epoxy resin was improved greatly.
