Abstract:In this review,state-of-the-art technology of polyolefin-based elastomer manufacture, including major producers and product trademarks,grades and properties were summarized. Research and developments on production process and catalyst system for the ethylene-propylene binary and ternary rubbers(EPM,EPDM,mEPDM),the poly(ethylene-co-α-olefin) elastomer(POE)and the poly(ethylene-block-α-olefin) elastomer(OBC)were also introduced. It has been pointed out that the thermoplastic elastomer,such as POE and OBC,and the polyolefin plastomer not only had excellent mechanical and physical properties of polyolefin-based elastomer,but also was easy molding and processing,and can be recycled and reused. And the metallocene catalyst had the advantages of high activity,good ability to catalyze copolymerization withα-olefin,and single active site. In order to independently develop the polyolefin-based elastomer,the thermoplastic elastomer and plastomer with more excellent performance and more profitable,such as mEPDM,POE and OBC et al,the researches on the metallocene catalyst with high temperature adaptability and the high temperature solution polymerization process must be strengthened.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The combination of awareness of harmful industrial processes and environmental issues and depleting petroleum‐based resources has spurred much research in developing materials from renewable sources. Epoxy resins are common pre‐polymers used in a variety of industries, such as adhesives, coatings, insulations, and high performance composites. To transform epoxy resins into crosslinked networks with desirable thermal and mechanical properties, the resins must be cured with a curing agent. This review encompasses recent developments using bio‐based epoxy resins and bio‐based epoxy curing agents. Resins and curing agents synthesized from modified plant oils, sugars, polyphenols, terpenes, rosin, natural rubber, and lignin are highlighted and their thermal and mechanical properties reviewed. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Study on a new composite of epoxy resin/elastomeric nano-particles (ENP) is reported in this paper, which shows that, in comparison with pure epoxy resin and epoxy toughened with CTBN, the composites of epoxy resin/carboxylic nitrile-butadiene ENP and epoxy resin/styrene butadiene vinyl-pyridine ENP possess both higher toughness and heat resistance. Both ENPs used in the study have an average size of less than 100 nm. Study on the epoxy network’s morphology and interface properties suggests that due to the chemical reaction between ENP and epoxy resin and more hydrogen bonds between nitrile groups of the rubber and hydroxyl groups of the epoxy resin, stronger interaction at the larger interface may lead to the observed excellent properties of the epoxy resin toughened with ENP.

Abstract:The versatile characteristic of epoxy and its diversity made it suitable for different industrial applications such as laminated circuit board, electronic component encapsulations, surface coatings, potting, fiber reinforcement, and adhesives. However, the pervasive applications in many high-performance field limited the epoxy use because of their delamination, low impact resistance, inherent brittleness, and fracture toughness behavior. The limitations of epoxy can be overcome by incorporation and modification before their industrial applications. Currently, modified epoxy resins are extensively used in fabrication of natural fiber-reinforced composites and in making its different industrial products because of their superior mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. Present review article designed to be a comprehensive source of recent literature on epoxy structure, synthesis, modified epoxy, bio-epoxy resin, and its applications. This review article also aims to cover the recent advances in natural fiber-based epoxy composites and nanocomposites research study, including manufacturing techniques and their different industrial applications.

Abstract:Medium molecular weight, novel polyfunctional elastomers, namely epoxy groups on poly (n-butylacrylate) (ETPnBA) and carboxyl groups on poly (n-butylacrylate) (CTPnBA) were photosynthesized for evaluation as the toughening agents in epoxy resins. The effect of the functionality and kind of functional group of the elastomers upon the toughening of epoxy resins modified with these rubbery copolymers as a second phase was investigated by tensile tests, impact test, and electron microscopy. It was found that there exists an optimum functionality of elastomers for maximum impact resistance in epoxy groups (ETPnBA) and carboxyl groups (CTPnBA) copolymer-modified systems. Studies on morphology of the modified epoxy resin system indicated that the better toughening effects of epoxy groups ETPnBA in an epoxy resin matrix can be attributable to the existence of a multiple distribution of particle sizes. The aggregation of rubber particles occurring in carboxyl group CTPnBA modified epoxy resin caused a loss of toughness.

Abstract:As a commonly used polymer material, epo xy resin and its modified composites have much wide prospect in industrial applica tion. Based on a large amount of publications, the current investigating status about epoxy based nano-composites was reviewed in this paper. The synthesizing principles and structural characteristics of epoxy based nano-composites synthe sized respectively by intercalation polymerization, directly mixing method and s ol-gel method, were briefly introduced. Simultaneously, the macroscopic propert ies of various epoxy based nano-composites were also discussed. Abstract:A new composite consisting of epoxy resin and elastomeric nanoparticles with high, toughness and high heat-distortion temperature is prepared. The size of the nanoparticles used was less than 90 nm. The excellent properties of the composite seem to be due to stronger interactions between the carboxyl groups of the nanoparticles and the epoxy,groups of the resin, and to enhanced hydrogen bonding between the nitrile groups of the rubber and the hydroxyl groups of the resin.

Abstract:This article reviews the degradability of chemically synthesized bioelastomers, mainly designed for soft tissue repair. These bioelastomers involve biodegradable polyurethanes, polyphosphazenes, linear and crosslinked poly(ether/ester)s, poly(e-caprolactone) copolymers, poly(1,3-trimethylene carbonate) and their copolymers, poly(polyol sebacate) s, poly(diol-citrates) and poly(ester amide) s. The in vitro and in vivo degradation mechanisms and impact factors influencing degradation behaviors are discussed. In addition, the molecular designs, synthesis methods, structure properties, mechanical properties, biocompatibility and potential applications of these bioelastomers were also presented.

Abstract:Instead of using traditional functional liquid rubbers in toughening epoxy, light pyrolysis natural rubber (LPNR) obtained from scrap rubber was introduced to improve the toughness of cured epoxy resins. Epoxy blends were prepared by physically mixing the epoxy resins with various concentrations of LPNR. The structure, thermal, mechanical properties and morphology of the epoxy blends were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, impact behavior, and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the inclusion of 5 phr LPNR reached the maximum value in impact strength of the modified epoxies and the presence of LPNR enables the epoxy resins to fracture in a pattern more akin to ductile materials than in case of the neat epoxy which shows features of brittle rupture. The agglomeration of rubber particles decreased the toughness of epoxy resins modified with more LPNR. Meanwhile, the nearly unchanged glass transition temperature of LPNR epoxy samples illustrated weak interfacial adhesion existed between the rubber phase and epoxy matrix due to low compatibility and feeble combination between them. The thermal stability of modified epoxy resins went down because of the existence of LPNR domains inside the matrix. Overall, the LPNR should be further investigated to improve its compatibility and reinforce its combination with the epoxy resins to become a particularly efficient toughening agent because of its cheaper resource and contribution to environmental protection.

Abstract:This study investigated the modification of epoxy resin with a hydroxyl-terminated polystyrene-butadiene liquid rubber copolymer. The Fourier transform infrared analysis evidenced the occurrence of a chemical reaction between the oxirane ring of epoxy resin and the hydroxyl functional group of hydroxyl-terminated polystyrene-butadiene using benzyldimethylamine as a catalyst. The mechanical results indicated that the 10 phr hydroxyl-terminated polystyrene-butadiene-modified epoxy resin exhibited the maximum impact strength of 16.5J/m(2), which is about 91.8% higher than that for the neat epoxy; the best mechanical performance in terms of tensile and flexural properties was achieved at 10 phr hydroxyl-terminated polystyrene-butadiene content; higher concentration of hydroxyl-terminated polystyrene-butadiene resulted in the cured networks lower impact and strength values. The investigation on the microstructure of hydroxyl-terminated polystyrene-butadiene-modified epoxy resin showed a two-phase morphology where the hydroxyl-terminated polystyrene-butadiene domains were uniformly dispersed in epoxy resin matrix. The addition of hydroxyl-terminated polystyrene-butadiene into epoxy resin reduced the thermal stability, whereas, it obviously improved the volume, surface resistivity; and the dielectric breakdown strength of 20 phr hydroxyl-terminated polystyrene-butadiene-modified epoxy resin was 36kV/mm compared to 31.2kV/mm of the neat epoxy resin.

Abstract:Epoxy acrylate resin is a kind of photo curable resin which is most widely used in the field of UV curing industries for their good adhesion,hardness,and chemical resistance,etc.But the epoxy acrylate resin has some disadvantages such as high viscosity and poor flexibility.Modification is necessary to improve the comprehensive properties of epoxy acrylate resin.In this paper,the synthesis principle and the influence of main factors on synthetic reaction of epoxy acrylate resin were introduced.The recent research progress and mainly modification method of epoxy acrylate resin were reviewed.Meanwhile,the major problems in applications of hyperbranched polymer in coatings were indicated,and it provided the reference for the further development of the performance of epoxy acrylate resin.

Abstract:Acrylate rubber is a kind of elastomer polymerized with acrylate monomers,and has been widely applied in automobile,electrical appliance,wire and cable,etc.In this paper,the structure characteristics and properties of acrylate rubber was firstly introduced,and then the research progress of the synthetic method for acrylate rubber was summarized,including continuous emulsion polymeri-zation,semi-continuous emulsion polymerization,core-shell emulsion polymerization and radiation e-mulsion polymerization.Furthermore,the new research works on improving the over-all properties of acrylate rubber by molecular structure designing and optimizing as well as the demulsification process were reviewed.At last,the development directions of acrylate rubber were looked forward.

Abstract:The research advances in rubber/halloysite nanotubes (rubber/HNTs) nanocomposites are reviewed. HNTs are environmentally-friendly natural nanomaterials, which could be used to prepare the rubber-based nanocomposites with high performance and low cost. Unmodified HNTs could be adopted to prepare the rubber/HNTs composites with improved mechanical properties, however, the rubber/HNTs nanocomposites with fine morphology and excellent properties were chiefly prepared with various modifiers by in situ mixing method. A series of rubber/HNTs nanocomposites containing several rubbers (SBR, NR, xSBR, NBR, PU) and different modifiers (ENR, RH, Si69, SA, MAA, ILs) have been investigated. The results showed that all the rubber/HNTs nanocomposites achieved strong interfacial interaction via interfacial covalent bonds, hydrogen bonds or multiple interactions, realized significantly improved dispersion of HNTs at nanoscale and exhibited excellent mechanical performances and other properties.
