Abstract:ABSTRACTCore‐sheath structured electrospun fibers with styrene‐butadiene‐styrene (SBS) block copolymer as a rubbery core and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as a hard sheath were prepared by coaxial electrospinning, and used to improve the toughness of epoxy resin. The surface of the fibers was aminated by reacting PAN with diethylenetriamine to improve the interfacial interaction between the fibers and epoxy. Scanning and transmission electron microscopies confirm the core‐sheath structure of the PAN/SBS fibers. The Charpy impact energy is increased by the addition of electrospun fibers. When the content of aminated core‐sheath fibers is 4 wt %, the Charpy impact energy is increased by 150%. Dynamic mechanical analysis shows that the glass transition temperature of epoxy is not decreased by the addition of core‐sheath fibers. The high impact resistance is attributed to the rubbery core of the fibers that can absorb and dissipate impact energy, and the chemical bonding between the fibers and epoxy. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The newest toughening mechanisms for epoxy resin, such as avulsion and plastic stretch for dispersed phase, crack for passivated radicle resin, riveted crack, brittleness-toughness transition and other toughening mechanisms were summarized. Various ways and their mechanisms for toughening epoxy resin, such as rubber elastomer, thermoplastic resin, curing agent with flexible chain, rigid nano-particle, TLCP, CSP and IPN etc. ,were discussed. Direction of study on toughening epoxy resin in future was pointed out.

Abstract:As a matrix resin of the fiber composite materials,epoxy resin is widely used in the manufacture of the structural materials of the aircraft,the fan blades,sports equipment,etc.because of the excellent mechanical properties and processing performance.However,the crosslink density of epoxy resin is high after curing,and therefore the shortcomings of low toughness,poor fatigue resistance and bad impact properties of the cured resin make the application of epoxy resin be limited to some extent.Toughening epoxy resin has been a hot research spot,also one of the difficulties.In this paper,the toughening modification methods of epoxy resins by using Rubber elastomer,thermoplastic resins,inorganic particle,hyperbranched polymers(HBP),interpenetrating polymer networks(IPN) were introduced.The toughening mechanism of each method was analyzed.The research progress of the modification methods for epoxy resin at home and abroad were reviewed.

Abstract:Counting for approximately 3.13 million tons of products, epoxy resins (EPs) have been extensively employed as matrix resins of composites and applied in aerospace, aviation, wind, nuclear power, high-speed rail, as well as many other manufacturing industries. However, certain inherent limitations severely impede further applications of these advanced materials, such as poor fatigue resistance, low impact resistance, hard to recycle, and a “seesaw” between toughness and strength. Here, we especially focused on the recent progress in toughening methods and associated mechanisms for these epoxy resins and analytic techniques for characterizing toughness, which highlighted the applicable approaches to generate homogeneous structures. As a typical homogeneous toughness material, hyperbranched polymers, especially hyperbranched epoxy resins (HERs), are ideal candidates to solve the knotty problem of EPs because HERs can homogeneously reinforce and toughen diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA), promoting the degradation of DGEBA, as well exhibiting strong interfacial interactions among components, due to their excellent compatibility, wettability and low viscosity. Last but not least, we advance the objectives and challenges of epoxy resins in the future. Overall, this review presents an up-to-date overview of toughening methods and mechanisms for EPs, and guidance of emerging research on the sustainable development of EPs in versatile high-tech fields.

Abstract:Excellent thermal and mechanical properties and high chemical resistance with low shrinkage of epoxy resins open a wide window of various industrial applications, including coatings, paints, adhesive, etc. Despite their excellent properties, epoxy resins are brittle and have a low resistance to the initiation and growth of cracks. To overcome this drawback, different kinds of reinforcements, including liquid rubbers, core–shell rubber particles, dendritic polymers, block copolymers, thermoplastics, rigid particles, etc., have been used to improve the fracture toughness of epoxy resin systems. This paper briefly introduces each reinforcement separately and mainly presents an in-depth review of the progress of the last decade in the field of toughening of epoxy resins using core–shell rubber particles. This review paper also refers to the results of the research papers published on the effect these rubber particles on the mechanical properties of epoxy resins, as well as explains different toughening mechanisms of epoxy resins. Researchers first focused on the use of core–shell rubber particles containing different cores and shells. They then used core–shell rubber particles along with rigid fillers such as silica to offset the slight diminish in mechanical properties, as well as the glass transition temperature. In recent years, some research teams have used core–shell rubber particles and block copolymers simultaneously and have achieved fascinating results.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Toughening of epoxy resins is a trend emerging field in high-performance polymers due to the outstanding properties of the final material. When fully cured, epoxy has a tridimensional crosslinked structure that makes it inherently brittle. The incorporation of liquid rubber (LR) is a possible strategy to minimize this drawback, considerably increasing the fracture toughness of cured epoxies. It is also possible to add a rigid particle to the epoxy/liquid rubber systems, seeking to recover some original properties. This systematic review addresses the toughening of epoxy resin using liquid rubber (binary composites) and hybrid liquid epoxy/liquid rubber/particle composites focusing on the last ten years. The systematic review was performed according to PRISMA protocol, which delivers a rationale, meticulous and planned method of all available primary research in response to an investigation. After the primary search, forty-three studies were deeply analyzed and discussed, concentrating on the types of constituents and their effect on the mechanical (tensile, impact and fracture toughness) and morphological characteristics of the composites, as well as on the methodologies employed to produce them. Finally, the identified trends and future perspectives are given for easier identification of main gaps and opportunities in the field.

Abstract:Epoxy resin materials have excellent processability, adhesion, corrosion resistance, electrical insulation, mechanical properties, heat resistance and other properties. At present, they are widely used in weapons, aviation, aerospace, high-temperature adhesives and many other fields. However, epoxy resin has the defects of brittleness, low flexibility, weak impact resistance, poor peel resistance and low heat resistance in the process of use, especially in high-end fields such as weapons, the upper limit temperature is not high, The problems of high brittleness and easy premature cracking exposed in low temperature environment limit the deeper use of epoxy resin materials. This paper analyzes and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of some mainstream epoxy resin modification technologies, and prospects the next research trend, so as to provide reference for further research on strengthening and toughening epoxy resin in the future.

Abstract:Medium molecular weight, novel polyfunctional elastomers, namely epoxy groups on poly (n-butylacrylate) (ETPnBA) and carboxyl groups on poly (n-butylacrylate) (CTPnBA) were photosynthesized for evaluation as the toughening agents in epoxy resins. The effect of the functionality and kind of functional group of the elastomers upon the toughening of epoxy resins modified with these rubbery copolymers as a second phase was investigated by tensile tests, impact test, and electron microscopy. It was found that there exists an optimum functionality of elastomers for maximum impact resistance in epoxy groups (ETPnBA) and carboxyl groups (CTPnBA) copolymer-modified systems. Studies on morphology of the modified epoxy resin system indicated that the better toughening effects of epoxy groups ETPnBA in an epoxy resin matrix can be attributable to the existence of a multiple distribution of particle sizes. The aggregation of rubber particles occurring in carboxyl group CTPnBA modified epoxy resin caused a loss of toughness.

Abstract:The toughening effects of three kinds of liquid rubber on epoxy were investigated. It is shown that the yield stress of composites decreases with the liquid rubber content increasing, while impact strength exhibits the maximum value in the range from 10 phr to 15 phr rubber inclusion. The liquid rubber with higher acrylonitrile content exhibits better toughening effect, and the toughening mechanisms are mainly matrix shear deformation and crack pinning. For the liquid rubber with lower acrylonitrile content, the cavitation of rubber particles and subsequent void growth by matrix shear deformation are predominant toughening mechanisms. Besides, the size of the rubber particles is correlated with the mesh size of the cross-linking network of the epoxy matrix in order to interpret the size effect of rubber particles on the properties of the composites.

Abstract:Solid rubber-toughened epoxy resin (EP) has important theoretical and application value. However, the compatibility between solid rubber and EP is usually poor, leading to severe phase separation and consequently poor toughening effect. In this work, ethylene-glycidyl methacrylate-vinyl acetate solid rubber (EGVA) was functionalized with carboxyl groups (EGVA-COOH) and amino groups (EGVA-NH2), which was confirmed by 1H NMR, and used as reactive tougheners for EP systems. All functionalized EGVA rubbers can react with EP molecules to form the EGVA-g-EP, resulting in better compatibility between the EP matrix and the EGVA. Furthermore, the functionalized EGVA can react with EP matrix to incorporate into the final EP network to form a co-network, which greatly improve the compatibility between the EP matrix and EGVA. As a consequence, the EGVA particle size was reduced by a factor of 71.4%, and the impact toughness of EP resin with 5 phr EGVA-NH2 was increased by 130% without sacrificing the tensile strength and heat resistance. Theoretical analysis indicated that critical stress intensity factor (K Ic ) and critical strain energy release rate (G Ic ) of EP were 158% and 341% higher than that of neat EP, respectively. Therefore, this work provided a novel route for producing EP-based thermosets with balanced strength and toughness by in situ constructing interfacial bonding and elastic segments into epoxy network, which could broaden the application range of solid rubber in the field of epoxy toughening.

Abstract:Although epoxy resins can be substantially toughened by addition of a reactive liquid rubber, the improvement in toughness is inevitably accompanied by a significant loss in elastic modulus and yield strength. This paper presents a novel route for preparing the liquid rubber/epoxy composites with high yield strength, Young׳s modulus and impact strength. By this new method, the epoxy composites with different grades of carboxyl terminated butadiene acrylonitrile copolymer (CTBN) and cured by different curing agents were prepared, and their mechanical properties were characterized. It is found that no matter what grades of CTBN, also regardless of curing agents, the composites prepared by the new method always exhibit much higher impact strength, yield strength and Young׳s modulus than the corresponding traditional composites, proving the new method to be somewhat universal. Especially, some CTBN/epoxy composites exhibit even higher yield strength and Young׳s modulus than that of pure epoxy.

Abstract:To improve the toughness of epoxy polymers, cross-linked rubber (CLR) particles or core–shell rubber (CSR) particles can be blended into the epoxy matrix. Particle cavitation is thought to be the main toughening mechanism of rubber-modified epoxies. Although CLR-modified epoxies have not been studied in depth previously, it is expected that the toughening mechanism differs from that of CSR-modified epoxies because void formation is less likely to occur. We formed the CLR- and CSR-modified epoxy resins using nanosized acrylonitrile butadiene CLR particles, which showed good compatibility with the epoxy matrix and the CSR particles with a rubbery core surrounded by a glassy shell. The toughening mechanism was examined by comparing the fracture behavior, fracture surfaces, and process zones via tensile and fracture toughness testing, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and transmission optical microscopy (TOM). There was a difference in the characteristics of the R-curves between the CLR- and CSR-modified epoxies. In addition, the SEM and TEM observations indicated that there was a difference in the fracture mechanism.

Abstract:Epoxy resin-based composites play an important role in daily life due to their various excellent properties, and their scale application is greatly limited due to their embrittlement phenomenon in low-temperature environment. This paper reviews the progress of domestic and international research on the performance of epoxy resin in a low-temperature environment and its toughening mechanism, involving toughening materials including rubber elastomers, thermoplastics, nanomaterials, flexible chain segments and hyperbranched polymers. This study mainly summarizes several methods for toughening epoxy resins in a low-temperature environment, so as to provide theoretical guidance for future researches. Toughening modification of epoxy resin broadens its industrial application scope. In the future, researchers can promote the research of epoxy resin toughening design on the basis of modification methods, filling methods, toughening mechanisms, and operational implementability.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the toughening effects of rubber and thermoplastic particles on epoxy resin (EP), and to understand the mechanism underlying their synergistic effect. For this purpose, three EP systems were prepared using diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy resin (E-54) and 4,4-Diamino diphenyl methane (Ag-80) as matrix resin, 4,4-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) as a curing agent, and phenolphthalein poly (aryl ether ketone) particles (PEK-C) and carboxyl-terminated butyl liquid rubber (CTBN) as toughening agents. These systems are classified as an EP/PEK-C toughening system, EP/CTBN toughening system, and EP/PEK-C/CTBN synergistic toughening system. The curing behavior, thermal properties, mechanical properties, and phase structure of the synergistic-toughened EP systems were comprehensively investigated. The results showed that PEK-C did not react with EP, while CTBN reacted with EP to form a flexible block polymer. The impact toughness of EP toughened by PEK-C/CTBN was improved obviously without significantly increasing viscosity or decreasing thermal stability, flexural strength, and modulus, and the synergistic toughening effect was significantly higher than that of the single toughening system. The notable improvement in toughness is believed to be due to the synergistic energy dissipation effect of PEK-C/CTBN.
