Abstract:The versatile characteristic of epoxy and its diversity made it suitable for different industrial applications such as laminated circuit board, electronic component encapsulations, surface coatings, potting, fiber reinforcement, and adhesives. However, the pervasive applications in many high-performance field limited the epoxy use because of their delamination, low impact resistance, inherent brittleness, and fracture toughness behavior. The limitations of epoxy can be overcome by incorporation and modification before their industrial applications. Currently, modified epoxy resins are extensively used in fabrication of natural fiber-reinforced composites and in making its different industrial products because of their superior mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. Present review article designed to be a comprehensive source of recent literature on epoxy structure, synthesis, modified epoxy, bio-epoxy resin, and its applications. This review article also aims to cover the recent advances in natural fiber-based epoxy composites and nanocomposites research study, including manufacturing techniques and their different industrial applications.

Abstract:In the current research, we observed numerous suggestions are promoting the use of bio-based epoxy resins, replacing the petroleum-based products like Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A type epoxy resin DGEBA. With the passage of time, the impending challenges include preparation of environmentally-friendly epoxy with minimum toxic side effect and improved properties. Therefore, we describe a very useful method for preparing new silicone-bridged dimethyl siloxane monomers in high quantity, derived from naturally occurring eugenol. By putting the methyl siloxane, computed with different chain lengths into their molecular backbone. Such epoxy monomers have different molecular structure with high purity. This dimethyl siloxane epoxy, with lower viscosity than commercial DGEBA epoxy, has superior thermal properties, which were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry DSC. Modification of CMS increases the hydrophilicity. Bio-based epoxy (self-prepared) resin improved adhesive properties, with the help of modified CMS. This study presents a very easy and effective chemical modification to enhance interfacial adhesion composites with superior properties.

Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA) is the main precursor in the synthesis of epoxy resins. However, because of its toxic and nonrenewable nature, BPA is unsuitable in the sustainable preparation of epoxy resins. In contrast, Diphenolic acid (DPA) is renewable but its carboxyl group limits its applications in bio-based thermosets. In this study, we report a novel amidation route to tailor DPA to produce epoxide monomers that present epoxy resins with a high performance. The diphenolic amides exhibited very low toxicities when compared with that of BPA, and also provided an unexpected autocatalytic effect on the curing reactions when succinic anhydride (SA) was used as the hardener. Dynamic mechanical analyses (DMA) and tensile test results confirmed the remarkable thermo-mechanical properties of the cured epoxy resins, which may be attributed to the increased cross-linking density and enhanced hydrogen bonding by the amide groups. Among the SA-cured epoxy resins, diglycidyl ether of diphenolic ethylamide exhibited the best performance, which included a high T-g of 114 ?degrees C, char yield (CY) of 20%, tensile strength of 60.2 MPa, and toughness value of 185 MPa. In addition, the DPA-derived epoxy resins have great potential in the preparation of bio-based composites because they act as excellent interfaces between the resin and cotton fibers (CoFs). Our study presents a new strategy to prepare bio-based epoxy resins with a high performance, emphasizing the greater potential of amidated DPA derivatives to replace BPA in the epoxy resin market.

Abstract:The article briefly reviews literature on the modification of epoxy resins and their properties, which are used for its industrial applications. Experimental results on modified epoxy resins are collectively summarized, which focus on the structure, curing, and alternate methods for modification of epoxy resins. The several properties such as thermal stability, adhesive, toughness, and electrical conductivity have been studied during the modifications of epoxy resins, which is useful in the field of electronic encapsulation, blending, composites, and nanocomposites, etc. The review concludes with a brief discussion on the most useful valuable modifications for industrial applications.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The combination of awareness of harmful industrial processes and environmental issues and depleting petroleum‐based resources has spurred much research in developing materials from renewable sources. Epoxy resins are common pre‐polymers used in a variety of industries, such as adhesives, coatings, insulations, and high performance composites. To transform epoxy resins into crosslinked networks with desirable thermal and mechanical properties, the resins must be cured with a curing agent. This review encompasses recent developments using bio‐based epoxy resins and bio‐based epoxy curing agents. Abstract:As a commonly used polymer material, epo xy resin and its modified composites have much wide prospect in industrial applica tion. Based on a large amount of publications, the current investigating status about epoxy based nano-composites was reviewed in this paper. The synthesizing principles and structural characteristics of epoxy based nano-composites synthe sized respectively by intercalation polymerization, directly mixing method and s ol-gel method, were briefly introduced. Simultaneously, the macroscopic propert ies of various epoxy based nano-composites were also discussed. In addition, th e further investigation and application of epoxy based nano-composites were pro posed.

Abstract:Epoxy resin adhesives (ERAs) as easily prepared thermosetting adhesives have been extensively employed in building construction, electrical appliance manufacturing, automobile manufacturing and wood industry because of their excellent mechanical properties, water resistance, low cost, long service life and strong bonding properties. This chapter aims to introduce the synthesis, properties and development of ERAs and to illustrate how defects in their curing properties, thermal properties, brittleness and flammability affect their global development. Furthermore, this study introduces the modification of ERAs according to these defects and their development in main application fields. Lastly, the limitations and prospects of ERAs in future applications are also discussed.

Abstract:Polyamidoamine Dendrimer(PAMAM) was used as modifiers in epoxy resins in this paper.The mechanical properties were investigated by Instron experimental aircraft;Meanwhile,the rupture of sample was analyzed by scanning electron microscope(SEM).The results show that the modifiers of polyamidoamine dendrimer bring about an improvement on the characteristics of epoxy resins at the same time.Comparing with sample of unmodified epoxy resins,tensile strength and impact energy increases 18%(modified(2.5G) PAMAM) and 96%((2.5G) PAMAM) respectively.The effect of polyamidoamine dendrimer(PAMAM) modified epoxy resins is superior to acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber. The rupture of sample changes from brittleness to elasticity.

Abstract:As a matrix resin of the fiber composite materials,epoxy resin is widely used in the manufacture of the structural materials of the aircraft,the fan blades,sports equipment,etc.because of the excellent mechanical properties and processing performance.However,the crosslink density of epoxy resin is high after curing,and therefore the shortcomings of low toughness,poor fatigue resistance and bad impact properties of the cured resin make the application of epoxy resin be limited to some extent.Toughening epoxy resin has been a hot research spot,also one of the difficulties.In this paper,the toughening modification methods of epoxy resins by using Rubber elastomer,thermoplastic resins,inorganic particle,hyperbranched polymers(HBP),interpenetrating polymer networks(IPN) were introduced.The toughening mechanism of each method was analyzed.The research progress of the modification methods for epoxy resin at home and abroad were reviewed.

Abstract:Epoxy resin is widely used in electrical equipment and electronic devices fields due to its excellent electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. However, its internal three-dimensional covalent interconnection structure brings barriers to its degradability and recycling because covalent bonds cannot be broken easily. With the replacements of power equipment and electronic devices, there will be more and more epoxy resins and their composites in them to be treated and effective recycling is of great significance for resource conservation and environmental protection. In this review article, recent progress in degradation and recycling of epoxy resin is introduced and the effect of three traditional degradation methods is discussed. The drawbacks of these methods are thought to come from the intrinsic properties of these epoxy resins. So the urgency of developing new kinds of degradable epoxy resins is proposed. Then different types of new degradable epoxy resins are reviewed. Degradation mechanisms of the opened-loop recycling and recycling methods of the closed-loop recycling are summarized in detail. Finally, the challenges and perspectives are discussed based on their current developments. This review comprehensively considers both traditional degradation methods and new methods for developing degradable epoxy resins. It covers not only an overview of the state-of-the-art advances of degradation and recycling of epoxy resin but also the prospects that provide reference for the synthesis of degradable epoxy resin materials.

Abstract:Due to the enhancement of people's environmental awareness, flame-retardant epoxy resin (EP) tends to be non-toxic, efficient, and multi-functional, and its development is systematic. At present, many new flame retardants or intrinsic modification methods reported in studies can effectively improve the flame retardability and thermal stability of EP. However, many aspects still need to be further improved. In this review, the flame-retardant mechanism and method of flame-retardant epoxy resins are briefly analyzed. The research progress of the flame-retardant modification of epoxy resin by physical addition and chemical reaction is summarized and discussed. Furthermore, the research trend of flame-retardant epoxy resin in the field of fire-protective coatings is discussed, and future problems in this field are put forward. This work may provide some new insights for the design of multi-functional integrated epoxy resin fireproof coatings.

Abstract:Epoxy resin was modified with aminopolysiloxane.In the case of the preparation of epoxy resin /aminopolysiloxane adhesive,the influence of all the variables on the mechanic performance was researched,such as the modification time,the modification temperature,the mass ratio of epoxy resin to aminopolysiloxane,the amino number and inherent viscosity of the aminopolysiloxane.In the result,the toughness of epoxy resin was improved greatly.

Abstract:Epoxy resin will continue to be in the forefront of many thermoset applications due to its versatile properties. However, with advancement in manufacturing, changing societal outlook for the chemical industries and emerging technologies that disrupt conventional approaches to thermoset fabrication, there is a need for a multifunctional epoxy resin that is able to adapt to newer and robust requirements. Epoxy resins that behave both like a thermoplastic and a thermoset resin with better properties are now the norm in research and development. In this paper, we viewed multifunctionality in epoxy resins in terms of other desirable properties such as its toughness and flexibility, rapid curing potential, self-healing ability, reprocessability and recyclability, high temperature stability and conductivity, which other authors failed to recognize. These aspects, when considered in the synthesis and formulation of epoxy resins will be a radical advance for thermosetting polymers, with a lot of applications. Therefore, we present an overview of the recent finding as to pave the way for varied approaches towards multifunctional epoxy resins.

Abstract:Epoxy resin (EP) is a thermosetting resin with prominent performances and wide applications. However, the inherent brittleness limits its development in the engineering materials area. A liquid bio-based polyester polyol (LLP) with flexible long chains was synthesized in this study by melt polycondensation of corn straw lignin. After being compounded with EP (LLP/EP), the mechanical property, micromorphology and thermal behavior of the composite were evaluated. The experimental result indicated that the fracture brittleness of EP composite was decreased by importing the LLP. The bending and impact strength were up to 113.67 MPa and 51.29 kJ/m 2 for 10%-LLP/EP, which were 5.25% and 27% higher than those of unmodified EP. The results of this work build new avenues for the efficient utilization of lignin and the development of low-cost, high-performance and well environmentally adaptable EP composite by renewable resources.

Abstract:Study on a new composite of epoxy resin/elastomeric nano-particles (ENP) is reported in this paper, which shows that, in comparison with pure epoxy resin and epoxy toughened with CTBN, the composites of epoxy resin/carboxylic nitrile-butadiene ENP and epoxy resin/styrene butadiene vinyl-pyridine ENP possess both higher toughness and heat resistance. Both ENPs used in the study have an average size of less than 100 nm. Study on the epoxy network’s morphology and interface properties suggests that due to the chemical reaction between ENP and epoxy resin and more hydrogen bonds between nitrile groups of the rubber and hydroxyl groups of the epoxy resin, stronger interaction at the larger interface may lead to the observed excellent properties of the epoxy resin toughened with ENP.
