Abstract:The PP/bamboo fiber composites were prepared by mixing-injection molding process with bamboo fiber as reinforced material.The surface morphology,thermal properties and chemical structure of the composites were tested and characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA) and infrared spectrometer(FTIR).The results show that: the mechanical properties and thermal properties of composites are improved with bamboo fiber modified by alkali and coupling agent.The interfacial compatibility of composites improves and the interface bonding force increase with the adding of coupling agent.The mechanical properties of composites are better with coupling agent KH-550 2%.The break elongation is 14.5%,tensile strength is 30.48 MPa and the impact strength is 22.4 kJ/m2。

Abstract:The waste clam shell was modified by furfural and then introduced as a filler to reinforce polypropylene (PP). The mechanical and crystallization properties of PP composites were investigated as well. The results show that the particle size of modified clam shell powder decreases compared with that of raw clam shell powder and it can significantly improve the interfacial compatibility between filler and PP matrix. The tensile strength of PP composites decreases and elongation increases with increasing the filling content. When the filling content is 7%, the elongation of PP composites is 140%higher than pure PP material. Compared with unmodified clam shell powder, the crystallinity and tensile strength of PP/modified powder composites decreases slowly with increasing filling content. Polarizing microscope observation shows that the typical cross pattern of light extinction for PP becomes more and more unobvious with increasing filling content, and the number ofα-spherulites decreases. Therefore, the modified powder can promote the heterogeneous nucleation of PP.

Abstract:The influence of the polymeric modifier of polyvinyl chloride on the structuring of unsaturated polyester resins has been investigated. It is established that the introduction of 2–5 parts by weight of polyvinyl chloride into a polyester composite accelerates the process of gelation and shortens the time of microgelation of the polyester. The influence of polyvinyl chloride on the structure coefficient, surface hardness, and strength of adhesive bonds and technological shrinkage of modified polyester composites has been revealed.

Abstract:Nano-modification of polyester has become a research hotspot due to the growing demand for high-performance polyester. As a functional carrier, silica nanoparticles show large potential in improving crystalline properties, enhancing strength of polyester, and fabricating fluorescent polyester. Herein, we briefly traced the latest literature on synthesis of silica modifiers and the resultant polyester nanocomposites and presented a review. Firstly, we investigated synthesis approaches of silica nanoparticles for modifying polyester including sol-gel and reverse microemulsion technology, and their surface modification methods such as grafting silane coupling agent or polymer. Then, we summarized processing technics of silica-polyester nanocomposites, like physical blending, sol-gel processes, and in situ polymerization. Finally, we explored the application of silica nanoparticles in improving crystalline, mechanical, and fluorescent properties of composite materials. We hope the work provides a guideline for the readers working in the fields of silica nanoparticles as well as modifying polyester.

Abstract:This review presents a comprehensive overview of recent trends, advances, and challenges in the use of natural fiber composites. This section begins by discussing the growing adoption of bio-based fibers because of their eco-friendly nature and cost-efficiency, focusing particularly on plant-based fibers. A bibliometric analysis will be conducted to evaluate the publication frequency and research trends in this domain. Furthermore, the structural compositions of natural fibers, including cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, pectin, and wax, were elucidated, highlighting their significance in composite material engineering. The extraction methods of natural fibers, including retting and mechanical decortication, are discussed, along with their implications for fiber quality. The limitations associated with natural fibers, including their hydrophilicity and poor mechanical properties, compared with their synthetic counterparts are addressed. Various surface-treatment methods, particularly physical and chemical ones, were explored to enhance fiber compatibility with polymer matrices. The abstract delves into the principles, techniques, and effects of physical and chemical treatments on natural fibers, emphasizing their role in improving the surface characteristics, interfacial adhesion, and overall mechanical properties of composites. Abstract:The work presents the results of a comprehensive study on obtaining compositions based on polypropylene and natural fillers modified by enzymatic preparations under high-shear forces. The experiment protocol includes determining the modification time and the ratio of water volume to the mass of natural filler (hydro modulus) during modification, which turned out to be different for each type of filler. Physical and mechanical analyses were conducted to evaluate the operational characteristics of the obtained composites, with particular attention given to comparing the modified compositions with their unmodified counterparts. The time and hydro module of the enzymatic modification of the natural fillers under consideration were investigated, which turned out to be different for each type of filler. It was found that surface modification of natural fillers improves mechanical properties; namely, the tensile strength of composites with wood and sunflower fillers increases by 10%, and the impact viscosity of composites also increases by 12% with wood and sunflower fillers. Water absorption decreases in composites, after 2 h boiling, with wood flour by 30% and with rice husk by 10%. After a 14-day test at room temperature, water absorption decreases by more than 30% in composites with rice husk. When determining the free surface energy of composites, it was found that the modification of the filler reduces the polarity of the composites in all samples, which can be interpreted as an improvement in the interaction between the filler and the polymer matrix. The findings of this research have important implications for the development of advanced polymeric materials that can be used in a wide range of applications, including automotive, aerospace, and construction industries. The results underscore the importance of surface modifications to optimize the properties of polymeric composites and provide valuable insights into the role of natural fillers in enhancing the performance of these materials.

Abstract:Lignin, a valuable polymer of natural origin, displays numerous desired intrinsic properties; however, modification processes leading to the value-added products suitable for composite materials' applications are in demand. Chemical modification routes involve mostly reactions with hydroxyl groups present in the structure of lignin, but other paths, such as copolymerization or grafting, are also utilized. On the other hand, physical techniques, such as irradiation, freeze-drying, and sorption, to enhance the surface properties of lignin and the resulting composite materials, are developed. Various kinds of chemically or physically modified lignin are discussed in this review and their effects on the properties of polymeric (bio)materials are presented. Lignin-induced enhancements in green polymer composites, such as better dimensional stability, improved hydrophobicity, and improved mechanical properties, along with biocompatibility and non-cytotoxicity, have been presented. This review addresses the challenges connected with the efficient modification of lignin, which depends on polymer origin and the modification conditions. Finally, future outlooks on modified lignins as useful materials on their own and as prospective biofillers for environmentally friendly polymeric materials are presented.

Abstract:Blends of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) have always been the subject of intense reasearch for encouraging polymer waste recycling while producing new materials for specific applications in a sustainable way. However, being thermodynamically immiscible, these polyolefins form a binary system usually exhibiting lower performances compared with those of the homopolymers. Many studies have been carried out to better understand the PE/PP blend compatibilization for developing a high-performance and cost-effective product. Both nonreactive and reactive compatibilization promote the brittle to ductile transition for a PE/PP blend. However, the final product usually does not meet the requirements for high demanding commercial applications. Therefore, further PE/PP modification with a reinforcing filler, being either synthetic or natural, proved to be a good method for manufacturing high-performance reinforcend polymer blend composites, with superior and tailored properties. This review summarizes the recent progress in compatibilization techniques applied for enhancing the interfacial adhesion between PE and PP. Moreover, future perspectives on better understanding the influence of themodynamics on PE/PP synergy are discussed to introduce more effective compatibilization strategies, which will allow this blend to be used for innovative industrial applications.
