Abstract:Polyethylene-based magnetic composites have been prepared by ethylene polymerization on the surface of NdFeB magnets, which is previously activated by ball milling with catalyst components. The level of magnets has been controlled by catalyst preparation and polymerization parameters such as Al/Ti ratio and polymerization temperature. The coertivity and the residual magnetizability were investigated. It was found that the magnetic properties of magnet powders are largely retained. In addition, in contrast to composites prepared by melt mixing, the adhesion force between magnets and polymer matrix is improved significantly and better mechanical properties are expected. Abstract:Molecular composites are polymeric composites with rigid-rod macromolecules as the reinforcing agent and flexible polymers as the matrix.It has been demonstrated that when phase separation is prevented and the rigid-rod macromolecules are uniformly dispersed in the flexible polymers,the mechanical properties and some other physical properties are remarkably increased.Different from traditional fiber-reinforced composites with inorganic micrometer-sized fibers as the reinforcing agent,the molecular composites have relatively low viscosity,can be more easily processed and show both low density and high mechanical properties.The major problem for the preparation of molecular composites is to disperse the rigid-rod macromolecules in the form of single molecules in the flexible matrics,however,due to the unfavorable enthalpy of mixing,phase separation usually happens.This article reviews the methods preventing the occurence of phase separation in the preparation of molecular composites that have been developed in the last three decades.

Abstract:This review describes the emerging research area and relevant physics of polymer-based composites enabled by amorphous ferromagnetic microwires. Fruitful results ranging from their tunable magnetic field and mechanical stress properties and influences of direct current on their microwave behavior are displayed in addition to the brief analysis on the underlying physics. The multifunctionalities exhibited strongly imply a variety of potential applications such as structural health monitoring and high-performance sensors. This article underlines that the future challenge mainly lies in proper microwire tailoring in expectation of a better microwave performance of microwire composites

Abstract:The polymer-based magnetoelectric composites were prepared by the tape-casting method. The poly(vinylidene fluoride)-BaTiO3/poly(vinylidene fluoride)-Sr2CoMoO6/poly(vinylidene fluoride)-BaTiO3(abbreviated as PVDF-BTO/PVDF-SCMO/PVDF-BTO) sandwich structured composites possess strong non-volatile voltage control of magnetization and magnetodielectric properties. It is interesting that the magnetization of the sandwich-structured composite film significantly changes by different poling field, which is possibly originated from the electron orbital reconstruction of Co induced by the interface bound charges. Meanwhile, the response of the dielectric performance under the applied magnetic field is also obvious, which exhibits a maximum negative magnetodielectric coefficient of 10.2%. Our results may provide a new way in the design of polymer-based multiferroic materials and show potential application for multiferroic materials.

Abstract:Polymers have had an enormous impact on science and technology, and their interest relating to the development of new macromolecular materials has exponentially increased. Polymer nanocomposites, materials based on a polymeric matrix covalently coupled to reinforcement, display properties of both components. In the aerospace industry, polymer nanocomposites are attractive due to their promising characteristics, among which lightness, mechanical and thermal resistance, radiation and corrosion resistance, and conductive and magnetic properties stand out. The use of them, instead of metal-based materials, has allowed the optimization of design processes and applications in order to provide safer, faster, and eventually cheaper transportation in the future. This comparative review collects the most relevant and prominent advances in the development of polymer nanocomposites with aerospace applications starting from basic aspects such as the definition of polymer nanocomposite to more specialized details such as synthesis, characterization, and applications, in addition to proposing new research branches related to this topic.

Abstract:To optimize cost and weight and streamline the manufacturing process of existing soft magnetic components, which currently rely on metallic soft magnetic particles, an innovative approach involving the preparation of high-performance magnetic polymeric composites is proposed. These composites are based on soft magnetic ferrite particles with high Curie temperature and magnetic saturation, along with low coercivity and remanent magnetization, and are used as fillers in thermoplastic polymers. To achieve these goals, cobalt ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 ) micro- and nanoparticles were synthesized by two different methos: solid-state reaction and coprecipitation. The as-obtained particles were used to fabricate soft magnetic polymer composites by extrusion and injection molding methods. The successful synthesis of cobalt ferrite was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy. The magnetic behavior of cobalt ferrites and polymer composites was also investigated by vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). This study shows that these new high-performance soft magnetic polymer composites can be used as alternative materials for the manufacture of magnetic components such as inductors and transformers and that their low cost and lightweight make them suitable for the manufacture of magnetic components.

Abstract:Magnetic mesoporous carbon composites were a type of nanomaterials which exhibit properties of both mesoporous carbon materials and magnetic materials.Magnetic mesoporous carbon composites have characteristics of high specific surface area,uniform pore size distribution and environment friendly,as well as good magnetic separation.In this paper,we briefly outline the common preparation methods of mesoporous carbon and magnetic nanoparticles,and then a comprehensive review is presented to introduce and compare the fabrication of magnetic mesoporous carbon composites.Their novel applications in biological medicine,catalysis and sewage treatment were also introduced.The future developments of magnetic mesoporous carbon composites have also been prospected.Meanwhile,the advantages and challenges of environmental friendly green synthetic route in the preparation of magnetic mesoporous carbon composites were discussed.

Abstract:The development of the functional magnetic composites with determined properties is important task for modern material sciences. Control of magnetic and electrodynamic properties realized by the ceramic/polymer composites preparation. Conduction of the investigations of the correlation between chemical composition of the fillers (magnetic powders) and their concentration in the polymer matrix is the best way for solving this task. Two- and tree-component spinel-polymer composites were produced by thermal pressing. As spinels, CoFe 2 O 4 (CF) and Ni 0.4 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.4 Fe 2 O 4 (NCZFO) were used. As a polymer, FEP was used. The concentration of the spinels in the polymer matrix was fixed at 20 mass.%. Investigation of the structural features and magnetic properties were carried out. The impact of the chemical composition and phase ratio of the composites on crystal structure, microstructure, and magnetic properties were established. Magnetic measurements were performed at 300 and 10 K in the fields up to 70 kOe. It was demonstrated that the synergetic effect of ceramic composites violates of the principle of additivity in two-phase ceramic composites. The impact of the polymer matrix on magnetic properties was demonstrated. It opens new perspectives for practical applications of such kind of materials.

Abstract:This paper reviews our recent work on the use of magnetic fields to the polymer processing. Polymers considered in this paper are not peculiar ones synthesized specially for the purpose of magnetic processing, but they are very usual ones including poly(ethylene terephthalate), polypropylene, etc. In this paper, two main magnetic effects on polymers are considered, i.e., alignment and levitation. In the first part, the magnetic torque causing the alignment is described. Then, examples of alignment in polymeric systems are presented, starting from simple cases such as magnetic alignment of fibers in a suspension to more complicated cases such as magnetic alignment of crystalline polymers in which mesophase formations and memory effects are involved. In the second part, the magnetic force acting on diamagnetic materials and its application to separation and processing of polymeric materials is described.

Abstract:Fe3O4 based magnetic polymer nanoparticles (MPNPs) are densely studied for several decades. These Fe3O4 based MPNPs can be used in wastewater treatment and biological field such as magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents, hyperthermia therapy and protein separation. The Fe3O4 based MPNPs are attractive because they combine the advantages of magnetism and polymers together. In order to obtain the practical application in the above mentioned areas, the bare Fe3O4 needs to be functionalised with different kinds of molecules like organic small molecules and polymers and some inorganic molecules like silica, metals and carbon. In this review, the chemical preparation methods, different modification methods and various applications of the Fe3O4 based MPNPs are introduced.

Abstract:The current state of research in the field of synthesis and study of structure and properties of magnetic nanocomposites based on metal-organic frameworks is considered. Magnetic nanocomposites are a combination of metal-organic frameworks with superparamagnetic nanoparticles. The methods of obtaining various magnetic nanocomposites are examined: mixing methods, in situ synthesis ( in situ growing frame structures on magnetic nanoparticles and in situ growth of magnetic nanoparticles in frame structures), template methods (sacrificial template method and emulsion template method), layered self-assembly, and mechanochemical synthesis. Magnetic nanocomposites are divided into two classes: simple, which include only magnetic nanoparticles and ometal-organic frameworks, and complex, which include a third component. Magnetic nanocomposites can have a core–shell, non-nuclear, embedded, and mixed structures. The surface area, porosity, optical, magnetic and catalytic properties of magnetic nanocomposites are considered. Magnetic composites are promising as catalysts, lubricants, supercapacitors, materials for photodynamic therapy, etc.

Abstract:The continuous increase in the demand for electricity causes the need to search for new energy sources and to look for savings during its transmission. One of the areas of interest are materials dedicated to low loss transformer cores. Due to good magnetic properties, amorphous and nanocrystalline iron-based alloys are used in this area. The limited dimensions of these materials make their application difficult. Magnetic composites based on ferromagnetic amorphous alloys are a new direction of research. Usually, composites are made using a non-magnetic binder. However, the separation of magnetic particles worsens the magnetic properties. The solution to this problem may be production of composites coated with high temperature varnish. As part of the work, the results of research on the structure and magnetic properties of composites based on amorphous iron alloys are presented. Composites were made with 0.5% resin by mass and without resin covered with high temperature varnish. Material produced without the use of resin had a lower coercive field value.

Abstract:Magnetic polymer-based composites combine the cost-effectiveness, low density, and manufacturing flexibility of conventional polymers with the unique characteristics of magnetic powders/fillers to form multi-functional magneto polymeric composites that offer superior properties to conventional materials. At higher temperatures, magnetic properties change significantly and the particles within the magnetic powders experience sporadic motion due to the heat which causes misalignment of the magnetic domains, leading to a decrease in magnetism. Due to these adverse temperature effects, high-performance polymers such as polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyetherimide (PEI), high-performance polyamides (HPPA), or other high-temperature thermoplastics have been considered suitable matrix for the magnetic fillers, thereby creating a much wider usage for magneto polymeric composite in applications that requires higher temperature (typically above 175°C). Thus, this review discusses the fabrication processes-injection molding, fused filament fabrication; magnetic performance, and applications of high-performance thermoplastic-based magnetic composites that can be viable for stringent engineering devices such as sensors, actuators, motors, and generators.

Abstract:The development of electric machines necessitates the development solutions with efficiency. One possible solution is airgap-less devices. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop materials with favorable magnetic and tribological applications. The following work presents the production method and performance examination of tribological polymer magnetic composites. Samples were subjected to microscopic examination to determine the morphology of the composite. Tribological and magnetic properties were measured to determine the filler effect on the basic material parameters. Electrical parameters were also examined to determine possible electromagnetic losses in the material. The greatest increase in magnetic permeability was observed for the iron magnetic filler. The greatest improvement in tribological properties was observed for the graphite tribological filler.

Abstract:Fiber-reinforced polymeric composites (FRPCs) with selective fiber orientations are finding applications in building biological constructs, smart materials and energy devices. Field-assisted additive manufacturing (AM) has emerged as one of the promising methods for creating FRPC structures. Compared to other AM processes and due to the liquid form of the raw materials, vat photopolymerization has shown higher potential in building FRPCs with selective fiber orientation. Compared to other methods of controlling the fiber orientation during AM processes, magnetic field-assisted fiber reorientation, is a relatively easy-to-use contactless method that has been effectively paired with vat photopolymerization. One of the major issues in magnetic field-assisted vat photo polymerization is the dispersion instability of the particles in resin system, which leads to separation between the resin components and dispersed particles and results in non-uniform particle distribution during the printing process. In this study, ferromagnetic particle-loaded photocurable resins are developed through surface modification of the particles to achieve more uniform particle dispersion, more dispersion-stable resins systems and enhanced mechanical properties of FRPCs. Magnetite particles were functionalized under silanization reactions and mixed with two photocurable resins. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis was used to select the matching composition of silane compounds and verify the functionality of the treated magnetite particles for each resin mixture. Dispersion stability of the developed resin system was verified by visual observation of the resin mixture and image analysis of microscope images. To provide a better guideline for 3D printing the developed resin system, cure depth of each resin system containing different particle fractions is studied. Tensile tests are devised to understand the effects of particle content, orientation, and surface treatment on mechanical properties of the 3D printed FRPCs. Results of this study suggest that an optimized particle-resin system can be developed through surface treatment of magnetite particles with functional groups.
