Abstract:This article introduces the research progress of the application of nanomaterials,including carbon nanotubes,carbon nanofibers and organoclays in hierarchical carbon fiber/epoxy composites.The preparation,processing technology and properties of the hierarchical composites are reviewed.Present research has demonstrated that the nanomaterials can improve the mechanical properties of conventional composites,especially the interlayer shear strength,fatigue resistance,hot-humidity aging resistance and barrier property.Therefore,the study and application of hierarchical carbon fiber/epoxy composites have attracted great research interests.

Abstract:This paper presents the influence of Aluminum Nitride (AlN) nanoparticles on the electrical and material properties of epoxy resin (EP). The EP/AlN nanocomposites with different concentrations of nano-AlN fillers are prepared. The dispersion of the nano-AlN particles in the composites is analyzed by a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The electrical properties are investigated by the space charge and DC conductivity measurements, whereas the material properties are studied by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The results show that the homo-charge accumulation appears near both electrodes during the polarization, but there are limited negative charges left near both electrodes in the depolarization for the pure EP sample. There is no space charge accumulation in the 1 wt% and 2 wt% EP/AlN nanocomposites. The electric field distortion of the pure EP sample is 20%. Moreover, the electric field distortion initially decreases with the increase of the nano-AlN content, but it increases for the 2 wt% nano-AlN sample. Temperature has a dominant influence on the DC conductivity of the EP/AlN nanocomposites comparing to the pure EP. However, the DC conductivity of the nanocomposites becomes stable at high temperatures. It is also found that the weight loss of the samples decreases with the addition of the nano-AlN and the 1 wt% nano-AlN sample has the highest glass transition temperature. It is elucidated that the high apparent mobility and activation energy facilitate the space charge transport and suppressing the space charge accumulation. Furthermore, the nano-AlN filler can increase the trap level and trap energy density of the deep traps in the sample. The dielectric loss of the EP at high frequency is reduced with the content of 1 wt% nano-AlN. Furthermore, the addition of the nano-AlN can improve the thermal stability of the EP. The 1 wt% nano-AlN sample has the superior electrical insulation and material performance amongst the tested materials.

Abstract:Harvesting biobased silane coupling agent to enhance the connection between fillers and epoxy matrix is vital to achieve sustainable and environmentally friendly products. In this work, a eugenol based epoxy silane-coupling agent with high purity was prepared and used for the surface modification of nano-sized silica particles. The surface structure composition and physical properties of the modified nano-SiO2 were characterized through nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transferred infrared spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analyzer. An epoxy nanocomposite was subsequently prepared by incorporating the resulting modified nano-SiO2 as an enhancing filler. The nanocomposites glass transition temperature, the morphology of fracture surface, dynamic mechanical properties, and thermostability were investigated. Results showed that the eugenol epoxy silane-coupling agent bearing a long chain structure of benzene ring in the molecular structure could improve the compatibility of silica fillers with epoxy resin and contribute to a better dispersion state in the matrix, thus enhancing the overall performance of epoxy-cured products.

Abstract:As a commonly used polymer material, epo xy resin and its modified composites have much wide prospect in industrial applica tion. Based on a large amount of publications, the current investigating status about epoxy based nano-composites was reviewed in this paper. The synthesizing principles and structural characteristics of epoxy based nano-composites synthe sized respectively by intercalation polymerization, directly mixing method and s ol-gel method, were briefly introduced. Simultaneously, the macroscopic propert ies of various epoxy based nano-composites were also discussed. In addition, th e further investigation and application of epoxy based nano-composites were pro posed.

Abstract:This study presents a new method to prepare the ZnS-epoxy resin nanocomposites. An epoxy resin microemulsion is taken as a microreactor for the formation of ZnS nanocrystals. After the reaction, the collected epoxy resin is proved to be a composite with embedded nanoZnS. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that the ZnS nanocrystals are dispersed uniformly in cured epoxy resin matrix.

Abstract:Comparing to the base epoxy resin, nano-composites usually have enhanced mechanical, thermal and electrical properties, and a lot of technology was introduced to get high quality nano-composites. In this work, Ag nanoparticles have been synthesized by using ethanol (and DMF) as reducing agent and solvent in the presence of ultraviolet radiation and polyvinyl pyrrolidone. The particle size can be controlled by changing the time of radiation and the concentration of silver nitrate. Localized surface plasmon resonacnces (LSPR) of colloidal Ag nanoparticles were observed by UV-visible absorption spectra, and the absorption peak position is determined by the size and shape of Ag nanoparticles. After mixing the ethanol containing Ag NPS into epoxy resin, and then removing the solvent by the method of reduced pressure distillation, cured Ag/epoxy resin nanocomposites were well prepared. It is confirmed that the LSPR of Ag NPS still exist in the composites and its UV-visible absorption spectra is tunable by choosing Ag NPS with different size and shape.

Abstract:The multi-walled carbon nanotubes/resin epoxy composite was prepared and the composition and operating conditions were obtained. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to observe carbon nanotubes and the carbon nanotubes/resin epoxy composite. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the carbon nanotubes/resin epoxy composite were measured by the experiments of tension and compression. The results show that carbon nanotubes could obviously improve the mechanical properties of the resin epoxy bulk material.

Abstract:Epoxy resin/CaCO3 nanocomposites were prepared by the methods of extruding, solution blending, and in situ and inclusion polymerization, respectively. The contents of nanoparticles in the nanocomposites were varied from 5 wt % to 15 wt %. Powder coatings with different content of nanoparticles were made from the nanocomposites. The results showed that the cupping property and impact resistance decreased with the increase of coating film thickness. The dispersion of nanoparticles in epoxy matrix affected the impact resistance and cupping property of the obtained coating films greatly. The coating films made from the nanocomposite prepared by in situ and inclusion polymerization showed that the best impact resistance and the maximum cupping property was achieved when nano-CaCO3, content was 5 wt %. Abstract:Micro/nanoscopic properties of epoxy-silica nanocomposites are studied experimentally. The basic syntheses of epoxy-silica nanocomposites are introduced. Some micro/nanoscopic structure and characterizations of epoxy resin/silica nanocomposites, including the chemical elements, microstructure, the scattered state of the inorganic particles, and properties like elastic modulus and its hardness, are quantitatively analyzed using X-ray fluorescence spectral analysis, transmission electron microscope (TEM), and nanoindentation technique. These results will be useful for improving the synthesization technology and for optimizing the properties of epoxy resin-silica nanocomposites.

Abstract:This work provides an overview of recent advances in the polymer nanocompos-ites research. The key research opportunities and challenges in the development of carbon nanotube graphene, interfacial bonding strength in structural and functional nanocom-posites are addressed in the context of fiber reinforced polymer composites. Abstract:Epoxy based nanocomposites have drawn much interest in the field of dielectrics due to their excellent electrical properties. In this paper, the dielectric properties of epoxy-Al2O3 nanocomposites were studied at different filler concentrations by weight (0.5%-10%). The nanocomposite samples with good dispersion of nanoparticles were prepared using silane coupling agent and experiments were performed to measure the dielectric spectrum, dc volume resistance, and arc resistance time. The dielectric permittivities were analyzed in detail with respect to different frequencies and temperatures. The results demonstrated that the dielectric permittivities of nanocomposites were higher than the pure and the introduction of Al2O3 nano-fillers reduce the volume resistances of composites. In addition, enhancements of composites' arc resistance had been observed at low filler loading. The interesting characteristics of nanocomposites are attributed to the interface effects and the interactions between the nanoparticles and epoxy resin.

Abstract:Thermosetting polymer based nanocomposites with excellent mechanical and thermal properties have attracted much attention in recent years. In this paper, preparation methods of this kind of nanocomposites have been briefly introduced. Advances in nanocomposites based on thermosetting polymers including epoxy resin, phenolic resin, unsaturated polyester resin, polynaph-thoxazine resin and thermosetting polyimide resin have been systematically summarized. Conclusions that can be drawn from the literatures are presented with discussions of areas in which future research is required.

Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures

Abstract:Understanding the dynamic mechanical behaviors of nano-modified composites are essential for designing the anti-collision structures. In this work, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were coated by mussel-inspired polydopamine ad-layer for modifying the interface and dispersion behaviors while incorporated into epoxy. Quasi-static and dynamic compression mechanical responses of CNFs-modified epoxy were systematically investigated. The polydopamine-coated CNFs composites (D-CNFs/epoxy) show the improved strength and strain energy density in comparison with the pristine CNFs/epoxy. The results also indicate that the yield stress and stress-softening properties of polydopamine-coated-CNFs/epoxy are more sensitive to strain rate compared with the neat epoxy and pristine CNFs/epoxy. An empirical constitutive equation in consideration of the strain rate and the strain-softening was proposed to characterize the stress-strain curve. The equivalent epoxy/filler simulation model was built to reveal that a higher interface friction is beneficial in improving the strength of composites, but deteriorating the strength while the interface friction is lower than a certain value.

Abstract:Nano-Ag particles stabilized by a hyperbranched polymer (HBP) template were prepared for modifying the epoxy resin. The effects of preparation condition on the size and size distribution of Ag colloidal particles were studied. The Ag@HBP particles were then compounded with the epoxy resin to obtain the Ag@HBP/epoxy composites and the mechanical and dielectric properties of these composites were investigated. Dynamic mechanical analysis results show that the composites have higher loss factors than does the unmodified epoxy resin, which indicate better dissipation of mechanical energy and hence better shock or impact resistance. Fracture morphology of the composite shows a toughness feature. From the dielectric test results, the breakdown strength and dielectric constant of the composites at room temperature are increased, which can be explained by the Coulomb block effect. POLYM. ENG.
