Abstract:A method to reduce the cogging torque in surface mounted permanent-magnet (PM) motors is proposed. In this method, some auxiliary grooves are put on the PM pole face, which reduce the harmonics of field function of PM contributing to the cogging torque. The cogging torque of such a motor is thoroughly analyzed. Based on this analysis the positions of the auxiliary grooves that can minimize the cogging torque are presented. FEM analysis confirms the effectiveness of this method and the optimum width of the auxiliary grooves is also discussed by numerical analysis. The paper also proposes the combined method of both auxiliary grooves and gradually inclined surface edge on PM to achieve better cogging torque reduction. The FEM result shows that this combined method can effectively reduce the cogging torque while keeping the high torque density of the motor.

Abstract:The paper investigates the influence of stator asymmetry on the cogging torque of permanent magnet brushless motors. It shows that high localized magnetic saturation due to such asymmetry can significantly increase the magnitude of the cogging torque and introduces cogging components which have an order lower than the least common multiple between the stator slot number and the rotor pole number. The findings are confirmed by both finite element analyses and measurements on an 18-slot, 6-pole prototype motor.

Abstract:This paper investigates cogging torque reduction methods using canceling effect for dual-stator permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM). The cogging torque in dual-stator PMSMs can be calculated by the superposition of both cogging torque components from outer and inner stator parts neglecting the saturation effect. If out and inner parts have the same least common multiple of pole/slot number combination, both cogging torque components share the same harmonic contents. Therefore, the cogging torque harmonics from both components can be cancelling or additive, which depends on their phase angle difference. In addition to the relative position shift between inner and outer stators, this paper proposes more options using the canceling effect, such as relative position shift between inner/outer magnet poles, inner/outer slot number pairing, size pairing of inner/outer slot openings, and size pairing of inner/outer pole-arc to pole-pitch ratios. The investigation shows all these methods can effectively reduce the cogging torque. The analysis is verified by direct finite element results.

Abstract:This paper presents the use of Taguchi methods in optimizing a PMSM for reducing peak value of cogging torque. The analytical model of cogging torque is derived by the energe method. The Taguchi optimization method was used to generate the experiment samples, which were calculated in 2-D and 3-D FEA. Three different parameters of PMSM, such as skew ratio, pole embrace and stator slot width were optimized. ANOVA was used to analysis the effect of different factors in Taguchi method.

Abstract:Flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machines are gaining in popularity due to their robustness, wide speed range, high torque, and high power density. However, their cogging torque leads to vibration and noise due to the double-saliency structure. This paper investigates the effects of the short permanent magnet (PM) and stator flux bridge (FB) on the cogging torque reduction of three-phase 12-/10-pole FSPM machines. Four different FSPM machines, including the inner-inner topology, inner-outer topology, outer-inner topology, and outer-outer topology, are developed and analyzed with both short PM and stator FB. The configurations are obtained by placing the FB at inner/outer stator lamination and reducing the PM toward inner/outer axial directions. The cogging torque, average output torque, and PM utilization ratio of different topologies are extensively studied and compared by the finit-eelement method. Finally, prototype machines are manufactured and tested. The experimental results have validated the numerical models and the effectiveness of the developed machine in reducing the cogging torque. The results also suggest that the outer-inner topology is more effective to reduce the cogging torque, which not only reduces the utilization of the PM materials, but also mitigates the cogging torque at only slight cost of machine performance.

Abstract:As the double-stator motor has two stators, if no techniques are adopted in motor design, the cogging torque Of the double-stator motor will increase one time than conventional motors, which will decrease the performances of the whole motor system. For the existence of two stators, if the method of the skewing of the stator slots or alternatively of the PMs is adopted to reduce the cogging torque, the motor structure will be more complex. The paper aims at the structure features of this motor, a two dimensional Finite Element Analysis method is used to analyze the main element to influence the cogging torque. The influences of relative position angle of the two stators, the magnet arc length, the inner and outer airgap length, and the combination of different teeth and slots are discussed to restrain the cogging torque. The scheme of staggering two stators to half cycle cogging torque is provided, and the tests of the prototypes are made to support it.

Abstract:The cogging torque of permanent magnet synchronous motor is harmful to driving systems. In this paper, a compensation method based on the harmonic current injection is presented to reduce the influence of cogging torque on the motors. Simulation and experimental results show that the presented method is effective to compensate the cogging torque.

Abstract:Cogging torque makes great attribute to the torque ripple and noise of permanent magnet motor. The causes to produce cogging torque are discussed in this paper. The cogging torques of two PM motors is computed by finite element analysis. Computed results show the effectiveness of pole-slot-pairing method to reduce ideal cogging torque. While in practical motor, there may be some defects caused by manufacture, such as magnet performance discrete, and the evaluation of stator inner surface. These defects can cause non-ideal cogging torque. Such cogging torque is quantificationally analyzed by finite element analysis.

Abstract:Abstract The permanent magnet motor will inevitably produce cogging torque because of its inherent structure, which will cause vibration and noise and affect its application in certain high-precision applications. Firstly, considering the actual cogging structure of the stator, a general analytical model of cogging torque of the permanent magnet motor is obtained by the energy-based approaches. On the basis of the further derivation of cogging torque analytical expressions with different segmented pole structures, a cogging torque combination reduction method is presented based on the particle swarm optimization algorithm, by comprehensively optimizing three different combinations of the opening width of stator slot, the calculating pole arc coefficient and the number of PM pole segments, the method can reduce the “peak-to-peak value” of cogging torque. The finite element analysis (FEA) results prove the validity of the proposed method.

This paper analyzes the cogging force of tubular linear permanent magnet motor, and presents methods to reduce it. The end component cogging force, which is the special character of linear motor, is reduced by optimizing the mover length. This method is verified by experimental tests.

Abstract:It is found that if the slot number per pole is not an integer, new lower harmonics of cogging torque may be introduced when permanent magnet(PM) shifting is adopted. To reduce cogging torque, both the original and newly introduced lower harmonics of cogging torque should be reduced. In this paper, the effect of PM shifting on Bnz(Bnz is the Fourier coefficient of the square of magnetic flux density B2 in the center of airgap without the effect of slot and tooth) is studied. The finite element method(FEM) and evolution strategies are combined to find the best shifting angles to reduce the original and new lower harmonics of cogging torque. It is verified cogging torque can be greatly reduced by the shifting angles calculated in this paper. ©2006 IEEE.

Abstract:The external-rotor permanent magnet torque motor is widely used in electric vehicles and mobile robots. In order to improve its working accuracy, the cogging torque needs to be reduced. Cogging torque results from the interaction of permanent magnet magnetomotive force harmonics and air-gap permeance harmonics due to slotting. In this paper, the finite element analysis (FEA) has been conducted on the external-rotor surface-mounted permanent magnet motor. Cogging torque can be reduced by optimizing the shape of the permanent magnet (PM) according to the theoretical analysis. And three types of PM pole shape are adopt to reduce the cogging torque. By optimizing the dimension parameters of PMs, each of these three shapes can reduce the cogging torque effectively.

Abstract:A restrain strategy of cogging torque for double-stator hybrid direct drive motor (DSHBDDM) is presented. Based on the magnetic network model of the motor, the cogging torque characteristic is analyzed. The scheme of staggering tooth of two stators to decrease the cogging torque is provided, and the concept of staggering tooth coefficient is put forward. Also the effect of the scheme on the electromagnetic torque of the motor is discussed. A prototype is made and the results of the experiments indicate that staggering tooth of two stators can decrease the cogging torque largely and have less effect on the electromagnetic torque. The result of the experiments is consistent with the analysis of the theory.

Abstract:The non-ideal factors of permanent magnet motor have great influences on its cogging torque. Based on the energy method and Fourier series expansion the general expression of cogging torque was obtained and the harmonic components of cogging torques were analyzed under both ideal and non-ideal conditions. Furthermore, the cogging torque of an interior permanent magnet in-wheel motor with 12 slots and 10 poles was investigated using finite element method under three conditions of ideal condition, elliptical stator existed and magnet offset respectively. The results indicate that the cogging torque has changed obviously under non-ideal conditions and the low-order harmonic caused by the elliptical stator has the most important effect on it. A cogging torque measurement system was proposed, which was composed of stepping motor, torque sensor, etc. The experiments on the cogging torque of the prototype motor were conducted, the experimental results are in agreement with the calculated results and the validity of the theoretical analysis was verified.

Abstract:In addition to the characteristics of a conventional motor, a novel direct-drive double-stator perma-nent-magnet brushless motor proposed can operate in the state of either a generator or a motor as appropriate.Through numerical calculation and analysis, the output torque of double-stator permanent-magnet brushless motor of the same volume as the traditional machine is discussed, and the reduction of torque ripple by using the structure features of this motor is investigated. The results indicate that lower torque ripple under the condition of ideal effective torque can be obtained by the rational design of motor. The prototype motors tested show that this kind of motor structure has a higher power density.

Abstract:An analytical method based on electromagnetic energy and Fourier series expansion was proposed,the mathematical model expression of cogging torque was deduced for PM poles skewing and normal motors,and the different effect of overall-skewing and stepped-skewing on cogging torque was discussed.Based on these expressions,a novel method was found for reducing cogging torque by suitable selection of pole-arc coefficient,the number of poles'modules and their radial sizes.The validity of the proposed method was verified by 3Dfinite element analysis.This method was used on disc-type permanent magnet motor for novel pumping unit.The experiment result shows that stepped-skewing PM poles method is suitable for cogging torque reduction.

Abstract:Axial flux permanent magnet machines have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their numerous advantages in various applications, including electric vehicles, wind turbines, and robotics. However, one of the critical challenges associated with these machines is the presence of cogging torque, which can hinder their efficiency and performance. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art techniques employed for cogging torque reduction in Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Machines. Different techniques are described, encompassing geometric optimization, magnet placement, and skewing methods. Firstly, the significance of Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Machines is described, as well as the issue of the cogging torque. In the methods section, a review of the strategies for the reduction of cogging torque is described from various articles, and finally, in the discussion section, a list of actions is presented for cogging torque reduction for different topologies. The novelty of the study is that it combines strategies for cogging torque reduction in a single article.

Abstract:Drive motors are the mainstay in our day-to-day life. In drive motors, the Permanent Magnet Brushless DC (PMBLDC) motors are more prominent. It has excellent torque-speed characteristics. Compared to others, it has less maintenance cost. The Cogging torque is one of the crucial obstructions in PMBLDC Motor. It has always been a severe impact on the high performance of the machine. The cogging torque leads to the generation of immense vibration and noise. This paper introduces the magnet shaping method for the decrement of cogging torque in a PMBLDC motor. This asymmetrical rotor structure reduces the magnet locking between the rotor and stator. To obtain the asymmetrical rotor structure here, introduced rotor magnets with thicknesses 2.5 mm and 2 mm. Each of the two has the same pole arc 630. These magnets had placed alternatively. This paper also derived an analytical expression of cogging torque with asymmetrical rotor magnets using the Virtual Work Method (VWM). The PMBLDC motor with the asymmetrical rotor had analyzed by 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The simulation result by FEA had compared with the analytical results. It figured out that the cogging torque reduction in the two compared findings is almost alike. The proposed asymmetrical rotor structure is advantageous in minimizing the cogging torque.
