Abstract:A method to reduce the cogging torque in surface mounted permanent-magnet (PM) motors is proposed. In this method, some auxiliary grooves are put on the PM pole face, which reduce the harmonics of field function of PM contributing to the cogging torque. The cogging torque of such a motor is thoroughly analyzed. Based on this analysis the positions of the auxiliary grooves that can minimize the cogging torque are presented. FEM analysis confirms the effectiveness of this method and the optimum width of the auxiliary grooves is also discussed by numerical analysis. The paper also proposes the combined method of both auxiliary grooves and gradually inclined surface edge on PM to achieve better cogging torque reduction. The FEM result shows that this combined method can effectively reduce the cogging torque while keeping the high torque density of the motor.

Abstract:This paper presents the use of Taguchi methods in optimizing a PMSM for reducing peak value of cogging torque. The analytical model of cogging torque is derived by the energe method. The Taguchi optimization method was used to generate the experiment samples, which were calculated in 2-D and 3-D FEA. Three different parameters of PMSM, such as skew ratio, pole embrace and stator slot width were optimized. ANOVA was used to analysis the effect of different factors in Taguchi method.

Abstract:Flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machines are gaining in popularity due to their robustness, wide speed range, high torque, and high power density. However, their cogging torque leads to vibration and noise due to the double-saliency structure. This paper investigates the effects of the short permanent magnet (PM) and stator flux bridge (FB) on the cogging torque reduction of three-phase 12-/10-pole FSPM machines. Four different FSPM machines, including the inner-inner topology, inner-outer topology, outer-inner topology, and outer-outer topology, are developed and analyzed with both short PM and stator FB. The configurations are obtained by placing the FB at inner/outer stator lamination and reducing the PM toward inner/outer axial directions. The cogging torque, average output torque, and PM utilization ratio of different topologies are extensively studied and compared by the finit-eelement method. Finally, prototype machines are manufactured and tested. The experimental results have validated the numerical models and the effectiveness of the developed machine in reducing the cogging torque. The results also suggest that the outer-inner topology is more effective to reduce the cogging torque, which not only reduces the utilization of the PM materials, but also mitigates the cogging torque at only slight cost of machine performance.

Abstract:The paper investigates the influence of stator asymmetry on the cogging torque of permanent magnet brushless motors. It shows that high localized magnetic saturation due to such asymmetry can significantly increase the magnitude of the cogging torque and introduces cogging components which have an order lower than the least common multiple between the stator slot number and the rotor pole number. The findings are confirmed by both finite element analyses and measurements on an 18-slot, 6-pole prototype motor.

Abstract:This article investigates the influence of design parameters on average torque and compares the electromagnetic performances of novel dual-armature flux-switching permanent magnet (DA-FSPM) machines with different stator core shapes. Firstly, the topology of novel E- and C-core DA-FSPM machines are proposed and their operating principles are introduced. Secondly, the influence of design parameters on average torque of U-, E- and C-core DA-FSPM machines are analyzed in detail, including the stator to rotor copper loss ratio, split ratio, magnet arc, stator tooth arc, stator yoke thickness, rotor tooth arc and rotor yoke thickness. Then, the key parameters of the machines are sequentially optimized to maximize the average torque. It shows that the optimal parameters of the DA-FSPM machines are no longer the same as their FSPM counterpart machines. Furthermore, the electromagnetic performances of the optimized DA-FSPM machines and their FSPM counterpart machines are compared, including the phase back-EMF, electromagnetic torque, overload capability, inductances, power factor, efficiency, and unbalanced magnetic force. Finally, the finite-element analyses are validated on two prototype machines.

Abstract:This paper investigates cogging torque reduction methods using canceling effect for dual-stator permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM). The cogging torque in dual-stator PMSMs can be calculated by the superposition of both cogging torque components from outer and inner stator parts neglecting the saturation effect. If out and inner parts have the same least common multiple of pole/slot number combination, both cogging torque components share the same harmonic contents. Therefore, the cogging torque harmonics from both components can be cancelling or additive, which depends on their phase angle difference. In addition to the relative position shift between inner and outer stators, this paper proposes more options using the canceling effect, such as relative position shift between inner/outer magnet poles, inner/outer slot number pairing, size pairing of inner/outer slot openings, and size pairing of inner/outer pole-arc to pole-pitch ratios. The investigation shows all these methods can effectively reduce the cogging torque. The analysis is verified by direct finite element results.

Abstract:It is found that if the slot number per pole is not an integer, new lower harmonics of cogging torque may be introduced when permanent magnet(PM) shifting is adopted. To reduce cogging torque, both the original and newly introduced lower harmonics of cogging torque should be reduced. In this paper, the effect of PM shifting on Bnz(Bnz is the Fourier coefficient of the square of magnetic flux density B2 in the center of airgap without the effect of slot and tooth) is studied. The finite element method(FEM) and evolution strategies are combined to find the best shifting angles to reduce the original and new lower harmonics of cogging torque. It is verified cogging torque can be greatly reduced by the shifting angles calculated in this paper. ©2006 IEEE.

Abstract:In this paper, the method with different pole arc combination was adopted to reduce the cogging torque in PMDC motors. To minimize the cogging torque, a global optimization algorithm (zooming algorithm) and the finite element method (FEM) are combined to find the best pole arc combination. The Fourier coefficient of the square of magnetic flux density is analyzed to determine the feasible region from which the lowest cogging torque was obtained. Then the zooming algorithm and FEM are used to find the best combination. It can be concluded that the cogging torque is notably reduced

Abstract:An analytical method based on electromagnetic energy and Fourier series expansion was proposed,the mathematical model expression of cogging torque was deduced for PM poles skewing and normal motors,and the different effect of overall-skewing and stepped-skewing on cogging torque was discussed.Based on these expressions,a novel method was found for reducing cogging torque by suitable selection of pole-arc coefficient,the number of poles'modules and their radial sizes.The validity of the proposed method was verified by 3Dfinite element analysis.This method was used on disc-type permanent magnet motor for novel pumping unit.The experiment result shows that stepped-skewing PM poles method is suitable for cogging torque reduction.

Abstract:This paper presents soft computing-based optimization techniques for the cogging torque reduction and thermal characterization by finite element analysis in a permanent magnet brushless DC motor (BLDC). Stator and rotor structure of BLDC motor are optimized to reduce the cogging torque, noise, and vibration by using the design parameters namely: length of magnet, length of air gap and opening in the stator slot which are selected by performing variance-based sensitivity analysis. The proposed method is suitable in the preliminary design phase of the motor to determine the optimal structure to improve the efficiency. The comparison of results obtained using firefly algorithm , ant colony optimization algorithm and Bat algorithm indicate that Firefly-based optimization algorithm is capable of giving improved design parameter output. Cogging torque is created due to the interaction of magnets in the rotor and the stator slot of the motor. Thorough thermal analysis is also conceded out to investigate the thermal characteristics at dissimilar portions of the motor namely: stator core, stator slot, rotor core and permanent magnet at different operating environments in the continuous operation mode. Thermal investigation is required for the various high speed e-vehicle applications. The usefulness of the designed machine simulation is compared with the results obtained from hardware analysis. The outcomes attained from software simulation studies are validated through experimental hardware setup.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the cogging torque mechanism of the hybrid excitation flux switching motor. The finite element analysis (FEA) is used to study different cogging torque suppression methods of the motor. These methods include rotor skewing, variable tooth width, auxiliary slot, variable rotor arcs. By comparing these methods, we can say that rotor skewing can not only greatly reduce the cogging torque, but also optimize the waveform of back electromotive force (back-EMF).

Abstract:A significant issue in the design of the Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motors is the cogging torque reduction that leads to negative effects on the BLDC motor's performance such as vibration and noise. However, most methods proposed to reduce cogging torque influence the output torque. Hence, this research aims to reduce cogging torque without having a significant effect on the output torque. For achieving the desired aim which is minimizing the cogging torque concerning the value of output torque, multi-objective optimization is a reliable approach. In this paper, some well-known multi-objective optimization including Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO), Multi-Objective Simulated Annealing (MOSA), and Multi-Objective Red Deer Algorithm (MORDA), are employed to obtain the optimal design of a BLDC motor. In all used optimization algorithms, Simulation results are satisfying and display a significant reduction in the cogging torque, as well as the output torque increases.

Abstract:The external-rotor permanent magnet torque motor is widely used in electric vehicles and mobile robots. In order to improve its working accuracy, the cogging torque needs to be reduced. Cogging torque results from the interaction of permanent magnet magnetomotive force harmonics and air-gap permeance harmonics due to slotting. In this paper, the finite element analysis (FEA) has been conducted on the external-rotor surface-mounted permanent magnet motor. Cogging torque can be reduced by optimizing the shape of the permanent magnet (PM) according to the theoretical analysis. And three types of PM pole shape are adopt to reduce the cogging torque. By optimizing the dimension parameters of PMs, each of these three shapes can reduce the cogging torque effectively.

Abstract:Brushless direct current motors have more attractive features, making them a promising solution for electric vehicle applications. A 1 kW, 510 rpm, 24-slots and 8-pole inner runner type surface permanent magnet mounted radial flux brushless DC motor with seven different permanent magnet pole shape rotor is investigated. Motors with different permanent magnet shape rotors were designed, and finite element modelling and simulation were carried out. For performance comparison, the initial design with a radial-type pole shape was regarded as a reference design. Cogging torque is detrimental to the overall performance of the motor, typically in low-speed applications like electric vehicles. The primary aim of this paper is to reduce the cogging torque & study its effect on the overall performance of the motor and minimize torque ripples with reduced permanent magnet requirements. The proposed designs are analyzed in terms of cogging torque, flux density, torque, efficiency, flux linkage and back-EMF. The comparative analysis shows that the motor with bump-shaped permanent magnet rotor poles has betterperformance than the others.

Abstract:Cogging torque reduction is one of the most important requirements in the design of BLDC motors due to its direct impact on the performance of the motor. In this paper, the influences of tooth width and slot/pole match on cogging torque corresponding to both uniformed teeth and nonuniformed teeth were theoretically analyzed on the basis of analytical expressions of cogging torque deduced with energy method. Furthermore, several models which denote features of different slots and poles were setup and calculated in finite element analysis software Flux2D, the result of which verified the theoretical analysis. Valuable conclusions and some suggestions were given in the paper which is meaningful to the design of good performance BLDC motors.

Abstract:Introduction. In spite of many advantages of radial flux permanent magnet brushless DC motors it suffers from the distinct disadvantage of high cogging torque. The designer must emphasize to reduce the cogging torque during the design stage. This paper introduces magnet shifting technique to mitigate cogging torque of surface mounted radial flux brushless DC motor. Methodology. Initially 200 W, 1000 rpm surface mounted radial flux permanent magnet brushless DC motor is designed with symmetrical placement of permanent magnets with respect to each other on rotor core. Cogging torque profile of this initial motor is obtained by performing finite element modelling and analysis. Originality. This design has been improved by shifting the position of permanent magnets with respect to adjacent permanent magnets. The effect of magnet shifting on cogging torque has been analyzed by performing finite element analysis. Results. It has been examined that the peak to peak cogging torque is decreased from 1.1 N×m to 0.6 N×m with shifting of permanent magnets respectively.

Abstract:An improved torque feedforward control algorithm of interior permannet magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs) is proposed in this paper. A new structure of reference current lookup table is proposed, calculating a cubic polynomial instead of traditional interpolation. This method saves data storing space and decreases computing time. Furthermore, a stator flux linkage and torque commands adjustment algorithm is proposed to increase the maximum torque output and decrease the fluctuation of torque. The optimal coefficients of the proposed algorithm is obtained through simulation and the simulation results vertify the improved torque performance of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:With the rising demand for high-performance motors in electrical vehicle applications, permanent magnet brushless DC motors are a promising solution due to their various attractive features. However, it has a significant drawback of high cogging torque, which deteriorates the overall motor performance. This negative impact is dominating in electric vehicles for low-speed applications. It is desirable to reduce the cogging torque to improve the performance of the radial flux brushless DC motor. The prime focus of this research is reducing cogging torque through the radial pole shaping technique with a bump-shaped rotor pole surface. This work also investigates the impact of the proposed approach on torque ripple and motor performance while cutting down the requirement for rare earth material. This paper uses two ratings: 1000 W, 510 rpm, and 250 W, 150 rpm motors. Two reference motors of proposed ratings were designed using radial-shaped permanent magnet poles. Finite element software is used for the simulation and modeling of the motors. A novel bump-shaped permanent magnet pole shape is introduced, and in-depth investigations have been carried out to evaluate the impact of the proposed pole shape on cogging torque. The validity of the analysis results is further substantiated by comparing the improved and reference model results. The comparison investigation indicates that the motor equipped with the proposed pole shape performs better than the reference motor.

Abstract:Permanent magnet (PM) brushless DC motors (BLDCM) have the advantages of high power density, high efficiency, simple structure and high reliability. BLDCM can be categorized into either trapezoidal back-electromotive (EMF) motor type, or sinusoidal back-EMF motor. There are typically two BLDCM control methods: One is six step control method which is easy to realize with simple hardware, the other is field oriented control (FOC) method which has better control performance. This paper compares quantitatively the characterization between these two BLDC control methods, with respect to torque ripple and power losses. Theoretical analysis and simulation studies are presented to illustrate their advantages and disadvantages. Experimental verification is conducted using a 48V, 4-pole, 4500RPM BLDC motor.
