Abstract:The precursor gel was prepared by sol–gel method using tetrabutyl titanate as the titanium source, citric acid monohydrate as the carbon source, and Fe powder as the additive. Ultrafine TiN was prepared by Fe-catalyzed carbon thermal reduction nitridation reaction at 900 °C − 1100 °C. The catalytic effect of Fe on the thermal reduction nitration reaction of dry gel carbon was investigated. The results showed that Fe significantly promoted the carbothermal reduction nitration reaction of the dry gels. The dry gel was added with 4 wt% Fe and calcined at 900 °C to obtain ultra-fine TiN nanoparticles with an average particle size of ∼ 24 nm. Transmission electron microscopy analysis and Materials Studio simulations indicated that the promotion of Fe on the carbothermal reduction nitridation reaction of xerogels is due to the low-temperature process in which Fe provides heterogeneous nucleation sites for amorphous titanium oxide to promote its crystallization, and adsorption of N2, which makes it easier to dissociate into highly reactive N atoms, thus significantly promoting the carbothermal reduction reaction.
