Abstract:Mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) has been developed as a non-metal, heterogeneous photocatalyst for the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides with O-2 at room temperature. Especially, the combination of mpg-C3N4 and aldehydes was a highly active system under visible-light irradiation. For example, mpg-C3N4/isobutyraldehyde catalytic oxidation of methyl phenyl sulfide afforded 97% conversion with 98% selectivity for the methyl phenyl sulfoxide in 4 h. Moreover, the mpg-C3N4 can be easily recovered by filtration and then reused at least four times without losing activity. By exploring the electron spin resonance and some comparative experiments, a catalytic mechanism of this oxidation was provided. Finally, the system also works well in the oxidation of a number of sulfides, including sulfides bearing various groups, and phenyl disulfide. The use of a metal-free heterogeneous catalyst and visible light energy, along with the mild reaction conditions makes this oxidation reaction an environmentally benign and energy-saving chemical process.
Graphitic carbon nitride/Cu2O heterojunctions: Preparation, characterization, and enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light

Abstract:As a metal-free semiconductor material, graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4), the high recombination rate of photogenerated charges and insufficient sunlight absorption limit its solar-based photocatalytic activity. Here, we reported the heterojunctions of C3N4–Cu2O with a p–n junction structure, which was synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The HR-TEM result revealed an intimate interface between C3N4 and Cu2O in the heterojunction, and UV–vis diffuse reflection spectra showed their extended spectral response in the visible region compared with pure C3N4. These excellent structural and spectral properties, as well as p–n junction structures, endowed the C3N4–Cu2O heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic activities. The possible photocatalytic mechanism that photogenerated holes as the mainly oxidant species in photocatalysis was proposed base on the trapping experiments.

Abstract:Hydrogen sulfide is hazardous and life-threatening gas emission in anaerobic digestion and degradation. Electrooxidation technology is a promising process for sulfide removal in aqueous media due to its high efficiency, cost effectiveness and easy operation. This study employed atomic nickel dispersed on nitrogen-doped graphene catalyst (A-Ni-NG) with stainless steel (SS) substrate for efficient sulfide removal. The results showed that the highest sulfide removal efficiency of 85.02 +/- 1.25% was achieved on SS/A-Ni-NG anode at 1.98 V (vs. RHE) in 48 h, which was 11.17% and 24.18% higher than that of bare SS and FTO/A-Ni-NG, respectively. SS/A-Ni-NG catalyst achieved a first-order rate constant of 0.036 +/- 0.001 h-1, improved by 24% compared with bare SS. The main products of sulfide oxidation were thiosulfate and elemental sulfur with Faradic efficiency of 32.37 +/- 3.20% and 18.99 +/- 0.05%, respectively. Electrochemical analysis showed the sulfide oxidation anodic peak potential on SS/A-Ni-NG anode was 280 mV (vs. RHE), lower than most of the reported graphite or Ni anodes. SS/A-Ni-NG improved the interface electric conductivity and the charge transfer rate, and directly catalyzed sulfide oxidation at applied voltage below oxygen evolution reaction (OER) onset potential. A-Ni-NG also indirectly removed sulfide by boosting OER at higher voltage. The superior sulfide oxidation catalytic activity of SS/A-Ni-NG anode was mainly attributed to the atomic dispersed Ni(I) generating NiOOH that boosted OER process and to the dopant N that induced activation region. A-Ni-NG coated on SS substrate is demonstrated to be a promising material for electrochemical sulfide removal.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and N-hydroxy compounds can function as a non-metal photocatalytic system to activate O-2 for the selective allylic oxidation under mild conditions, avoiding the employment of any metal derivative or organic oxidizing agents. Interestingly, the novel photocatalytic system affords a remarkably high selectivity towards the formation of aldehydes, especially in the oxidation of toluene. By combining the unique nature of g-C3N4 (surface basicity, semiconductor features, high stability) and the remarkable catalytic oxidation reactivity of nitroxyl radicals, this photocatalytic system opens up a mild and efficent access for C-H bond activation.

Abstract:A sunlight-promoted sulfenylation of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones using recyclable graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as a heterogeneous photocatalyst was developed. Using the method, various 3-sulfenylated quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones were obtained in good to excellent yields under an ambient air atmosphere. Moreover, the heterogeneous catalyst can be recycled at least six times without significant loss of activity.

Abstract:Single-Atom Catalysts A single-atom Fe decorated N-doped carbon catalyst (Fe1-N4-C), derived from an Fe-doped metal–organic framework, is developed by Zhengyang Gao, Hai-Long Jiang, and co-workers in article number 2110123. Abstract:A novel Fe-modified g-C3N4 with rich N vacancies (NVs) under N2 calcination was developed to active sulfite for the efficient removal of contaminants and bacterial inactivation under visible light (VIS). The degradation rates of VIS/sulfite/Fe/g-C3N4(N2) for acetaminophen (ACT) were 10.94, 4.88, and 2.85 times higher than those of VIS/Fe/g-C3N4(N2), VIS/sulfite/g-C3N4(N2), and VIS/sulfite/Fe/g-C3N4(CO2), respectively. Escherichia coli (E. coli) with an initial concentration of 2.5 × 108 CFU/mL decreased by 6.1 and 8.4 log CFU/mL within 60 min and 80 min of inactivation, respectively. The activation of sulfite led to the generation of oxysulfur radicals, and the consumption of hole (h+) by sulfite inhibited its recombination with electron (e−), promoting the formation of superoxide radical (•O2–). The synergistic effect of Fe, NVs, and g-C3N4 in VIS/sulfite/Fe/g-C3N4(N2) system promoted the generation of oxysulfur radicals. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that NVs facilitated charge transfer from Fe to g-C3N4 substrate, accelerating the Fe3+/Fe2+ and oxysulfur radical cycles. Fe/g-C3N4 with rich NVs exhibited lower adsorption binding energy, faster charge transfer, and longer S-O bond length than pristine Fe/g-C3N4 during sulfite adsorption. This work unraveled the synergistic mechanism of Fe, NVs, and g-C3N4, which provides new insights into heterogeneous photocatalysts on sulfite activation for water treatment.

Abstract:By combination of photocatalysis and organocatalysis, a metal-free system composed of mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) and N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) offers an efficient and environmentally friendly method for the oxidation of alcohols at room temperature. As a wide-band gap semiconductor, mpg-C3N4 absorbs visible light and uses the energy to activate NHPI, resulting in high catalytic activity in the subsequent oxidation of alcohols. Interestingly, the main oxidation product of benzyl alcohol can be tuned from benzoic acid to benzaldehyde by increasing the ratio of mpg-C3N4 in the catalyst system. To further understand the reaction route, electron spin resonance and Fourier transform infrared measurements were carried out, confirming that active oxygen and phthalimide N-oxyl radicals formed in the mpg-C3N4/NHPI system. Based on these results, a catalytic mechanism for the mpg-C3N4/NHPI system was proposed. Moreover, this metal-free system also works well for the oxidation of various aromatic alcohols with good selectivity for aldehydes or ketones.

Abstract:The selective oxo-functionalization of hydrocarbons under mild conditions with molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant continues to be a hot topic in organic synthesis and industrial chemistry. Though many oxidation protocols in combination with transition metal salts, enzymes, organometallic catalysts, or organocatalysts have been summarized recently, a review that focuses solely on the metal-free allylic/benzylic oxidation strategies with molecular oxygen is still unavailable. This critical review will summarize recent significant advances achieved in this important field under the scope of green chemistry, which covers the promising applications and brief mechanistic profiles involving three kinds of efficient catalysts, namely N-hydroxyimides, homogeneous/heterogeneous light-sensitive molecules, and heteroatom-doped carbon materials, and concerns the sustainability of these methods, as well as predicts the potential utilization of available but unreported analogous catalysts or catalytic systems in this field. Special emphasis will also be placed on the burgeoning metal-free strategies with visible light irradiation from the long-term greenness and sustainability of these oxidation processes due to their established appealing performances under ambient conditions.
Metal-free in situ carbon-nanotube-modified mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride nanocomposite with enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance

Abstract:We synthesized a metal-free photocatalyst comprising mesoporous carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) and carbon nanotubes (CNT), via a facile method involving polymerization of melamine as the precursor in the presence of CNT in refluxing methanol. Under visible light, the CNT/mpg-C3N4 composite resulted in a greater than 8.6 × faster rhodamine B photodecomposition rate compared with bulk graphitic C3N4, and 1.6 × faster compared with pure mpg-C3N4. We attribute the promoted photocatalytic performance of the composite to the synergistic effects of open-ended CNT and mpg-C3N4. The highly interconnected CNT in mpg-C3N4 effectively enhances the transfer of photo-generated electrons, harvests more incident visible light, and provides specific channels for oxygen adsorption and photoreactions. We propose a possible reaction mechanism and report a scavenger experiment that found that superoxide radical (·O2−) is mainly responsible for dye photodegradation. The CNT/mpg-C3N4 retained good stability after several cycles. This work supplies a promising method of exploiting a stable, metal-free, efficient, and visible light-driven semiconductor to enhance solar energy use for environmental remediation.
