Abstract:Low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are the key to electrolytic water splitting of water to produce high purity hydrogen as a green energy source. Construction of nanoarrays on conductive substrates is an effective way to obtain high OER performance, due to the high surface area, enhanced mass diffusion and low interface resistance between catalysts and collectors. To achieve these merits, effective control in the composition, phase structure and size of nanoarrays is highly desirable. Herein, nanosheet arrays of single-phase Co3O4, NiO and Co3O4/NiO nanocomposites were directly grown on carbon cloth by an electrodeposition method. The composition can be finely tuned via changing the Ni2+/Co2+ ratio in the electrodeposition solution. The thickness and plane size of the nanosheets can be also well controlled. The effects of size, composition and phase on the OER activity were investigated in detail. The optimized nanosheet arrays were further coated with a NiO layer to achieve an even enhanced OER activity.

Abstract:A key challenge in carrying out an efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the design of a highly efficient electrocatalyst that must have fast kinetics, low cost and high stability for use in an energy-conversion device (e.g. metal-air batteries). Herein, we developed a platinum-free ORR electrocatalyst with a high surface area and pore volume via a molten salt method along with subsequent KOH activation. The activation treatment not only increases the surface area to 940.8 m(2) g(-1) by generating lots of pores, but also promotes the formation of uniform Fe3C nanoclusters within the atomic dispersed Fe-N-x carbon matrix in the final material (A-FeNC). A-FeNC displays excellent activity and long-term stability for the ORR in alkaline media, and shows a greater half-wave potential (0.85 V) and faster kinetics toward four-electron ORR as compared to those of 20 wt% Pt/C (0.83 V). As a cathode catalyst for the Zn-air battery, A-FeNC presents a peak power density of 102.2 mW cm(-2), higher than that of the Pt/C constructed Zn-air battery (57.2 mW cm(-2)). The superior ORR catalytic performance of A-FeNC is ascribed to the increased exposure of active sites, active single-atom Fe-N-C centers, and enhancement by Fe3C nanoclusters.

Abstract:The combination of highly active materials with judicious nanostructures is crucial to develop high-performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which involves sluggish multistep electron transfer processes. Herein, TiN nanowire arrays are used as conductive trunks to support active Ni-doped Co3O4 (Ni0.27Co2.73O4) nanosheets to construct a binder-free three-dimensional (3D) electrode for OER. In the core@shell configuration, the TiN nanowire arrays possess a single-crystal-like structure favoring charge migration and the ultrathin Ni0.27Co2.73O4 nanosheets have a mesoporous structure providing more active sites. The hierarchically branched morphology, high conductivity and large surface area can be achieved simultaneously by the optimization in composition and nanostructure, which contributes to excellent electrochemical performances. The TiN@Ni0.27Co2.73O4 electrode shows much better OER activity than the Ni-doped Co3O4 nanosheets deposited on planar Ti substrate and low conductive TiO2 nanowire arrays. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Highly Active Cofe Alloy Nanoparticlesencapsulated in N-Doped Carbon Nanostructures for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Both Alkaline and Acidic Media

Abstract:We report our facile and efficient approach for synthesizing Co-Fe alloy based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts, in which alloy nanoparticles are encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanostructures. The catalysts with high hierarchical porosities are fabricated at an appropriate temperature of 775 degrees C without a further acid leaching treatment after pyrolysis due to the use of ZnO nanoparticles as auto -removable templates. Co/Fe atomic ratio is found to greatly influence the ORR catalytic activity. The catalyst with Co/Fe = 1 exhibits the best catalytic performance by showing an ORR onset potential of 0.99 V and a half-wave potential of 0.87 V (vs. RHE) in 0.1 M KOH, as well as 0.98 V and 0.83 V (vs. RHE) in 0.5 M H2SO4, better than or approaching the performance presented by a commercial 28.6 wt% Pt/C catalyst. The Zn-air battery using the synthesized CoFe@N-C catalyst delivers a higher power density at ambient conditions by air-breathing than the one using the 28.6 wt% Pt/C catalyst. Relatively higher atomic concentrations of both Fe and Co as well as more graphitic nitrogen in the surface of CoFe@N-C detected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) may account for its excellent ORR catalytic activities both in alkaline and acidic en-vironments.

Abstract:Abstract Regulating the local configuration of atomically dispersed transition-metal atom catalysts is the key to oxygen electrocatalysis performance enhancement. Unlike the previously reported single-atom or dual-atom configurations, we designed a new type of binary-atom catalyst, through engineering Fe-N 4 electronic structure with adjacent Co-N 2 C 2 and nitrogen-coordinated Co nanoclusters, as oxygen electrocatalysts. The resultant optimized electronic structure of the Fe-N 4 active center favors the binding capability of intermediates and enhances oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in both alkaline and acid conditions. In addition, anchoring M–N–C atomic sites on highly graphitized carbon supports guarantees of efficient charge- and mass-transports, and escorts the high bifunctional catalytic activity of the entire catalyst. Further, through the combination of electrochemical studies and in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy analyses, the ORR degradation mechanisms under highly oxidative conditions during oxygen evolution reaction processes were revealed. This work developed a new binary-atom catalyst and systematically investigates the effect of highly oxidative environments on ORR electrochemical behavior. It demonstrates the strategy for facilitating oxygen electrocatalytic activity and stability of the atomically dispersed M–N–C catalysts.

Abstract:N-doped carbon-confined transition metal nanocatalysts display efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance comparable to commercial Pt/C electrocatalysts because of their efficient charge transfer from metal atoms to active N sites. However, the sheathed active sites inside the electrocatalysts and relatively large-size confined metal particles greatly restrict their activity improvement. Here, we develop a facile and efficient "MOFs plus ZIFs" synthesis strategy to successfully construct ultrafine sub-5 nm Co nanodots confined into superficial N-doped carbon nanowires (@NC) via a well-designed synthesis process. The unique synthesis mechanism is based on low-pressure vapor superassembly of thin zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) coatings on metal–organic framework substrates. During the successive pyrolysis, the preferential formation of the robust N-doped carbon shell from the ZIF-67 shell keeps the core morphology without shrinkage and limits the growth of Co nanodots. Benefiting from this architecture with accessible and rich active N sites on the surface, stable carbon confined architecture, and large surface area, the @NC exhibits excellent ORR performance, catching up to commercial Pt/C. Abstract:Herein, an approach is reported for fabrication of Co-Nx -embedded 1D porous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with graphitic carbon-encased Co nanoparticles originated from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which is further explored as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Electrochemical results reveal that the electrocatalyst prepared by pyrolysis at 1000 °C (CoNC-CNF-1000) exhibits excellent catalytic activity toward ORR that favors the four-electron ORR process and outstanding long-term stability with 86% current retention after 40 000 s. Meanwhile, it also shows superior electrocatalytic activity toward OER, reaching a lower potential of 1.68 V at 10 mA cm-2 and a potential gap of 0.88 V between the OER potential (at 10 mA cm-2 ) and the ORR half-wave potential. The ORR and OER performance of CoNC-CNF-1000 have outperformed commercial Pt/C and most nonprecious-metal catalysts reported to date. The remarkable ORR and OER catalytic performance can be mainly attributable to the unique 1D structure, such as higher graphitization degree beneficial for electronic mobility, hierarchical porosity facilitating the mass transport, and highly dispersed CoNx C active sites functionalized carbon framework. This strategy will shed light on the development of other MOF-based carbon nanofibers for energy storage and electrochemical devices.
Construction of Surface Lattice Oxygen in Metallic N−CuCoS1.97 Porous Nanowire for Wearable Zn−air Battery

Abstract:Achieving high activity and stability oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts to optimize the efficiency of metal-air battery, water splitting and other energy conversion devices, remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we demonstrate the metallic porous nanowires arrays with abundant defects via nitrogen and copper codoped CoS1.97 nanowires (N-CuCoS1.97 NWs). The N-CuCoS1.97 NWs can serve as an excellent OER self-supported electrode with an overpotential of 280 mV (j = 10 mA cm(-2)) and remarkable long-term stability. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) measurements confirmed the surface lattice oxygen created on the N-CuCoS1.97 NWs during OER. Then, the density function theory (DFT) results evident that lattice oxygen constructed surface of N-CuCoS1.97 NWs has more favorable OER energetic profiles and absorption for reaction intermediate. More importantly, the flexible and wearable Zn-air battery fabricated by the N-CuCoS1.97 NWs shows excellent rechargeable and mechanical stability, which can be used in portable mobile device. Co nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanotube materials derived from new metal-organic frameworks for oxygen electrocatalysis

Abstract:Bifunctional electrocatalysts used for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR/OER) are of great significance for metal-air batteries. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), after undergoing a high-temperature calcination process, emerge as promising precursors for preparing efficient metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) composites tailored specifically for electrocatalytic ORR/OER. Herein, we have successfully synthesized a novel rod-shaped MOF utilizing hydrazine hydrate and cobalt acetylacetonate as the building blocks, named Co-MOF. The Co-MOF has a tetrahedral Co-N 4 coordination structure and has a high N content. Upon undergoing the pyrolysis process, the corresponding M-N-C materials, featuring Co nanoparticles encapsulated within nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Co@N-CNT), were obtained. These Co@N-CNT materials exhibit remarkable bifunctional ORR and OER performance with a half-wave potential of 0.88 V (versus reversible hydrogen electrode, vs RHE) in 0.1 M KOH and an overpotential of 320 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH, respectively. Moreover, when integrated into a Zn-air battery, the Co@N-CNT catalyst demonstrates unparalleled activities, boasting a peak power density of 235 mW cm −2 and a long-term cycling stability that extends beyond 160 hours. Theoretical calculations further revealed that active Co atoms within Co@N-CNT possess a high density of states (DOS) proximate to the Fermi level, coupled with a favorably low d-band center, both of which synergistically contribute to the enhanced ORR activity. This work offers profound insights into the fabrication of metal-encapsulated CNT materials based on novel frameworks enriched with Co, thereby creating a new path for the development of high-performance energy storage and conversion systems.

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate that nonprecious CoFe-based oxide nanoarrays exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity and superior stability for electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at large current densities (>500 mA cm-2). Carbon fiber paper (CFP) with three-dimensional macroporous structure, excellent corrosion resistance, and high electrical properties is used as the support material to prevent surface passivation during the long-term process of OER. Through a facile method of hydrothermal synthesis and thermal treatment, vertically aligned arrays of spinel Co xFe3- xO4 nanostructures are homogeneously grown on CFP. The morphology and the Fe-doping content of the CoFe oxide nanoarrays can be controlled by the Fe3+ concentration in the precursor solution. The arrays of CoFe oxide nanosheets (NSs) grown on CFP (Co2.3Fe0.7O4-NSs/CFP) deliver lower Tafel slope (34.3 mV dec-1) than CoFe oxide nanowire (NW) arrays grown on CFP (Co2.7Fe0.3O4-NWs/CFP) in alkaline solution, owing to higher Fe-doping content and larger effective specific surface area. The Co2.3Fe0.7O4-NSs/CFP electrode exhibits excellent stability for OER at large current densities in alkaline solution. Moreover, the morphology and structure of CoFeO nanoarrays are well preserved after long-term testing, indicating the high stability for OER.

Abstract:In recent years, transition metal catalysts due to their low price, excellent conductivity and high activity have been extensively studied in OER. It is worth noting that Co3+ plays a vital role in the process of oxygen evolution catalysis, because Co3+ ions are considered to be active sites. The development of catalysts with high Co3+ content has important application prospects for improving water oxidation efficiency. This paper uses a simple ligand-assisted synthesis method to promote the transformation of two-dimensional layered double hydroxides (LDHs) into two-dimensional metal organic frameworks (MOFs). MOF-OH/NF are quickly and easily prepared by electrooxidation, which exhibit superior OER properties, with a low overpotential of 260 mV and 420 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 100 mA cm−2 and 1000 mA cm−2. Moreover, the MOF-OH/NF has good stability in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte solution. This study provides a new idea for the design and synthesis of novel composite electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials doped with nitrogen/transition metals (metal-N-C) are promising to substitute platinum (Pt) for catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Metal N-C can be effectively derived from pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks but usually suffers from microscale aggregation. Herein, we report an in situ approach to anchor zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF-67)-derived Co, N-doped porous carbon on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), labeled CNTs@Co-N-PC, and investigate its performance as electrocatalysts for the ORR in alkaline medium. This strategy combines pyrolysis with acid etching of ZIF-67 to convert its Co-N-4 frames into stable and dense Co, N-doped porous carbon on the surface of MWCNTs. In the core-shell-like CNTs@Co-N-PC hybrid catalysts, the MWCNTs serving as supports effectively inhibit the aggregation of Co-N-PC and therefore guarantee sufficient active sites available for the occurrence of the ORR. Consequently, these CNTs@Co-N-PC electrocatalysts exhibit comparable activity to commercial Pt/C and are featured with favorable long-term durability and superior methanol tolerance.

Abstract:Herein, we first propose a facile strategy to synthesize Co9S8 and MoS2 nanocrystals embedded in porous carbon nanoflake arrays supported on carbon nanofibers (Co9S8-MoS2/N-CNAs@CNFs) by the pyrolysis of Mo-doped Zn, Co zeolitic imidazolate framework grown on carbon nanofibers and subsequent sulfuration. The electrocatalyst shows high and stable electrocatalytic performance, with a half-wave potential of 0.82 V for oxygen reduction reaction and an overpotential at 10 mA cm-2 for oxygen evolution reaction (0.34 V) and hydrogen evolution reaction (0.163 V), which outperform the metal-organic framework-derived transition metal sulfide catalysts reported so far. Furthermore, the Co9S8-MoS2@N-CNAs@CNFs are employed as an air cathode in a liquid-state and all-solid-state zinc-air battery, presenting high power densities of 222 and 96 mW cm-2, respectively. Such excellent catalytic activities are mainly owing to the unique three-dimensional structure and chemical compositions, optimal electronic conductivity, adequate surface area, and the abundance of active sites. Thus, this work provides an important method for designing other metal-organic framework-derived three-dimensional structural sulfide quantum dot multifunctional electrocatalysts for wider application in highly efficient catalysis and energy storage.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanoporous heterostructured composites formed by uniformly coating individual monolayers with porous layers introduce unparalleled opportunities to improve and optimize the electrochemical performances of 2D materials. Here, an all-porous carbon heterostructure composed of 2D microporous carbon nanoflakes uniformly decorated with carbon nanodots has been developed. Interestingly, resol-F127 micelles self-assemble on the surface of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) nanoflakes in the form of a nanodot array, yielding a heterostructure. Hydrothermal treatment followed by carbonization under a nitrogen atmosphere causes conversion of the nanodot–nanoflake assembly into a carbon-based material composed of hollow carbon nanodots (CNDs) and microporous carbon nanoflakes (CNFs), that is, a composite. The combination of 2D microporous carbon nanoflakes with carbon hollow nanodots enhances exposure of the active sites and improves mass transfer in all directions (including through the nanoflakes). The use of cobalt (Co)-containing ZIF leads to the synthesis of a Co–Nx-doped composite, which exhibits oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalytic activity and long-term stability superior even to commercial Pt/C catalysts. Abstract:Porous carbon materials doped with atomically dispersed metal sites (ADMSs) are promising electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysis. In this work, we fabricated hierarchical porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers with atomically dispersed Fe-N4 sites by carbonization of electrospinning iron-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)/polyacrylonitrile nano-fibers for ORR electrocatalysis. Remarkably, the resultant carbon nanofibers with atomically dispersed Fe-N4 sites exhibit extraordinary electrochemical performance with an onset potential of 0.994 V and a halfwave potential of 0.876 V in alkaline electrolyte, comparable to the benchmark commercial Pt/C catalyst. The high catalytic performance is originated from the unique hierarchically porous 1D carbon structure and abundant highly active atomically dispersed Fe-N4 sites.

Abstract:Nitrogen-enriched core–shell structured Fe/Fe3C–C (N–Fe/Fe3C@C) nanorods have been successfully synthesized and demonstrated as promising oxygen reduction reaction catalysts with high activity and improved kinetics. The N–Fe/Fe3C@C nanorods, when used as cathode catalysts in microbial fuel cells, outperform the commercial Pt/C-based cathode at the maximum power output. Both N-dopant and core–Fe3C are believed to play key roles for the improved catalytic performance of N–Fe/Fe3C@C. Notably, the N–Fe/Fe3C@C features an ultra-low cost and excellent long-term stability, as discussed by X. L. Feng, Z. He, J. H. Chen and co-workers on page 1399.
Nickel-doped Co4N Nanowire Bundles As Efficient Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Cost-efficient electrocatalysts composed of earth-abundant elements are highly desired for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER). As a promising candidate, metallic Co 4 N already demonstrated electrocatalytic performance relying on specific nanostructures and electronic configurations. Herein, nickel was introduced as the dopant into one-dimensional (1D) hierarchical Co 4 N structures, achieving effective electronic regulation of Co 4 N toward high OER performance. The amount of Co 3+ increased after Ni-doping, and the in-situ formed surface oxyhydroxide during OER enhanced the electrocatalytic kinetics. Meanwhile, the 1D hierarchical structure further promoted the performances of Co 4 N owing to the high electrical conductivity and abundant active-sites on the rough surface. As expected, the optimal Ni-doped Co 4 N with a Ni/Co molar ratio of 0.25 provides a small overpotential of 233 mV at a current density of 10 mAcm −2 , with a low Tafel slope of 61 mV dec −1 , and high long-term stability in 1.0 mol L −1 KOH. Following these results, the enhancement by doping the Co 4 N nanowire bundles with Fe and Cu was further evidenced for the OER.
