Abstract:As a metal-free semiconductor material, graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4), the high recombination rate of photogenerated charges and insufficient sunlight absorption limit its solar-based photocatalytic activity. Here, we reported the heterojunctions of C3N4–Cu2O with a p–n junction structure, which was synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The HR-TEM result revealed an intimate interface between C3N4 and Cu2O in the heterojunction, and UV–vis diffuse reflection spectra showed their extended spectral response in the visible region compared with pure C3N4. These excellent structural and spectral properties, as well as p–n junction structures, endowed the C3N4–Cu2O heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic activities. The possible photocatalytic mechanism that photogenerated holes as the mainly oxidant species in photocatalysis was proposed base on the trapping experiments.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4) was hybridized by Bi2WO6 via a hydrothermal method. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) results reveal that an intimate interface between C3N4 and Bi2WO6 forms in the heterojunctions. The UV-vis diffuse reflection spectra show that the resulting C3N4-Bi2WO6 heterojunctions possess more intensive absorption within the visible light range in comparison with pure Bi2WO6. These excellent structural and spectral properties endowed the C3N4-Bi2WO6 heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic activities. Significantly, the optimum photocatalytic activity of the 0.5C(3)N(4)-0.5Bi(2)WO(6) heterojunction for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) was almost 3 and 155 times higher than those of either individual C3N4 or Bi2WO6. The possible photocatalytic mechanism with superoxide radical species as the main active species in photocatalysis is proposed on the basis of experimental results. Moreover, the heterojunction depicted high stability and durability during six successive cycles.

Abstract:A novel and facile template-free method was presented to fabricate a porous g-C3N4 (graphite-like carbon nitaide) by combining ultrasonic treatment with hydrothermal modification in the presence of sulfuric acid. Particle size analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) were adopted to analyze its structure, morphology and properties. And the photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared samples were also evaluated by decomposing methyl orange (MO) and Rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous solution under visible light illumination. The results show that combining ultrasonic treatment with hydrothermal modification is favorable to improve the porosity of g-C3N4, which can increase the ability to absorb pollutants and inhibit the recombination of photo-generated carriers, thereby enhancing the visible-light photocatalytic property.

Abstract:Enhancing catalytic visible light capture and light utilization efficiency represent an important objective in graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) research. Herein, a novel sulfur-containing thiophene-grafted g-C3N4 porous nanosheets (CM-CN-Th A) prepared via co-thermal polycondensation of supramolecular self-assembled precursors (CM) and 3-thiophenecarboxylic acid (Th A) is reported. The introduction of thiophene groups improved the optical properties of the synthesized catalyst in the visible range, enhanced charge carrier separation, and suppressed e-/h+ pair complexation compared to pristine g-C3N4. Various analytical techniques were employed to characterize the structure, morphology, and electrical and optical features of the synthesized catalysts. In the removal of rhodamine B (Rh B) from aqueous media, CM-CN-Th A displayed favorable photocatalytic activity (rate constant k of 0.0360 min−1) under visible light illumination (λ > 420 nm), with photocatalytic removal effieciency of 89.22%, mineralization efficiency of 45.34%; this value was maintained after five cycles. The catalyst also delivers superior photocatalytic activity for methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB), and crystalline violet (CV) degradation, demonstrating wide applicability for dye wastewater treatment. In addition, a possible photocatalytic mechanism of CM-CN-Th A is proposed by analyzing the experimental results of active species capture. This work offers a novel approach for the photodegradation of dye wastewater.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride as a photocatalyst seeking attention nowadays, due to its thermal stability, band structure, and chemical properties. Herein, we reported a boron sulfur co-doped graphitic carbon nitride (B@S-g-C 3 N 4 ) photocatalyst synthesized by a one-pot thermal polycondensation mechanism. However, it was observed that due to co-doping in native carbon nitride structure the photocatalytic behavior and the band structure enhanced which was capable of fascinating the demand of organic transformations i.e. photocatalytic and charge transfer capability. The synthesized B@S-g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst was characterized by UV–vis DRS, FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDX, HR-TEM, XPS and electrochemical properties. In addition, the synthesized B@S-g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst is a metal-free carbon nitride photocatalyst proven to be highly effective in performing organic transformations (conversion yield 98 %) like C-N bond formation under visible light source.

Abstract:The key to solving environmental and energy issues through photocatalytic technology requires highly efficient, stable and eco-friendly photocatalysts. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is one of the most promising candidates except for its limited photoactivity. In this work, a facile and scalable one-step method is developed to fabricate an efficient heterostructural g-C3N4 photocatalyst in situ coupled with MoS2. The strong coupling effect between the MoS2 nanosheets and g-C3N4 scaffold, numerous mesopores and enlarged specific surface area helped form an effective heterojunction. As such, the photocatalytic activity of the g-C3N4/MoS2 is more than three times higher than that of the pure g-C3N4 in the degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. Improvement of g-C3N4/MoS2 photocatalytic performance is mainly ascribed to the effective suppression of the recombination of charge carriers.

Abstract:The development of robust and reliable methods for the construction of C(sp2)–C(sp3) bonds is vital for accessing an increased array of structurally diverse scaffolds in drug discovery and development campaigns. While significant advances towards this goal have been achieved using metallaphotoredox chemistry, many of these methods utilise photocatalysts based on precious-metals due to their efficient redox processes and tuneable properties. However, due to the cost, scarcity, and toxicity of these metals, the search for suitable replacements should be a priority. Here, we show the use of commercially available heterogeneous semiconductor graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) as a photocatalyst, combined with nickel catalysis, for the cross-coupling between aryl halide and carboxylic acid coupling partners. gCN has been shown to engage in single-electron-transfer (SET) and energy-transfer (EnT) processes for the formation of C–X bonds, and in this manuscript we overcome previous limitations to furnish C–C over C–O bonds using carboxylic acids. A broad scope of both aryl halides and carboxylic acids is presented, and recycling of the photocatalyst demonstrated. The mechanism of the reaction is also investigated.

Abstract:Nonmetal doping is a convenient method to adjust the visible light photocatalytic activity of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). Herein, highly active sulfur-doped porous g-C3N4 (C3N4-S) was successfully prepared by one-step calcination using thiourea and melamine as the precursors. C3N4-S exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation. C3N4-S not only promoted the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, but also enhanced electron transfer, resulting in a great improvement in the photocatalytic efficiency. Based on capture experiments and DMPO spin-trapping ESR spectra, the superoxide radical (˙O2-) was proved to be the predominant active species and the possible photocatalytic mechanism of C3N4-S was proposed. The photocatalytic mechanism of RhB degradation over C3N4-S was further explored using high-resolution mass spectra (HRMS).

Abstract:An oxygen atom-doped modification strategy was developed to improve the photocatalytic activity of graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4), which was successfully employed as a reusable photocatalyst in the cascade annulation reaction of N-sulfonyl ketimines with N-aryl glycines. The oxygen-doped g-C3N4 (denoted as OCN) displays better catalytic performance than bulk g-C3N4 under visible light irradiation. Moreover, this heterogeneous photocatalyst can be easily recovered and recycled at least 5 times without loss of activity. Such a strategy would offer an expansion for the development of novel heterogeneous photocatalysts and their applications in organic synthesis.

Abstract:Doping metallic and nonmetallic elements in the graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) molecular layer to tune its band structure is an important strategy for improving its photocatalytic activity. Herein, sulfur- and strontium-doped g-C3N4 catalysts are synthesized by calcining the mixture of urea, 2-thiobarbituric acid, and strontium chloride hexahydrate at elevated temperature. The optimal hydrogen production rate of 6Sr-SCN (SCN, sulfur-doped graphitic carbon nitride) reaches 13.9 μmol/h, about 6.6 times that of pure g-C3N4, abridged as CN, under visible light irradiation with λ ≥ 420 nm. An experimental study and theoretical simulation demonstrate that S and Sr doping narrows the band gap, forms an intraplane heterojunction, extends the harvest in the visible light range and the transport and separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, and increases molecular buckling and specific surface area as well. All these factors are synergistically combined to improve the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4.

Cyano-rich mesoporous carbon nitride nanospheres for visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of pollutants

Abstract:Visible-light-responsive photocatalysis offers exciting opportunities for sustainable environmental pollution control, but the unsatisfactory photoactivity of the existing photocatalysts impedes their practical application. Here, we fabricated a high-activity mesoporous carbon nitride nanosphere (MCNS) photocatalyst by a hard template synthesis method through incomplete polycondensation of the cyanamide precursors during thermal polymerization. The MCNS showed a unique nanosphere structure with a larger specific surface area and possessed more abundant cyano groups than two other graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) materials (i.e., nanosheet and bulk g-C3N4). Experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate important roles of the cyano groups in narrowing the catalyst band gap to favor visible light absorption and accelerating the separation of the electron–hole pairs. With such superior surface properties and improved charge separation efficiency, the MCNS exhibited 14.7 times higher photocatalytic activity for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation than the bulk g-C3N4. The MCNS also showed good stability during repeated use. Therefore, the as-prepared MCNS has great potential for visible-light-responsive photocatalysis in environmental remediation and other photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Porous graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (PMCNS) photocatalyst with a specific surface area of 92.75 m2 g−1 was prepared by ammonium carbonate guide structure in a one-pot strategy. Compared with bulk graphitic carbon nitride (MCN), the pores in the PMCNS formed by curling and sealing of the lamella provide more active sites, which promote charge separation and transfer, and inhibit the recombination of photoexcited electron and hole pairs. To confirm our strategy, the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and hydrogen evolution ability of PMCNS under visible light were performed, and a significant enhancement was observed, the efficiencies are 12.8 and 3.8 times that of MCN, respectively. This work provides an approach for reconstruction of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) structure to improve the photocatalytic oxidation and reduction capabilities under visible light.

Insights into the Role of C-S-C Bond in C 3 N 5 for Photocatalytic NO Deep Oxidation: Experimental and DFT Exploration

Abstract:Non-stoichiometric polymer carbon nitride of C 3 N 5 is becoming an important visible-light-type catalyst due to the narrow bandgap, non-toxicity, and thermal stability. Here, we report a sulfur doping strategy for upgrading the photogenerated carriers' dynamics of C 3 N 5 . Studies on the transient diffuse reflectance spectra prove that the lifetime of photogenerated carriers of sulfur-doped C 3 N 5 (S-C 3 N 5 ) increases 61.6%. The widened visible-light responsive range and enhanced structural defects are also confirmed by UV-vis DRS and ESR characterizations. DFT calculations also verify the better NO adsorption and activation as well as give an insight into the mechanism of NO conversion from the molecule level. Such unique properties endow S-C 3 N 5 with a 4.9- and 5.1-fold increase in photocatalytic NO removal efficiency and rate respectively compared to C 3 N 5 . In-situ DRIFTS tests demonstrate the excellent NO deep-oxidation capability of S-C 3 N 5 . Ten-cycle NO removal experiments prove its reusability and durability.

Abstract:Herein, the high efficiency of carbon nitride photocatalysis for hydrogen evolution in visible light is achieved by an S‐modified double‐deficient site (N‐vacancy, cyano) strategy. The cyano group acts as an electron trap to capture photoexcited electrons, providing the active site for the reduction of H+ to hydrogen. The accumulation of charge at the cyano provides a strong driving force for the directional transfer of photogenerated carriers. Graphitic carbon nitride (gC3N4) is an attractive photocatalyst for solar energy conversion due to its unique electronic structure and chemical stability. However, gC3N4 generally suffers from insufficient light absorption and rapid compounding of photogenerated charges. The introduction of defects and atomic doping can optimize the electronic structure of gC3N4 and improve the light absorption and carrier separation efficiency. Herein, the high efficiency of carbon nitride photocatalysis for hydrogen evolution in visible light is achieved by an S‐modified double‐deficient site strategy. Defect engineering forms abundant unsaturated sites and cyano (─C≡N), which promotes strong interlayer C─N bonding interactions and accelerates charge transport in gC3N4. S doping tunes the electronic structure of the semiconductors, and the formation of C─S─C bonds optimizes the electron‐transfer paths of the C─N bonding, which enhances the absorption of visible light. Meanwhile,C≡N acts as an electron trap to capture photoexcited electrons, providing the active site for the reduction of H+ to hydrogen. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficiency of SDCN (1613.5 μmol g−1 h−1) is 31.5 times higher than that of pristine MCN (51.2 μmol g−1 h−1). The charge separation situation and charge transfer mechanism of the photocatalysts are investigated in detail by a combination of experimental and theoretical calculations.
