Abstract:A metal-free N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) catalyzed aerobic oxidative cleavage of olefins has been developed. Molecular oxygen is used as the oxidant and reagent for this oxygenation reaction. This methodology has prevented the use of toxic metals or overstoichiometric amounts of traditional oxidants, showing good economical and environmental advantages. Based on the experimental observations, a plausible mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:An efficient direct C(sp3)-H oxidation of diarylmethanes has been demonstrated by this study. This method employs environment-friendly O-2 as an oxidant and is promoted by commercially available MN(SiMe3)(2) [M = K, Na or Li], which provides a facile method for the synthesis of various diaryl ketones in excellent yields. This protocol is metal-free, mild and compatible with a number of functional groups on substrates.

Abstract:The selective oxo-functionalization of hydrocarbons under mild conditions with molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant continues to be a hot topic in organic synthesis and industrial chemistry. Though many oxidation protocols in combination with transition metal salts, enzymes, organometallic catalysts, or organocatalysts have been summarized recently, a review that focuses solely on the metal-free allylic/benzylic oxidation strategies with molecular oxygen is still unavailable. This critical review will summarize recent significant advances achieved in this important field under the scope of green chemistry, which covers the promising applications and brief mechanistic profiles involving three kinds of efficient catalysts, namely N-hydroxyimides, homogeneous/heterogeneous light-sensitive molecules, and heteroatom-doped carbon materials, and concerns the sustainability of these methods, as well as predicts the potential utilization of available but unreported analogous catalysts or catalytic systems in this field. Special emphasis will also be placed on the burgeoning metal-free strategies with visible light irradiation from the long-term greenness and sustainability of these oxidation processes due to their established appealing performances under ambient conditions.

Abstract:A metal-free, visible-light-induced oxidative C-C bond cleavage of cycloketones with molecular oxygen is described. Cooperative Brønsted-acid catalysis and photocatalysis enabled selective C-C bond cleavage of cycloketones to generate an array of γ-, δ- and ϵ-keto esters under very mild conditions. Mechanistic studies indicate that singlet molecular oxygen (1 O2 ) is responsible for this transformation.

Abstract:Herein, metal-free oxidative tandem cross-dehydrogenative coupling of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds with N,N-dimethylanilines is developed. The reaction affords two new C(sp(3))-C(sp(3)) bonds in one pot. A broad range of ss-dicarbonyl compounds and N,N-dimethylanilines were compatible, and the desired products were synthesized in moderate-to-good yields.

Abstract:With the growing significance of green chemistry in organic synthesis, electrochemical oxidation has seen rapid development. Compounds undergo oxidation–reduction reactions through electron transfer at the electrode surface. This article proposes the use of electrochemical methods to achieve cleavage of the benzyl C–N bond. This method selectively oxidatively cleaves the C–N bond without the need for metal catalysts or external oxidants. Additionally, primary, secondary, and tertiary amines exhibit good adaptability under these conditions, utilizing water as the sole source of oxygen.

Abstract:An efficient TEMPO-catalyzed oxidative C-C bond formation with two Csp(3)-H bonds using molecular oxygen as the oxidant has been developed. The novel transformation provides a new strategy for the TEMPO-O-2 catalysis to construct C-C bonds. The advantages of this method include: (1) relatively mild and neutral conditions; (2) simplicity and safety of operation; (3) a stoichiometric amount of dangerous oxidants, any transition metals, additives, even solvent, is not required.

Abstract:A scalable electrochemical strategy for oxidation of various benzylic C‐X bonds to carbonyl groups was achieved. The protocol runs under mild reaction condition and air atmosphere with simple undivided electrolysis cell, H2O as oxygen source and cheap graphite plates as both anode and cathode. In addition, the electrolysis strategy features good functional groups tolerance for selectively generating structure versatile ketones, aldehydes and esters.

Abstract:We present here an iron‐catalyzed oxidative Csp3–Csp3 bond cleavage of unstrained tertiary alkyl aromatics to provide a range of synthetically useful arylketones even with H2O2 as the oxidant. This method is operationally simple, scalable, and eco‐friendly, as well as suitable for the late‐stage oxidation of complex molecules bearing hydroxy groups, making it a valuable tool in organic synthesis.

Abstract:The preparation of carbonyl compounds by the aerobic oxidative cleavage of C-C bonds in 1,2-diols under mild reaction conditions is a very significant reaction and is widely employed in various scenarios. Avoiding the use of harmful stoichiometric oxidants and adopting a greener chemical process remain a challenge for this reaction to date. In this manuscript, a heterogeneous metal-free photocatalytic strategy without any additive was developed for aerobic oxidative cleavage of C-C bonds in 1,2-diols at ambient conditions with visible light. The reaction mechanism was further studied through a series of control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, the catalytic system showed a broad substrates scope, including aliphatic (linear or cyclic) 1,2-diols, benzylic, alkenyl 1,2-diols, and alpha-hydroxy acids (such as lactic acid). Thus, this strategy could serve as a method for the transformation of 1,2-diols to corresponding carbonyl compounds by the aerobic oxidative cleavage of C-C bonds.

Abstract:Metal-free aerobic oxidation of aryl sulfides to sulfoxides and sulfones has been developed in the presence of aliphatic aldehydes with excellent selectivity and yields. The reaction proceeded under mild conditions with the catalysis of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). Control experiments indicated that the reaction underwent a free radical pathway with the acylperoxyl radicals generated from aldehydes in situ as the key intermediates. The aromatic aldehydes were less efficient in the sulfide oxidation, which might be explained by the fact that the aromatic ring dispersed the electrons of free radicals and thus weakened the attacking ability of peroxy free radicals.
