Abstract:A new system consisting of a copper(I) complex generated in situ from a tetradentate nitrogen ligand and CuI in combination with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) derivatives was successfully developed. The system was suitable for efficient and selective aerobic oxidation of primary benzyl and allyl alcohols with a wide range of functional groups to the corresponding aldehydes at room temperature. The best result was obtained with N,N’-dimethyl-N,N’-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine as the ligand and 4-OH-TEMPO as a cocatalyst in CH3CN. In addition, high-resolution mass spectrometry, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and electrochemical experiments were used to provide evidence of intermediates.

Abstract:An efficient TEMPO-catalyzed oxidative C-C bond formation with two Csp(3)-H bonds using molecular oxygen as the oxidant has been developed. The novel transformation provides a new strategy for the TEMPO-O-2 catalysis to construct C-C bonds. The advantages of this method include: (1) relatively mild and neutral conditions; (2) simplicity and safety of operation; (3) a stoichiometric amount of dangerous oxidants, any transition metals, additives, even solvent, is not required.

Abstract:AbstractHydrochloric acid, a very inexpensive and readily available inorganic acid, has been found to cooperate exquisitely with NaNO2/TEMPO in catalyzing the molecular‐oxygen‐driven oxidation of a broad range of alcohol substrates to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones. This transition‐metal‐free catalytic oxidative conversion is novel and represents an interesting alternative route to the corresponding carbonyl compounds to the metal‐catalyzed aerobic oxidation of alcohols. The reaction is highly selective with respect to the desired product when carried out at room temperature in air at atmospheric pressure. Notably, the use of very inexpensive NaNO2 and HCl in combination with TEMPO for this highly selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols in air at ambient temperature makes the reaction operationally and economically very attractive. The results of mechanistic studies, performed with the aid of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI‐MS), are presented and discussed. TEMPO, TEMPOH, and TEMPO+ were observed in the redox cycle by means of ESI‐MS. On the basis of these observations, a mechanism is proposed that may provide an insight into the newly developed aerobic alcohol oxidation.

Abstract:A variety of 4-substituted 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidyl-1-oxy (TEMPO) derivatives has been screened for their ability in the oxidation of primary alcohols to the aldehydes with dioxygen under mild conditions. An evaluation of the efficiency of these 4-substituted TEMPO derivatives in the alcohol oxidation may allow an insight into the effect of the structural variations of TEMPO on the oxidation of alcohols, which should facilitate catalyst design and screening efforts. Based on the screening results of 4-substituted TEMPO derivatives, the catalyst comprised of 4-acetamido-TEMPO, iron chloride and sodium nitrite, has been developed for the highly efficient oxidation of a wide range of primary alcohols including primary aliphatic alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes under mild conditions.

Abstract:An entirely metal-free catalyst system consisting of an easily prepared recyclable new TEMPO derived sulfonic salt catalyst, and mineral acids (NaNO2 and HCl) has been developed for selective aerobic oxidation of structurally diverse benzylic sp(3) C-H bonds of ethers and alkylarenes. The mild reaction conditions allow for the generation of synthetically and biologically valued isochromanones and xanthones from readily accessible alkyl aromatic precursors in good yields.
