Abstract:A concise and straightforward strategy to construct a xanthone skeleton via an intramolecular cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) of 2-aryloxybenzaldehydes has been developed. The reaction proceeded smoothly without any need of preactivation of the aldehyde group. It can tolerate various functional groups and provides an applicable protocol to construct a wide range of xanthone derivatives.

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:This paper reports the use of rhodium (Rh) catalysts for the oxidative coupling reaction between phenylacetylene and benzaldehyde derivatives via C-H bond activation. These reactions were catalyzed by Rh(l-amino acid)(cod) (the l-amino acid is l-phenylalanine, l-valine or l-proline; cod is 1,5-cyclooctadiene) to obtain chromones in 12.7–88.3% yield. These new Rh catalysts have excellent activity for the coupling reaction between phenylacetylene and different benzaldehyde derivatives. It was found that the electronic effects of the benzaldehyde derivative substituent affected the reaction yield, which is in accordance with the proposed mechanism.

Abstract:A novel aldehydic C−H functionalization reaction between salicylaldehydes and sulfoxonium ylides has been developed under rhodium(III) catalysis, affording coupling products in moderate to good yields. A plausible mechanism involving aldehydic C(sp2)−H activation by rhodium(III) and rhodium(III) catalyzed carbene insertion is also proposed. It was also found that the aldehydic C−H functionalization followed by dehydrative cyclization was able to produce flavonoids in one‐pot.

Abstract:Alkynyloxiranes have been employed for the first time as effective coupling partners in Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed C-H functionalization reactions. Their annulation with N-aryloxyamides then offers a redox-neutral and efficient synthesis of functionalized 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans bearing an exocyclic E-allylic alcohol and a tetrasubstituted carbon center in good yields with a broad substrate scope. The products can be easily converted to molecules with more complexity, which provides an opportunity for rapid assembly of structurally diverse heterocycles.

Abstract:A rhodium(III)-catalyzed cross-coupling of benzyl thioethers and aryl carboxylic acids through the two directing groups is reported. Useful structures with diverse substituents were efficiently synthesized in one step with the cleavage of four bonds (CH, CS, OH) and the formation of two bonds (CC, CO). The formed structure is the privileged core in natural products and bioactive molecules. This work highlights the power of using two different directing groups to enhance the selectivity of a double CH activation, the first of such examples in cross-oxidative coupling.
