Abstract:A major goal of intercalation chemistry is to intercalate high densities of guest species without disrupting the host lattice. Many intercalant concentrations, however, are limited by the charge of the guest species. Here we have developed a general solution-based chemical method for intercalating extraordinarily high densities of zero-valent copper metal into layered Bi(2)Se(3) nanoribbons. Up to 60 atom % copper (Cu(7.5)Bi(2)Se(3)) can be intercalated with no disruption to the host lattice using a solution disproportionation redox reaction.

Abstract:We have developed a chemical method to intercalate a variety of zerovalent metal atoms into two-dimensional (2D) layered Bi2Se3 chalcogenide nanoribbons. We use a chemical reaction, such as a disproportionation redox reaction, to generate dilute zerovalent metal atoms in a refluxing solution, which intercalate into the layered Bi2Se3 structure. The zerovalent nature of the intercalant allows superstoichiometric intercalation of metal atoms such as Ag, Au, Co, Cu, Fe, In, Ni, and Sn. We foresee the impact of this methodology in establishing novel fundamental physical behaviors and in possible energy applications.

Abstract:Intercalation of exotic atoms or molecules into the layered materials remains an extensively investigated subject in current physics and chemistry. However, traditionally melt-growth and chemical interaction strategies are either limited by insufficiency of intercalant concentrations or destitute of accurate controllability. Here, we have developed a general electrochemical intercalation method to efficaciously regulate the concentration of zerovalent copper atoms into layered Bi2Se3, followed by comprehensive experimental characterization and analyses. Up to 57% copper atoms (Cu6.7Bi2Se3) can be intercalated with no disruption to the host lattice. Meanwhile the unconventional resistance dip accompanied by a hysteresis loop below 40 K, as well as the emergence of new Raman peak in CuxBi2Se3, is a distinct manifestation of the interplay between intercalated Cu atoms with Bi2Se3 host. Our work demonstrates a new methodology to study fundamentally new and unexpected physical behaviors in intercalated metastable materials.

Abstract:CdSe/Cu core/shell nanowires (NWs) are successfully synthesized by a wet chemical method for the first time. By utilizing the solution–liquid–solid (SLS) mechanism, CdSe NWs are fabricated by Bi seeds, which act as catalysts. In the subsequent radial overcoating of the Cu shell on the CdSe NWs, Fe ions have been proven to be an indispensable and efficient catalyzer. The thickness of the Cu shell could be well controlled in the range of 3 to 6 nm by varying the growth temperature (from 300 to 360 °C). Our synthetic strategy pioneers a new possibility for the controlled synthesis of semiconductor–metal heterostructure NWs (especially for II–VI semiconductors), such as CdS/Cu, ZnS/Au, and ZnO/Ag, which had broad application prospects in photoconductors, thin-film transistors, and light-emitting diodes. Theoretically, electrons flow from a higher Fermi-level material to the bottom Fermi-level at the metal–semiconductor heterojunction interface, which aligns the Fermi level and establishes the Schottky barrier. It leads to excess negative charges in metals and excess positive charges in semiconductors. Therefore, those effective electron traps reduce the probability of photogenerated electron–hole pair recombination efficiently, which has been widely applied in solar cells, sensors, photocatalysis, and energy storage. Abstract:A rapid injection approach is used to synthesize the copper selenide nanoparticles and two-dimensional single crystal nanoplates. This technique excludes the use of toxic or expensive materials, increasing the availability of two-dimensional binary chalcogenide semiconductors. The structure of the nanocrystals has been studied and the possible formation mechanism of the nanoplates has been proposed. The optical absorption showed that the nanoplates demonstrated wide and tuneable absorption band in the visible and near infrared region. These nanoplates could be interesting for converting solar energy and for nanophotonic devices operating in the near infrared.

Abstract:Heterogeneous copper sulfide-based nanostructures have attracted intense attention based on their potential to combine the plasmonic properties of copper-deficient copper sulfides with properties of other semiconductors and metals. In general, copper sulfides are versatile platforms for production of other materials by cation incorporation and exchange processes. However, the outcomes of subsequent cation exchange (CE) or incorporation processes involving nanoheterostructure (NH) templates have not been explored. In this work, we incorporate indium and tin into CuS-ZnS NHs. We demonstrate that the outcomes of cation incorporation are strongly influenced by heterocation identity and valence and by the presence of a Cu-extracting agent. The selectivity of cation incorporation depends upon both the cation itself and the heterodomains in which CE reactions take place. The final nanocrystals (NCs) emerge in many forms including homogeneous NCs, heterodimers, core@shell NHs and NHs with three different domains. This selective cation incorporation not only facilitates the preparation of previous unavailable metal sulfide NHs but also provides insight into mechanisms of CE reactions.

Abstract:Despite the promising applications of copper selenide nanoparticles, an in-depth elucidation of the inherent properties of tetragonal Cu2Se (beta-Cu2Se) has not been performed because of the lack of a facile synthesis on the nanoscale and an energy-intensive strategy is usually employed. In this work, a facile wet-chemical strategy, employing HCOOH as reducing agent, has been developed to access single-crystalline metastable beta-Cu2Se hyperbranched architectures for the first time. The process avoids hazardous chemistry and high temperatures, and thus opens up a facile approach to the large-scale low-cost preparation of metastable beta-Cu2Se hyperbranched architectures. A possible growth mechanism to explain the formation of the beta-Cu2Se dendritic morphology has been proposed based on time-dependent shape evolution. Further investigations revealed that the metastable beta-Cu2Se can convert into the thermodynamically more stable cubic a-Cu2-xSe maintaining the dendritic morphology. An increase in electrical conductivity and a tunable optical response were observed under ambient conditions. This behavior can be explained by the oxidation of the surface of the beta-Cu2Se hyperbranched structures, ultimately leading to solid-state phase conversion from beta-Cu2Se into superionic conductor a-Cu1.8Se, which has potential applications in energy-related devices and sensors.

Abstract:A major outstanding challenge in the field of intercalation chemistry has been the insertion of heavy metals into a 2D layered material. Heavy metal intercalation is a promising route towards access of chemically tailored materials or enhancement of novel physics. We present a new series of wet chemical strategies to intercalate atomic heavy metal and semimetal species (Bi, Cr, Ge, Mn, Mo, Ni, Os, Pb, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Sb, and W) into layered chalcogenides. Bismuth selenide, Bi2Se3, and niobium diselenide, NbSe2, are used to demonstrate this chemistry. Atomic intercalation is performed in solution using decomposition of zero-valent coordination compounds at low temperatures (~50 °C–170 °C) or reduction with tin chloride. This host of chemical routes is non-destructive, general for chalcogens, and can be used to intercalate some lighter elements as well. These intercalation reactions more than double the current number of atomic intercalants and give access to unique physical properties including heterostructures, charge density waves, and polytypic superlattice structures.

Abstract:We present the one-dimensional polymeric structures of [Cu(SePh)]∞1 and [Cu(SeMe)]∞2 that were solved by using powder X-ray diffraction data. Using a field-effect transistor (FET) set-up, the hole mobility of complex 1 was found to be 4 × 10−2 cm2 V−1 s−1, comparable to that of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). Phase-pure orthorhombic and cubic Cu2Se were synthesized from 1 as a single precursor under vacuum and inert atmosphere, respectively.

Abstract:2D layered nanomaterials with strong covalent bonding within layers and weak van der Waals' interactions between layers have attracted tremendous interest in recent years. Layered Bi2Se3 is a representative topological insulator material in this family, which holds promise for exploration of the fundamental physics and practical applications such as transparent electrode. Here, a simultaneous enhancement of optical transmittancy and electrical conductivity in Bi2Se3 grid electrodes by copper-atom intercalation is presented. These Cu-intercalated 2D Bi2Se3 electrodes exhibit high uniformity over large area and excellent stabilities to environmental perturbations, such as UV light, thermal fluctuation, and mechanical distortion. Remarkably, by intercalating a high density of copper atoms, the electrical and optical performance of Bi2Se3 grid electrodes is greatly improved from 900 Omega sq(-1), 68% to 300 Omega sq(-1), 82% in the visible range; with better performance of 300 Omega sq(-1), 91% achieved in the near-infrared region. These unique properties of Cu-intercalated topological insulator grid nanostructures may boost their potential applications in high-performance optoelectronics, especially for infrared optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Reactions in superheated ethylenediamine (en) solutions at 160 degrees C resulted in two novel quaternary intermetallic copper selenides, RbCu1.2Ag3.8Se3(I) and Cs2Cu2Sb2Se5(II). Both I and II are metal rich and represent new layered structure types. Compound I crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system, space group P4/nbm (No. 125) with a 5.991(1) Angstrom, c=10.918(2) Angstrom, Z= 2, V=391.9(1) Angstrom(3), R1/wR2 = 0.0373/0.0458 for all reflections. Compound II belongs to the triclinic crystal system, space group P (1) over bar (No. 2), a 7.645(1) Angstrom, b = 8.768(2) Angstrom, 10.264(1) A, a = 91.97(2)degrees, beta = 92.07(2)degrees, gamma = 103.05(1)degrees Z= 2, V= 669.2(3) Angstrom(3), R1/wR2= 0.0685/0.0740 for all reflections. I consists of (2)(infinity)[(Cu1.2Ag3.8Se3)(-)] layers and Rb+ counterions located between these layers. There are two types of metal-to-selenium coordination, a square planar (Ag) and a trigonal pyramidal(Cu/Ag). The Se(1) atom displays an unusual eight coordination with Ag and Cu. II contains alternating (2)(infinity)[(Cu2Sb2Se5)(2-)] anionic and Cs+ cationic layers. Each copper atom has a distorted tetrahedral coordination to four Se atoms, and each antimony atom bonds to three Se atoms to result in a trigonal pyramidal geometry. Both I and II are semiconductors with estimated band gaps of 0.7-0.8 and 1.2-1.3 eV, respectively. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

Abstract:A novel method for producing stable copper nanoclusters by incorporating selenides into the framework has been developed. The resulting nanocluster, denoted as Cu32Se7, represents a pioneering example for the investigation of copper–selenide semiconductor nanoclusters. The Cu32Se7 cluster exhibits exceptional performance and high cyclability in the borohydration of alkynes. Copper nanoclusters with stable compositions and precise structures have long been sought after, as they possess properties that are absent in gold and silver counterparts. However, the creation of copper nanoclusters with novel compositions, structures, and functionalities remains largely unexplored in the literature. In this study, we demonstrate that selenide doping is an effective method for fabricating stable copper nanostructures through controlled synthesis and structure determination of a copper–selenide nanocluster. The nanocluster of [Cu32Se7(BnSe)18(PPh3)6]+ (denoted as Cu32Se7, Bn is benzyl) has been prepared by reducing copper salts in the presence of organic diselenides. The atomic structure of the Cu32Se7 cluster, accurately determined through single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, reveals a core–shell arrangement of Cu20Se7@Cu12(BnSe)18(PPh3)6, where Se2− anions are well dispersed in the Cu20 framework. Notably, this cluster represents a rare example of copper–selenide semiconductor nanoclusters. Experimental and theoretical analysis shows strong interactions between Se ligands and metal atoms, resulting in high stability of the Cu32Se7 cluster. Furthermore, the cluster exhibits excellent catalytic performance in the hydroboration reaction of alkynes, producing a range of vinylboron compounds with adjustable structures and functions. Importantly, the cluster undergoes no structural or nuclearity changes during the reaction, as confirmed by extended X‐ray absorption fine structure and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies. This study not only presents a molecular cluster model highlighting the effectiveness of selenide dopants in fabricating new copper nanostructures but also paves the way for utilizing stable copper nanoclusters in diverse and exciting areas beyond catalysis.

Abstract:Chemical modifications such as intercalation can be used to modify surface properties or to further functionalize the surface states of topological insulators. Using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we report copper migration in $\text{Cu}_{x}\text{Bi}_2\text{Se}_3$, which occurs on a timescale of hours to days after initial surface cleaving. The increase in near-surface copper proceeds along with the oxidation of the sample surface and large changes in the selenium content. These complex changes are further modelled with core-level spectroscopy simulations, which suggest a composition gradient near the surface which develops with oxygen exposure. Our results shed light on a new phenomenon that must be considered for intercalated topological insulators$\unicode{x2014}$and intercalated materials in general$\unicode{x2014}$that surface chemical composition can change when specimens are exposed to ambient conditions.
Chiral Separation of Copper Sulfide [S-Cu36] Nanocluster Using a Chiral Adaptive Counterion

Abstract:This work presents a new strategy to achieve the growth of copper sulfide nanoclusters with high nuclearity. Through a phosphine-assisted C-S reductive cleavage approach, an intrinsically chiral [Cu4] cluster passes through a [S-Cu9] cluster and transforms into a higher-nuclearity [S-Cu36] cluster, which features a core-shell structure with a [Cu4]4+ core encapsulated by a chiral [Cu20S12] shell. Interestingly, the spiral arrangement of the bidental ligands on the surface of the [S-Cu36] cluster leads to the L-/R-enantiomeric configurations. Moreover, by utilization of [Na(THF)6]+ as a chiral adaptive counterion, [S-Cu36] can be interlocked separately, thus enabling the isolation of homochiral clusters. Theoretical calculation suggests that the configuration transition between two enantiomeric [Na(THF)6]+ species is favorable at room temperature, thereby promoting the cocrystallization of resulting chiral products. This study introduces a novel perspective on the synthesis of chiral copper sulfide nanoclusters and presents an innovative approach to achieving the chiral separation of nanoclusters.
Growth of Multinary Copper-Based Sulfide Shells on CuInSe 2 Nanocrystals for Significant Improvement of Their Near-Infrared Emission

Abstract:A range of different copper-based sulfide shells, such as CuInS2, CuInZnS2, CuInS2-xSex, and CuInZnS2-xSex, have been grown on CuInSe2 (CISe) nanocrystals (NCs) in order to improve their photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Starting from initial CISe core NCs with PLQY of 0.4%, the deposition of the CuInS2 shell has increased the PLQY to 4.5%, while introducing Zn or Se elements into the CuInS2 shell to form cation-alloyed CuInZnS2 or anion-alloyed CuInS2-xSex shells improved their PLQYs to 8% and 11%, respectively. Limitations on PLQY for the mentioned shell materials were related to the lattice mismatch with the CISe core material, and the band gap alignment in the core/shell NCs for quasi type-II nanostructures. This could be mitigated by growing a multinary CuInZnS2-xSex shell on the CISe core NCs, which resulted in further improvement of their PLQY to 20% for the emission centered at 920 nm. Tuning thermal conductivity of bismuth selenide nanoribbons by reversible copper intercalation

Abstract:Actively tuning thermal transport properties of materials at nanoscale is of great interest in many applications. In this work, we demonstrated reversible copper (Cu) intercalation on individual bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) nanoribbons and investigated the effects of intercalation/de-intercalation of Cu atoms on their thermal transport properties. Distinct from prior studies that have shown reduced thermal conductivity (κtot) after intercalation, a crossover in κtot was observed over the measured temperature range in this work, i.e., κtot is significantly suppressed at low temperatures but enhanced above 250 K by Cu intercalation. This intriguing crossover phenomenon is attributed to the interplay between the enhanced electronic thermal conductivity (κe) and the reduced lattice thermal conductivity (κph), both of which result from the intercalated Cu atoms. Moreover, we showed that thermal conductivity could be further tuned by the de-intercalation of Cu atoms. Compared to the pristine nanoribbon, a dramatically lower in-plane κph was observed for intercalated and de-intercalated nanoribbons due to the formation of the Cu/Bi2Se3 superlattice structure. Theoretical modeling revealed that the reduced κph was primarily owing to the enhancement of phonon boundary scattering and point defect scattering. This work provides a facile approach to tune thermal transport properties at nanoscale, which can be potentially used in thermal switch and thermoelectric applications.
