Abstract:The highly complex design process for 2.5-D VLSI requires automatic Electronic Design Automation tools. In this chapter we propose a layout design framework for 2.5-D ICs. The building blocks include floorplanning, placement, and routing tools, which are capable of packing a logic circuit into a stacked space.

Abstract:We introduce the floorplanning techniques for the 2.5-D integrated VLSI systems in this chapter. Three different 2.5-D/3-D floorplanning problems are established targeting major layout design styles. The solution techniques are proposed accordingly. The results show that the 2.5-D layout solution considerably reduces wire length of interconnects and thus delivers a higher system performance. We also propose thermal driven floorplanning techniques. By taking into account temperature profile during the floorplanning optimization process, it's possible to effectively control the worst-case temperature on the chip at a small penalty of interconnect length.

Abstract:2.5-D integration is a promising technique to significantly reduce the interconnection delay and thus bring advancement to VLSI technology. New CAD tools and approaches are desired by 2.5-D IC circuit design. This paper designed a novel representation Multi-Layer-BSG and proposed a effective algorithm based on this structure. Quick strategy for solution evaluation and phrase-based strategy for simulated annealing engine are used to reduce the runtime complexity and to improve the performance. Compared with other representations, our algorithm are experimentally proved to be a better choice for 2.5-D floorplanning problem.

Abstract:Due to the unbalance between the development of EDA system and IC process technique,the layout reuse technique is demanded on the market.The existing layout should be compacted to fit for the new process technique. An efficient 2\|D compaction algorithm is proposed,which is based on the constraint graph expression of the figures on layout and newly designed rules.In order to do compaction on the chip level, a hierarchical strategy and the ‘fall leaves pool’ data structure are used,regarding the interconnections as soft lines it also can add to jogs automatically.From the test cases it is shown that this compaction algorithm is practical and effective.

Abstract:Excessive on-chip wire length and fast increasing fabrication costhave been the main factors impairing the effectiveness ofmonolithic System-on-Chip. This paper investigates a die stackingbased system integration strategy (2.5D system integration) toaddress these problems. The new scheme is design-tools-enabledrather than technology-driven. We developed a layout designframework, which is able to floorplan, place and route a VLSIdesign into stacked chips. Our results show that this new schemehas a potential to outperform its monolithic equivalent.

Abstract:In this chapter we propose a roadmap for the development of 2.5-D integrated VLSI systems. Beginning with relatively simple stacked memory chips, we envision that the 2.5-D paradigm will be gradually adopted by CPUs, graphic processors, mixed-signal systems, and extremely high-performance applications. The 2.5-D technology would unleash the power to build VLSI applications that are hard to imagine today.

Abstract:Abstract Realizing the layouts of analog/mixed-signal (AMS) integrated circuits (ICs) is a complicated task due to the high design flexibility and sensitive circuit performance. Compared with the advancements of digital IC layout automation, analog IC layout design is still heavily manual, which leads to a more time-consuming and error-prone process. In recent years, significant progress has been made in automated analog layout design with emerging of several open-source frameworks. This paper firstly reviews the existing state-of-the art AMS layout synthesis frameworks with focus on the different approaches and their individual challenges. We then present recent research trends and opportunities in the field. Finally, we summaries the paper with open questions and future directions for fully-automating the analog IC layout.

Abstract:A systematic method for automatic layout synthesis of analog integrated circuit modules is presented. This method uses analog circuit recognition and critical net analysis techniques to derive proper layout constraints for analog circuit performance optimization. These layout constraints are analyzed and prioritized according to the recognized analog circuit topologies and classified net sensitivities. The weighted constraints are then used to drive the physical layout generation process to obtain a high-quality custom circuit layout. An efficient, constraint-driven analog floorplanning technique based on a zone-sensitivity partitioning algorithm is specially developed to generate a slicing floorplan incorporating the layout constraints. This layout synthesis approach has three key advantages. First, it can produce a satisfactory analog circuit performance with negligible degradation due to the layout-introduced parasitic effects. Second, it allows a complete automation for netlist-to-layout synthesis so that the layout tool can be used by VLSI system designers. Finally, this method is quite general and can be applied to handle a wide variety of analog circuits. Experimental results in CMOS operational amplifiers and a comparator are presented.

Abstract:This chapter covers the placement solutions for 2.5-D/3-D integrated circuits. Based on a partition technique, our placement techniques could handle VLSI circuits consisting of both standard cells and macros. The detailed result analysis justifies the potential of the 2.5-D integration approach to improve system performance and lower interconnect power consumption.

Abstract:This paper presents an automatic layout generation framework in advanced CMOS technologies. The framework extends the template-and-grid-based layout generation methodology with the following additional techniques applied to produce optimal layouts more effectively. First, layout templates and grids are dynamically created and adjusted during runtime to serve various structural, functional, and design requirements. Virtual instances support the dynamic template-and-grid-based layout generation process. The framework also implements various post-processing functions to handle process-specific requirements efficiently. The post-processing functions include cut/dummy pattern generation and multiple-patterning adjustment. The generator description capability is enhanced with circular grid indexing/slicing and conditional conversion operators. The layout generation framework is applied to various design examples and generates DRC/LVS clean layouts automatically in multiple CMOS technologies.

Abstract:In order to speed up analog design cycles, analog layout automation is a popular research in recent years. However, most previous works assume that the required design constraints are given by users manually. Designers still take a lot of time to fill-in the required design information. Template-based layout generation is another approach to consider the design constraints, but considerable development efforts are required for each new design and each new technology. In this paper, we propose a structure-based methodology for analog layout generation. This methodology starts from a structure analysis that divides the circuit netlist into several building blocks automatically. It can help to reduce the dependence on users' input and generate corresponding design constraints for the succeeding layout steps. With the help from structure analysis, the layouts of those analog structures are generated, placed, and routed automatically with proper constraints. As shown in the demo cases, the proposed flow is able to generate the required layout accurately without users' intervention and still keeps the post-layout performance within specifications.

Abstract:Automating analog layout design has long been considered a challenging problem. The literature has been exploring fully automated analog layout tools, while designers still adopt manual methodologies in practice, due to the performance gap between generated layouts and manually crafted ones. Although fully automated tools cannot generate flawless solutions yet, we can enhance the design practice by incorporating designers’ expertise with intelligent and efficient automation process. In this paper, we discuss two potential directions to leverage designers’ expertise, i.e., by utilizing machine intelligence to learn from existing manual layouts, and allowing designers to efficiently edit layouts with real-time interaction. We survey the recent work dedicated to these two directions and hope to inspire more studies.

Abstract:The quality of analog layout is a crucial factor to the final performance of analog circuits. We present a novel performance-driven automatic layout tool for analog circuits. Considering there is always a signal flow in each analog circuit and the circuits carrying signals are the most important parts in the whole circuit, we put forward a new performance-driven automatic layout approach based on signal flow analysis. Our tool can control the performance degradation induced by layout at all the stages of layout generation from device generation to placement and routing. The methodology guarantees that the resulting layout meets all the constraints of parasitic parameters and device matches induced from performance specifications of analog circuits by sensitivity analysis. Excellent circuit performance obtained by the methodology is demonstrated by practical circuit examples.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) for the interactive and automated production of customs circuit layouts described in natural language. Our proposed layout automation process leverages a template-and-grid-based layout generation framework to create process-portable layout generators tailored for various custom circuits, including standard cells and high-speed mixed-signal circuits. However, rather than directly describing the layout generators in traditional programming language, we utilize natural language using LLMs to make the layout generation process more intuitive and efficient. This approach also supports interactive modifications of the layout generator code, enhancing customization capabilities. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our LLM-based layout generation method across several custom circuit examples, such as logic standard cells, a serializer and a strong arm latch, including their completeness in terms of Design Rule Check (DRC), Layout Versus Schematic (LVS) test, and post-layout performance for high-speed circuits. Our experimental results indicate that LLMs can generate a diverse range of circuit layouts with substantial customization options.

Abstract:Despite tremendous advancement of digital IC design automation tools over the last few decades, analog IC layout is still heavily manual which is very tedious and error-prone. This paper will first review the history, challenges, and current status of analog IC layout automation. Then, we will present MAGICAL, a human-intelligence inspired, fully-automated analog IC layout system currently being developed under the DARPA IDEA program. It starts from an unannotated netlist, performs automatic layout constraint extraction and device generation, then performs placement and post-placement optimization, followed by routing to obtain the final GDSII layout. Various analytical, heuristic, and machine learning algorithms will be discussed. MAGICAL has obtained promising preliminary results. We will conclude the paper with further discussions on challenges and future directions for fully-automated analog IC layout.

Abstract:This paper investigates a 3D die-stacking based VLSI integration strategy, so-called 2.5D integration, which can potentially overcome many problems stumbling the development system-on-chip (SoC), such as interconnect delay of monolithic problems due to scaling and increasing chip area. We present an approach using bipartitioning for 2.5D floorplanning based on corner block list representation. Experimental results show significant wirelength reduction compared to monolithic floorplanning.

Abstract:Engineering design is an iterative process with a fundamental need for the consistent management and propagation of product dependencies. Constraint-based design provides a unified framework to meet this critical need, but there are known issues due to the complexity of the problem within three-dimensional space. This paper presents results from a decade of research into graph theory and numerical solution techniques to address issues such as user comprehension and multiplicity of solutions. The proposed solution, Extended Variational Design Technology (VGX), utilizes an innovative Drag and Drop user interaction paradigm to improve comprehension performance, and usability. It is also demonstrated that VGX technology can provide common mathematical foundation to support flexible and integrated product design, assembly and analysis.

Abstract:The excessive interconnection delay and fast increasing development cost, as well as complexity of the single-chip integration of different technologies, are likely to become the major stumbling blocks for the success of monolithic system-on-chips. To address the above problems, this paper investigates a new VLSI integration paradigm, the so-called 2.5-dimensional (2.5-D) integration scheme. Using this scheme, a VLSI system is implemented as a three-dimensional stacking of monolithic chips. A cost analysis framework was developed to justify the 2.5-D integration scheme from an economic point of view. Enabling technologies for the new integration scheme are also reviewed.
