Abstract:Polysiloxane-based thermoplastic dynamic vulcanizate is one new kind of elastomers.It is prepared via blending of polysioxane and thermoplastic polymer followed by dynamic vulcanization.This review first described the common formation mechanism and preparation process of polysiloxane-based thermoplastic dynamic vulcanizates by reactive extrusion,and then provided an comprehensive overview and evaluation on the preparation progress of polysiloxane-based thermoplastic dynamic vulcanizates from various respects including improving the compatibilization between polydisiloxane and thermoplastic polymer,dynamic vulcanization,and processing conditions and process of reactive extrusion.Finally,this review summarized some existed and unsolved problems about preparing polysiloxanebased thermoplastic dynamic vulcanizates,and its development trend in the future.

Abstract:Chemical crosslinked poly(vinyl chloride) (C-PVC) was synthesized by vinyl chloride suspension polymerization in the presence of diallyl phthalate (DAP) and plasticized to prepare poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) materials. The chemical crosslinking and physical crosslinking structure in chemical crosslinked PVC-TPE were investigated. It showed that the gel fraction and the crosslinking density of gel increased as the feed concentration of DAP increased. C-PVC prepared by VC/DAP copolymerization was lightly crosslinked as compared with irradiation crosslinked PVC. Physical entanglements would greatly influence the crosslinking density of gel when the gel fraction was high. Chemical crosslinking had little influence on the recrystallization behavior of PVC. A structure model of chemical crosslinked PVC-TPE was proposed, in which chemical networks acted with physical networks cooperatively. It also showed that chemical crosslinking and physical crosslinking influenced the processability and mechanical properties of chemical crosslinked PVC-TPE cooperatively. Although the processability of PVC-TPE deteriorated with chemical crosslinking, the dimension stability and elasticity of PVC-TPE were improved as the permanent chemical networks were introduced. Abstract:Partially biobased thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPV) with novel morphology, superior properties and partial degradability were prepared by dynamic cross-link of saturated poly(lactide) and ethylene-co-vinyl acetate (PLA/EVA) blends using 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butylperoxy)hexane (AD) as a free radical initiator. EVA showed higher reactivity with free radicals in comparison with PLA, leading to much higher gel content of the EVA phase (Gf-EVA) than that of the PLA phase (Gf-PLA). However, the Gf-PLA increased more steeply at AD content larger than 1 wt % where the reaction of EVA approached to a saturation point. The competing reaction changed the viscosity ratio of the two components (ηPLA/ηEVA) that resulted in a novel morphology evolution of the TPV, i.e., from sea–island-type morphology to phase inversion via a dual-continuous network-like transition and finally cocontinuity again with increasing the AD content. Abstract:Bio-based poly (lactide)/ethylene-glycidyl methacrylate-vinyl acetate (PLA/EGVA) thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) with partial dual-cofitinuous network-like structures and shape memory property were made using methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA) as a cross-link agent. Epoxy groups of EGVA facilitated the selective cross-link of the EGVA phase in the PLA/EGVA blends, and two different chemical structures of the TPVs are identified based on the MHHPA content. The TPVs showed a special morphology evolution of the TPV, i.e., from sea-island-type to partial dual-continuous network-like morphology. As a consequence, the PLA/EGVA-based TPVs exhibited excellent shape memory property due to the strong resilience of the selectively cross-linked EGVA phase. The selective cross-link enhanced the complex viscosity (eta*), elasticity (G') and the solid-like behavior of the PLA/EGVA-based TPVs. Meanwhile, low tensile set (30%), moderate tensile strength (12 MPa) and elongation at break (250%), and tunable hardness (60-75 Shore A) of the TPVs are achieved by tailoring the cross-link density and phase morphology. Abstract:Chemical by crosslinked PVC was synthesized by vinyl chloride/diallyl phthalate (VC/DAP) suspension copolymerization and processed to prepare plasticized sample. PVC prepared by VC/DAP copolymerization was composed of gel and sol fraction and the crosslinking density of gle was lower. It confirmed that chain entanglements existed in both gel phase and sol phase. PVC still exhibited the recrystallization ability as it was lightly chemical by crosslinked;. The structure model of plasticized and lightly chemical by crosslinked PVC was proposed, in which chemical crosslink network and physical crosslink network formed by chain entanglements and micro-crystallites were cooperated each other. The rheological, temperature-deformation behavior and permanent compression set of plasticized and lightly chemical by crosslinked PVC were influenced by chemical and physical crosslinking.

Abstract:Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) is one of the most currently investigated polymers due to its production from renewable sources and biodegradability. Being a brittle polymer, PLA has low toughness, limiting its use for commercial applications. Therefore, the present work aims to produce PLA blends, using the ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA), dynamically vulcanized with dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as a crosslinking agent. A 70/30 mixture of PLA/EVA was produced with 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0 phr DCP. The produced blends were characterized by torque rheometry, melt flow index (MFI), gel content, thermogravimetry (TG), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Tensile properties, impact strength, heat deflection temperature (HDT), and blends morphologies (SEM) were also studied. The presence of increased dynamically vulcanized systems with added DCP was verified through torque rheometry, MFI, and gel content. Substantial increases in the impact strength and elongation at break were observed in PLA/EVA/DCP, providing super‐tough materials at 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0 phr of DCP, with impact strengths of 829.5, 860.3, and 890.2 J/m and elongation at break of 138.5, 146.8, and 120.4%, respectively. These results are promising when compared with engineering polymers and blends. This is probably due to in situ compatibilizer PLA‐g‐EVA, which resulted in a homogeneous morphology as evidenced by SEM images.

Abstract:Owing to the sustainability and environmental friendliness of biobased polymers, we adopted synthesized biobased polyester elastomer (BPE) and polylactide (PLA) as the two components to produce a new biobased thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) by an in situ dynamical crosslinking and mixing method. The effect of blending ratio on the dynamic crosslinking and micromorphology of TPV was investigated by mixing torque measurements, degree of crosslinking measurements, TEM, DSC, and rheological properties. A large amount of crosslinked BPE particles were dispersed in the PLA continuous phase, with the particle sizes ranging from 1 to 4 μm, indicating the occurrence of phase inversion during the dynamical crosslinking and mixing process. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the biobased TPVs ranged from 11.4 MPa to 17.8 MPa and 154% to 184%, respectively. Reprocessing did not significantly reduce the mechanical properties, as an indication that biobased TPVs, like thermoplastics, have good reprocessability. In vitro cytotoxicity tests showed that our TPVs were nontoxic, at least towards mouse fibroblasts. Thus, these novel biobased TPVs with excellent mechanical properties and low cytotoxicity are reported for the first time in the flied of thermoplastic elastomers for engineering and biomedical applications.

Abstract:PP/ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) thermoplastic elastomer was prepared by the dynamic photocrosslinking method.The results from dynamic mechanical thermal analysis(DMTA),SEM and mechanical tests show that the dynamic photocrosslinking increases the compatibility between PP and EPDM,leading to the obvious improvement of mechanical properties of PP/EPDM thermoplastic elastomer.With the help of WAXD,DMTA and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) measurements,it is confirmed that the graft copolymer PP-g-EPDM originating from dynamic photocrosslinking is formed at the interface.

Abstract:The well-known bio-based and biocompostable poly(lactic acid), PLA, suffers from brittleness and a low heat distortion temperature. In this paper, we address a possible route to make PLA tough(er) by blending with ethylene-co-vinyl acetate (EVA) with different vinyl acetate contents. The compatibility and phase morphology of the PLA/EVA blends was controlled by the ratio of vinyl acetate and ethylene in the random copolymers. Tough PLA/EVA blends with increased impact toughness, up to a factor of 30, were obtained with a maximum toughness at a vinyl acetate content of approximately 50wt.%. The local deformation mechanism was well studied by TEM, SAXS and SEM. It revealed that internal rubber cavitation in combination with matrix yielding is the dominant toughening mechanism for the PLA/EVA blends under both impact and tensile testing conditions.

Abstract:Vitrimers with dynamic covalent bonds are sustainable alternatives for traditional thermosetting polymers. The variations of building block alter the properties of vitrimers, but obstruct detailed structure–property correlations. Besides, a recognizable crosslinking reaction is responsible for the network structures of vitrimers. Herein, we investigated the effects of building block variations (i.e., the content of crosslinker, and the type and molar mass of polymer matrix) on the crosslinking kinetics, as well as on the static and dynamic properties using polyether‐based vinylogous urethane vitrimers as model system. The kinetics of crosslinking tracked by in situ FTIR provides an insightful understanding on the vitrimer yield and formation rate under conditions. And the apparent rate coefficient (k) was linearly correlated to the crosslinking density (νe) in case of different polymer matrixes being used. In addition, based on the classical theoretical models we also realized the correlations between the static property (i.e., glass transition temperature, Tg) and νe, as well as the dynamic property (i.e., topology freezing temperature, Tv) and νe. Tg has been found to be exclusively positively related to νe, while Tv is jointly determined by νe and the content of free amine. This strategy to establish reaction–structure–property relationship bridged by the crosslinking density will guide the preparation of novel, tailor‐made sustainable polymeric materials.

Abstract:In this paper, we produced ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)-filled poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blends by extrusion and injection moulding. We annealed the injection-moulded specimens at 80 °C, 100 °C, 120 °C and 140 °C to produce various crystal structures in PLA. Then we investigated the cross-effect between the crystal structure of PLA and the presence of EVA on the mechanical, impact, calorimetric, thermomechanical and heat deflection temperature properties of the blends. We found a synergistic toughening effect between the crystal structure of PLA that developed during annealing and the presence of dispersed EVA particles in the PLA matrix. The blend had a very high impact strength of over 65 kJ m−2, which is three times higher than the impact strength of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer (~ 20 kJ m−2), and thus it is very promising for technical applications.

Abstract:The rubber crosslinking and phase conversion procedures in dynamic vulcanization were analyzed. A pressure-sensitive adhesive model was suggested to describe the interfacial bonding between rubber and plastic. The effects of curing speed and shearing strain on interfacial bonding and the mechanical properties were explained by this model. A new two-step dynamic vulcanization was put forward and the mechanical properties of the elastomer were improved remarkably.

Abstract:Dynamically vulcanized thermoplastic olefin (TPO) based on polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) loaded with zinc dimethacrylate (ZDMA) was prepared. The addition of ZDMA significantly improved the complex viscosity of the resulting material in the melt state, as determined from rheological analysis. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed to evaluate the structure, as well as to characterize the morphology formed during dynamic vulcanization. The ZDMA improved the crosslinking of the rubber phase and resulted in crosslinked rubber particles with dimensions within 200 nm. The addition of ZDMA improved the compatibility between rubber and PP phases, which contributed to the enhanced mechanical and theological properties. The crystallization behavior analysis indicated that the addition of ZDMA promoted the nucleation process of PP, but a higher ZDMA content showed a negative effect on the crystallinity of the PP component. Remarkable improvements in toughness and extensibility of PP/EPDM/ZDMA composites were achieved. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, biobased polylactic acid (PLA) has emerged as the most promising option to replace some of the fossil-based and nonbiodegradable polymers due to environmental concerns. In this study, a flexible polymer, polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) was blended with PLA to improve the toughness and flexibility of PLA, and the PLA/PBAT blend was further UV-induced to form crosslink structure. The results show that the flexibility and toughness of PLA could be significantly enhanced when PBAT was introduced, and the compatibility of PLA and PBAT could be enhanced by the development of a crosslink structure. Especially, the elongation at break and unnotched impact strength of ABT-UV30 (PLA/PBAT/triallyisocyanurate (TAIC) exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light for 30 min) was increased to 3.9 and 8.4 times of neat PLA. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of PLA was increased from 63.4 to 72.9 °C as the radiation duration was prolonged to 60 min. The melting point temperature of PBAT was also increased gradually until it eventually coincided with that of PLA. The thermalgravimetric analyzer thermograms show that a moderate amount of UV radiation can improve the thermal stability of the sample while an excessive amount of UV radiation can reduce the degradation temperature.

Study on mechanical properties of dynamically cured PP/epoxy resin blends

Abstract:In this paper, dynamical vulcanization process which usually used for preparation of thermoplastic elastomers was applied to PP/epoxy resin blend systems. Products of crosslinked epoxy resin particles finely dispersed in PP matrix were obtained, and were named as dynamically cured PP/epoxy resin blends. Maleic anhydride grafted PP (PP-MA) was used as a compatilizer. The influences of PP-MA content, epoxy content and reaction conditions on mechanical properties of dynamically cured PP/epoxy resin blends were investigated. Experimental results show that dynamically cured PP/epoxy resin blends have better mechanical properties than that of the PP/epoxy and PP/PP-MA/epoxy blends. By increasing epoxy resin content, flexural modulus increased significantly, while the elongation at break dramatically deceased. Impact strength was slightly affected by the presence of the epoxy resin.

Abstract:We studied the microstructure, morphological evolution and the corresponding mechanism, and the properties of bromo-isobutylene-isoprene rubber (BIIR)/polypropylene (PP) thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs). Interestingly, a large number of single rubber nanoparticles were observed in the crosslinked BIIR/PP blends, ascribed to the improvement of compatibility between the BIIR and PP with increasing dynamic vulcanization (DV) time, as demonstrated by the increase in interfacial phase thickness and the decrease in the interfacial tension. Most of these single nanoparticles agglomerated as the DV proceeded, leading to the deterioration of the rubber network. Another interesting observation was that the size of rubber agglomerate decreased as the DV proceeded, leading to the strengthening of the rubber network. Importantly, the as-prepared BIIR/PP TPV exhibits good processability, high elasticity and good mechanical property. The relationship between the unique morphology and properties were studied. Our study provides guidance for the preparation of high-performance BIIR/PP TPV for its industrial applications such as medical bottle stoppers.
Linear viscoelasticity, nonlinear rheology and applications of polyethylene terephthalate vitrimers

Abstract:To enhance mechanical properties and processing performance of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), it was upcycled to processable PET vitrimers with different crosslinking degrees by introducing dynamic network. The thermodynamics and linear viscoelasticity of PET vitrimers were explored by non-isothermal crystallization, isothermal sweep, frequency sweep and stress relaxation after incorporation of network. In particular, rheology experiments are sensitive to network structure and bond exchange mechanism in vitrimers. The pseudo-master curves show that relaxation processes are composed of three characteristic regions: Rouse-type relaxation of network strands, rubbery plateau and terminal relaxation of network, which is consistent with reversible gelation (RG) model. Two distinct (flow and chemical reaction) activation energies, are obtained by time-temperature superposition principle due to different temperature dependences of two relaxation behaviors. In addition, nonlinear rheology of PET vitrimers was investigated by extensional flow and start-up shear at the same Weissenberg number, and obvious strain hardening behavior were observed in all vitrimers. However, vitrimers with different crosslinking density exhibited distinct strain hardening trends as increase of extensional rate, corresponding to the ductility of material. On the basis of kinetics study, self-repairing and welding properties are further quantitatively explored for industrial applications.

Abstract:We have reported a mild synthesis of triblock copolymers, polylactide-block-polyisoprene-block-polylactide (termed as PLA-b-PI-b-PLA), which are environment-friendly sustainable elastomers. In this paper, the thermal stability, viscoelastic property and mechanical property for these triblock copolymers are investigated due to their application purpose and the effect of formation of PLA crystals on their mechanical property is particularly concerned with because the end blocks of these triblock copolymers are crystallizable when prepared by solvent-casting after their synthesis. Dynamic thermomechanical analysis discloses two separate glass transitions associated with sufficiently high storage moduli due to their typical phase-separated morphology with the glass transition temperature of hard glassy phase domains higher than ambient temperature. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction technique (WAXD) demonstrates that the end blocks crystallize and eventually PLA alpha-form crystals form. The variable mechanical property of triblock copolymers can be obviously enhanced by controlling crystallization of the end blocks, with the crystallized PLA domains replacing the glassy amorphous PLA domains, facilitating development of sustainable green elastomers with sufficient applicable mechanical property.
Fully biobased and supertough polylactide-based thermoplastic vulcanizates fabricated by peroxide-induced dynamic vulcanization and interfacial compatibilization

Abstract:A fully biobased and supertough thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) consisting of polylactide (PLA) and a biobased vulcanized unsaturated aliphatic polyester elastomer (UPE) was fabricated via peroxide-induced dynamic vulcanization. Interfacial compatibilization between PLA and UPE took place during dynamic vulcanization, which was confirmed by gel measurement and NMR analysis. After vulcanization, the TPV exhibited a quasi cocontinuous morphology with vulcanized UPE compactly dispersed in PLA matrix, which was different from the pristine PLA/UPE blend, exhibiting typically phase-separated morphology with unvulcanized UPE droplets discretely dispersed in matrix. The TPV showed significantly improved tensile and impact toughness with values up to about 99.3 MJ/m(3) and 586.6 J/m, respectively, compared to those of 3.2 MJ/m(3) and 16.8 J/m for neat PLA, respectively. The toughening mechanisms under tensile and impact tests were investigated and deduced as massive shear yielding of the PLA matrix triggered by internal cavitation of VUPE. The fully biobased supertough PLA vulcanizate could serve as a promising alternative to traditional commodity plastics.
