Comprehensive itaconic acid-based vitrimers via one-pot inverse vulcanization

Abstract:Dynamic cross-linked biobased vitrimers can be recycled, reprocessed, and degraded via bond exchange reactions. However, the competitive raw materials and the tedious preparation process still bring challenges for these sustainable polymers to apply in future. In this work, a series itaconic acid-based vitrimers owning dual-dynamic networks (SV1, SV2, SV3, SV4 and SV5) have been prepared by one-pot inverse vulcanization, which simultaneously resolved the aforementioned issues. In these vitrimers, sulfur (S 8 ) and itaconic acid (IA) were selected as the chief constituents that can be obtained from industrial/agricultural by-products, 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDE) was used as a cross-linker to regulate the network performance, and 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) was utilized as a catalyst both for reducing the reaction temperature to a mild range (130 o C) and accelerating the transesterification reactions (TERs). The resulting vitrimers exhibited good solvent resistance and thermal stability. Especially for SV5, it maintained usable thermal and mechanical properties, with the tensile strength, Young's modulus, toughness, T d5 and T g of 6.18 MPa, 108.97 MPa, 1.71 MJ/m 3 , 212 o C, and 19 o C, respectively. Benefitting from the exchange of disulfide bonds and TERs, these vitrimers can take place stress relaxation at 100 o C, and the relaxation time reduced from 531 to only 13 s from SV1 to SV5 as the decline of cross-linker contents. Accordingly, they can be physical recycled, repaired, welded, and chemical degraded at a mild temperature. This work provides a green yet efficient strategy to prepare vitrimers in one-pot, paving a way to sustainable polymers from industrial and agricultural by-products.
