Abstract:Activated carbon (AC) air-cathodes are inexpensive and useful alternatives to Pt-catalyzed electrodes in microbial fuel cells (MFCs), but information is needed on their long-term stability for oxygen reduction. AC cathodes were constructed with diffusion layers (DLs) with two different porosities (30% and 70%) to evaluate the effects of increased oxygen transfer on power. The 70% DL cathode initially produced a maximum power density of 1214±123mW/m2 (cathode projected surface area; 35±4W/m3 based on liquid volume), but it decreased by 40% after 1 year to 734±18mW/m2. The 30% DL cathode initially produced less power than the 70% DL cathode, but it only decreased by 22% after 1 year (from 1014±2mW/m2 to 789±68mW/m2). Electrochemical tests were used to examine the reasons for the degraded performance. Diffusion resistance in the cathode was found to be the primary component of the internal resistance, and it increased over time. Replacing the cathode after 1 year completely restored the original power densities. These results suggest that the degradation in cathode performance was due to clogging of the AC micropores. These findings show that AC is a cost-effective material for oxygen reduction that can still produce ∼750mW/m2 after 1 year.

Abstract:Scalable production of air cathodes is crucial for applying electrochemical technologies in practical water treatment applications. However, existing fabrication procedures of air cathodes for microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are either complicated or not sufficiently waterproof for larger-scale processes. In this study, an easily imple-mented low-pressure rolling phase inversion method was developed for preparing scalable, waterproof activated carbon air cathodes. An aminated PVDF (NH2-PVDF) membrane was synthesized as a new gas diffusion layer (GDL) to avoid defect formation from contacting organic solvent during cathode fabrication. The cathode was easily enlarged to 1000 cm(2) with a high pressure resistance of 13 +/- 0.7 m H2O height (similar to 137 kPa), exceeding the waterproof capability of previously reported air cathodes. The electrochemical performance of the fabricated air cathode was not affected by the additional membrane. MFCs with the NH2-PVDF cathodes produced a maximum power density of 1010 +/- 40 mW m(-2), consistent with literature values. The cathode was used to generate H2O2 at a rate of 420 +/- 40 mg L-1 h(-1) (25 mA cm(-2)), and nickel catalyst modification further increased the rate to 760 +/- 60 mg L-1 h(-1) (25 mA cm(-2)). Overall, the highly waterproof rolling phase inversion activated carbon air cathodes showed great promise for scaling up biotic and abiotic electrochemical systems for practical applications.
Power Generation by Packed-Bed Air-Cathode Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:Catalysts and catalyst binders are significant portions of the cost of microbial fuel cell (MFC) cathodes. Many materials have been tested as aqueous cathodes, but air-cathodes are needed to avoid energy demands for water aeration. Packed-bed air-cathodes were constructed without expensive binders or diffusion layers using four inexpensive carbon-based materials. Cathodes made from activated carbon produced the largest maximum power density of 676 +/- 93 mW/m(2), followed by semi-coke (376 +/- 47 mW/m(2)), graphite (122 +/- 14 mW/m(2)) and carbon felt (60 +/- 43 mW/m(2)). Increasing the mass of activated carbon and semi-coke from 5 to >= 15 g significantly reduced power generation because of a reduction in oxygen transfer due to a thicker water layer in the cathode (similar to 3 or similar to 6 cm). These results indicate that a thin packed layer of activated carbon or semi-coke can be used to make inexpensive air-cathodes for MFCs. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Single-Step Fabrication Using A Phase Inversion Method of Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) (pvdf) Activated Carbon Air Cathodes for Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:Air cathodes used in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) need to have high catalytic activity for oxygen reduction, but they must also be easy to manufacture, inexpensive, and watertight. A simple one-step, phase inversion process was used here to construct an inexpensive MFC cathode using a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) binder and an activated carbon catalyst. The phase inversion process enabled cathode preparation at room temperatures, without, the need for additional heat treatment, and it produced for the first time a cathode that did not require a separate diffusion layer to prevent water leakage. MFCs using this new type of cathode produced a maximum power density of 1470 +/- 50 mW m(-2) with acetate as a substrate, and 230 +/- 10 mW m(-2) with domestic wastewater. These power densities were similar to those obtained using cathodes made using more expensive materials or more complex procedures, such as cathodes with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) binder and a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) diffusion layer, or a Pt catalyst. Even though the PVDF cathodes did not have a diffusion layer, they withstood up to 1.22 +/- 0.04 m of water head (similar to 12 kPa) without leakage, compared to 0.18 +/- 0.02 m for cathodes made using PTFE binder and PDMS diffusion layer. The cost of PVDF and activated carbon ($3 m(-2)) was less than that of the stainless steel mesh current collector ($12 m(-2)). PVDF-based AC cathodes therefore are inexpensive, have excellent performance in terms of power and water leakage, and they can be easily manufactured using a single phase inversion process at room temperature.

Abstract:An inexpensive activated carbon (AC) air cathode was developed as an alternative to a platinum-catalyzed electrode for oxygen reduction in a microbial fuel cell (MFC). AC was cold-pressed with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) binder to form the cathode around a Ni mesh current collector. This cathode construction avoided the need for carbon cloth or a metal catalyst, and produced a cathode with high activity for oxygen reduction at typical MFC current densities. Tests with the AC cathode produced a maximum power density of 1220mW/m2 (normalized to cathode projected surface area; 36W/m3 based on liquid volume) compared to 1060mW/m2 obtained by Pt catalyzed carbon cloth cathode. The Coulombic efficiency ranged from 15% to 55%. These findings show that AC is a cost-effective material for achieving useful rates of oxygen reduction in air cathode MFCs.
Cathodic Biofouling Control by Microbial Separators in Air-Breathing Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) incorporating air-breathing cathodes have emerged as a promising ecofriendly wastewater treatment technology capable of operating on an energy-free basis. However, the inevitable biofouling of these devices rapidly decreases cathodic catalytic activity and also reduces the stability of MFCs during long-term operation. The present work developed a novel microbial separator for use in air-breathing MFCs that protects cathodic catalytic activity. In these modified devices, microbes preferentially grow on the microbial separator rather than the cathodic surface such that biofouling is prevented. Trials showed that this concept provided low charge transfer and mass diffusion resistance values during the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction of 4.6 +/- 1.3 and 17.3 +/- 6.8 U, respectively, after prolonged operation. The maximum power density was found to be stable at 1.06 +/- 0.07 W m-2 throughout a long-term test and the chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency was increased to 92% compared with a value of 83% for MFCs exhibiting serious biofouling. In addition, a cathode combined with a microbial separator demonstrated less cross-cathode diffusion of oxygen to the anolyte. This effect indirectly induced the growth of electroactive bacteria and produced higher currents in air-breathing MFCs. Most importantly, the present microbial separator concept enhances both the lifespan and economics of air-breathing MFCs by removing the need to replace or regenerate the cathode during longterm operation. These results indicate that the installation of a microbial separator is an effective means of stabilizing power generation and ensuring the cost-effective performance of air-breathing MFCs intended for future industrial applications.(c) 2023 The Authors. Diffusion-layer-free air cathode based on ionic conductive hydrogel for microbial fuel cells

Abstract:High hydraulic pressure in air-cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can lead to severe cathodic water leakage and power reduction, thereby hindering the practical applications of MFCs. In this study, an alternative air cathode without a diffusion layer was developed using a cross-linked hydrogel, oxidized konjac glucomannan/2-hydroxypropytrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (OKH), for ion bridging. The cathode was placed horizontally to avoid hydraulic pressure on its surface. Ion transportation was sustained with a minimal OKH hydrogel loading of 10 mg/cm2. A maximum power density of 1.0 ± 0.04 W/m2 was achieved, which was only slightly lower than the 1.28 ± 0.02 W/m2 of common air cathodes. Moreover, the cost of the OKH hydrogel is only $0.12/m2, which can reduce ~85% of the cathode cost without using the advanced polyvinylidene fluoride diffusion layer. Therefore, the development of this new diffusion-layer-free air cathode using conductive ionic hydrogel provides a low-cost strategy for stable MFC operation, thereby demonstrating great potential for practical applications of MFC technology.

Abstract:An inexpensive carbon material, carbon mesh, was examined to replace the more expensive carbon cloth usually used to make cathodes in air-cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Three different diffusion layers were tested using carbon mesh: poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and Goretex cloth. Carbon mesh with a mixture of PDMS and carbon black as a diffusion layer produced a maximum power density of 1355 ± 62 mW m -2 (normalized to the projected cathode area), which was similar to that obtained with a carbon cloth cathode (1390 ± 72 mW m-2). Carbon mesh with a PTFE diffusion layer produced only a slightly lower (6.6%) maximum power density (1303 ± 48 mW m-2). The Coulombic efficiencies were a function of current density, with the highest value for the carbon mesh and PDMS (79%) larger than that for carbon cloth (63%). The cost of the carbon mesh cathode with PDMS/Carbon or PTFE (excluding catalyst and binder costs) is only 2.5% of the cost of the carbon cloth cathode. These results show that low cost carbon materials such as carbon mesh can be used as the cathode in an MFC without reducing the performance compared to more expensive carbon cloth. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:A more practical microbial fuel cell system with both catalytic cathode membrane and packed cathode of modified granular activated carbon with manganese dioxide/titanium dioxide/graphitic carbon nitride/(MnO2/TiO2/g-C3N4/GAC) was tested in treating high COD coking wastewater (> 3000 or > 6000 mg L-1). The decreased system internal resistance promoted treatment efficiency and electricity generation. With microbes acclimated, the system achieved both high removals of COD and NH4±-N (> 96%), decreased UV254 from 23.80-34.50 cm-1 in influent to 1.11-1.42 cm-1 in effluent. The capacity in COD removal reached 3.07 kg COD m-3d-1 and the maximum power density was 1680 mW m-3 much higher than those without the packed cathode. This system is feasible for sustainable treatment of coking wastewater.

Abstract:A novel microwave irradiation method was used to prepare the catalyst layer (CL) of activated carbon air cathodes (ACACs) in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) instead of conventional heating processes. Microwave preparation resulted in a more homogenous distribution of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in CLs and slightly reduced the hydrophobicity of CLs. These physicochemical characteristics improved the three-phase interfaces (TPIs) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), by increasing the catalytic area of activated carbon and facilitating the diffusion of oxygen gas and H+/OH- ions. Compared to the conventional ACACs, the charge transfer resistance and the diffusion resistance of the microwave prepared ACACs decreased by 17.6%similar to 35.6% and 18.4%similar to 66.2% respectively. As a result, the maximum power density of MFCs increased by 23.3% (from 1237 +/- 84 mW/m(2) to 1525 +/- 19 mW/m(2)), 15.6% (from 1370 +/- 36 mW/m(2) to 1584 +/- 9 mW/m(2)) and 9.2% (from 1296 +/- 17 mW/m(2) to 1415 +/- 81mW/m(2)) respectively at activated carbon/PTFE mass ratios of 4, 6 and 8. This novel preparation method has a promising future as an application in MFCs.

Abstract:A cathode is a critical factor that limits the practical application of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) in terms of cost and power generation. To develop a cost-effective cathode, we investigate a cathode preparation technique using nickel foam as a current collector, activated carbon as a catalyst and PTFE as a binder. The effects of the type and loading of conductive carbon, the type and loading of activated carbon, and PTFE loading on cathode performance are systematically studied by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The nickel foam cathode MFC produces a power density of 1190±50mWm−2, comparable with 1320mWm−2 from a typical carbon cloth Pt cathode MFC. However, the cost of a nickel foam activated carbon cathode is 1/30 of that of carbon cloth Pt cathode. The results indicate that a nickel foam cathode could be used in scaling up the MFC system.
Immobilization of a Metal-Nitrogen-Carbon Catalyst on Activated Carbon with Enhanced Cathode Performance in Microbial Fuel Cells.

Abstract:Applications of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are limited in part by low power densities mainly due to cathode performance. Successful immobilization of an Fe-N-C co-catalyst on activated carbon (Fe-N-C/AC) improved the oxygen reduction reaction to nearly a four-electron transfer, compared to a twoelectron transfer achieved using AC. With acetate as the fuel, the maximum power density was 4.7±0.2 W m(-2) , which is higher than any previous report for an air-cathode MFC. With domestic wastewater as a fuel, MFCs with the Fe-N-C/AC cathode produced up to 0.8±0.03 W m(-2) , which was twice that obtained with a Pt-catalyzed cathode. The use of this Fe-N-C/AC catalyst can therefore substantially increase power production, and enable broader applications of MFCs for renewable electricity generation using waste materials.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFC) with 30% wet-proofed air cathodes have previously been optimized to have 4 diffusion layers (DLs) in order to limit oxygen transfer into the anode chamber and optimize performance. Newer MFC designs that allow close electrode spacing have a separator that can also reduce oxygen transfer into the anode chamber, and there are many types of carbon wet-proofed materials available. Additional analysis of conditions that optimize performance is therefore needed for separator-coupled MFCs in terms of the number of DLs and the percent of wet proofing used for the cathode. The number of DLs on a 50% wet-proofed carbon cloth cathode significantly affected MFC performance, with the maximum power density decreasing from 1427 to 855 mW/m(2) for 1-4 DLs. A commonly used cathode (30% wet-proofed, 4 DLs) produced a maximum power density (988 mW/m(2)) that was 31% less than that produced by the 50% wet-proofed cathode (1 DL). It was shown that the cathode performance with different materials and numbers of DLs was directly related to conditions that increased oxygen transfer. The coulombic efficiency (CE) was more affected by the current density than the oxygen transfer coefficient for the cathode. MFCs with the 50% wet-proofed cathode (2 DLs) had a CE of >84% (6.8 A/m(2)), which was substantially larger than that previously obtained using carbon cloth air-cathodes lacking separators. These results demonstrate that MFCs constructed with separators should have the minimum number of DLs that prevent water leakage and maximize oxygen transfer to the cathode. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Microbial Fuel Cell Cathodes with Poly(dimethylsiloxane) Diffusion Layers Constructed Around Stainless Steel Mesh Current Collectors

Abstract:A new and simplified approach for making cathodes for microbial fuel cells (MFCs) was developed by using metal mesh current collectors and inexpensive polymer/carbon diffusion layers (DLs). Rather than adding a current collector to a cathode material such as carbon cloth, we constructed the cathode around the metal mesh itself, thereby avoiding the need for the carbon cloth or other supporting material. A base layer of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and carbon black was applied to the air-side of a stainless steel mesh, and Pt on carbon black with Nafion binder was applied to the solution-side as catalyst for oxygen reduction. The PDMS prevented water leakage and functioned as a DL by limiting oxygen transfer through the cathode and improving coulombic efficiency. PDMS is hydrophobic, stable, and less expensive than other DL materials, such as PTFE, that are commonly applied to air cathodes. Multiple PDMS/carbon layers were applied in order to optimize the performance of the cathode. Two PDMS/carbon layers achieved the highest maximum power density of 1610 +/- 56 mW/m(2) (normalized to cathode projected surface area; 47.0 +/- 1.6 W/m(3) based on liquid volume). This power output was comparable to the best result of 1635 +/- 62 mW/m(2) obtained using carbon cloth with three PDMS/carbon layers and a Pt catalyst. The coulombic efficiency of the mesh cathodes reached more than 80%, and was much higher than the maximum of 57% obtained with carbon cloth. These findings demonstrate that cathodes can be constructed around metal mesh materials such as stainless steel, and that an inexpensive coating of PDMS can prevent water leakage and lead to improved coulombic efficiencies.
Mitigating External and Internal Cathode Fouling Using a Polymer Bonded Separator in Microbial Fuel Cells.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) cathodes rapidly foul when treating domestic wastewater, substantially reducing power production over time. Here a wipe separator was chemically bonded to an activated carbon air cathode using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to mitigate cathode fouling and extend cathode performance over time. MFCs with separator-bonded cathodes produced a maximum power density of 190 +/- 30 mW m(-2) after 2 months of operation using domestic wastewater, which was similar to 220% higher than controls (60 +/- 50 mW m(-2)) with separators that were not chemically bonded to the cathode. Less biomass (protein) was measured on the bonded separator surface than the non-bonded separator, indicating chemical bonding reduced external bio-fouling. Salt precipitation that contributed to internal fouling was also reduced using separator-bonded cathodes. Overall, the separator-bonded cathodes showed better performance over time by mitigating both external bio-fouling and internal salt fouling.

Abstract:The inefficient activated carbon (AC) air-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC) is greatly constrained by the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which requires highly active and cost-effective catalysts to expedite the reaction kinetics. Herein, we propose an accessible and scalable method to prepare porous iron-nitrogen-doped carbon nanospheres (FFC/NG) by utilizing the inexpensive zinc-iron Prussian blue analogue as the precursor. Physicochemical characterization indicates that the evaporation of Zn is helpful to promote the surface area and mesopores volume. The maximum power density for the optimal sample (FFC/NG@AC-3) is 1913 +/- 39 mW m- 2, which is 200.3% higher than that of the bared AC and also outperforms the performance of the commercial Pt/C. The removing rate of chemical oxygen demand (COD) for FFC/NG@AC-3 can reach 80.2% after 72 h, 13.6% higher than that of bared AC. Density functional theory (DFT) confirms that the carbon atoms adjacent to graphitic nitrogen and pyridinic nitrogen on the graphene shell contribute to enhancing the oxygen adsorption energy. It can be well concluded that due to low cost, facile synthesis and remarkable performance, FFC/NG is a promising AC air-cathode modification reagent for MFC.

Abstract:Constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) has exhibited the performance discrepancy between using granular activated carbon (GAC) and columnar activated carbon (CAC) as air-cathode materials. No doubt, this is linked with electrochemical performance and decontaminants characteristics in the CW-MFC system. To provide insight into this performance discrepancy, three CW-MFCs were designed with different carbon-material to construct varied shapes of air-cathodes. The results showed that the ring-shaped cathode filled with GAC yielded a highest voltage of 458 mV with maximum power density of 13.71 mW m-2 and >90% COD removal in the CW-MFC system. The electrochemical characteristics and the electron transport system activity (ETSA) are the driven force to bring the GAC a better electron transportation and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This will help elucidating underlying mechanisms of different activated carbon for air-cathode and thus promote its large application.
