Abstract:The electron transport layer (ETL) with excellent charge extraction and transport ability plays a crucial role in high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we propose a approach to modify SnO2 ETL by introducing perovskite oxide BiFeO3 nanoparticles into SnO2 film to construct SnO2-BiFeO3 nano-heterostructure. The formation of SnO2-BiFeO3 nano-heterostructure within the SnO2 ETL introduces an additional built-in potential directed from SnO2 to BiFeO3, which provides an additional driven force for the charge carriers transfer. As a result, the extraction rate of electrons from the perovskite layer to the SnO2-BiFeO3 ETLs is significantly improved. In addition, an excellent ETL/perovskite interface with more favorable band alignment and fewer defects is achieved via the incorporation of BiFeO3 nanoparticles. By employing SnO2-BiFeO3 ETLs in CsPbI3 PSCs, we obtained PSC with a higher PCE of 17.35%, compared to 14.93% for the reference one. This result not only validates the effectiveness of BiFeO3 in improving the performance of SnO2-based PSCs but also highlights its potential application for other perovskite devices.

Abstract:The ideal charge transport materials should exhibit a proper energy level, high carrier mobility, sufficient conductivity, and excellent charge extraction ability. Here, a novel electron transport material was designed and synthesized by using a simple and facile solvothermal method, which is composed of the core-shell ZnO@SnO2 nanoparticles. Thanks to the good match between the energy level of the SnO2 shell and the high electron mobility of the core ZnO nanoparticles, the PCE of inorganic perovskite solar cells has reached 14.35% (J(SC): 16.45 mA cm(-2), V-OC: 1.11 V, FF: 79%), acting core-shell ZnO@SnO2 nanoparticles as the electron transfer layer. The core-shell ZnO@SnO2 nanoparticles size is 8.1 nm with the SnO2 shell thickness of 3.4 nm, and the electron mobility is seven times more than SnO2 nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the uniform core-shell ZnO@SnO2 nanoparticles is extremely favorable to the growth of inorganic perovskite films. These preliminary results strongly suggest the great potential of this novel electron transfer material in high-efficiency perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Planar structures for halide perovskite solar cells have recently garnered attention, due to their simple and low-temperature device fabrication processing. Unfortunately, planar structures typically show I–V hysteresis and lower stable device efficiency compared with mesoporous structures, especially for TiO2-based n-i-p devices. SnO2, which has a deeper conduction band and higher electron mobility compared with traditional TiO2, could enhance charge transfer from perovskite to electron transport layers, and reduce charge accumulation at the interface. Here we report low-temperature solution-processed SnO2 nanoparticles as an efficient electron transport layer for perovskite solar cells. Our SnO2-based devices are almost free of hysteresis, which we propose is due to the enhancement of electron extraction. By introducing a PbI2 passivation phase in the perovskite layer, we obtain a 19.9 ± 0.6% certified efficiency. The devices can be easily processed under low temperature (150 ∘C), offering an efficient method for the large-scale production of perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Mesoporous single crystals are prized for their fast electron transport and high surface area. Here we report the first synthesis of mesoporous SnO2 single crystals (SnO2 MSCs) by a simple silicatemplated hydrothermal method, and its application in solutionprocessed perovskite solar cells (PSCs). A relatively low efficiency (3.76%) was obtained due to the strong charge recombination at the SnO2/perovskite interface. However, by coating a thin TiO2 barrier layer on SnO2 via TiCl4 treatment, we were able to achieve an 8.54% power conversion efficiency (PCE). A dynamics study using impedance spectroscopy revealed a much lower transport resistance for the SnO2 MSC-based solar cells than for the TiO2 nanocrystal PSCs, but a stronger recombination. Significantly, the thin TiO2 coating layer on SnO2 considerably reduced the recombination while largely maintaining the superior electron-transport properties.
Direct Conversion of CH3NH3PbI3 from Electrodeposited PbO for Highly Efficient Planar Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have recently been identified as a promising light absorber for solar cells. In the efficient solar cells, the perovskite active layer has generally been fabricated by either vapor deposition or two-step sequential deposition process. Herein, electrochemically deposited PbO film is in situ converted into CH3NH3PbI3 through solid-state reaction with adjacent CH3NH3I layer, exhibiting a large-scale flat and uniform thin film with fully substrate coverage. The resultant planar heterojunction photovoltaic device yields a best power conversion efficiency of 14.59% and an average power conversion efficiency of 13.12 ± 1.08% under standard AM 1.5 conditions. This technique affords a facile and environment-friendly method for the fabrication of the perovskite based solar cells with high reproducibility, paving the way for the practical application.
A facile spray-assisted fabrication of homogenous flat CH3NH3PbI3 films for high performance mesostructure perovskite solar cells

Abstract:A homogenous coverage of the CH3NH3PbI3 light absorption layer is crucially important for a high-performance metal–organic halide perovskite solar cell (PSC). Herein, we found that a facile spray-assisted process instead of the commonly used dipping process in a two-step spin-coating method can effectively reduce the roughness (of RMS only 16nm), enhance the coverage of the light absorption layer and eliminate the pinholes in the layer. The experimental results demonstrated that the PSC's average open-circuit voltage (Voc) has been raised up from 0.823±0.105V to 0.940±0.008V by the spray-assisted process. It benefits from the low leakage possibility between the hole-transport-material (HTM) and the mesoporous TiO2 layer when a smooth and pinhole-free light absorption layer has successfully formed. Finally the average power conversion efficiencies of the mesostructure PSCs could be promoted by 25% approximately.

Abstract:The small optical bandgap of a CsSnI3‐based inorganic perovskite film makes it a hopeful candidate as an absorber layer in solar cell applications. Herein, a coadditive 2‐aminopyrazine (APZ) in the precursor solution to form SnF2−APZ complex with the aim to restrain Sn2+ oxidation and thus improve the CsSnI3‐based device performance is proposed. It is found that the amino group of APZ significantly suppresses oxidation of Sn2+ through a Lewis acid–base addition reaction. Consequently, the CsSnI3‐based mesoporous perovskite solar cells that use a printable c‐TiO2/m‐TiO2/Al2O3/NiO/carbon framework with high reproducibility achieve a power conversion efficiency of 5.12%. This is a champion efficiency for fully inorganic CsSnI3‐based mesoporous devices reported up to now. Furthermore, after 60 days of storage in a N2‐filled glovebox, the device still maintains an initial efficiency of 92%.
Interconnected SnO2 Nanocrystals Electron Transport Layer for Highly Efficient Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:This study reports on interconnected SnO2 electron transport layers (composed of presynthesized SnO2 nanocrystals interconnected by amorphous phase SnOx) processed at low temperature (120 °C) for highly efficient flexible perovskite solar cells. Herein, the amorphous phase SnOx serves as an effective binder to connect the SnO2 nanocrystals to obtain ultra‐smooth electron transport layers. Further characterization of the charge carrier kinetics at the perovskite/electron transport layer interface confirms that the interconnected SnO2 nanocrystals layer facilitates electron extraction and retards nonradiative charge carrier recombination. Consequently, a power conversion efficiency of 16.29% is achieved for flexible perovskite solar cells using the interconnected SnO2 electron transport layer on indium tin oxide/polyethylene terephthalate substrates.

Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) has been demonstrated as a promising electron transport material for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to its low temperature process and high charge extraction ability. However, the key to improving the internal performance of PSCs toward unity lies in the ability of enhancing bulk SnO2 quality and reducing the energy level mismatch between SnO2 and perovskite layer. Here, we report a facile and effective strategy to simultaneously functionalize SnO2 structure by sodium alginate (SA) polysaccharide compound. Our investigations reveal that SA leads to the formation of nano‐synapse structure of SnO2 films, which allows the aligned energy levels and suppressed charge recombination, significantly enhancing carrier extraction and transport. Consequently, CsMAFAPb(IxBr1‐x)3 and CsPbI2Br solar cells achieve a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.11% and 16.90%, respectively, based on SnO2‐SA ETLs. Abstract:We introduce the use of low temperature sputtered NiOx thin film, which substitutes the PEDOT-PSS and solution-processed NiOx as an effective electron blocking layer for mesoscopic NiO/CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite solar cells. The influences of film thickness and oxygen doping on the photovoltaic performances are scrutinized. The cell efficiency has been improved from 9.51 to 10.7% for devices using NiOx fabricated under pure argon atmosphere. With adequate doping under 10% oxygen flow ratio, we achieved power conversion efficiency of 11.6%. The procedure is large area scalable and has the advantage for cost-effective perovskite-based photovoltaics.

Abstract:SnO2 is considered as a promising electron transport material for carbon-based perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) due to its excellent electron mobility, stability over TiO2, and low-temperature processing. However, the lattice mismatch and poor contact quality of the SnO2/CH3NH3PbI3 interface, as well as oxygen vacancies, usually lead to nonradiative recombination and limit the further improvement of photovoltaic performance. In this paper, two chitosan derivatives, chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HACC) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), were used as additives for SnO2 to adjust the energy level and improve the contact performance of the SnO2/CH3NH3PbI3 interface. These two additives have suitable terminal active functional groups, amino group and hydroxyl group, which can interact with SnO2 and CH3NH3PbI3 at the interface, induce the crystal growth of the perovskite, and play a good role in passivating interfacial defects. Therefore, the interfacial contact and the charge-transfer ability were effectively enhanced. As a result, the addition of HACC and CMCS increased the PCE of C-PSCs from 10.17 to 12.42 and 13.39%, and the repeatability and long-term stability of the corresponding unencapsulated C-PSCs were also significantly improved. This work expands the vision for the future interface modification strategies to improve the device performance and is conducive to promote the further commercialization of C-PSCs.

Abstract:The dense, uniform and conformal electron transport layers (ETLs) will largely promote charge separation and extraction. Here, the mixed acid (hydrochloric acid and nitric acid) was used to regulate preparation process and enhance utilization of materials, and the colloids of tin oxide (SnO2) nanocrystals were prepared through hydrothermal process. The complete dissolution of Sn source can increase purity, produce homogeneous precursor, reduce grain sizes and improve film-coverage. As confirmed, a coherent interlayer at the SnO2 ETLs/perovskite interfaces will be achieved by coupling a Cl-bonded SnO2 film with a Cl-containing perovskite precursor. This thin coherent interlayer will largely reduce interface traps, enhance rapid carrier extraction, and impede charge recombination. The uniform polymer phase of (PEO)120-(PPO)30 will be used to passivate traps at the grain boundaries of perovskite films and further improve the photovoltaic performance. The maximum energy conversion efficiency (23.17%, a VOC of 1.153 V, a JSC of 24.75 mA cm−2 and a FF of 0.812) of perovskite solar cells was achieved. The charge separation, extraction, and recombination kinetics (charge dynamic process) was determined by the related characterization techniques. The functionalized SnO2-ETLs and formed coherent interlayer will provide a simple strategy to effectively decrease interface traps, enhance charge extraction, and facilitate development of perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:SnO 2 electron transport layers (ETLs) had an essential role in the n-i-p structure of perovskite solar cells. Improving the quality of the electron transport layer and enhancing interfacial contacts were key factors in the fabrication of high-performance perovskite solar cells. Therefore, a non-ionic polymeric polyacrylamide (PAM) modified SnO 2 colloidal solution with improved clustering of SnO 2 nanoparticles was presented to form a uniform and dense SnO 2 electron transport layer. The results demonstrated that no pinhole pores were found at the interface where the PAM-modified electron transport layer and the light absorbing layer came into contact, a structure that facilitated carrier transport and reduced carrier recombination at the interface location. Further beneficial effects were revealed by femtosecond Fs-TA measurements and trap of states (tDOS) analysis, where the carrier lifetime τ 2 decreased from 306.7 ps to 137.8 ps and the trap density of states of the film also decreased significantly. Correspondingly, the SnO 2 -PAM device exhibited an optimum efficiency of 21.61 %. Fantastic device stability was obtained due to the interaction of excellent contact at the SnO 2 /FAPbI 3 interface, and 85 % of the initial efficiency was maintained when placed in air for 1000 h for photo-aging tests, thereby improving the stability of FAPbI 3 grains. This method of improving the quality of tin oxide colloidal solutions provided a novel and simple way to prepare efficient perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Since being first published in 2018, the use of two-dimensional MXene in solar cells has attracted significant interest. This study presents, for the first time, the synthesis of an efficient hybrid electrocatalyst in the form of a nanocomposite (MXene/CoS)-SnO 2 designed to function as a high-performance electron transfer layer (ETL). The study can be divided into three distinct parts. The first part involves the synthesis of single-layer Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets, followed by the preparation of a CoS solution. Subsequently, in the second part, the fabrication of MXene/CoS heterostructure nanocomposites is carried out, and a comprehensive characterization is conducted to evaluate the physical, structural, and optical properties. In the third part, the attention is on the crucial characterizations of the novel nanocomposite-electron transport layer (ETL) solution, significantly contributing to the evolution of perovskite solar cells. Upon optimising the composition, an exceptional power conversion efficiency of more than 17.69% is attained from 13.81% of the control devices with fill factor (FF), short-circuit current density (J sc ), and open-circuit voltage (V oc ) were 66.51%, 20.74 mA/cm 2 , and 1.282 V. Therefore, this PCE is 21.93% higher than the control device. The groundbreaking MXene/CoS (2 mg mL −1 ) strategy reported in this research represents a promising and innovative avenue for the realization of highly efficient perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Applied Physics Letters, Volume 120, Issue 26, June 2022. SnO2 modified mesoporous ZrO2 is used to replace the mesoporous TiO2 layer and serves as a kind of mesoporous electron-transport layer during the low-temperature fabrication of mesoscopic perovskite solar cells that are based on carbon electrode. X-ray/ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy studies and electrical test observe that SnO2 modification brought down the work function while increasing the conductivity of the mesoporous ZrO2. Transient photovoltage/photocurrent decay curves, impedance spectroscopy, and photoluminescence mapping show that after the bottom layer of ZrO2 is modified by SnO2, the charge extraction process is accelerated while recombination is retarded. This modification helps to increase the power conversion efficiency from 4.70 (±0.85)% to 10.15 (±0.35)%, along with the optimized efficiency at 13.37% (AM1.5G, 100 mW/cm2) for the low-temperature devices. In addition, the effects of modification layers of SnO2 on the power conversion properties are carefully studied. This study shows that SnO2 modified mesoporous ZrO2 could serve as an efficient electron-transport layer for the low-temperature mesoscopic devices.

Polyelectrolyte-Doped SnO<sub>2</sub> as a Tunable Electron Transport Layer for High-Efficiency and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The charge transport layer is crucial to the performance and stability of the perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Compared with other conventional metal oxide electron transport materials, SnO2 has a deeper conduction band and higher electron mobility, and can efficiently serve as an electron transport layer to facilitate charge extraction and transfer. Herein, an optimized low-temperature solution-processed SnO2 electron transport layer is achieved by doping polyethylenimine polyelectrolyte into SnO2 for the first time in the PSCs. It is found that the performance of all aspects of the doped SnO2 film is improved over that of the pristine SnO2 film. The better energy level alignment, larger built-in field, enhanced electron transfer/extraction, and reduced charge recombination all contribute to the improved device performance. Finally, a PSC with a power conversion efficiency of 20.61% is successfully prepared under low temperature below 150 degrees C. Moreover, the stability of the doped SnO2-based device is also greatly improved.

Abstract:SnO2 has the advantages of excellent photostability and can be prepared at low-temperature below 200 ℃. It is regarded as one of the excellent materials for the electron transport layer, and widely used in efficient and stable planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells. In this work, the low-cost, dense and uniform SnO2 electron transport layer is prepared by spin coating at low temperature (150 ℃) for perovskite solar cells with a structure of FTO/SnO2/CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3)/Spiro-OMeTAD/Au. The crystallization and photoelectric properties of SnO2 electron transport layers prepared at different concentrations (2.5%–10%) at 150 ℃, and the influences of SnO2 electron transport layers on the formation of perovskite films and the performances of perovskite solar cells are discussed. By analyzing the scanning electron microscope (SEM), ultraviolet-visible light absorption spectrum (UV-Vis) and transmission spectrum of the SnO2 film, it is found that the coverage and light transmittance of the substrate and band gap of the SnO2 film increase as the SnO2 content increases, while the absorbance decreases. By analyzing the SEM, UV-Vis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and steady-state photoluminescence spectrum (PL) analysis of the SnO2/MAPbI3 thin film, it is found that the MAPbI3 deposited on the SnO2 layer with a concentration of 7.5% is uniform and pinhole-free, has the largest particle size and the best crystallinity, as well as more effective charge extraction capability and transport capability. By analyzing the electrochemical impedance (EIS) and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the device, the SnO2 electron transport layer with a concentration of 7.5% has better interface contact and lower interface resistance, which is beneficial to reducing the recombination of carriers and improving the photoelectric conversion capability, The perovskite solar cells based on SnO2 layer prepared with a concentration of 7.5% reaches a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 15.82% (Voc = 1.06 V, Jsc = 21.62 mA/cm2, FF = 69.40%), After storing for 600 h in ambient air ((25±5) ℃, RH>70%) without encapsulation, its efficiency remains 92% of the initial efficiency. At the same time, we prepare flexible devices on flexible substrates (TIO/PEN) by using SnO2 precursor with a concentration of 7.5%, which exhibits good photovoltaic performance and achieves a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 13.12%, and storage time for 84 d in ambient air ((30±5) ℃, RH>70%) without encapsulation, its efficiency remains 48% of the initial efficiency. The PCE retains 78% of the initial efficiency after 1000 bending cycles with a bending radius of 3 mm. The study of optimizing the concentration of SnO2 has laid a foundation for improving the performance of flexible perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:The perovskite crystals formed by methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) have garnered growing interest owing to their exceptional photovoltaic capabilities, economical production process, and ability to be processed in solution. A multitude of techniques have been devised to produce dense and uniform perovskite thin coatings, which are critical for the proper functioning of electronic devices. In order to promote the development of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 perovskite thin films that are uniform, dense, and exceptionally smooth, we present an additive-assisted method utilizing Copper zinc tin sulfide Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS) nanoparticles. The surface, optical, morphological, and structural properties were subsequently determined. The mechanisms by which the additive improves the quality of the material during the formation of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 perovskite films are elucidated in this study. These processes are postulated to characterize the crystallization of the films. Using this beneficial technique, a high-quality CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 film with a grain size significantly larger than 1.6 μm was effectively manufactured. Additionally, the doping process resulted in enhancements in both absorption and photoluminescence intensity. The addition of CZTS NPs elevated the crystal structures and morphologies of the CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 layer to a degree that was comparatively favorable. This was evidenced by the crystallite size of 83 nm and an optical bandgap (Eg) of 1.63 eV, both of which attest to the enhanced quality of the film. With the structure of glass/FTO/TiO 2 /CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 :CZTS NPs/spiro-oMeTAD/Au ,the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the best cell was 15.13% with a fill factor of 66.07%. The results of this study indicate that doping CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 solar cells with CZTS NPs is a dependable method for enhancing photovoltaic performance and promoting crystal growth.

Abstract:The material and microstructure of the carrier-selective layers in the perovskite solar cells are important to determining their efficiency and stability. Planar SnO2 is the most commonly used inorganic electron transport layer, but there are few reports of its mesoporous structure because of the degradation of hole-blocking property after high temperature sintering. Here, the chemical bath deposition method was optimized to realize low-temperature in-situ deposition of mesoporous SnO2 layer on FTO substrates. On one hand, the increased interface contact area improves electron injection from the perovskite layer to the SnO2, yielding an impressive increase of the power conversion efficiency from 22.09% to 24.11%. And on the other hand, thanks to the increased mechanical strength of the interface, the device with mesoporous SnO2 retains 90% of its initial power conversion efficiency after 1000 h operation under continuous one-sun illumination.

Abstract:We optimize the deposition of CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite into mesoporous electrodes consisting of anodic TiO2 nanotube layers. By a simple spin coating approach, complete filling of the tube scaffolds is obtained, that leads to interdigitated perovskite structures in conformal contact with the TiO2 tube counterparts. Such assemblies can be used as solid state solar cells in hole-transporting material-free configuration, i.e., the tube scaffold serves as electron collector and blocking layer, while the perovskite acts as visible light absorber and hole transporting material. We show that the complete filling of the tube scaffold with the perovskite is essential to improve the solar cell efficiency.
