Abstract:The transformation of a synthetic bayerite to boehmite was studied under different hydrothermal conditions for the first time. It was found that the hydrothermal transformation behavior depended strongly on agitation, atmosphere, and pressure. Static hydrothermal treatment resulted in incomplete phase transformation; a product with a mass ratio of similar to 1:1 of bayerite to fibrillous boehmite was obtained. Agitation favored a rapid and thorough transformation of bayerite to boehmite. Hydrothermal treatment in air led to monodispersed rhombic boehmite crystals, while H-2 caused the agglomeration of boehmite. The kind of atmosphere also influenced the aspect ratio of the boehmite crystals. More interestingly, at 4 MPa in either atmosphere, narrowly distributed mesopores with a diameter of ca. 3 nm were created within the boehmite crystals. These results demonstrate that by adjusting the hydrothermal conditions of bayerite, the control of phase composition, size, morphology, and porosity of boehmite can be achieved.
